EDITOR’S

LETTER

ere we are, celebrating the first birthday of what was once just a far fetched thought. It seems like just yesterday, I sat before this same computer screen, staring at this same blank page, structuring fragmented ideas to eventually form the first Editor’s Letter for what is now Bode Magazine. Before launching the first issue one year ago, we as a team knew we wanted to continue to innovate ourselves, our ideas, and our passions; and the magazine was the natural next step. Through each released issue, we reinvented all we had known while at the same time maintaining the essence of the vision that sparked this journey. Born to be a new beginning, words cannot quite capture the joys of watching this platform reinvent itself further curating conversation for a global audience through fresh thinking and bold ideas. One year later, the promise is still the same — to commit to visual genius through an optimistic editorial eye, while investing in true story telling through lasting, collaborative relationships.

The Anniversary Issue, as we are calling it, is a milestone that I had once only dreamed about as a young girl just starting to unveil the path that would ultimately lead to this moment. A distant possibility has now become something tangible, flourishing into the platform it is today. We are so fortunate to be in a space where rules and proverbial boxes are not really there so we have the beautiful opportunity to make of this what we please. But without the people who have stood by the vision that has become Bode, we would not exist nor continue to transform. ALesphotographer, Fleurs, page 104 and now close friend, with an undeniable talent and ability to capture the essence of his subjects; a visual genius with the ability to take the fragmented pieces and bring them to life; a motivated and dedicated spokesperson enlisting support through content; and a growing army of family and contributors responsible for the art and success of each issue — all unafraid to reinvent themselves and to follow their ambition. Let the talent and the inspiring stories told in not only this issue, but in all of our issues, inspire you to make your life what you please.

AN INSTANT CLASSIC

Brooke Testoni with

Brooke Testoni is the founder and lead designer behind Australian luxury accessory brand —Rylan. Testoni masterfully creates classic, minimal pieces that are designed to withstand the test of time and trends. Even more, her deliciously striking, European leather goods are built to be passed from this generation to the next. With Testoni, precious gems and gold antiques are no longer the only family heirlooms worth keeping in your possession. By Jessica Gandy

B

rooke Testoni, a native of Queensland, moved to Sydney nearly a decade ago to pursue a career in fashion. “Growing up, I always loved fashion, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that I was ‘fashionable’,” laughs Testoni, “but I was always so fond of [the industry].” After studying graphic design in school, the entrepreneur decided to follow the yellow brick, albeit quite sandy, road to The Emerald City. Over the years Testoni has worked for an Australian, luxury fashion designer and for an international denim brand, both aiding in the further honing of her skills in design, marketing, graphics, and e-commerce. After meeting other creatives and exposing herself to new experiences, Testoni grew enough confidence to strike it out on her own. That was the birth of Rylan.

“I’ve always loved Rylan as a name to call my son,” begins the founder and designer. “I started Rylan before I had my son, so I guess you could say the brand was my first baby,” smiles Testoni. “Rylan is a classic, effortless, and androgynous brand, so the name suits it well.” When the style savvy creator decided to venture out on her own, Testoni was reacting to a noticeable gap in the contemporary handbag market. Frustrated by an industry that only offered traditional luxury or fast fashion brands, she knew there was space for a different type of accessory and a different type of brand. The visionary had just the solution to fill that void. “I have always been drawn to accessories,” begins Testoni. “I like to purchase bags and shoes over clothes, which is why I started a luxury accessories brand. I found it hard to find a bag that had a classic shape without really obvious branding or heavily embellished hardware. I wanted something simpler that wouldn’t date like many modern bags and would hopefully become a classic that would be relevant now and in 50-year’s time.” Rylan accessories are for the individual who has an appreciation for fashion, but has no desire to drip in labels. Testoni specializes in contemporary pieces with clean lines, neutral tones, and artisan craftsmanship. The vibe is midcentury, but classic, allowing them to be in style now and for years to come. Drawing inspiration from a time gone by through old photos, books, fashion campaigns, architecture, furniture design, and international travel, Testoni loves motifs that incorporate vintage elements. This approach to design happens to be her opted aesthetic, for both personal styling and interior design, so it is natural that those elements also blend into her brand. “Our bags are inspired by the past, but hand finished for the women of today,” shares Testoni. The Rylan woman is ageless and chooses to invest in classics. “A woman carries a handbag every day,” continues the designer, “so I believe we should invest in a quality bag that lasts. I liked the challenge of designing a bag and balancing the aesthetic form and function. I also liked the challenge of designing a bag that could be classic, versatile, and work

with a variety of looks or for different occasions.” Testoni designs for women like her. Women who are not slaves to trends; supremely confident, but not overpowering; and most importantly has a penchant for style. Currently, the designer has been sporting the black with ivory stitch baguette bag for everyday wear. “It is such a beautiful classic that fits all of your necessities. It is also a bag that can be dressed up or down. I wear it with jeans and sneakers, or with a dress and heels,” imparted Testoni. Her style is her own, recognizing that it may not be for all, but that is kind of the point. Although Testoni has always been drawn to accessories like handbags and shoes, with her experience in apparel it makes sense that Rylan has an interest in moving in that direction. Next for the up and coming brand is an expansion. Rylan already offers jewelry, but Testoni has plans to once again dabble in the apparel market. “I think it is important to have a clear vision of what you are trying to achieve with a new category and fill a need,” begins the founder, “even if it’s just what I’m looking for and can’t find.” Much like her accessories line, Testoni is going to pull inspiration from her everyday life. With her personal style being very edited — think black blazers, denim jeans, and classic boots — her next collection is likely to mimic her curated aesthetic. However, for now, Testoni plans to focus on further developing her brand and spending quality time with her husband and son. 17

ALAN BERSTEN

Dancing with a smile Alan Bersten, a modern day dancing phenom, is the reigning mirror ball champion on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (DWTS). The titles — professional dancer and choreographer — only begin to describe Bersten, whose command of the dance floor mirrors his influence and charm on social media. Boasting over half a million followers, Bersten’s contagious smile, swift dance moves, and jovial jesters help him accomplish his ultimate mission: “to go out and make people happy.”

“Passionate, hard-working, and loyal,” are the three qualities Alan Bersten attributes to himself and to his success as a modern day dancer. Growing up in Minnetonka, a small town in Minnesota, Bersten “had no idea dancing on TV was even a possibility” for him. “I started dancing at the age of seven and never really questioned it,” began the dancer. “My parents made me start and I truly owe them my whole life for that strange decision to put their kids into ballroom dancing.” Competing in the ballroom circuit for most of his childhood and formative years, at nineteen, the showman auditioned for So You Think You Can Dance. “Somehow I was chosen to be on season 10 and made the Top 20,” Bersten shared with disbelief. “My life instantly changed!” An unapologetic passion and undeterred perseverance allowed the flourishing star to follow his dreams. “I knew that I only felt comfortable on stage dancing and performing for people,” the dancer heartens. “It has led me to where I am now!” And where he is now is tearing up the dance floor on DWTS with his latest celebrity dance partner, actress Skai Jackson (#teamreachfortheskai). Even amidst the pandemic, DWTS has taken necessary precautions to ensure the continuation of the show and the safety of everyone involved.

authentic as possible on social media, so I don’t really feel much different. I think it is super important to unwind and find a way to just turn off when I get home, whether it is reading a book or just listening to music.” Even after amassing the following he has, Bersten still does not see himself as a public figure quite yet. “I still can’t believe there are people out there that are interested in what I do,” the choreographer contemplates with humbling gratitude. “That being said, I think it is so important for people to be authentic, for people to be good, and care for one another. It’s not difficult to be a good person,” Bersten offers. “One smile can change someone’s entire day, so I try to go out and make people happy.” Bersten’s bid for authenticity comes with being fearless and pushing boundaries — two traits of the newest generation of young entertainers entering the scene. “I think it is incredible to watch the boundaries getting pushed,” Bersten applauded. “You can’t really put an entertainer into one category because most entertainers sing, dance, act… They really can do it all! I think it is such a beautiful thing. I’m jealous,” Bersten jokes. “Trust me, you don’t want to hear my singing voice!” Although we may never hear Bersten sing along to his performances on DWTS, we can certainly watch in awe as he masterfully maneuvers across the floor and fulfills his life’s passion. “I am the luckiest person in the world because I get to go on stage and dance, which has always been my dream,” Bersten affirmed. “I also get to make people smile, which I feel is my purpose in life.”

“Life has been crazy this past year with COVID-19, but I am so grateful that we are able to be back in the ballroom for the new season,” Bersten rejoices. With the show back up and running, the choreographer works tirelessly to protect his mirror ball champion title. “During the season, my day-to-day life consists of waking up, getting some coffee, and then I start choreographing my dance for the upcoming week,” Bersten relays. “From there, I teach my partner the choreographed dance. It is pretty remarkable that I get to do my dream job every single day,” beams the dancer with his reputable, infectious smile; “How lucky am I?”

The dancer’s gleaming grin can be seen both on the dance floor and on his Instagram page. Centered around wellness, health, authenticity, and “making as many people smile as you can,” Bersten’s social page highlights the importance of taking care of ourselves and our bodies. “We can’t take [our bodies] for granted,” Bersten implored. “It is so important to work out, get active, and fuel your body appropriately. Luckily, I grew up active and dancing, but many people don’t have that luxury.” For Bersten, dance is the best form of exercise for both strength and cardio — in fact, he can’t live without it. “I feel like my body is programmed to move and the second I slow down or stop, my body kind of shuts down. So, I make sure to always keep moving.”

Luck, however, is only part of the equation for Bersten’s success. There is incredible talent on the dance floor and incredible authenticity on social media. Offering no magic dance step to balance his life on social media with his life off-screen, Bersten reveals, “I try to be as

Move he has, as this entertainer has always prioritized moving forward, both physically and professionally. Growing up in a Jewish and Russian household, Bersten was raised with the mindset that work and passion are everything.

23

“If I do something, I have to do it at 150%, there is no other way for me.”

I

am going to go ahead and say that my personality is difficult to get along with,” Bersten laughed. Operating at 150% can be exhausting, but Bersten finds continuous motivation in his family. “My parents have given up so much for me to be where I am today, along with my siblings,” praises the dancer. “When I accomplish something, my family is the first to call me and tell me how proud of me they are. I do everything for them. I want my parents to go to work and brag about me. I feel like that is the ultimate goal for someone, to brag about their kids. I just try to impress my family!” With Bersten’s family thoroughly impressed with all of his cha-cha-championships and salsa-successes, his confidence in his career blends over into his confidence with his style. “I feel like dancers have their own sense of style and, honestly, my style sense is whatever I am feeling. If you can wear something with confidence, no one will question it,” Bersten assures. “I think I get a lot of my confidence from dancing, so it really helps me feel comfortable wearing anything.” When traveling through Shibuya, Tokyo for a month, the dancer fell in love with the fashion-forward destination. “I remember I brought back a ton of clothing and was embarrassed to wear it because it was so futuristic — way ahead of its time! Now, nine years later, it’s finally cool.”

24

Now residing in Los Angeles, another fashion mecca under his cultured belt, Bersten’s focus on fashion lies within the feeling over the fabric. “It is important to look good, but more importantly to feel good. I am not obsessed with clothing for the style as much as I am with the feeling I get when I wear it,” Bersten elucidates. “To me, the sentimentality energy around clothing is the most important thing. I have a simple, beige shirt from All-Saints that I love and wear a lot!” Though we may not see that beige shirt grace the DWTS stage, we can certainly see Alan Bersten and Skai Jackson giving it their all this season. “We really want to stay in the competition and win for you guys,” Bersten exclaims before heading back to the stage he loves. So, as a final “shameless plug” from Bersten: “vote for #teamreachfortheskai every Monday night on ABC at 8/7 central.”

ith humble roots planted in a small town somewhere in Dixieland, Fallon has paid her dues and paved her way through the fast-paced city of Los Angeles, where she is currently based, to become one of the city’s preeminent influencers and wardrobe stylists. “I’m still figuring myself out, every day, through lessons, experience, and relationships with people and life,” shares Fallon. Four years ago, she was living a completely different life as an elementary school teacher. While her head was with her students, her heart yearned for something different, something more. So like a scene from a movie — maybe Burlesque starring Christina Aguilera — Fallon found the courage to pack up her bags, drop everything, and move across the country to follow her passions. “I started with modeling,” reminisces Fallon, “I would style all of my own looks for my photoshoots and photographers were always awe-struck by my outfits. Then one day it hit me — my favorite part of modeling wasn’t posing for the camera, but creating new and interesting outfits.” Not long after, founder and CEO was added to Fallon’s already impressive repertoire.

through their presentation. Fallon’s mission is to make mothers feel gorgeous in their own skin. “You created life. Own it!” beams the founder. “As mothers, we need to be less hard on ourselves and appreciate the life we created! Be proud of the stripes you earned.” Fallon’s own personal inspiration comes from the queen of inner beauty and edge – Robyn Rihanna Fenty herself. “I love how bold her style is,” gushes Fallon, “from the bright colors she wears to the edgy pieces on red carpets — she owns it and isn’t afraid to push the envelope. To me, that’s inspirational.” The stylist hopes that through Lex Lux she encourages her clients to be just as courageous and to really challenge the status quo. On her many travels, Fallon found that the people of Tokyo truly embody her aesthetic. “Tokyo was by far the most fashion forward destination I have visited so far,” reminisces Fallon. “I loved the Harajuku style, fun colored hair styles, and how the people of Tokyo were unapologetically themselves.” For Fallon, she is most unapologetic for simply being herself and living a life that fulfills her soul. As she has grown, not only as a stylist, but as a mother and a woman, she has learned to care less about what others think of her and to rather fixate on aspects of life that bring peace, joy, and light.“I will never apologize for doing what feels right for me, my family, or my life,” states the style savvy business owner.

“I will never apologize for doing what feels right for me, my family, or my life.”

Fallon’s business, Lex Lux Style Hause, has been a longstanding goal of hers. Witnessing firsthand how her like-minded boss babe clients had difficulty finding the time to achieve their goals while also looking the part, Lex Lux was born of the idea that you can in fact have it all — if you enlist help from the best. For Fallon, the best way to capture each client’s je ne sais quoi is to truly understand their unique personalities. Capturing the essence of her clients is of paramount importance to the budding maven because that is the foundation needed to create an outfit that leaves her clients feeling sexy, secure, and most importantly confident. “Once COVID-19 had all of us in quarantine, I jumped on taking advantage of really honing in on my business — all while being pregnant and hormonal,” laughed Fallon.

Now, Fallon wears many hats — stylist, business owner, mother — all while still helping others find their perfect matches too. Her brand is no longer the only baby that she is raising nowadays. Three short months ago, Fallon gave birth to the light of her life, son River. Albeit difficult, Fallon has managed to flow with her new life rather than against it. “If I could take him to every fashion event with me, I would. When you have a child, it’s a bond like no other. The biggest thing I have found is that you have to have balance,” shares Fallon. River has also given her a new perspective on her business. Now a major component of Lex Lux is empowering mothers by helping them find their inner confidence

Fallon’s personal taste is simply defined as edgy femme, but achieving Fallon’s particular palette look is a bit more complex. Her most coveted styles of the moment include boyfriend jeans, slouchy boots, and funky textures like feathers, latex, and satin. Pulling from the best of the early 2000s, it is wearable Lady Marmalade. “I always follow my gut and what feels right in the moment despite other opinions,” reveals the stylist. However, none of this is a steadfast rule. Fallon strongly believes that stagnation is the death of business and fashion. The ability to evolve spurs growth and that is what enables her success. For example, Fallon’s personal style dramatically transformed when she arrived in California. “California has definitely influenced my style in that now I love relaxed streetwear more than I ever did before moving here. Give me an oversized Rhude tee, sweats, and Jordans and I’m comfy yet stylish! That’s Cali-comfy chic!” With one Jordan on the gas pedal and her eye on the prize, Fallon is ready to take on bigger and better opportunities to create the life she and River deserve. Next for Lex Lux may be its own clothing line — one that is sure to pack a punch with vibrant colors and fitted silhouettes. “It’s all a process and a journey,” shares Fallon, “but persistence guarantees that results are inevitable.” 45

It is time to press pause. Whether you’re looking to catch up with America’s Next Top Model title holder or Monrowe’s founder and designer, Dani Evans has already decided that there is more to life than fame, the next fashion drop, or glitzy parties. Her main ambition — aside from owning her truth and her humble progression to self-love — is to continue following her purpose: “to be a lighthouse in a dark industry; but the way in which the mission is unfolding is just now beginning.” By Heather Marie Combs

H

er career got off to a flying start in 2006 when Little Rock’s fiercest face, Dani Evans, took the title of America’s Next Top Model. One year ago, we had the pleasure of keeping it real with the now New York super model and designer of custom brim line, Monrowe, to discuss her humble beginnings, why fashion is overrated and her obsession with a dope brim. While a lot has changed for Evans, as we sit down one year later, her authenticity and her truth is still very much at the fore, and of course so is a dope brim. More than just a beautiful face with the perfect pout and coveted cheek bones, Evans is an entrepreneur with big energy and an even more powerful manifestor. Since we last spoke, the model is candid with us, saying, “I’m most unapologetic for putting me first and staying true to my boundaries and core values.”

Curious as to how the unanticipated year affected her inspiration and creativity, we had to check on Monrowe, a beautiful, reminiscent take on the jazz era through custom built, timeless brims. “Monrowe has seriously taken shape in a more expansive way since the quarantine,” beams Evans. “We are now being sold in several stores within the next couple of months. We’re working on doing a collaboration with another big brand which I can’t go into details about right now, but it’s going to be exciting.” While Monrowe continues to flourish emerging and acclimating to the obstacles of this year, quarantine was not all success stories for Evans. “I felt quite emptied out from inspiration for several months during quarantine,” begins the model. “It felt like apathy for a while which wasn’t a fun experience; however, I allowed myself to feel all the feels without putting too much judgement into it. My inspiration and creativity comes in waves. It’s not a constant flow. So I allowed myself to rest in the previous process, realizing that the creativity hadn’t abandoned me. Once the shop in BK opened in June, I went so I could be around the hat making process again. Even though we weren’t running at full capacity, it was beneficial for me to be around the hat blocks and start reigniting that creativity again.”

“I’m most unapologetic for putting myself first and staying true to my boundaries and core values.”

Like many of us in the process of emerging from the mandated solitude of the 2020 pandemic, Evans fully immersed herself in the power and journey of self-love. “I was not concerned about staying busy during the onset of the pandemic,” begins the model, “I truly allowed myself to just be. To go inward and work on myself. To realign and define what those core desires and needs are that I want for myself. I look at this time in life as a serious defining moment for us all individually and collectively. Busy wasn’t a part of my intention whatsoever, other than being busy about the spiritual internal work within myself.” Utilizing the newfound free time, Evans forged a daily routine that aligned herself with the positive energy she craved. “My days consisted of waking up and working out. Having my quiet time — meditation, reading, Lacy Phillips workshops, connecting with my nephews on FaceTime — then cooking myself dinner. My quarantine was a beautiful transition with ebbs of uncertainty, but for the most part it was extremely rewarding, even in the painful moments,” reminisced the public figure.

At this time, the designer chooses to stay true to the label’s core as a brim line, but Evans believes whole heartedly that Monrowe is destined for expansion at the right time down the line. “I move based on feelings. Not emotionally charged feelings, but sacral feels,” reveals the founder. “I’ll know exactly when it’s time to expand and into what. I allow my intuition to speak to me in that way. I have several ideas that are ready when I am to create them. What I can tell you is that it will for sure be just as lux as our brims.” We would expect nothing less from this top model, as since we met one year ago, her process remains tried and true, to listen to her inner self and trust in her intuition.

59

Crystal Bodysuit: Cheng-Huai Vest: Fatale Maison Earrings: Kathia Lynne Shoes: Valentino 60

E

xperiencing the same stress and anxiety as all of us, Evans chooses to listen to the stress of not only this year and allow it to take her back to the root of why she feels the way she feels. “Most times the feelings derive from a previous trigger that needs your attention and care to be properly healed,” heartens Evans. “It sucks, I’m not going to sugar coat the ‘work’ and make it seem like it’s sunflowers and butterflies in a beautiful field that smells like summer rain. It’s confronting and challenging, but there’s also this sense of being guided and protected once you begin to uncover a lot of underlying things that led to the stress and anxiety.” To simply answer our question of how she combats anxiety and the pressures of the industry, “yoga works too,” she adds with a laugh and a flash of her famous smile.

S

tyle may evolve over the years, but for Dani Evans she remains loyal to her personal apparel tastes, still coveting oversized pieces, silks, jumpers, her classic levi’s, and we can safely assume a dope pair of black boots and a daring brim. If you were to see her on the chilly streets of New York, you will see her owning the pavement in Prada combat boots, an oversized Isabel Marant flannel jacket, and tons of La Mer crème de la mer — the secret to maintaining her skin’s healthy natural glow even in these colder months. As our catch up conversation with the genuine soul that is Dani Evans comes to a close, the entrepreneur, model and industry revolutionist intends to continue her path as a lighthouse in a dark industry. Also gearing up to drop Monrowe’s Release III collection, the designer is excited to release a collection that was a long time in the making. “This new release is special in that most of the brims I created a while ago, but didn’t feel connected to release it during the time of creation. I do that often — I’ll create, but know it’s for a later time,” reveals Evans. “I have to sit with the crowns and see how I feel about them a week later, a month later, before feeling connected in a way to release them. I never create to keep up or impress. I create to satisfy myself. I think that notion has helped keep me from panicking in feeling like I need to release brims every season. I don’t follow seasons or fashion calendars. No one is going to tell me when I need to create and release.”

Self-made female influencer, business owner, and designer — Stella Simona — has rocked the fashion world with her unique and personable jewelry and art. Her unwavering attention to detail and uniqueness, paired with her focus on what can amplify the power and individuality of each woman who wears her designs, has put Simona in a position to lead the beauty and fashion industries in a short amount of time. tella Simona is a modern day creative and entrepreneur headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Mother to two sweet boys, Noah and Kohl, this working mom is all about art, beauty, and passion. For this jewelry designer and content creator, self-expression is the most important aspect of her professional livelihood. “My self-discovery journey has always been intertwined with my love for fashion, beauty, and art. My message [to my audience] is self-care — take care of yourself, follow your intuition and life will feel full,” heartens Simona. Her introduction to jewelry was a part of her early road to self-discovery as a young child. “I believe what we end up pursuing as adults is based on something that we became exposed to at a young age,” states the artist, “whether we realize it or not.” As a first-generation Bangladeshi-American, Simona remembers with reverence and love the way that her grandmother used to travel to Bangladesh, returning with gifts of precious stones and jewelry. “One year, she asked me to sketch out what I wanted, and that summer when she returned from her travels she had brought my sketches to life,” shares the now designer with a grateful grin. “At the time, I didn’t think to myself that I would be a designer one day, but without realizing it that seed had been planted.”

and “tea” — two great joys reflecting Simona’s culture), on the other hand, is Amarlio’s compliment label, designed to offer heirloom jewelry designed in 14k and 18k gold. “There is a strong narrative that pays homage to my native roots, as well as a lot of storytelling in the design referencing old world design elements,” shares Simona. “The customer who invests in Haati Chai is familiar with gold, and has a more authentic style. She tends to seek out pieces that are one of a kind.” The two jewelry lines are like true sisters in that they do resemble each other, but each exude their own identities. “The beautiful thing is we see a lot of crossover,” beams the designer, “and once our Amarilo woman begins to mature her taste in jewelry, she begins to invest in a lot of the premium designs at Haati Chai as well.” This business design is perhaps one of the key aspects lending to the brands collaborative success. Of course, Simona’s personal style comes into play as well, seeing as her tastes and world travels inspire all aspects of her designs. “I’ve always treated accessories as the more bold detail of any ensemble. I like to wear well-tailored, muted silhouettes that contrast well with accessories,” shares the tastemaker. It seems that, for Simona, the clothes are worn to bring out the best in the accessories, rather than the other way around. “I’m all about comfort and luxury,” she adds; “fine jewelry that can be worn every day and layered up or simplified down to really speak to a busy woman’s lifestyle. All our designs are created with this in mind.”

“My self-discovery journey has always been intertwined with my love for fashion, beauty, and art.”

That simply placed seed would later sprout into not just one, but two successful ventures for Simona. Just shy of ten years ago, the designer co-launched her own sister labels – Amarilo Jewlery and Haati Chai Jewlery – captivating beholders with their unique designs and simplistic beauty. “We have a unique story,” reminisces Simona. “My cofounder Ali originally founded Amarilo and I had founded Haati Chai in 2011. We met a few years in, and then eventually made a strategic decision to join both companies. For both of us, jewelry has always played a key part in our identities. Jewelry was our first loves, and without jewelry all these years we would be lost. It brought us freedom, a way to practice self-expression, and a way to claim our identities as women. For both brands, our mission is to offer women pieces that can do the same for them, too.” The say two is better than one, and Simona was happy to tell us why. “In a nutshell, Amarilo (nuancing the Spanish word for ‘yellow’) offers classic pieces that you may have seen your grandmother or aunt wearing growing up. The pieces are minimal and focused on comfort and practicality. They are designed in 10k and 14k gold, and at an attainable price. This is our introductory fine brand. There are educational components involved. The customer most likely doesn’t know too much about fine jewelry, she’s trend focused, and is someone who is learning how solid gold can improve their lifestyle.” Haati Chai (meaning “elephant”

Another theme that Stella touches so nicely on in her branding is diversity, and embracing cultures for the beauty and authenticity that they have to offer. “The amazing thing about our collections is that they are timeless,” exclaims the designer, “and for Amarilo, we just launched our collaboration with Honey & Silk, which is one piece — ‘Universe’ in Chinese.” The collaboration centers on the ongoing theme of identity, giving a voice to anyone who appreciates Chinese culture and the Chinese diaspora. This focus on culture, beauty, and uniqueness is what draws so many people to Simona’s jewelry lines and the designer does her best to ensure that the quality and standard of each piece brings justice to the story behind it. “Fast fashion is draining, so why put your energy into shopping for a whole new wardrobe over and over,” questions Simona. “Instead, treat your style like an art form and slowly invest in quality pieces over time that you see yourself using for a long period of time, if not a lifetime.” This method of wardrobe building and overall daily styling offers much more peace in the act of dressing, for “ dressing up becomes a relaxing process when you simplify all the steps.” 71

W

ith her statement pieces displayed on a global scale, we were eager to uncover Simona’s findings on fashion around the world. The designer has taken note that American culture tends to be all about “wanting what everyone else has,” whereas elsewhere individuality is very important and people want to invest in something unique and of good quality. A longtime advocate for the statements of accessories, the designer further revealed her jewelry box staples being, “honestly, a little bit of everything. Hoop earrings, bracelets, necklaces to layer, and at least one staple piece that looks nothing like what anyone else owns, but really reflects your personality.” That one piece for her: “The Amarilo ‘Jules Anklet’. Anklets are everything,” expresses the designer, “and this piece I cannot get enough of. I never take it off.” At the end of the day, Simona’s ultimate goal is to bring her passion for jewelry and accessorizing to the masses, in a unique and powerful way that emboldens each woman who invests in her wearable art. In addition to launching more co-branded collections, Simona is also planning to expand Haati Chai into the world of Home and Lifestyle.

She is an actress and beauty queen, yes — but Kiara Liz Ortega is making her mark in countless other ways, too. Former Miss Puerto Rico, Top 5 Miss Universe ’18, and Univision TV host, to name a few titles, Ortega is making waves in the industry as a modern day influencer, role model and advocate for authenticity and diversity.

he young star has awed audiences globally by acquiring her title of Miss Universe Puerto Rico in 2018 and is taking on the world to show viewers and followers that there is beauty in diversity and being true to yourself. Her most recent accolades as an actress, specifically her role in hosting the television show Quien es la Mascara, have further earned the beauty queen notoriety and recognition. When asked about the day-to-day life of a beauty queen and actress, Ortega keeps it real with us and is candid about the duties of the crown. “To be in my shoes when I won [Miss Puerto Rico] was a very life changing experience,” begins

Ortega, “and my day usually started at 6am and ended after 10pm.” The artist continues saying she was usually booked solid from noon to night with interviews, charity work, fittings, TV appearances, in-store events, and many more jobs. Her social media accounts alone have an abundant following, with her Instagram climbing up and over 150,000 online followers. “As an influencer, I would say my best advice to my audience is to always love yourself and to be the best version of yourself all the time,” encourages Ortega. “I think it is very important to understand that we come in all shapes and sizes and to not compare yourself to others, but instead, to love your individuality.”

his emphasis on inner beauty and focus is what makes Ortega such a positive role model on stage and off. She says that it is incredibly important to be healthy mentally, physically, and emotionally, no matter who you are, and that she has a blessed support system in place in the form of family and friends. “I think something I’ve noticed is that women in pageants are truer to themselves these days,” analyzes Ortega, “and they’re trying to showcase what we all go through and create awareness about different issues that we all face, rather than making it look like it’s all perfect in the industry.” This, of course, is the role model’s goal in life — to lead with an inner beauty and message that brings out the best in every individual looking up to her. Now, when it comes to fashion, of course a beauty pageant stunner and actress like Ortega has a few tricks up her sleeve. “My inspiration comes from my mood,” shares the influencer, “and it’s funny because sometimes people say that I should dress a certain way just because I’m a past title holder.” Of course, she doesn’t. Rather, Ortega prefers not to take herself too seriously and proudly dresses in whatever suits her fancy that day. “ I always try to play with colors, fabrics, and patterns,” reveals the tastemaker. Her closet staples consist of a regular, oversized white T-shirt, distressed denim, and a beautiful white maxi dress from Saks 5th Ave in Mexico. “I’m dying to have an event where I can wear it,” beams Ortega; “but my non-negotiable accessory at the moment is a mask. I have them in all shapes and colors,” she adds.

“I think it is very important to understand that we come in all shapes and sizes and to not compare yourself to others, but instead, to love your individuality.” Curious about her time on stage, we inquired on a humble title holders tips and tricks to feeling your most confident and beautiful. “There are many pageant tricks I learned on my way to Miss Universe,” Ortega begins, “but one I always suggest is to practice in front of a mirror and to record everything.” She says that when you see yourself on video you can identify areas of opportunity and enhance your projection and demeanor. “A good pair of heels makes me feel very confident, too,” she finishes with a smile and an arch of her beautifully manicured brow. With makeup also at the forefront of her less conventional career path, Ortega opts for a bold eye most days and cannot live without her favorite mascara. “I think that on days where I don’t want to do a full make up, having mascara makes it for me.” 81

A

s a cultural and well-versed world traveler, in addition to her roots in vibrant Puerto Rico, Ortega has a lot to offer in the way of world views. With the opportunity to immerse herself in the individual cultures of her multi-homes and travels, she believes women in the States can learn from beauty and fashion in Puerto Rico, saying the answer is simple: that less is more. “Also, that colors and patterns shouldn’t just be for a specific season,” continues Ortega. “I even try to mix everything up; that’s how I make my signature looks.” No novice to global exploration, this veteran was especially touched by the city of Paris. “Everything in the city was so classy and elevated. You could sit in the streets and spend most of the day watching people walk up and down the streets. Parisians have a really good sense of style,” admires the beauty queen. Unapologetic for being true to herself and making decisions on the merit of inner positive feelings, she values the opportunity through travel to respect each culture and appreciate the beauty that comes from diversity.

82

As our conversation came to a close, we had to ask: The saying goes, “heavy weighs the head that wears the crown.” Is the crown really as heavy as we may think it is? With a beautiful laugh and infectious smile, she revealed, “at least mine was very heavy. I was glad to only wear it during specific events and photoshoots. But jokes aside,” she continues, “being a beauty queen and representing your country in an event like Miss Universe comes with a lot of social responsibilities. There are many young girls and boys that see you as their role model, and once you’re crowned you become a representative of the men and women of your country. So, the eyes of the world are on you and you have to act and behave accordingly.” In the years past her time in the pageant scene, Ortega is eager to continue her journey in acting and in fashion. Unable to say too much about certain projects, you can be sure this kind hearted advocate will also be continuing with her philanthropy, as these missions stem far past her duties as a beauty queen and rather hold a dear place close to Ortega’s heart.

Angela Rose, of Angela Rose Home Decor, does it all when it comes to home styling. She visualizes, designs, and literally builds everything to create the perfect abode for her and her family. Now the DIY queen is focused on sharing with others exactly how she does it. By Jessica Gandy

A simple scroll through Angela Rose’s expertly curated Instagram feed or website, it is hard to not be envious. Her home looks like it was plucked right out of an architectural dream editorial. From her green room accent wall to the world’s most chic bunk beds it is easy to believe that she enlisted the expertise of a seasoned interior design firm and custom home renovation expert - and simply settled their hefty, well deserved tickets. However, Rose’s picture-perfect, covet-worthy home was completely customized by no one other than her. From inspiration to execution, Rose is making her dream home a reality and she devotes the remainder of her time to teaching others how to do the same. Like many of us, her

dream home was once a bunch of pins floating around her inspiration boards, but now it is her reality. “The desire for designer looks started with me making my own furniture and now that I have a home, it has translated to the entire home design process,” shared Rose. The self proclaimed fearless DIYer and Doer has successfully self taught herself the techniques and tools she needed to create the pieces she wanted, for a fraction of the price. “I have always loved beautiful things,” began Rose, “but I didn’t have the budget for them. Fifteen years ago, I decided I was tired of my college furniture and wanted nicer things. So I decided to build my own.” After creating her first headboard she was hooked for life.

onstructing her visions with her own hands is empowering for the designer. Taking it a step further, as I am sure we all are grateful, she believes that it is also her job to empower others to actualize their dream homes in order to achieve the same feelings. Encouraging people to stop pinning and start doing, the interior architect sees no need to wait for the perfect job, income, or house before creating the life, and home, you have envisioned. “I got tired of hearing the same complaints from my friends over and over about waiting for their perfect home. I wanted to show people that they could make their current homes their dream homes too with a little bit of work and creativity,” heartened Rose.

Beginning her journey the same way as most of us - through Pinterest Rose gathered inspiration photos from spaces that she loved and picked out the common theme, whether it was a particular color story or interesting design features. “I usually find a few inspiration images that I just can’t get out of my head,” shares Rose. “I have to love it! Once I love it, I do whatever is needed to figure out how to achieve that look. That’s how I have gradually learned how to use a lot of tools.”

ith her day-to-day life immersed in remodeling and enlightening her much-anticipating, amassed digital community, her days can only be described as “insane.” “I work non stop and never sleep,” laughed the designer. “I think people think it is all fun and games; and don’t get me wrong, I am obsessed with my job and creating and what I do. I just don’t think people realize the time that goes into it. I basically have to be a professional idea maker, builder, filmmaker, video editor, photographer, caption writer, negotiator, business manager, blog writer….you get the idea. On top of being a mom which is already a full time job. It’s a good thing, I love it.” Her personal oasis, remolded with documented blood, sweat and love, can be described as “Scandinavian California casual cool,” smiled the designer. Filled with hues of cool tones that are reminiscent of their namesake region, the blues and greens pay homage to the sea and landscapes that Scandinavia is known for. The clean lines and intelligent use of negative space are also hallmarks of Scandinavian style and architecture. Rose harmoniously marries those elements with special touches that make it family friendly, as she shares her home with her husband and children. Perfectly placed string lights, hidden desert murals, and quirky tile prints make the environment more friendly and gives you that casual, cool feeling. “I love negative space, but for it to be warm and inviting as well,” Rose says as she describes her home. “I usually like something unexpected in the space to make it feel a little playful as well.” The trends that spark joy for the designer now are lighter floors and the return of color to spaces, noting that she is over the all white modern boxes. There is a nexus that exists between fashion and interior design, even if Rose typically will be found in sporting athleisure. Fashion and interior design share the talents of merging the abilities to envision and creatively pull together different ideas to achieve an overall look. For Rose, utility is the common theme that links her work to her personal style. Her home, while beautiful, is first and foremost a place for her family to commune. Her personal style, while cool, primarily serves to allow her to create. “I can’t live without my nice comfortable clothes,” Rose laughed as she points out her unofficial DIY uniform, “like my crop muscle tank and workout pants! I also love wearing hats - they hide all the sawdust.” As for the future, Rose has many ideas. She would love to eventually sell her products, but for the moment will be continuing to develop those ideas. That is the thing about Angela Rose, she is not afraid to try and fail. For her, it is a part of the creative process and is what ultimately leads to the achievement of her amazing feats; and that is the advice she would like to pass on to everyone interested in transforming their own spaces. “Don’t be afraid,” begins the home-maker. “You will mess up. It’s okay. Then you’ll figure it out and be able to look back and say — ‘I did that. I am awesome!’ It doesn’t take a lot to bring joy into your home. Take the first step and stop waiting around!” 99

THE ROYAL TREATMENT with Prince Lorenzo Borghese

A man of the people, Prince Lorenzo Borghese is not your stereotypical royal. His relatives include Pope Paul V Borghese (Prince Camilo Borghese), Napoleon’s sister, Paolina Bonaparte and his late grandmother, cosmetic icon, Princess Marcella Borghese. He is Italian lead of one of the world’s most successful pet care product companies — Prince Lorenzo’s Royal Treatment, co-founder and president of Animal Aid USA, The Bachelor of 2006, and founder, president and taste-tester extraordinaire, in South Beach Brewing Company. Here, the international businessman, activist and modern day prince tells Bode Magazine what is inside his royal wardrobe, the latest hybrid in the beer market, and the amazing grace he has found through his animal aid. By Heather Marie Combs

If you know the name Lorenzo Borghese, then you most likely think of two things — the Italian Bachelor or the prince with two passions, animal care and great beer. Before we joined Borghese in the sunny state of Florida to talk craft beers and his latest venture, we first had to learn more about his personal style and where he finds inspiration. “I’m not really that fashionable to be honest with you,” said the prince with an honest smile. “My resistance to fashion started in high school when I was forced to wear a jacket and tie. I hated it. So my fashion now is just about comfort and that is one of the reasons why I love living in Florida, it’s more jeans and a button down. So looking back, I guess my inspiration for comfort fashion came from hating being forced to wear a suit,” laughed Borghese. While jeans and a classic tee may be Borghese’s go-to ensemble, the entrepreneur still pays homage to the Italian flare that runs through his veins, opting for the slim fit cuts of a tailored Armani suit. Coming from a line of well-dressed successors, Borghese picked up a trick or two when it comes to dressing for the occasion.

106

“When I would go out with my grandparents, I would wear a suit and I’d have to make sure that my hair was perfect, but when going out with friends, I usually wear whatever I want which is often comfort over style, so my advice is to dress for the occasion. My paternal grandfather would wear a suit every single day,” said Borghese. “He would wake up and put on a 3-piece suit, so I think in a way, he received more respect because his suits made him appear intimidating (even though he was an extremely nice man) and they conveyed confidence and great wisdom. It sounds strange but it was so true and due to his fashion choices, he received more respect, at least from me. I don’t know, maybe it subconsciously conveys that you’re taking care of yourself, that you’ve traveled the world and that you’re serious. And he was very serious, at least on the surface, so I think that passion really shows what personality you have and what state of mood you are in.” Currently immersed in the relaxed state of Florida, the prince welcomes the sunshine and the beach embracing the more casual dress code, “because that’s the state of mind you’re in,” beams Borghese; “so for me, it’s always about dressing according to the occasion.”

EXCLUSIVE I use the serum and moisturizer in the morning and at night I use Perlier’s Platinum Black Rice Night Cream and eye serum. That’s it,” reveals Borghese; “and in the shower I use Perlier’s honey or almond soap,” he adds.

Taking style cues from more than just his besuited family lineage, the Italian culture has also had a lasting impression on the charming royal. “Well I can say this,” begins Borghese, “I personally believe that the men in Italy dress better than the men in the United States and that’s one of the reasons women love Italian men. If men in the United States could dress like Italian men, I believe they would have better luck on their dates. But again, it takes a lot more effort and usually more money,” laughs the casually dressed Italian with an accepting shrug. That being said, “One of the most celebrated days for me was when Wall Street went casual.” Fortunately for this good-looking man, casual attire does not mean slouching in the skincare department. Being well-versed in the industry of cosmetics, it is no surprise that Borghese is loyal to his daily skincare regimen. “U Beauty has a really great serum and moisturizer. It’s a new line that has been getting a lot of attention and the results after you use it are incredible. It’s just an amazing skin care line.

108

While diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, Borghese has made it his life’s mission to aid and protect man’s best friend. Given his first dog on his 21st birthday, Belle, a kind-eyed Labrador, his love and passion for animals was ignited; “but by the time she was five she started developing really bad skin issues. At that time, doing research on the internet wasn’t possible so I went to the library to determine what was causing her skin issues. What I learned was that traditional pet shampoos are really shampoos formulated for human skin, not dog’s skin, and dogs and humans have different skin, including different pH levels. That is why the shampoos I was using on Belle were the cause of her dry skin. It’s also why veterinarians were suggesting that I only bathe her once a month. I thought that was weird. Why would I only be able to bathe her once a month? After two years of research, I developed a shampoo and conditioner formula for Belle. These formulas excluded all the ‘bad’ ingredients that were okay for human skin but could potentially irritate a dog’s skin. And what a difference these formulas had on Belle. Her fur looked amazing, shiny and silky, and she stopped scratching. I also used real fragrance oil versus synthetic fragrances and as a result, she really smelled amazing.” He was able to create these formulas by using his family ties in the cosmetic’s industry. What came next may not have been intentional, but it was inevitable. “After seeing the results - that Belle no longer suffered from skin irritations and her coat was shiny and silky, I knew I had to share these products with other dog owners — and the Royal Treatment was born.” As if launching a leading pet care product line for the sensitive skin of our beloved four legged companions was not enough, Borghese took it a step further. The co-founder and president of Animal Aid USA, a volunteer organization dedicated to helping animals, has saved over 30,000 dogs since 2012. “You can bump that to over 32,000 now,” said Borghese with humble pride. “We rescue a little over 300 dogs a month now and some months are bigger than others, but we’re over 32,000 lives saved. Everyone who does it with me, loves doing it. We are all volunteers and saving dogs is our passion.”

Working hard to fill a much-needed gap in the world for animal advocates, not only are the animals moved by his selfless mission, but a kind-hearted man showed his support to Borghese’s cause in a way the co-founder will never forgot. “I met a man at a party in New York City, and upon meeting he said, ‘You know, my mother, she was the heir to my estate but she passed away and now I would like to leave my inheritance to an animal charity. Do you have any recommendations?’ I said ‘Yes, why don’t you leave it to ours.’ He messaged me on Facebook several months later, ‘Do you remember me? We met at a party and I want to learn more about your organization.’ So I sent him some information and introduced him to Karen Talbot, who is the other co-founder of Animal Aid and the best person in dog rescue I have ever met. Sadly, several months later he died. I was unaware of his death until Karen called me and said, ‘We just got a check for $500,000’. We did a caravan in memory of him. This story reminds me of Billy Currington’s song, ‘People are Crazy.’ It’s about a man he meets in a bar who ends up leaving his entire inheritance to him. Just goes to show that you should always be kind to everyone, even a complete stranger.

Today, Prince Lorenzo Borghese is well underway in his latest venture — South Beach Brewing Company, pleasantly located in South Beach, Florida. Always interested in this industry, the prince noticed a lack of breweries in Florida and sought the opportunity to fill that gap. “I’m a guy that grew up drinking beer (legally) when I was younger and what I like about beer now, besides the taste, is that it brings people together,” shares the entrepreneur. “You usually have a beer during a celebration, whether it’s to celebrate the end of a hard, but productive work day, a birthday or an amazing well-deserved vacation. When you crack open that beer you’ve earned it! You are in a good state of mind, a happy and positive state of mind. For me, the industry is about brining people together. Friends, family, and strangers that become friends and for this reason I love being part of the industry. In a way, it enables me to be a part of people’s amazing memories. That’s why on each can and beer cap you will find the words, ‘I Love Right Now,’ as beer is about enjoying the moment.” While breweries may be missing in Florida, until now, Borghese also noticed a missing beer in the industry. Enter the Strawberry Orange Mimosa Sparkling Ale — a hybrid between a hard seltzer and a beer. “It’s more of a beer than a hard seltzer, but I really wanted to create a beer that focused on the health conscious trends. It’s GMO free and gluten free, it also contains 100% natural Florida orange juice and is low in sugar and calories. It’s a real Florida beer as it’s brewed with Florida oranges. It’s also the official ‘Brunch Beer’ as it is an easy drinking beer, and can be drank from morning until bedtime. It also has electrolytes, and that’s just an added bonus.”

“We rescue a little over 300 dogs a month now and some months are bigger than others, but we’re over 32,000 lives saved. Everyone who does it with me, loves doing it.”

Much like this generous man, Borghese also has a soft spot in his heart for Georgian Beagle, Grace. Grace survived the gas chamber in Georgia and was adopted by a very nice gentleman, Phil Draughon. “They used to euthanize dogs in Georgia by using gas, and because she survived, the news got out about her survival. People were obviously shocked about this horrific and cruel way to euthanize animals and as a result, using the gas chamber in Georgia was banned. As the story grew in popularity, other states banned the use of the gas chamber. To this day, that was the most rewarding adoption story that I’ve witnessed because it banned the gas chamber, not just in Georgia, but in countless states. So in celebration of Grace, we organized a caravan in her honor called Amazing Grace Caravan. She became the poster child of banning gas chambers. Sadly, Grace died about two years ago, but her memory is alive and well today,” shared Borghese. Now that is hero status; and while Borghese may be the hero to canine companions around the world, his parents deem hero status in his eyes. “I know it sounds cheesy, but [my parents] brought me up this way. They brought me up to care. They’ve always loved animals and they’ve always been supportive of nonprofits. My parents always loved St. Jude’s. I just follow what I’ve been taught and my parents are extremely kind, generous and you know, I think they brought me up right,” acknowledged Borghese with a respectful air of gratitude.

Expecting to be operating by the end of November, South Beach Brewing Company is soon to be your home away from home. If you are in Florida, you can also buy their beer at their many distribution locations around the state — “And if not,” Borghese adds, “you can go to our website and order directly from southbeachbrew.com.” As he prepares to head back to his many roles, the prince leaves us with these parting words: “It’s been a hard time for us all, and do what you can to support the local community. You know a lot of people who have lost their jobs, have lost their business and are struggling, and everyone needs to support local as best they can. Also, many people are suffering from depression and one phone call can do so much. So continue to call your family and friends. We’ll get through this. When times are tough and you’re upset, crack open a beer, you’ll feel better. Get your day started right with a Strawberry Orange Mimosa. There’s a smile in every bottle. And go adopt a dog!”

rom Dallas to Los Angeles to Vancouver, Lizzy Greene continues to dominate whatever domain she enters. “Spontaneous, optimistic, [and] hardworking,” Greene has always loved the art of performing, both on stage and on screen. “I started theater when I was in second grade and I really just wanted to be on Broadway,” the actress begins. “I did shows with our little theater group in Dallas and found a family of people who all shared the same interests I did.” After performing for a few years at the local theater, Greene was signed by an agency and began auditioning for television. “One thing led to another and I was swept up into a Nickelodeon show, then onto ABC, and the rest is yet to come!” Greene gleams. “I still have many moments where I think, ‘How the heck did this happen?’”

as well as give them advice on social media,” laughs the modern day influencer. While Greene might advise her costars on social media management, the actress shared one of her favorite days on set where her costars guided her behind the wheel, literally. “I was shooting a scene in season 1 with Romany and James. I was fifteen and learning to drive in the script. And though I had my permit in real life, I’d never driven such an expensive car, much less with cameras and a crew of people inside,” Greene reminisces. “So there were many moments where the two of them were legit teaching me things between takes and there were also some moments where I made a few laughable mistakes. Shoutout to James for jumping into the driver’s side a few times to fix them,” Greene laughs. “I did successfully parallel park between a Tesla and a Mercedes, which was nerve-racking to say the least. Definitely one of my favorite shoot days.”

“Your originality keeps you different from everyone around you and by choosing to not conform, you are rare.”

Landing her first starring role in Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, & Dawn at the age of eleven, the actress spent four of her formative years filled with sitcom hi-jinx and the honing of her comedic craft. Growing up in the public eye, however, has not been that difficult for Greene. “It’s been pretty cool because a lot of my fans and supporters have grown up alongside me,” shares the actress. Following the Nickelodeon show’s final season in 2018, Greene was offered the role of Sophie Dixon in ABC’s hit drama A Million Little Things, starring alongside notable actors like David Giuntoli (Grimm), Romany Malco (Weeds, 40 Year Old Virgin), James Roday Rodriguez (Psych, Dukes of Hazard), and Stephanie Szostak (Dinner for Schmucks, Iron Man 3). “My transition from a kid’s show to a drama was timely, but also quite difficult,” reveals Greene. “The first few months I was on the show I was really learning how to act all over again, as it was not only a single cam, but also with a lot more serious subject matter.” Armed with training and determination, the actress learned from her peers, adjusted to the new situation, and prevailed. “I learned so much from my costars — and I describe it as like going to acting class every day. Most of my crew mates have done this for so long and it really shows through their craft,” admires Greene. “So, I’m always happy to take advice from them,

When she is not practicing to be the next road racer, Greene is always exploring an artistic avenue. “I’m drawing every minute of my free time,” the actress admits. “My family always jokes that I can’t have any form of paper in front of me without drawing on it.” While the actress has an affinity for the arts, her real passion parallels her paramount success as an actor-on-the-rise. Working in a range of entertainment genres and alongside covet-worthy cast mates has been “crazy and exhilarating” proclaims Greene. “I’ve been very lucky to have met some incredible actors and work with some amazing people.” With all of her early successes, Greene has certainly learned many lessons along the way. “You learn to hustle and not take things personally, because a lot of what you go out for you don’t get. If you can learn to take rejection with pride, and turn the frustration into drive, you will only get better,” imparts the flourishing talent. “To my aspiring actors,” she further advises, “I always recommend to read scripts from your favorite movies and shows because you can see how the actors and filmmakers interpreted the text and brought it to life.”

“I specifically grew a lot in this time period because I felt as if I was doing film study on the performances I was watching. Since I had such a long hiatus from AMLT, I spent a lot of my time watching masterclasses and reading books and scripts from my favorite films. To those who are feeling a loss of inspiration, I feel you!” empathized Greene. “What helped me combat un-productivity was the planning and goal setting I made myself for every month. I daydreamed a lot, worked on multiple projects, really focused on school, and chatted with my team every now and then to keep the hard-working mindset alive,” divulged the actress. “Sharing your goals with others helps to keep you inspired and it also means that you can encourage each other to get to where you want to go. Just remember, there is never a victory without a leap or an idea.”

“Some other tips I give is to never rush (unless it’s a character choice), use everything around you when you act, and to treat silence as if it’s precious,” Greene continues. “A quote from Uta Hagen’s book, Respect for Acting, is that ‘you’re never done.’ When you act, there is no beginning or end, there is only the ‘now.’” The “now” for many people, including Greene, has either been put on hold entirely or derailed indefinitely due to the global pandemic. For her mental health and choice of self-care, the actress used to frequent yoga and barre classes, often attending every night. Now that lockdown measures are still affecting the normalcy of everyday life and events, Greene has been focusing more on her art and on running. “Both are really therapeutic for me, as one allows me to be creative and the other allows me to de-stress my mind,” shared the starlet. The time in quarantine has affected more than just her exercise regimen. It has also affected her creativity, content creation, and her process as an actor — though, not necessarily in a negative way. “In quarantine, I’m sure all of us spent some time watching movies and TV,” the actress begins. 114

Greene has certainly made the leap from primarily acting to becoming a social media influencer to boot. Familiar with the life alterations of being an actor, the public forum of social media has not deterred the rising star from continuing to maintain her authenticity. And while the budding actress does boast quite the following, Greene does prefer to maintain a modicum of privacy. “I like to keep my private life private and since actors have such public lives to begin with, there’s something special about having some things to yourself,” Greene explained. As for any catty comments or malicious mentions, Greene understands that these kinds of attacks, unfortunately, “come with the job” and does not take them to heart. “Whenever I see a comment on my account that isn’t the kindest, I try to empathize with the person who wrote it,” Greene shared. “Since they don’t know me, nor do I know them, I try not to take it personally. But, it’s easy to get wrapped up in people’s perception of you. As long as you know who you are and where your heart is,” offers the actress, “you learn to smile and wave to comments like that.” Smiling and maturely waving to the evolving pressures and expectations of the spotlight has allowed Greene to stay true to herself. “Being authentic is quite possibly the most important thing one has to remember in this business,” Greene states. “Your originality keeps you different from everyone around you and by choosing to not conform, you are rare. I know it’s cheesy to say ‘be yourself ’,” the actor grins, “but choose to be a sunflower in a field of dandelions.

taying grateful and grounded is something my family has enforced in me my whole life — and that starts with being thankful for everything you are granted,” Greene exclaims with an air of humble gratitude. “Keep family and friends important, and never turn your back on those who care about you.” Striving to be that sunflower amongst dandelions demands confidence — a quality which Greene unapologetically emits — and sacrifice. “I always say you have to sacrifice 90% to get 10,” the actress wisely begins. “Your work becomes a part of you and sometimes that means missing out on a lot of different milestones in life. However, I’ve been doing this since I was ten, so I’ve learned to love everything about the business. And while I do get a little tired of waking up at 4-5 a.m. all the time,” Greene cringed remising her often before dawn call time, “acting is everything to me and I hope to do it for decades to come.” As busy as she will be with acting for the next several decades, Greene is currently painting her horizon as she gazes into her future endeavors. “This industry is great because there isn’t a bottle cap on creativity. I definitely see a portion of my career being focused on producing and filmmaking, as I have a few film ideas and remakes in mind at the moment,” the actress affirmed. “Fashion is also a large passion of mine as well, so let’s keep all the doors open!” With open doors and an open mindset, Greene is the type of fashionista who will wear anything, as long as the styling is right. “I’m a big fan of mixing patterns and fabrics, layering different items, and mismatching jewelry, but the accessories are everything,” the actress confessed. “The shoes and jacket are the make or break pieces in my outfits.” For Greene, however, no outfit is complete without her mini Takashi Murakami LV bag. “It was a gift from one of my fav crew members on NRDD,” Greene heartened, “so it’s extra special.” In that bag? You will probably find her Jo Malone’s Velvet Rose and Oud perfume, the one beauty item the actress cannot live without.

With her acting career expanding, her original sense of style sharpening, and her social media influence growing, there is so much we can expect to see next for mature for her years, Lizzy Greene: “a venture into film, the release of some music, maybe a deeper dive into art, and a whole lot of surprises.” 117
