A regeneração e a necessidade de repensar a cidade, senão fazem parte do pensamento do arquitecto e do designer actuais, devem rapidamente solidificar-se em cada um dos seus projectos. A cidade do Porto tem a cada esquina sombras do seu passado. Os edifícios abandonados alastram-se, evidenciando que não existe uma resposta imediata e directa às necessidades dos seus actuais habitantes. O despertar para a plenitude do futuro que se aproxima torna-se cada vez mais importante, mas a questão fulcral é: como conseguimos manter o ecletismo e a história de uma cidade recheada de memórias, e ao mesmo tempo projectar obras que reflectem os anseios e as necessidades da actualidade. A arquitectura viral surge como uma ponte entre o passado e o presente, onde as noções científicas sobre o parasitismo conseguem ser transpostas para a arquitectura, como um meio de injectar contemporaneidade em edifícios que se encontram estagnados na sua época de nascimento. Como uma possível tipologia de reabilitação, a arquitectura viral descontextualiza o edificado, intervindo nas barreiras anteriormente estabelecidas. As regras impostas pela arquitectura rígida do passado dão lugar ao projecto arquitectónico visto como algo plástico e abstracto e abre caminho à intervenção desinibida e desprovida de frieza na cidade.

ABOUT MASTER’S THESIS
If the regeneration and the need to rethink the city aren't part of the current architect and designer thought, they must quickly solidify it in each of their projects. The city of Porto has in every corner shadows of its past. The abandoned buildings rage on, showing that there it isn’t an immediate and direct response to the needs of the current residents. The awakening to the fullness of the future that approaches becomes increasingly important, but the key question is: how do we keep the eclecticism and the history of a town filled with memories while creating projects that reflect the today’s desires and needs. Viral architecture emerges as a bridge between past and present, where the scientific notions of parasitism can be incorporated in the architecture, as a way to inject contemporaneity in buildings that are stagnant in their time of birth. As a possible typology of rehabilitation, viral architecture decontextualises the building by intervening in the previously established barriers. The rules imposed by the rigid architecture of the past give way to the architectural project seen as something abstract and plastic and paves the way for the uninhibited and devoid of coldness intervention in the city.

Os arquitectos Dagur Eggertsson (Rintala Eggertsson Architects, Noruega), Paolo Mestriner (Studiozero, Itália) e Massimiliano Spadoni (Spadoni Aechitetto, Itália) voltam a Portugal para dinamizar um novo workshop de auto-construção, desta vez inserido no Remade in Portugal, na sua 6ª edição dedicada ao Remade in Casa. A ESAD convidou os arquitetos para desenvolver o workshop Arena Selfmade, com o objectivo de construir nas instalações da Fundação EDP, ao lado da Casa da Música, um anfiteatro com base no reaproveitamento e reutilização de materiais e na ligação ao contexto social e ambiental. "Este projecto baseia-se na criação de um espaço dedicado a conferências e foi projectado a partir do enaltecimento da arena pública, aberta a visitantes e a pessoas, que vivem perto da exposição." The architects Dagur Eggertsson (Rintala Eggertsson Architects, Norway), Paolo Mestriner (Studiozero, Italy), and Massimiliano Spadoni (Spadoni Aechitetto, Italy) returns to Portugal to foster a new self-construction workshop, this time inserted in the Remade in Portugal, in their 6th edition dedicated to Remade in Casa. ESAD invited the architects to develop the Arena Selfmade workshop, with the aim of building, on the premises of Fundação EDP, next to the Casa da Música, an amphitheater based on the reuse of materials and the connection to the social and the environmental context. "This project is based on the creation of a space dedicated to conferences and it was designed from the enhancement of the public arena, open to visitors and people who live near the exhibition." No cruzamento das ruas de Miguel Bombarda e de Cedofeita, cresce um edifício do séc. XIX, que a ninguém passa despercebido. Visto que ele está localizado num lugar recheado de arte, dinamismo, juventude e novas tendências, este local tornou-se perfeito para criação de um hostel low cost onde podemos respirar intervenção e experimentação. Embora no ínicio o objectivo fosse organizar todo o hostel, o projecto acabou por se focar num espaço. No nosso caso, optamos por uma secção do primeiro piso, no qual encontramos um restaurante com diferentes áreas e ambientes, os quais são unificados através do conceito baseado numa floresta psicadélica, colorida e divertida.

In the intersection of Miguel Bombarda and Cedofeita streets, grows a building of the XIX century, that doesn't go unnoticed. Because it's located in a place full of art, dynamism, youth and new trends, made this location perfect to create a low cost hostel where we can breathe intervention and experimentation. Although at the beginning the goal was to organize the whole hostel, the project ended up focused in one area. In our case, we choose a section of the first floor, where we can find a restaurant with different areas and ambiences, that are unified through the concept based in a psychedelic, colourful and playful forest.

PROJECTO VENCEDOR
Em colaboração com a Câmara de Albergaria-a-Velha foi lançado um concurso com o objectivo de se criar um display expositivo para a escola primária, sendo esse igualmente o tema. Todo o conceito do nosso projecto esteve envolto nas memórias da escola primária, com foco na diversão do recreio, o que contrasta com a rigidez das aulas. Retratou-se o exterior através de um degradê entre o verde (vegetação) e amarelo (tílias, as quais são muito utilizadas nas antigas escolas primárias). Do verde para o amarelo, passamos das brincadeiras (com um display modular, com brinquedos expostos) para as aulas (que agora estão no tecto, com a organização de mesas e cadeiras). As palavras de ordem desta exposição são: "as aulas foram para o tecto... vamos aproveitar o recreio!"

ABOUT WINNING PROJECT
In collaboration with C창mara de Albergaria-a-Velha, was released a contest in order to create an exhibition display for the primary school, which was also the theme. The whole concept of our project is around the memories of the primary school, with focus on the fun from the playground, which contrasts with the rigidity of the classes. We've portrayed the outside through a gradient between green (vegetation) and yellow (linden trees, which are largely used in the old primary schools). From green to yellow, we move on from the games (with a modular display, with toys exhibited) to the classes (which are now on the ceiling, with the organization of tables and chairs). The watchwords of this exhibition are: "the classes went to the ceiling... let's enjoy the playground!"

Com a participação no concurso da Experimenta Design, Action for Age, entrámos em contacto com as vidas e os problemas dos habitantes da Praia de Angeiras, mais especificamente, da Praia dos Pescadores. A quantidade de utensílios dispersos pelo areal e a falta de acessos e de higiene saltaram à nossa atenção, fazendo desta praia uma boa localização para o desenvolvimento do projecto para o concurso, utilizando os hábitos e tradições dos habitantes como inspiração. Este projecto, desenvolvido em grupo, reúne a construção de um paredão (para arrumar os barcos), um passadiço (para melhorar os acessos), áreas de arrumação e, sendo esse o ponto mais importante, um sistema de reutilização da água das chuvas (para lavar o peixe e utensílios).

With the participation in the Experimenta Design contest, Action for Age, we got in touch with the lives and problems of the inhabitants of Praia de Angeiras, more specifically, the Praia dos Pescadores. The amount of the dispersed utensils in the areal and the lack of access and hygiene jumped to our attention, making this beach a perfect location for the development of the project for the contest, using the habits and traditions of the inhabitants as inspiration. This project, developed in group, gathers the construction of a sea wall (for arranging the boats), a gangway (to improve the access), storage areas and, the most important point, a system for reusing the rainwater (to washe the fish and utensils).

Metal Box foi um projecto no qual tínhamos de desenvolver uma estrutura com 2,5 m x 2,5 m x 5 m, feita de placas de aço. Libertando a estrutura dessas medidas preconcebidas, decidímos cortar o paralelipípedo em fatias e depois cada uma dessas fatias rodava numa direcção.

Metal Box was a project where we had to develop a structure with 2,5 x 2,5 x 5 meters, made of metal sheets. Liberating the structure of that preconceived measures, we decided to cut the parallelepiped in slices and then each of that slices rotated in one direction.

Utilizando como suporte construtivo a Modular System e o espaço exterior de uma habitação ainda em construção, este projecto passou por idealizar uma família e criar um pavilhão de suporte à habitação. O pavilhão foi pensado como um refúgio ao mundo real. Neste espaço, inspirado sobretudo pelo filme Marie Antoinette de Sofia Coppola, vive-se um ambiente divertido e colorido, a partir do qual nos podemos perder no jardim.

Using as building support the Modular System and the outer space of an house under construction, this project went through idealizing a family and creating a supporting pavilion to the house. The pavilion was designed as a refuge from the real world. In this space, specially inspired in the Marie Antoinette by Sofia Coppola, we breathe a fun and colorful environment and also we can lose ourselves in the garden.

Frescura. Luminosidade. Reflexos. Movimento. Brilhos. O nosso local de intervenção foi o hall de entrada do prédio nº 285, na Rua Arquitecto Marques da Silva, na Boavista (Porto). Ao longo do projecto, trabalhámos a concentração e dispersão de um bloco metálico preconcebido, em forma de diamante, como meio de uniformizar todo o espaço, mesmo que existissem diferentes níveis de privacidade.

Freshness. Luminosity. Reflections. Movement. Sparkles. Our intervention location was the hall of the building ner 285, in Arquitecto Marques da Silva street, in Boavista (Porto). Throughout the project, we worked the concentration and the dispersion of a preconceived metal block diamond shaped, in order to unify the entire space, even if there was different privacy degrees.

PROJECTO VENCEDOR
A Euramax lançou um concurso para se desenhar uma nova fachada para a sua fábrica, na Holanda. Como suporte tivemos os seus painéis imprimíveis e podíamos criar um desenho em vector ou utilizar uma fotografia pessoal. Apesar da nossa imensa vontade e desejo de viajar e conhecer novos universos, nunca fomos à Holanda. Mas é impossível não se criar uma fantasia sobre tudo o que poderíamos viver e ver nela. As casas coloridas, as tulipas, os moinhos e as bicicletas, paralelamente, com a alegria que seria poder vê-la ao vivo e a cores. Resumidamente, o nosso trabalho retrata um mundo imaginário em forma de um postal de recordações da Holanda, tanto para intensificar a sua localização (tendo a Alemanha tão perto), mas também para camuflar e dar um novo universo à própria fábrica, reforçando que o produto pode ajudar o seu cliente a criar novas paisagens e fachadas cheias de cor para despertar as nossas cidades.

ABOUT WINNING PROJECT
Euramax launched a competition to design a new facade for their factory, in Netherlands. As support, we had their printable panels and we could create a vector drawing or we could use a personal photo. Despite our strong desire to travel and discover new countries, we never went to Netherlands. But it’s impossible not to create a fantasy about everything we could live and see in this magical place. Colorful houses, tulips, windmills and bicycles, along with our joy to finally see it in front of us. In brief, our project portrays an imaginary world shaped in a souvenir postcard from Netherlands, to intensify the factory location (that is close to Germany), but also to camouflage and give a new universe to the factory itself, reinforcing the concept that the product can help their clients to create new landscapes and new facades that definitely can wake up our cities to a world full of color.
