B OERNE B USINESS M ONTHLY | April 2018

Recently, Cascade Caverns had the film team from Passmore Labs come to the cave. Guests will get to experience the cave via a mind blowing virtual reality headset. The technology is truly impressive and amazing. The festival will also feature a rappelling demo and an exotic animal exhibit. Are we seriously getting a lemur in the Hill Country? Yep. How could that not be cool for kids? Several groups will have educational booths such as Texas Parks and Wildlife, a Sticks and Stones bat exhibit, an Edwards Aquifer exhibit and many others. Come visit them all! Of course, there will be delicious food from our food trucks and a Biergarten next to the German band. A Rootbiergarten will be next to the bratwurst booth. Children will get to play on the jumpy castle, go geocaching and participate in the Cascade Caverns Scavenger Hunt. The obvious and most fascinating attraction is the Caverns. Tours will run from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm every 30 minutes. Admission is $15 per car and the first fifty cars will receive a Cascade Caverns swag bag. Plan on visiting the new gift shop where you will find many educational and fun souvenirs from your experience at the Cascade Caverns CaveFest. We will see you there. BBM

vehicle maintenance

With summer just around the corner

S

IT’S A GREAT TIME TO GET YOUR VEHICLE READY!

Spring is here and summer won’t be long behind and in South Texas! That means t-shirts, flip flops, BBQ and trips to the beach. But before you hit the road, here are a few tips to get your vehicle ready for the summer road trips: Quick inspection. At least twice a year (just before summer and just before winter), be proactive and have your fluid levels, battery terminal connections, belts, hoses, wipers, brakes, tires and lighting checked to catch small issues before they become big issues. Check your AC. In South Texas, having good AC in your vehicle is a must. Have the system checked by a certified technician. Check and/or replace tires. Summer can be taxing on tires. Heat and sunlight breaks down the rubber more quickly. Good tires are a matter of safety and fuel economy so don’t skip this one. Check and/or change your oil. Higher temperatures require higher oil weight/ viscosity. Most new vehicles run fine year-round on the same viscosity oil, but if you’re driving an older vehicle or drive in South Texas, it might be helpful to upgrade to a heavier oil to compensate for internal engine heat and wear. However, before making the switch, do your research and make sure your car’s make/model will perform well with heavier oil in the summer. Top off fluids. Your radiator’s antifreeze does not need replacing every year. You should have your coolant tested using a coolant hydrometer. Don’t forget to have your windshield washer fluid topped off. Check your battery date. Most worry about their battery dying under the impact of cold weather, but what they don’t realize is that car batteries are more likely to die in the heat of the summer. If your battery is over three years old, get it tested. Change your air filters. Riding around with dirty filters prevents fresh air from getting to your engine. Dirty air can hamper your engines performance as well as your fuel economy. A clean filter helps the cabin air stay clean and fresh and keeps outside smells and pollens out of your heating and A/C systems. With the QuickLane of Boerne opening at IH 10 and Scenic Loop Rd, all these little tips can be handled in one fast, convenient location. QuickLane of Boerne can service any make or model at a competitive price plus, they have the guaranteed lowest price on name brand tires everyday. Let the pros at the new QuickLane of Boerne get your vehicle ready for that summer road trip. BBM

B OERNE B USINESS M ONTHLY | April 2018

“Every business has a story to tell,” said Debi Burrows, Owner/ Head Storyteller/Strategist of Penguin Suits. “Give me five minutes and I will find something special about every one. Our clients are the heart of our business and it is our job to figure out what is unique about them and then tell their story in an engaging and fun way. We simply make our clients look as good as they are.” Burrows, who has grown her business into an award-winning advertising agency, spends most of her time strategizing. “There is a lot of research and planning that goes into creating game plans to make our clients #1 in their industry,” Debi added. “Many local business owners are really good at what they do, but they don’t know how to get the word out to their target market. That’s what we do best.” Burrows explains that one of their focuses is to educate clients about what is possible for their business in their hotly contested industries. It’s about being differentiated, bold,

visible, consistent and having a laser-focus on the key benefits sought by the target market.” A primary goal at Penguin Suits is to help local companies grow their business. Over the years, it has done that exceedingly well. “We took on a particular business that was struggling. We redesigned their website, digital ads, and their entire marketing campaign. We refined their SEO (search engine optimization) and within six months they grew their business by 30%,” she said. “We’ve taken other businesses where their social media was doing poorly and where they were spending considerable money on Google AdWords, but without seeing good results. By improving their social media, their website, and SEO, we were able to completely eliminate their AdWords budget. The result? They got more customer leads and eliminated spending hundreds of dollars a month on AdWords.” “We pick businesses to work with based on their philosophy. In order to market our clients successfully, we know it is important to really get to know them. I’ll take the whole staff and we will go to their offices or take them to lunch. We ask them all sorts of questions, and in the process figure out how best to market their brand for growth. Only when we get their whole story, can we really get to work,” said Burrows. Penguin Suits has a team of specialists dedicated to the development of a marketing plan that includes website development, SEO, outbound and inbound digital assets to attract new customers, brochures, logo creation, branded landing pages, social media profiles, traditional marketing campaigns, reputation management, digital media campaigns, and much more. According to Debi, “We know you have a company to run, clients to attend to, and payroll to meet. The last things you need to worry about are your Google Analytics, Facebook likes, or what to write in your blog. When you make Penguin Suits your outsourced marketing department we will take on all the complex marketing tasks for your company so you can focus on what matters most.” “Marketing today is very complex,” said Burrows. “We

know how to play the game and get results. Our team works hard to stay ahead of what’s happening and to have the knowledge available so we can put our clients in the right places to get the best results.” To ensure clients’ get a good return on their investment, Penguin Suits continuously evaluates all aspects of their marketing campaign. It’s part of the firm’s accountability process. “We show clients how long we’ve worked on all parts of their campaign, the development we’ve done, the expected return, and what we’re doing to map that return. When things don’t go the way we want, we make adjustments until we get the desired result,” Burrows declared. “I want to be sure my clients understand what we’re doing for them and how their money is being invested.” Penguin Suits has been in Boerne for 17 years and as of July 2017 was able to purchase the perfect spot for their growing business. “We are so excited about our new location,” said Debi. “We are right off of IH-10 and now have plenty of space for both the existing team and the expected growth. We have worked hard to create a fun and creative environment. Everyone has even picked out inspirational quotes that mean something to them and we have them up on the walls. Up the staircase we have what we call the ‘inspiration machine’ and we have worked on several team-building exercises, like our penguin bowling pins, that help to personalize the space!” For Debi, this business is something she was born to do. “I wrote my first press release when I was only nine!” As a child, Burrows sat with the men of her family as they discussed what was happening with their businesses. Overhearing that her father was planning to bring in a band to his restaurant, she suggested that they put an ad in the paper. However, it appeared that nobody knew what she was talking about. “I wrote a story about the band performing at my father’s restaurant on a yellow loose-leaf paper and presented it to the local newspaper along with a Polaroid picture and they ran it! From that success grew a passion for marketing and promotion. I knew what I wanted to go to continued on page 18

college for when I was only nine. I wanted to learn marketing to help small businesses. It is definitely the realization of a dream as I watch our clients grow and thrive!” After college, Burrows landed a job working in public relations and advertising for the New York State Nurses Association. In 1992, she moved from New York to Texas with her 2-week-old son. “Back then, the Internet was just starting. So I started hand painting children’s clothes,” she said. A Penguin outfit she made for her son drew raves from her local mom’s group. They wanted their own favorite animal outfit for their kids. Soon after, Burrows put up a website and was marketing her shirts and designs across the country and even as far away as Germany. Her sales brought in enough money to buy a computer and start her marketing business in Boerne – proudly named Penguin Suits after the apparel, which started it all. “That’s how Penguin Suits was born. My son’s original suit hangs in our office today,” she remarked. While Penguin Suits’ success has been built on the outstanding customer service,

attention to detail and the quality of their products and marketing services provided, none of that would be possible without the team of highly skilled people all working together to create an amazing end result. In fact, Burrows strongly believes in building a strong team and regularly has her employees participate in team building activities. “We have blown glass at Caliente Hot Glass, done scavenger hunts around San Antonio, participated in the YMCA’s Turkey Trot, and currently have plans to build a large sculpture together outside of our office,” said Debi. Burrows and her team are also big believers in supporting the community. Debi is a committee chair for Hill Country Women in Business. “I believe in helping to promote the organization and my fellow business owners. We like each other and strive to use, support and refer business to each other,” she stated. “We also collected donations for Hurricane Harvey victims. We made about ten trips to the San Antonio Food Bank and dropped off carloads of donations. We posted it on Facebook and had people from all over dropping food items off at our new office to be donated.

We thought it would be nice to make a drop off point where people did not have to drive all the way into San Antonio.” Debi also proudly shared that, “We are also big supporters of Christian Women’s Job Corp and the Boerne Community Theatre. Keisha, our Office Manager/Librarian/ Head Analyst, is on the board and directs a play at least once a year. Connie, who is our Business Development/Expert Elocutionist/QA Specialist, has served as stage manager and is on the Board along with me. Kim, our Content Creator/ Novel Narrator/SEO and Compliance Specialist, and I have even been in productions!” According to Burrows, “Building this business has definitely been an adventure! boerne police lieutenant graduates from fbi national academy

B

Boerne Police Lieutenant Cody Lackey, who is 4th in command, recently graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Lt. Lackey was one of two hundred and twenty-three law enforcement officers who made up the 271st session of the National Academy, which consisted of men and women from forty-eight states. Included in the class are members from the District of Colombia, 18 international countries, five military organizations, and five federal civilian organizations. Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy Program, held at the FBI Academy, offers ten weeks of leadership, media relations, contemporary issues in law enforcement, forensics, death investigations, crisis negotiations, counter terrorism, and fitness training for selected officers having proven records as professionals within their agencies. Less than 1% of all law enforcement officers in the U.S. receives the honor to attend. Since 1972, National Academy students have been able to earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia due to the accreditation by the university of the many courses offered. Chief Kohler is proud to have Lt. Lackey join him, Lt. Perez, and Assistant Chief Page as graduates. Leadership and succession planning are important steps that the department is taking to make sure the next generation of officers will be ready to lead the Boerne Police Department and serve our citizens. Stock Market Volatility Is Back

26

After 715 days without one, the S&P 500, a broad-based stock market index, had a swift 10% correction (drop) at the beginning of February. While stock market drops can be scary, a 10% correction is not unusual. In fact, most years, investors in the stock market will see a 10% correction at some point during the year. While many view volatility as a bad thing, savvy investors can take advantage of volatility. In recent months, there have been some subtle signs that inflation may be picking up. In February, a strong employment report and a Fed that acknowledged they could raise rates multiple times in 2018 to fight inflation, caused a sharp correction. That was the initial reason for the selloff. Tariffs placed on imports of steel and aluminum caused another wave of selling into March. Turnover in the Trump administration and a large spending bill added fuel to the fire. As you can see from the chart below, the volatility was completely absent in 2017 but has returned in 2018. In fact, while the S&P 500 had only 8 days in 2017 of moves bigger than 1%, it’s already more than doubled that in the first couple of months of 2018.

fearful or too greedy. Taking advantage of volatility is the key to long-term investing success. “Risk is too often equated with volatility. This is non-sense. Risk isn't volatility, it is the permanent loss of capital.” – James Montier (GMO) This quote really sums it up. Volatility only becomes real risk if you sell. This is simple advice, but not easy. When volatility begins to increase, it’s important to stand back and ask yourself when you will need the money that’s being invested. In general, any money that will be needed in less than 5 years should not be invested in the stock market. Even better, money needed in 10+ years is best suited for stock investing. There is no perfect rule, but generally 10+ years allows enough time to recover from temporary drops. Keep in mind, savings in retirement accounts such as IRAs, 401(K)s, etc. generally cannot be accessed without a penalty until age 59 ½. Even if you are approaching retirement, the expected time horizon for most of your investments is still greater than 10+ years. The bottom line is that time is the biggest factor or variable in defeating volatility. Perhaps a close second in terms of combatting and benefit-

But, volatility is a two-way street, meaning markets can rise in times like this just as fast as they fall as evidenced by the jump in stocks in later February. Volatility is normal. It’s just another way of saying stocks can vibrate. The economic reality of the stock market, (i.e. sales and earnings of underlying companies) is not very volatile from day to day. But, wild movement in stocks on a daily basis is due to irrational investors who are either too

ting from volatility is simply one’s ability to buy more. This means don’t have too much of your portfolio invested in stocks before a correction comes. If a correction does come and you don’t have an appetite to buy more because of your portfolio value falling, then you probably have too high of a percentage in stocks. You should always have just enough stocks to feel a little uncomfortable, but still want to buy

B OERNE B USINESS M ONTHLY | April 2018

more. If you have a well-diversified portfolio, you can sell from other non-stock investments (or “rebalance”) to add to stocks. This is a powerful tool to benefit from volatility. While time horizon and your ability to add to your stock allocation are the best ways to benefit from volatility, here are some other tools investors can use and things to consider: • When an investment’s value falls, ask yourself the following questions: 1. Other than price, what else has changed? 2. Is the original reason to invest still valid? 3. Has this investment ever gone down this much before? If so, would I have done better if I had sold it or if I had bought more? • Measure volatility in percentages, not dollars. As you age, and your wealth grows, a correction can seem more damaging when viewed in dollar terms. Focusing on the percentages helps put it in proper perspective. • If you are investing new money, consider dollar cost averaging or “time stops.” This simply means don’t invest all at once, but plan to spread out over months. This will make for a smoother ride and force you to invest at opportunistic times. For those that never want to have any volatility in their portfolio, the opportunity cost given up by not investing in the stock market is enormous compared to the temporary comfort of sitting on the sidelines. Volatility is one type of risk. But avoiding volatility can oftentimes present a new risk, inflation risk (i.e. not earning enough to outpace inflation over the long-term). Inflation risk is the biggest risk when it comes to investing in interest bearing instruments. The lesson is that every individual is going to take some type of risk. Establishing a proper plan and asset allocation can help determine which risks are worth taking and which ones are not. With this information, an acceptable level of volatility tolerance can be achieved. 6 ways to help heal from concussion

I

article by Dr. Michael A. Garcia

It isn’t one concussion that ultimately causes brain damage, it’s the repeated, mild head trauma over time that leads to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy also known as CTE. Young teens are shown to have a higher risk of developing CTE which has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinson’s over time. EXCITING DISCOVERY Recently, an exciting discovery was made that can detect brain damage from repeated concussions. Here’s the kicker, while people are still alive. Up until then, the only way to confirm CTE was performing a brain autopsy. After brain trauma, a protein called “CLL11” shows up in the blood and is the same protein found in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's patients. A practical example could be an 11-yearold soccer player getting a blood test to determine presence of these protein markers. This information could be a powerful tool to help the family make informed decisions and better choices in regards to their health. The next decisions made will be critical for the health and well being of the child. If you or someone you know experiences a concussion, use these tips to aid in recovery: 1. Avoid tablet, phone and computer usage. The combination of blue light and brainpower it takes to work these devices taxes the brain when it should be focused on rebuilding. 2. Ideally, students should stay home from school a few days under medical supervision. 3. Drink plenty of water, eat high quality foods and supplement with a high quality omega-3 (not the stuff found at Wal-mart, Costco etc.) 4. If you exercise or are in sports, the return date should be set according to your doctor or trainers recommendations. 5. Always get clearance from your medical professional before resuming daily life routines. 6. You can reference many books from professionals that cover: concussion recovery plans on Amazon.com.

QUICK NOTE ON OMEGA3 Omega-3's have shown and continue to show, anti-inflammatory and protective benefits to the brain. After a concussion, the brain is inflamed and on fire, Omega-3's act like the fire department to help put out the flames. Every athlete, young or old should seriously consider taking Omega-3's for not only preventative care from concussion but for maximum health benefit. Avoid big box store brands and go for quality instead. Repeated head trauma can cause abnormal shifting in the head and neck. An abnormal shift can create Secondary Conditions aka symptoms, such as: headaches, numbness and tingling, neck and back pain. With a precise structural exam, Structural Chiropractic Care can help these spinal shifts be detected, corrected and maintained. BBM Dr. Michael A.
