publisher's note Growing up in small town Boerne, the Kendall County Fair was always a big deal! Our friends and family were all excited to meet up and go to the parade, the carnival and of course the rodeo and the dances. I have fond memories of getting squished on the carnival rides by my grandpa when I was little, scrambling for candy at the parades, thinking I was big stuff when I was finally old enough to walk around with my friends on my own and just spending time on those long Labor Day weekends hanging out at the fairgrounds and enjoying all the sites and sounds of the Fair. Now I get to do all of those things with my kids. What a fabulous event that our County should cherish. Just think of all the generations that have similar, great memories! This year marks the 113th year of the Kendall County Fair and Rodeo, turn to page 16 to learn a little more about the history of the Fair, what all they have in store for this year’s Fair and even how you can get involved!! article on personality types. It’s interesting to think about how your specific personality affects everything you do, from your work life to your personal life. Read the article on page 8 and then google some personality type tests online. You never know, figuring out your personality, or even those around you, just may make your day-to-day interactions a little more successful! Has your healthy eating gone out the window this summer? Too many backyard barbecues and stops at the ice cream shop or snocone stand for a cool treat can really get you off track. The folks at Annie’s Apothecary have a solution to reset your body and help you feel better. Turn to page 28 and see why a detox may be just what you need. I hope you all have a great rest of your summer! It will be gone before we know it, so soak up every last bit of sun and jump in the pool a few more times because fall will be here all too soon. (Summer is my favorite, can you tell?) I hope you all have a great August,

The Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) has announced the recipients of its annual Economic Excellence Recognition program for 2017. The Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation (BKCEDC) is one of the thirty-nine organizations that received the 2017 Economic Excellence Recognition. What are You?

Recently, after watching this topic swirl around social media, I asked myself “What are these personality tests that everyone is raving about and how do they relate to the working world?” I did some research and was truly intrigued by how knowing personality types correlated to my everyday life and understanding the different traits could improve my communication skills with co-workers. Personality profile tests have spiked in popularity over the last few years as companies attempt to strengthen communication skills among their employees and cultivate more effective and productive working relationships. During my investigation, I found the most popular tests to be The Enneagram and DISC Assessment. The Enneagram, stemming from the Greek works ennea (nine) and grammos (a written symbol), is a nine-pointed symbol that represents nine distinct strategies for relating to the self, others and the world. Each Enneagram type has a different pattern of thinking, feeling and acting that arises from a deeper inner motivation or worldview. THE 9 TYPES ARE: (1) Orderliness – orderly/planned (2) Helpfulness – helpful and caring (3) Image Focus – impressive and attractive (4) Individualism – unique/different (5) Intellectualism – knowledgeable (6) Security Focus – secure and safe (7) Adventurousness – fun and entertained (8) Aggressiveness – strong and in control

8

by Jennifer Graham, Senior Tax Accountant – ADKF

(9) Calmness – maintain peace/calm DISC Assessment is a personality trait assessment tool based on the DISC personality theory of Dr. William Moulton Marston. In the 1920’s Dr. Marston theorized that people exhibit four distinct behavioral patterns based on how they perceive their environment: (1) Dominance (or drive) – relating to control, power and assertiveness (2) Inducement (or influence) – relating to social situations and communication (3) Submission (or steadiness) – relating to patience, persistence, and thoughtfulness (4) Compliance (or caution/conscientiousness) – relating to structure and organization Now, I know you are super intrigued and dying to know how you would be categorized, or was that just me? Either way, there are several free tests offered online – all you have to do is Google them. Results of my Enneagram test categorized my behavior as Type 2: Helpfulness. People of this personality type are warm and emotional, who care a great deal about their personal relationships and devote an enormous amount of energy to them. Love is their highest ideal. Selflessness is their duty. Giving to others is their reason for being. The DISC Assessment labeled me as mostly submission or steadiness. Falling under this behavioral pattern means that I enjoy interacting with and helping people. My natural supportive and empathetic behavior makes me a good

coach and some people turn to me when they need help or advice. It is pretty remarkable the accuracy of these tests as it relates to my assessment: The tests pinned my personality to a tee. You may be asking yourself “How does this affect me?” and/or “how can I apply this to my professional life?” Knowing your family, friends, coworkers or even client’s personality types may assist in your ability to connect with others, communicating in productive ways, clearly expressing your feelings and thoughts and building healthy, strong and fulfilling relationships. For example, let’s say you have a client who shows traits of dominance. Knowing that they seek power, you can adjust your interactions with them and make them feel like they have control. This could potentially boost their self-image and subconsciously cause them to be more cooperative and appreciative. In the workplace, personality test taking could also be implemented and prove beneficial. Consider two employees teamed together who just can’t get along. Learning through The Enneagram that both employees are Type 8: Aggressiveness, can allow restructuring to pair each employee with someone of a more compromising personality, such as Type 9: Calmness.

This knowledge can also be useful for self-examination and learning how to improve oneself. Upon my own self-reflection, I have noted that because I am generally helping others meet their needs, I tend to forget to take care of my own. This can lead to physical burnout and emotional exhaustion. I recognize that when I am over committing to others, I am in turn falling behind in the work place. To be a top-notch professional while in the office, it is necessary to find a true balance in giving energy to both others and myself. I’m hoping that no matter the line of work you are in as a business professional, you find these personality profile tests useful and can apply them to your personal friendships as well as client relationships and co-worker interactions. Or maybe, like me, you will learn how to adapt your own personality to have a healthier work-life balance.BBM Jennifer Graham is a Senior Tax Accountant at Akin, Doherty, Klein & Feuge, P.C. (ADKF). Boerne Ad Agency Wins 2018 International Creative Award

There were more than 5,000 submissions from 26 countries. These are not great odds for any small to mid-sized advertising agency, let alone a small agency from Boerne, Texas! Penguin Suits was named Silver Winner in the 2018 Summit Creative Award® competition for its website redesign of the Learning Foundations, www.learningfoundations.com. “Working with Penguin Suits has been a great experience. The team’s initiative to understand what we do and what our clients need, has been the underlying factor in getting the results we were looking for from our website.” said Sofia Scarnati, Director of Administration for Learning Foundations. The international recognition of the Summit Creative Award (SCA) celebrates the worldwide creative achievements of small to medium-sized advertising agencies with annual billings under $30 million. Celebrating its 24th year, the SCA has firmly established itself as the premier arbiter of creative excellence for firms of this size. In the past, it has been challenging

for American agencies to win this coveted honor. This year's panel of international judges included professionals from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Sweden, Australia, and Germany. Entries were judged against a stringent set of SCA standards. The Board of Judges chose Penguin Suits for its “innovative and creative concept, strong execution, and the ability to communicate and persuade.” “Winning a Summit Creative Award is an exciting accomplishment with vetted judges, tough criteria, and the blind judging processes,” said Debi Burrows, Head Storyteller and Strategist at Penguin Suits. “We are ecstatic to have been chosen for this prestigious international award and are honored to work with The Learning Foundation. They trusted us with the freedom to explore and innovate,” Burrows continued. As creative authors of great brand messages with more than 60 years’ experience, we know businesses want lead generation. That is why we focus on the marketing and lead generation for you and allow you to focus on what matters most: running your company. Penguin Suits is committed to fulfilling your lead generation expectations, revenue goals, and building a durable and meaningful brand that your market can embrace. About Penguin Suits: Penguin Suits is a results-oriented advertising agency devoted to consistent and effective lead generation! As experienced and creative authors of great brand messaging, we use our 60+ years’ of experience, and innovatively create new lead generation strategies. We handle the marketing and lead generation, so you can focus on running your company. Penguin Suits is a Google Partner, a graduate of the Be San Antonio program and a member of Public Relations Association of America, American Marketing Association, Texas Air Conditioning Contractors Association, Hill Country Women in Business and Boerne Chamber of Commerce. 113th KENDALL COUNTY FAIR AND RODEO Where it all began over a century ago!

W

by Glenda Boerner

We’ve all heard many stories handed down through generations about the old days. Parents telling their kids how their great-great-grand-daddy settled here and built his life from the ground up. Around the late 1840’s Boerne was settled. The local and surrounding residents farmed, ranched, grew vegetables, and grains. Women spent countless hours cooking, baking and sewing to keep their families fed and clothed. Many used their talents by offering services to the community such as furniture building and forging metal working metal. Trade and bartering was a way of life. The community would come together for a gathering to share agricultural information, recipes, news of events, enjoy food, dancing and celebrating together. This gathering became an annual tradition, which we know today as the “County Fair.”

2017-2018 Kendall County Fair Queen’s Court

16

B oerne B usiness M onthly | August 2018

In 1905, the Kendall County Fair Association was officially formed and H.O Adler named the first president. Eight years later in 1913, the Ferdinand Ludwig Von Herff family deeded 55.6 acres of land to the association for the purpose of continuing this tradition for many years to come. Imagine…you and your numerous ancestors have enjoyed this annual event on the same ground for the last century! Times have certainly changed, but the excitement you feel on your way to the fair stays the same! You walk in the gate, see all the farm animals, baked goods and canning, plants and very detailed handwork. You remember the bucking bulls, pony rides, carnival, oh and don’t forget the candied apples and funnel cakes! All these things are still the tradition today. Now’s the time that the Kendall County Fair Association begins looking to the community for involvement for the 2018 Fair & Rodeo. There are so many ways to support this century old tradition. Attend the Queen’s Court Pageant to watch the crowning of the 2018-2019 Court. Enter an exhibit in the Exhibit Hall. Sign up as a float in the parade or to have a food or sales vendor booth. Bring your show animal to compete in the Livestock Show. Bring your rope or your horse and compete in the Rodeo. Volunteer to work the gate, ticket booth, or serve concessions. Take a ride on the Ferris Wheel. Shop the Mercantile. Become a sponsor to help support the event. Put on your dancing shoes and come dance the night away to some fabulous headliners! Saturday, August 25th, starts the fair events with the Kendall County Roping. It’s open to the public and free to spectators. The top 5 winners from each category will rope on Friday or Saturday night during the Lester Meyer Rodeo. Thursday, August 30th at 6:30pm is the Queens

Current Kendall County Fair Association Directors

Court Scholarship Pageant. These young ladies spend all day going through interviews, giving speeches, answering questions and taking pictures to compete for the next 2018-2019 Court. The 2017-2018 court, Queen Hannah Culak, Princess Kassidy Langlinais, Junior Miss Addie Martin and Little Miss Lillie Vogt will crown their successor. The new court will spend the next year traveling around the Texas hill country to new places, meeting new people, and making bonds that will last a lifetime. It’s an exciting evening, open to the public and no cost for entry. A new tradition is starting on Friday, August 31st at 9am! KC’s Kids is a special event where the Kendall County Fair Association hosts many special needs children from the area to enjoy a Fair tailored for them. KC Cowboy became the KCFA mascot last year. The directors and volunteers will come together as they host these special guests. Groundbreaking for new Visitor Center located along the Hill Country Mile

The City of Boerne broke ground recently for a new Boerne Visitor Center being built on the Hill Country Mile. “Our Convention and Visitors Bureau team needs to be close to the action so they can be more actively engaged with the thousands of visitors that come here to enjoy the “Boerne gem” that is our historic downtown,” said Boerne Mayor Mike Schultz. “The City recognized this need years ago but the timing just wasn’t right. Now it is and in early 2019 we will open the new 2,800 square foot Visitor Center at the corner of North Main and Lohmann Streets,” Schultz added.

A couple of years ago the city received a TXDOT grant for a beautification project on Main Street. Keep Boerne Beautiful and the city, with terrific help from Judy Edmonson, worked together to get a $160,000 grant to be used for landscaping, sidewalk improvements, seating and other features designed to complement the new visitors center. A big part of this overall project also includes parking lot improvements to create eighty plus public parking spaces. Construction on the visitor center should be complete in February of 2019 with the parking lot and landscape improvement complete in April.BBM

Energy Conservation

We broke ground recently for our new Boerne Visitor Center being built on the Hill Country Mile. Our Convention and Visitors Bureau team needs to be close to the action so they can be more actively engaged with the thousands of visitors that come here to enjoy the “Boerne gem” that is our historic downtown. The City recognized this need years ago but the timing just wasn’t right. Now it is and in early 2019 we will open the new 2,800 square foot Visitor Center at the corner of North Main and Lohmann Streets. A couple of years ago we also received a TXDOT grant for a beautification project on Main Street. Keep Boerne Beautiful and the city, with terrific help from Judy Edmonson, worked together to get this $160,000 grant, and it will be used for landscaping, sidewalk improvements, seating and other features designed to complement the new visitors center. A big part of this overall project includes parking lot improvements to create eighty plus public parking spaces. You have likely seen the construction fencing around the Lohmann Street parking lot. So please let your friends, family, and neighbors know that they will need to find other locations to park over the next six months. Most people probably don’t realize that we have over 2,000 other parking spaces available throughout the Hill Country Mile area. At a recent city council meeting we authorized an increase in our surface water take from Canyon Lake to help keep up with the demand on Boerne’s growing water utility. This action to secure more surface water helps all of our county neighbors who rely on ground water. While the city has wells also, we are shifting away from reliance on one of our main wells. Hopefully you are aware that we are in Stage 1 of our mandatory water restrictions for Boerne Utilities water customers. Landscape watering with sprinkler or irrigation systems is allowed only on one week day and one weekend day, between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. Using a hand-held hose or bucket is allowed anytime. Please

24

B oerne B usiness M onthly | August 2018

check the city’s website for updates. Our customers in the Esperanza and Ranches of Creekside neighborhoods have recycled water from the city’s Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Center for their irrigation water. For these customers outdoor watering is allowed any day, but only between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 a.m. We learned a few weeks ago that the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) hit another electric energy usage record. For those who are not familiar, this is the state agency that monitors and manages the electric grid for all of Texas. It is like the “mother ship” that oversees all of the electricity distribution and usage. They along with almost every electric service provider are proactively reminding people to conserve energy as much as possible during these hot summer days. We all know there are helpful ways to save on our electric bill so now is the time to get serious and implement them during the hottest times of the day. Don’t run major appliances; close drapes and blinds; use ceiling fans; and seal up any door or window leaks. As we wrap up the city’s Master Plan Update we want folks to know that we have reviewed the comments people have made, especially related to the Kendall Gateway Study. We have directed the consultant to remove all references to the Kendall Gateway Study from the Master Plan Update. If and when the Kendall Gateway Study is accepted by the Kendall County Commissioners Court and the Boerne City Council it would then be appropriate to include that information during an update to the 2018 Master Plan. wellbeing

A

Are you gaining weight and not able to lose it? Are you suffering from frequent headaches or back and joint pain? Are you constantly battling with constipation, bloating, or gas? If the answer is YES, then the time has come for a detox. Detoxification may sound like a scary word, like a word that is better left stuffed behind the couch or pushed to the very furthest back burner. But, the benefits of a healthy detox could be exactly what you need to get your life back on track, to get back to being the regular, happy, normal you. WHAT IS DETOXIFICATION? This process is something that our bodies do every day. It is a normal elimination of toxins through the colon, liver, kidneys, lungs, lymph, and skin. In the liver, the main location of detoxification occurs in two phases. Phase 1 alters toxins, through different processes, to prepare them for phase II, which is elimination from the body, via urine, bile, or stool. Today, we are exposed to chemicals of all kinds: pollutant run-offs in the water, pesticides, additives in food, heavy metals, anesthetics, metabolites from drugs, and environmental hormones. More than 2 million synthetic substances are known, 25,000 are added each year, and over 30,000 are produced on a commercial scale. The constant exposure to toxins can cause them to saturate the tissues, deplete antioxidants and minerals, and put stress on the immune system, which can lead to diseases and symptoms such as chronic fatigue, respiratory and asthma issues, poor memory, insomnia, depression, and irritability. WHO SHOULD DETOX? EVERYONE. HOW TO DETOX? A successful detox can be accomplished in three easy steps: 1. Elimination: This step will clean out unwanted pollutants and toxins from the intestinal tract and major

organs. Certain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are needed to allow the detoxification elimination processes to occur. Phase 1 requires vitamins B2, B3, B6, B12, folic acid, glutathione, and flavonoids (from fruits and vegetables). Phase II requires methionine, cysteine, magnesium, glutathione, glycine, taurine, glutamine, folic acid, choline, and vitamins C, B5, and B12. 2. Rebuilding healthy tissue and restoring energy: This step is important because once the toxins are removed, the body needs nutrients to rebuild, re-regulate, and remain healthy. Eating fresh, local produce, drinking lots of water, and continuing to supplement with multivitamins and other minerals and antioxidants that your body needs to support complete healing. 3. Maintenance: Lifestyle modifications are key to keeping your body resistant, and whole. A healthy diet can sustain a healthy gut. Vitamins and antioxidants can provide the nutrients needed for the continuous detoxification in the liver, and other organs and also allow the immune system to continue keeping us alive and well. Detoxification is a process and it does take effort. It does take commitment. But you can expect to have a significant improvement in the way you feel. This process my help clean your digestive tract to dissipate the constipation, the bloating, and the gas; may help clear excess mucous to help with respiratory and asthma issues; may enhance mental clarity; and may help you regain energy. If you are ready to take the leap into better health, Annie’s has all the tools you will need. We offer a great support system, in addition to all the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that you will need to have a successful detox. MAKING CUSTOMER SERVICE AN ART FORM AT FUNERAL HOME

T

The newly renamed Holt & Holt Funeral Home, formerly Vaughan's Funeral Home, was purchased by Mary and William Holt in 2017. Holt & Holt can be found at the same great location with new and improved facilities and owners that focus on unparalleled caring and compassionate customer service catering to families in the Boerne area. Holt & Holt is a husband and wife team, passionate about helping families achieve peace following the loss of a loved one. Their core values focus on maturity, compassion, dignity, respect and exemplary personalized service. The Holts’ aim is to be of genuine and empathetic assistance to every bereaved family they help. William Holt, the new Funeral Director, has finally found his true calling. His passion for customer service and his need to contribute to the community brought him to open Holt & Holt Funeral Home, along with his wife Mary and their son Jason. It is a real family affair offering compassion and caring to all the families seeking to lay their loved ones to rest. With the new and improved facilities and relationships, Mr. and Mrs. Holt felt a new name would reflect their vision and goals for this long-time Boerne business.

William started his funeral home management career in Yoakum and was managing five homes in that area before being transferred to manage funeral homes in the Taylor, Texas area. Finding that he preferred smaller funeral homes, he began working in Hamburg, Arkansas, and then moved to Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Midland, Texas, before taking over in Boerne and establishing Holt & Holt. Finding Boerne settled his restless heart; he found the right fit between his management skills, his commitment to excellent customer service and his compassion to help people with the loss of their loved ones. Mary, the second part of the dynamic funeral home customer service duo, is the heart of Holt & Holt and a technical support expert. She will be utilizing her skills in computer programing, project management and accounting to make Holt & Holt a stable, organized family oriented funeral home. Mary was raised in Louisiana, but her Texas roots trace back to the 1840’s when her mother’s family emigrated from Germany to the Hill Country. Her forebears established themselves as store owners and land owners in the Hill Country and Gonzales county. As a child, she spent most summers in the Hill Country, and is glad to be back; it's one of her favorite places to be. The combination of William's extensive management experience and Mary’s technical expertise make them well-suited to running a funeral home and modernizing its operations. Applying their project management principles to every service, will allow for the newly improved Holt & Holt Funeral Home to focus their attentions on the families and their needs. Holt & Holt Funeral Home offers a wide variety of services. Visit their website at www. holtfh.com to make arrangements, or by calling for personalized service at (830) 249-9128. Mr. Holt will assist by offering suggestions and expediting funeral arrangements, transportation, selection of flowers, and all other needs the grieving family members may require. Holt & Holt Funeral Home supports families’ needs during their challenging time. Their phones are personally answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Holt & Holt Funeral Home is there when families need them the most. Their philosophy is: Our Family Serving Your Family. Holt & Holt Funeral Home is located at 319 E.
