O
Is Diversification Dead? by Karl Eggerss
Over the course of history, diversification has been the backbone of investing. Even our grandparents told us not to put all our eggs in one basket. In the past few years, some investors have abandoned diversification and opted for owning the most popular stocks because of their recent returns. But, there are dangers in doing that. In October and November, those popular stocks began to weaken and those that sstuck tuck with a diversified portfolio have begun to see the benefits. It’s true that some of the wealthiest Americans didn’t diverssify ify to gain their wealth. Most took enormous risk by putting every penny into their own companies only to become multi-millionaires or even billionaires. Steve Jobs & Bill Gates are two that come to mind quickly. But, for most, diversifying enables one to accumulate wealth over their lifetime and more importantly, stay wealthy. Most of the horror stories of those that have permanently lost a tremendous amount of wealth are due to the lack of diversification. I’ve met numerous people over the years that said they had too much money in technology stocks during the dotcom bubble. How about those that went heavy into real estate right before the financial crisis of 2008? Or those that went heavily into a concentrated position in Enron. Most recently, we’ve read stories of people borrowing money and putting everything into cryptocurrencies only to watch them fall 90%. While not diversifying can pay off in some cases, it doesn’t make sense for most of us. A balanced portfolio, just like a balanced diet, should incorporate different investments (food) that have different characteristics and will benefit us at different times. Owning some stocks (both domestic and internationally), some bonds (both domestic and internationally), real estate, commodities, and short-term instruments like CDs or money markets is prudent. Of course, there are several other investments one can diversify into, but these are the general buckets in which one might put their money. However, in the past few years, investors simply owning large American stocks have been rewarded the most. Whether it’s technology stocks like Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google (FAANG) or just the S&P 5001, owning less has made more. This has been going on for some time, mainly the last
5 years. That’s a long time in the life of an investor. Humans lose patience and therefore begin to abandon the investments that aren’t working. An example of assets that have been good diversifiers over the long-term but not necessarily the past 5 years are commodities and international stocks. If this sounds familiar, it should. In the years just prior to 2000, technology stocks and other popular stocks were trading a ridiculous valuations and investors continued to pour into them on the fear of missing out (FOMO) while abandoning other asset classes. Then, the popular overpriced stocks began to fall and caused a severe bear market. But, not ALL assets went down during the bust of the dot com bubble. While large cap stocks fell 37.5% from 20002002, the JP Morgan asset allocation strategy1 (a proxy for a welldiversified portfolio) only fell 9.6% with many assets actually going up during that time. In other words, diversification worked. In 2008, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, large cap stocks fell 37%, while the same diversified portfolio fell 25%. However, the diversified portfolio gained 25% the following year. And, when the next bear market occurs, we believe diversification will work again. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. It’s no different in investing. It’s called momentum. Owning select technology stocks the past few years has been a great investment. But, the tide has begun to turn the past two months. Many of those popular stocks that were fundamentally overvalued have fallen over 30%. On the other hand, some of the assets that investors have abandoned are beginning to work once again. And, due to the gains of those popular stocks, most investors are over weighted towards U.S. growth and underweight areas like commodities and international stocks. If investors do nothing else, they should re-balance now. Investors need to force themselves to do
“Diversify. In stocks and bonds, as in much else, there is safety in numbers.” -Sir John Templeton

“But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead” -Ecclesiastes 11:2 NLT the hard thing. Regarding the U.S.’s outperformance of international stocks, many are taking notice. GMO, a $70 billion global asset manager recently published their out-look for stocks over the next 7 years. They project a negative return for U.S. stocks while a positive return for emerging market stocks. In fact, they predict emerging market stocks to outperform U.S. stocks by 6.2% per year over the next 7 years! Just a few weeks ago, JP Morgan said they anticipate international stocks to begin outperforming very soon. In fact, they stated “The firm's quantitative and derivative strategist Marko Kolanovic says the big "divergence" between U.S. stocks and international equities over the past year is unprecedented.” Let us be clear. Foreign countries have had real issues that have affected their societies, their economies, and their stocks. But, it’s always about what’s already priced into the stocks. The reason these stocks are more volatile and have fallen is because of that bad news. But, it’s not just international stocks vs. U.S. stocks. Many things have underperformed the U.S. stock market the past several years. Ray Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, one of the world’s largest hedge funds and one of the wealthiest individuals in the world has increased his holdings in gold. Many think he’s crazy, but he likes to buy what he deems to be a good deal. Some successful money managers/strategists have begun to look at areas where the next big move could come from and have their portfolios diversified as such. While concentrating portfolios in the “right place” can work in the short-term, it makes investing more emotional and can lead to at worst, life altering financial mistakes. Diversifying still works.BBM

T
by Lauren Stumberg photos by Ron Pritchett
The HO Adler building, most recently home to Bergman Lumber Company, has been transformed into the Tusculum Brewing Company! “Big plans are in store for this grand historical space,” says Tommy Mathews, one of the partners bbehind ehind this future local hot spot. According to Mathews, “We have a great vision for the sspace pace that includes a brewhouse, beer garden, tap room and a restaurant in the first phases. Eventually, we plan to open a bed and breakfast upstairs that will also include a European tea room, downstairs in the basement there will be a speakeasy.
16
B OERNE B USINESS M ONTHLY | December 2018
There is a lot of space here and we plan to utilize all of it in really cool ways!” “One more exciting element we have in the works is that we have been working with a nonprofit to put in a woodworking shop for the Wounded Warriors. We will help to sell the furniture that they build. We plan to use that furniture throughout Tusculum as well. This is something that we are really excited about,” added Mathews. “This is a long-term project with a lot of different parts,” said Linda Lee Gatell, Tusculum’s General Manager, “We have begun operating the interior of the building as a venue space and will be renting it out for private events from now until sometime in the spring when we will hopefully have everything in place to open the restaurant.” THE BUILDING Much work has gone into revitalizing the HO Adler building, which was built in 1908. When remodeling the building, the team made sure to reuse and repurpose as much of the old building as possible. According to Tommy, “We restored the ceilings and kept the actual counters from Bergmann Lumber Company, we put in some barn doors that were made from scraps left from the lumber yard. It was really important to us to maintain the integrity of the building while also beautifying it and giving it new life.”
WHY TUSCULUM?
In 1849, a group of German colonists from Bettina camped on the north side of Cibolo Creek, about a mile west of present-day Boerne. They called their new community Tusculum, after Cicero's home in ancient Rome. In 1852, Gustav Theissen and John James laid out the town's site and changed the name to Boerne in honor of Ludwig Börne, a German poet and publicist.
THE RESTAURANT Expect large portions of American cuisine when Tusculum Brewing Company opens the doors to their most anticipated restaurant. Frederick Smith, Owner and Operator of two successful restaurants in San Antonio is Tusculum’s Corporate Chef. Mariah Griffin is the Assistant General Manager. The restaurant will include a tap wall featuring Tusculum Brewing Company’s craft beers and fine wines. THE BREWING COMPANY When it comes to the brew, Tripper Mathews is the man in charge. “All of the partners of Tusculum Brewing Company are home brewers. We are all part of the Boerne Brewers Guild and all share a love of great craft beer.” said Tripper. The partners of Tusculum Brewing Company, include Curt Campbell, Paige Mathews, Tripper Mathews, Tommy Mathews, Gary Nicholls, Jack Sackrider and Brandon Wilcox. Tripper started brewing about eight years ago and his hobby soon became a passion. He has volunteered at many breweries around the hill country, has brewed for his friends for years and even brewed beer for his own wedding! His vision for the beer offered at Tusculum is to have 12-18 beers offered at all times, four to six will be mainstay beers and the others will rotate in and out. “Craft beers are our passion, and we cannot wait to share our amazing beer with the community,” said Tripper. The beer garden and production facility will be located at the back of the property, behind the main building. This area extends to the City’s Cibolo Trail and can seat up to 100+ people and also includes a stage and entertainment area. “We have some really cool, creative, artsy things planned for this space,” said Tommy Mathews. “I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag, but trust me…it’ll be cool!” “Our goal with this project is to create a space that will become the “go to” community place. We want it to be somewhere that people can come to have a great experience and create fun memories,” said Tommy. “If we can accomplish that, then our vision for this space has been successful.”BBM

FUN FACT:
Cicerones are the beer world’s answer to sommeliers. They help choose and purchase beer, oversee beer storage, educate staff, provide brewery tours, and help make beer recommendations. Basically cicerones know everything there is to know about beer. ‘Twas The Night Before An Audit by Anette Barrera, CPA – ADKF
'Twas the night before the audit, when all through Accounting, the staff was working hard as the audit preparation was daunting. The statements were almost ready and prepared with great care, in hopes that the auditors soon would be there. The start of 2019 is right around the corner, which means it’s time for businesses and accountants to prepare for their year-end close and perhaps a financial statement audit. If you’re wondering if your organization needs to undergo an audit, it all depends on the requirements of your internal and/or external stakeholders. Unless your industry requires one (i.e., larger financial institutions, publicly-traded companies, non-profit organizations with over $750,000 expended in federal funds), financial audits are not mandatory. However, there are situations where you may need one. If you’re applying for financing through a creditor or investor, these parties may require the additional assurance that an audit provides. Likewise, many not-for-profit organizations require an audit to successfully fundraise. As noted, not all companies require financial audits. But those that do are left with the overwhelming task of planning and preparing for the requests of the external auditors. It is essential that the audit process be smooth and efficient to ensure timely completion of your goals and deliverables within the expected time frame. Below is a list of five tips to help you in preparing for your year-end audit: 1) PLANNING AND COORDINATING YOUR AUDIT DATES Set a reasonable expectation for your year-end close. Knowing the audit start dates well ahead of time allows both your accounting team, and your audit firm’s team, to have a clear and realistic expectation of the audit process so the completion date is met. Coordinate available dates and communicate any potential problems with your auditor to ensure that both teams are prepared for the audit process and its deadlines. It is imperative that your key accounting staff be available while the auditor is carrying out fieldwork. This includes flexibility and availability of staff to assist in answering questions and providing additional supporting documentation requested by the auditor. 2) PERFORM TIMELY RECONCILIATIONS It is crucial that account reconciliations be performed throughout the year. Account reconciliations should be completed on a monthly basis to ensure that errors are identified and investigated in a timely manner. If you wait until the year-end close process, you may not have enough time to resolve any reconciling issues prior to the audit, which may make it more time consuming for both the accounting and audit team and delay the completion of the audit.
18
B OERNE B USINESS M ONTHLY | December 2018
3) ADDRESS UNUSUAL/NON-RECURRING TRANSACTIONS DURING THE YEAR If your company undergoes any non-routine transactions that are unusual (i.e., mergers & acquisitions, disposal of a component of a business, special equity transactions) and which your auditor is likely to question, don’t wait until the audit to address it. Give your auditor a call during the year and provide them with the information they need to make sure it has received the correct accounting treatment the first time around. 4) DOCUMENTATION AND RETENTION IS KEY Auditors sample a variety of transactions throughout the audit such as cash disbursements, cash receipts, and asset purchases, to name a few. Ensuring that adequate and proper documentation is retained for all transactions during the year will allow you to more quickly provide supporting documentation for selections requested by the auditor and will avoid unnecessary time spent searching your records. Consider creating subfolders for significant accounting areas to easily access requested information or schedules. You can also ask your auditor for a prepared-by-client (PBC) listing in advance of the audit to know the documentation that you will be required to support. 5) STAY UP-TO-DATE ON ACCOUNTING STANDARDS It is very important for your business to keep up-to-date with any recently issued accounting standards to ensure reporting compliance. Contact your auditor routinely throughout the year to remain informed of any changes affecting financial reporting. New accounting standards may require managing or tracking financial information in a different manner and your accounting staff may need additional training to implement new requirements. As rigorous of a task it may be to prepare for an audit, the audit process can offer exceptional value to a business. Companies may learn more about their financial health as well as receive recommendations to improve key internal controls. If you’ve implemented some of the tips listed above, your audit should be a smooth process.

End-of-the-Year
I
by Matt Nelson – Prime Capital Investment Advisors
It is that most wonderful time of the year. The holidays are approaching and hopefully we will all get the chance to spend quality time with our families and close friends. It is also a really good time to step back and look at your financial picture as you plan for 2019. We’re making it a point to have these important discussions with our clients right now. Here are three important tips everyone should consider for end-of-theyear financial planning. LOCK-IN LOSSES. The recent market volatility has all but ensured that many of us will have some losses for the year. While that may be painful as you review your portfolio, there may be some relief in taking those losses as you prepare your income taxes. You may be able to turn those losses into tax advantages by locking them in now. BE PREPARED. There are many new changes to the tax laws. If you own a small business, you absolutely should have a discussion with your tax professional. The fact is that pretty much everyone should discuss their own tax situation with their advisor; there are many tax advantage vehicles available to ensure you maximize your particular situation. THE GIVING SEASON. Outline your charitable giving plan for the end of the year and continuing on into 2019. If you are considering a financial gift, the annual
Planning gift tax exclusion allows you to give up to $15,000 to an individual ($30,000 to a couple) without the gift tax kicking in. If someone in your family will be heading to college in the next few years, this is a great time to load up a 529 account in their name. The earlier in that child’s life, the better. The funds will have a chance to grow toward being able to meet what is expected to be a significantly higher cost in the years to come. There are lots of great charities in the Boerne area that need our help. Prime Capital Investment Advisors is presenting a series of educational programs that will help our clients understand how to leverage their charitable giving. Those sessions will start in January. If you are interested, talk to a PCIA advisor to learn more. Everyone’s financial situation is different. You should be sure to discuss your individual needs with a professional who has your best interests in mind. And have a fantastic, and well-planned, end of 2018. BBM Matt has been in the financial services industry for over two decades. Due to Matt’s tenure, he has wealth of experience assisting high-net-worth individuals work through a multitude of financial challenges to develop a holistic approach to wealth management and asset protection. He also works with many large corporations throughout the Midwest and Southwest handling their retirement plans. Specifically, he consults with plan sponsors regarding fiduciary protection, vendor search and selection as well as face-to-face participant education. Matt’s approach to these services begins with a strong relationship with his clients by understanding their needs, listening to concerns, then coordinating with tax and legal experts to develop a holistic plan. Building a Thanksgiving Tradition
THE GVTC FOUNDATION’S YEARLY THANKSGIVING PROJECT AND HOW IT’S GROWN
Since its inception in 2006, The GVTC Foundation, GVTC’s employee-driven philanthropic arm, has centered its mission around serving its local community—just like its parent company. And nothing speaks more to being local than supporting your ssurrounding urrounding areas when it counts most. For the past six years, The GVTC Foundation F oundation has dedicated its biggest philanthropic project to ensuring as many Hill Country homes as possible enjoy a joyful Thanksgiving by providing needed meals for the holiday. This year, The GVTC Foundation partnered with 8 food pantries and 15 community organizations to make this possible. The food pantries include: Blanco Good Samaritan, Hill Country Family Services, CRRC, Habitat for Safe Seniors, Gonzales Christian Assistance Ministries, Hope Center, Provisions, and Helping Hands. The community organizations include: Boerne Champion High School Choir,
Boerne YMCA, Boerne Community Theatre, Lowe’s Market, Gonzales High School Career Prep & FCCLA, Smithson Valley High FACS, Canyon Lake High Student Council, O’Connor High School Students, Daises, Tejas Teens, Bulverde 4H, Steps and Faith Alive, Sonora Bank, and Brookshire Brothers. Donations from organizations like Brookshire Brothers Inc., a new addition to the project who donated 50 full meals to the project, helped The GVTC Foundation exceed its original goal and feed 277 families in total for 2018! Over the course of six years, The GVTC Foundation has fed 899 families through the Thanksgiving Giveback Project. Debra Suarez, a first-time GVTC employee volunteer for the Thanksgiving Giveback Project, expressed her immense joy on Saturday when saying, "You not only become very grateful for what you have, but you also become hopeful for what is pos-
sible when your community comes together. I'm looking forward to next year!"
