Outdoor Amphitheater at Herff Farm Thanks to Major Gift from Philanthropist Susan Naylor

Construction of a new outdoor amphitheater at the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm’s (CNC&F) new Learning Village at the Herff Farm campus (33 Herff Road, Boerne) has begun. Thanks to a generous gift by Susan Naylor and the Will Smith Foundation, the new feature will be named The Will Smith Amphitheater in memory of her late son, Will, who died in a tragic car accident at the age of eight in 2007. According to Naylor, “Will's generosity and love of life inspired the creation of The Will Smith Foundation to continue his benevolence. Even though Will is not physically with us any more, his kind and giving spirit will continue to fill the hearts and enrich the lives of many.” Naylor’s gift to the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm is just one of the many philanthropic efforts she has put into place in memory of her two sons, Will and Charlie. “I fell in love with the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm immediately, and it fit where my boys’ hearts were, so it was really important for me to find a way to be involved,” said Naylor about supporting the campaign and amphitheater project. The Will Smith Amphitheater will be a part of the Cibolo Nature School & Learning Village that will also include: • Four classroom cottages with screened-in porch “mud rooms” for the expanded Nature School • Welcome Center with offices and teacher enrichment space • Community Auditorium • Restored Historic Barn • Event Lawn • Hidden Forest Play Area

There is something a bit nostalgic about a pair of Cowboy Pajamas. Maybe they bring back fun childhood memories or perhaps just make you feel like you are part of the Wild West. Whatever it may be, you can’t deny there is something special about the Original Cowboy Pajamas. “Customers are not just locals, they are international as well,” said Lynnette Furr, owner of Cowboy Pajamas. “There is a demand for them, especially from Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Australia.” Furr is constantly taking online orders and shipping them overseas. “I work from my home and the pajamas are not available at a retail location, so you will often find me meeting

Pajamas to Bring Out the Cowboy in Us All foreign tourists who call and just have to have a pair or two of these Cowboy Pajamas to take back home with them!” In addition to tourists, these high-quality pajamas make for great presents. According to Furr, “We sell to people that want to give them as gifts to their family and friends. Recently we had a bride that gifted all of her bridesmaids a set of Cowboy Pajamas for being in her wedding. The picture of all of them together in the pajamas has gone viral on social media and now this is a fun new wedding trend!” Furr credits social media for being very instrumental in the level of popularity of Cowboy Pajamas. One look at a pair of these Cowboy Pajamas and it is easy to

see why they are so popular. They are beautifully sewn and include fine details such as custom buttons and soft, suede-like logo patches. “Our prints are exclusive. These vintage western fabrics are very hard to come by which makes our pajamas unique. We even sell the fabric by the yard or bolt for people that might want to make things like window coverings, shower curtains and quilts and blankets,” said Lynnette. Furr, whose ancestors were among some of the first to settle in the Kendall County area, bought the Original Cowboy Pajamas business from another local Boerne couple, Dean and Susan, in March of 2011. Since that time, Lynnette has grown the business by expanding the line and offering a greater selection of merchandise. According to Lynnette, “When I purchased the business it only offered the original pants and the logo t-shirts. The first item I added was the Matching Set, there were a lot of requests to have a shirt that matched the pants so I came up with the pattern for that and we began producing those which are one of our biggest sellers. After that we added the Cow Kids wear,

which are equally as popular! Then came the Boxer Shorts and eventually we began selling the women’s Low Rise Pants and ladies Nightshirts. We also added the extended sizing. Our pajamas now range in size from 6 months of age all the way to a 3XL.” Furr is very proud of the fact that all of the pajamas are made right here in Texas. In fact, the majority of the line is sewn in downtown San Antonio and Lynnette sews the ladies Low Rise Pants and the Cow Kids wear herself at her home here in Boerne. “Sewing is in my blood. My great great great grandfather on mother’s side of the family that immigrated to Boerne was a professional tailor in Germany. My great grandmother specialized in custom sewing for plus sized women, who had a hard time finding clothing in their size at that time. My mother made all of our clothes when we were kids too. Our dresses, nylon slips, school clothes and even bathing suits!” Furr received her first sewing machine from her mother when

she was about 8 years old. “I have been happily sewing ever since,” she said with a smile. Lynnette also gets a helping hand from her family as well. Both of her sisters, Donna and Karyl, help her sew and her children, Sterling and Suade, assist her in the office during the holiday season when business is at its peak! Families all wearing Cowboy Pajamas make for great Christmas photos! The pajamas come in a variety of different fabrics to fit every p e r s o n a l i t y. With fun themes and an array of colors its hard to choose just one! The newest fabric choice is the Roping Ranch Chambray, but there are plenty of others to choose from such as the Red Vintage Cowgirl, Better on the Farm, Home on the Range and Ropin’ n Ridin’ Black just to name a few. Cowboy Pajamas also made their Hollywood Debut on November 14, 2014 when Jim Carrey wore the Matching Pajama Set in the “Home on the Range” print during the first continued on page 18

Texas home sales growth robust amid strong economic activity

A

According to the National Association of Realtors' latest report, housing sales through Multiple Listing Services rebounded across the nation in October, rising 4.6 percent year over year. Texas doubled that growth amid robust economic activity. Researchers from the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University said last year's combination of rising interest rates and falling oil prices stalled the housing market, setting the stage for the positive reading. Despite these base-year effects, the current trend points steadily upward. Texas sales surpassed a monthly high after accounting for seasonal factors and are projected to close the year up around 3.2 percent annually, while national sales look to be slightly below 2018 levels. Lower mortgage rates may encourage buyer activity into the holidays. Nationally, exsiting-home sales rose 1.9 percent over the month in October. The median existing-home price for all housing types was $270,900. Existing-home sales in the South (the region that includes Texas) increased 4.4 percent to an annual rate of 2.35 million in October, up 7.8 percent from a year ago. The median price in the South was $234,900, a 6 percent yearly increase.BBM Courtesy of Real Estate Center Online News & National Association of Realtors

The GVTC Foundation’s Thanksgiving Giveback Project Delivers 314 Meals this Year Over the span of 7 years, this project has helped benefit 1,213 families Recognizing need in our own backyard

Once again, the holidays have snuck up on us faster than anticipated, and while some of us are excited to put salads and swimsuits behind us to make room for pie, many families in our Texas Hill Country community are impacted by the ever-rising cost of food this

holiday season. Food insecurity in our backyard is growing but, thankfully, so is the generosity of community members who combat it. For 7 years, The GVTC Foundation, GVTC’s employee-driven philanthropic arm, has dedicated its time each fall to partner with local nonprofits and youth organizations to bridge the local food gap. They host an annual Thanksgiving Giveback Project where they supply Thanksgiving meals including a full frozen turkey and all the traditional fixings to those in need throughout GVTC’s service area. It’s an all-hands-on-deck community effort that blows us away each year. Local nonprofits we partner with This project wouldn’t be possible without the i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e support received from GVTC employee volunteers, local groups, and donors alike. First, The GVTC Foundation partners with local food pantries who supply the family names of those to deliver to. Then, they work with local organizations including school groups, churches, and businesses from September to November to raise food items and monetary donations needed for each Thanksgiving meal. And last, GVTC employee volunteers and their families personally pack and deliver all meals to needing families. This year, they partnered with 10 food pantries and 23 local organizations for this Thanksgiving Giveback Project, all of whom broke records with their fundraising pledges. Local Food Pantries included: Hope Center Habitat for Safe Seniors Helping Hands CRRC of Canyon Lake Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries Provisions Outreach of Bulverde Meals on Wheels (Bulverde Spring Brand Food Pantry) Blanco Good Samaritan Center Gonzales Christian Assistance Ministries Hill Country Family Services Local Organizations included: Betrayed Motorcycle Club Blanco High School Honor Society Boerne Champion Choir Boerne Community Theatre Boerne Rotary Boerne Wild Game Dinner Boerne YMCA Brookshire Brothers Bulverde 4 H Canyon Lake High School Student Council Fabra Elementary Student Council (Boerne)

youth

D

Don’t miss the chance to support the youth of Kendall County in a big way! This year’s Kendall County Junior Livestock Show begins on Sunday January 5th with the Poultry and Ag Mechanics Show. The Market Lamb, Goat, Steer and Hog Show is on Friday, January 10th. The Sale will take place on January 11th. Created in 1939, the Kendall County Junior Livestock Association has focused on promoting youth involvement with agriculture, all the while helping to further their education. According to President of the KCJLA Board, Chad Upham, “the core values of this association are to give kids the opportunity to be involved and exposed to agriculture. It is something they can do together with their family, while giving them an opportunity to further their education.” One of the many ways that KCJLA supports the youth of Kendall County is to host the annual Kendall County Jr. Livestock Show and Sale. “The proceeds from the sale go directly to the kids. That is our primary way of giving back to these kids and back to the community,” Upham said. The Livestock Show and Sale allows the youth of Kendall

County who have spent time and effort caring for an animal project to have the opportunity to show and the sell that animal. “It is our hope that they use the money they get from the sale to continue their projects and save for college, vocational school or whatever higher education they pursue after high school,” Upham said. “I love the stock show, because we get to see the kids participate, and the sale because we get to see the community as a whole come together to support these kids in one day.” Last year, the Livestock Show and Sale was able to raise over 1.4 million dollars for our local youth. This contribution to the youth is due to the thousands of community members and businesses supporting the sale and cheering on the young participants. Upham remarked on this, “It is truly amazing to watch the families and business community of Kendall County come together on one day and do that.” BBM

The GVTC Foundation Donates $30K to Local Philanthropist

Each year, The GVTC Foundation is blown away by how active and supportive those in GVTC’s service area are. Due to its local roots, The Foundation has a unique opportunity to help foster even more involvement in community outreach programs through charitable contributions. This year, one very special young philanthropist, Hunter Beaton, applied for and was awarded a scholarship for his academic achievements, extensive volunteer work, and passion for kids. A recent graduate from Boerne High School, Hunter was awarded The GVTC Foundation’s $20,000 Ola Armstrong Scholarship. He now attends The University of Texas at Austin where he plans to major in Public Policy in order to transition into public administration and become a positive force in community policy change. Hunter earned the scholarship for his impressive academics and involvement with foster children. After years of his family fostering numerous children, Hunter saw a need in the foster care system and decided to create his very own nonprofit, Day 1 Bags, to provide backpacks to children on their first day at a new foster home. Day 1 Bags quickly grew to support foster children across the U.S. and today provides thousands of backpacks filled with necessities as kids adjust to their new surroundings. Hunter found that the backpacks not only helped kids protect their belongings, but they also filled kids with confidence and a sense of personal ownership. As Hunter went off to UT, he continued to put his whole heart into Day 1 Bags as the need for backpacks grew. Hunter applied for a GVTC Foundation grant, and due to the nonprofits’ meaningful and impactful work here locally, The Foundation awarded him $10,000 to help support Day 1 Bags’ work. The GVTC Foundation is proud to support efforts in the community like Hunter Beaton’s. If you are interested in learning more about The GVTC Foundation and their grant process, visit https://gvtc.com/gvtc-foundation/grants.

We all know the importance of keeping your body and mind balanced. However, did you know that by applying the principles of Ayurveda you can help to keep your body nourished as well? Ayurveda offers a logical approach for determining a correct diet based upon an individual's constitution. So, if you seek harmony, peace, and longevity, Ayurvedic principles can help you achieve those goals. The practice of Ayurveda is designed to promote happiness, health, and productive growth. Ayurveda actually means the science of life, or more accurately, it translates from Sanskrit to "life knowing." By applying some of the basic tenants of this 5,000-year-old healing system, you can achieve good health and longevity. To understand what to eat, you first have to determine your constitution. In Ayurveda, your dosha describes your body's composition. The doshas are biological energies found throughout the body and mind. They govern all physical and mental processes and provide your blueprint for health and fulfillment. As one creates a doshic balance through dietary changes, the development of health will follow. Understanding your individual nature will help guide you toward what to eat. There are three main doshas, and then there seven possible combinations. Numerous questionnaires can be found online to help you identify your correct dosha. I like the dosha test at www. banyontreebotanticals.com. Also, know that while one dosha may be a bit more prominent, many people can be dual doshic, and some are even tridoshic. As a general rule to attain balance, you should pay the most attention to your primary dosha. For example, a person with Vata predominant in their constitution is blessed with a quick mind, flexibility, and creative resources. Vata is

generally associated with the attribute of motion. The primary purpose of dietary therapy for Vata is to ground or stabilize movement. On a seasonal basis, Vata is most prominent in the fall, and this is the most critical time to attend to your diet. TO BALANCE VATA: 1. Keep warm. 2. Choose warming foods and spices. 3. Avoid extreme cold, and cold or frozen foods and drinks. 4. Minimize your intake of raw foods. 5. Make sure your diet is warm, moist, and well lubricated with oil or butter. 6. Emphasize sweet, sour, and salty tastes in your food choices. The person with Pitta dominant in their constitution is blessed with a strong will and good digestive fire. The attributes of Pitta are oily, hot, light, and liquid. Any of these qualities in excess can imbalance a Pitta. Their opposites will calm it. Summer and high noon are the times when a Pitta person will most likely encounter feelings of discontent. TO BALANCE PITTA: 1. Keep cool. 2. Avoid excess heat, steam, and humidity. 3. Avoid excess oils, fried foods, caffeine, salt, alcohol, red meat, and hot spices. 4. Emphasize fresh fruits and vegetables. 5. Enjoy ample amounts of milk, cottage cheese, and whole grains. 6. Emphasize sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes in your food choices. People with Kapha preeminent in their constitution are blessed with strength, endurance, and stamina. The attribute of Kapha is stability. However, Kaphas need to move, especially in Winter. Otherwise, they could get seduced into slipping into a horizontal lifestyle in front of the TV with their favorite edible goodies. TO BALANCE KAPHA: 1. Get plenty of physical activity. 2. Keep your consumption of fat to a minimum, including fried foods. 3. Avoid iced foods and drinks, sweets, and excessive amounts of bread. 4. Choose warm meals and light. 5. Emphasize pungent, bitter,

and astringent tastes in your food and herb choices. 6. Luxuriate in fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices. Please keep in mind, when you are out of balance, you will crave foods that throw you further out of balance. This is the time to be especially mindful of your food choices. For example, when a Vata dominant person is on a plane, instead of eating pretzels and soda, which will make you feel even less grounded due to the salt and air bubbles. Instead, choose the cookie and water to counteract the untethered feeling of flying.

early symptoms of imbalance by dosha

VATA – Anxiety, confusion, constipation, and gas PITTA – Irritability, alternating dry and loose stools, pressure or heat above the neck; KAPHA – Sluggishness, congestion, bloating Finally, the guidelines listed below are from the book, Eat* Taste* Heal, An Ayurvedic Guidebook and Cookbook for Modern Living, and are helpful strategies for all doshas.

10 TIPS FOR HOW TO EAT HEALTHFULLY • Choose to eat in a quiet, settled atmosphere • Offer a blessing or a simple thought of gratitude before eating • Only eat when you are hungry • Wait until the previous meal is digested before eating again • Chew your food thoroughly and eat at a moderate pace • Eat to the point of comfort • Postpone eating if you are upset • Always sit down to eat • Eat around the same time each day • Rest for a few minutes after each meal Whether you are healthy, facing medical or dietary challenges, or simply sense that you could feel better than you do now, Ayurveda has the power to transform and inspire your life. Use Year-end Bonus (or Gift) Wisely

As 2019 draws to a close, you may be anticipating – or have already received – a year-end bonus from your employer. Or you might be receiving a substantial cash gift for the holidays. (If you’re really lucky, you might get both.) You can doubtlessly think of many ways to spend this money right now, but how can you use it to help yourself in the long run? Here are a few suggestions: PAY OFF SOME DEBTS. Virtually all of us carry some type of debt, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. For example, your mortgage not only gives you a place to live and a chance to build equity in your home, but the interest payments are typically tax deductible. Other debts, though, such as those on consumer items, are not so positive – you generally can’t deduct the interest payments, and the items themselves probably won’t enhance your personal wealth. Plus, the bigger your monthly debt payments, the less you’ll have to invest for your future. So, you might want to use your bonus or monetary gift to pay off, or at least pay down, some of your less productive debts. START AN EMERGENCY FUND. If you were to face a large, unexpected expense, such as the need for a new furnace or a major car repair, how would you pay for it? If you didn’t have the cash on hand, you might be forced to dip in to your long-term investments, such as your stocks and mutual funds. A much better option is to build an emergency fund, containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. It will take time to build such a fund, of course, but your year-end bonus or gift money could give you a good start. CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR IRA. You can put in up to $6,000 to your IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. And although you’ve got until April 15, 2020, to fully fund your IRA for the 2019 tax year, you still might want to put your “extra” money into your account right

away. If you wait, you’ll probably find other uses for this money. And if you’re going to enjoy a comfortable retirement, you’ll need to maximize every possible resource – and your IRA is one of your best ones. Furthermore, the sooner you get the money into your IRA, the more potential it will have to grow over time. FEED YOUR COLLEGE FUND. If you’re already contributing to a college fund for your young children or grandchildren, you can use your year-end bonus or monetary gift to add to the fund. If you haven’t already started such an account, you might want to use this money for that purpose. You could open a 529 plan, which provides possible tax benefits and gives you control of the funds until it’s time for them to be used for college or some type of vocational school. (Depending on where you live, you might also get tax benefits from your state if you use a 529 savings plan to pay for K-12 expenses.) To achieve all your financial goals, you’ll need to take advantage of your opportunities – and your year-end bonus or monetary gift can certainly be one of them. BBM
