publisher's note

While scrolling through social media the other day I saw a post that said “Don’t live the same year over and over again and call it a life.” It made me think about how we can all get stuck in a rut and end up doing the same things on repeat. Sure, it’s great to do what makes you happy, but what if there is something better out there? Why not make this the year that we try new things, go on new adventures and pick up a new hobby? I think 2019 could be a lot more fun if instead of saying “I always...” we change our mindset to “I’ve never...” and then give that a try! With that in mind, what are your goals for the New Year? If they are to get healthy, lose weight or get in better shape then you are in luck! After counting up all of the gyms, exercise studios, boot

camps, personal trainers, etc. I have found that in our area there are well over 30 different unique places to get your fitness on – wow! With so many diverse options, there is truly something for everyone. Check out our No Excuses article starting on page 16 where we feature a few of our favorites that offer diverse options to fit your needs. Also in this issue, Allyson Munsell of Edward Jones shares some helpful Financial Resolutions for the New Year, Annie’s Apothecary shares the importance of Knowing Your Labs, we have a great Calendar of Events sharing fun local events and so much more! Happy New Year!

Consider Some New Year’s Financial Resolutions

A

As the year winds down, you may want to look ahead to see which areas of your life you can improve in 2019. Perhaps you’ll decide to exercise more, eat healthier foods, reconnect with old friends or volunteer at a school or charitable organization. All these goals are certainly worthwhile – but you also may want to add some New Year’s financial resolutions to your list.

BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND. Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a low-risk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping in to your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair.

BOOST CONTRIBUTIONS TO YOUR EMPLOYER-SPONSORED RETIREMENT PLAN. Good news! Contribution limits will be increasing for many employer-sponsored retirement plans. For 2019, you can contribute up to $19,000 (up from $18,500 in 2018), or $25,000 (up from $24,500 in 2018) if you’re 50 or older to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while any earnings growth is tax-deferred. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.

CONTROL YOUR DEBTS. Do what you can to keep your debts under control. Ultimately, the less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future.

Here are a few ideas to consider:

TRY TO “MAX OUT” ON YOUR IRA. Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan, you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2019, you can put in up to $6,000 in a traditional or Roth IRA (up from $5,500 in 2018), or $7,000 (up from $6,500) if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and any earnings growth is tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59 ½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. You can put most types of investments – stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on – into an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan.

DON’T OVERREACT TO FINANCIAL MARKET VOLATILITY. In 2018 – especially the last few months of the year – we saw considerable market volatility, with huge drops and big gains in rapid succession. What will 2019 bring? It’s always difficult – and usually futile – trying to forecast the market’s performance over the course of an entire year. But, in any case, try not to overreact to whatever ups and downs we may experience. Instead, continue pursuing an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Following these suggestions can help you become a better investor in 2019 – and beyond.BBM

$50,000

Open January 23 – February 27! GVTC wants to reward students who share their passion for giving back to the community by helping pay for their higher education. This year, The GVTC Foundation has added two new scholarships to its mix, awarding four students total in 2019 with two $20,000 university scholarships and two vocational scholarships up to $5,000. That’s a total of $50,000 for higher education! As in previous years, one senior high school student will receive the Ritchie T. Sorrells $20,000 Leadership Scholarship for their outstanding leadership qualities and use of technology to make a positive impact in our community, and another student will receive the Ola Armstrong $20,000 Volunteerism Scholarship for exemplifying extraordinary service, volunteer work and involvement in their local community. GVTC understands that not everyone envisions going to a four-year university, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t prepare for adulthood with life skills to enhance their communities and support themselves. That’s why in 2019, GVTC is adding two vocational scholarships each worth up to $5,000. If you are a graduating senior in high school from a household subscribed to at least one GVTC service, you can apply to one of GVTC’s four scholarships available through The GVTC Foundation. Desiree Whitney and Anne McCarthy of Aerial Yoga Boerne photos this page by Ron Pritchett

Aerial Yoga Boerne is the only aerial yoga studio in the Boerne/San Antonio area. The studio, co-owned by Desiree Whitney and Anne McCarthy, offers all types and styles of yoga but focuses on aerial yoga. “This unique form of yoga helps to increase flexibility and range of motion along with building strength,” said Whitney. “In addition to finding more length in your spine and safe alignment in your poses, an aerial practice is also fun,” added McCarthy. Aerial yoga classes are great by themselves or also a phenomenal compliment to other forms of exercise. So what exactly sets aerial yoga apart? In aerial yoga you are able to enjoy typical yoga postures as well as new poses suited especially for the aerial hammock. As you continue in your aerial yoga practice you learn to liberate your spine, hips and shoulders and get into deeper stretches as you rely on the hammock to allow your body to move further into each pose. “The hammocks make a big difference in what it allows people to do. Not only can you access deeper stretches, but you can also achieve poses in baby steps, which allows you to build strength

as you go,” Desiree added. “For example, in traditional ground practice, it can take years of training to achieve a headstand, however with the hammocks, the benefits of a headstand can be achieved immediately.” At Aerial Yoga Boerne, they are highly committed to both continuing education and creating a safe environment. According to Desiree, “When building our studio, we worked with engineers to design the steel infrastructure. Our studio has become the gold standard for aerial yoga studios.” In fact, each station, as well as each hammock, is rated for up to 2,000 pounds! Both Anne and Desiree believe in creating the safest environment possible for their clients, that is reflected not only in the attention to detail put into the infrastructure and support of the studio, but also in their continued eduction. Both Anne and Desiree are 500-hour instructors. Anne is also the executive director at the Esther Vexler Yoga School. In addition to classes, Aerial Yoga Boerne even offers travel and retreats to fun and exotic locations. In the past they have traveled to Bali and India and are offering a “Rest and Restore” retreat to Thailand for 2019! Anne and Desiree like to emphasize that while it may look a bit intimidating at first, anyone can do aerial yoga. They offer a variety of classes with high quality instruction. They want to encourage everyone to keep their body moving, breathing and being mindful. The Boerne Family YMCA The Boerne Family YMCA is so much more than a place to work out. Not only does the local Y offer everything from the traditional gym setting equipped with state-of-the-art fitness equipment and weights, an array of group exercise classes, youth sports, programs for active older adults and personal training, but a strong sense of community has been established among members as well. “When you join the Boerne Family YMCA, you belong to a place where parents find a safe, positive environment for children; families come together and spend quality time with each other; children and teens learn what they can achieve; adults connect with friends and learn how to live healthier lives; communities thrive because neighbors support each other and give back and we all build relationships that further our sense of belonging,” said Paul Giguere, executive director of the Boerne Family YMCA. Fitness opportunities are endless at the Y and a supportive community is a big part of wellness. Their staff strives to reach every individual at every fitness level by providing programs designed to support all of their members. Through the group exercise classes, you are guaranteed to find an activity that will meet your needs and deliver results. Group exercise

classes are available throughout each day and include cardio, cycling, kickboxing, yoga, pilates, dance and more! Their instructors lead you through the workouts providing effective, fun and easy to follow steps. The Y offers personal training or small group training classes to help you reach your goals. Personal trainers can help you rev up a stale exercise routine, break out of your fitness plateau, reduce your risk of injury by learning proper techniques and stay motivated and committed. Want some guidance to help you reach your fitness goals, but not quite ready to commit to a personal trainer? FitPath is a free program offered for all Y members where a YMCA Wellness Coach helps you to create a program that is right for you. Whether you want to lift weights, take classes, play sports or have other interests in mind, they can set you up a profile in the ActivTrax system that will help you stay on track and achieve your goals.

Programs catering to active seniors and children are also available. The Y really is a place where anyone of any age can get moving! When youth play sports with the Y they gain more than just exercise. They learn what it takes to be a leader in sports and in life. Understanding the fundamentals of the game and safe play are just the beginning. Know Your Labs!

D

by Chelsea Beck-Smith, PharmD

Do you know what labs you should be getting? When you go in for your annual check-up your doctor orders labs, but do you know what labs are being requested and do you even see the results? Some doctors just call and say everything looks good, but does it really? You have to be your own health advocate and request specific labs to make sure you’re getting the whole picture and always get a copy for your records. If you see numbers creeping out of the normal range you can make lifestyle changes and even try supplementation before you end up needing prescription medications that often come with unpleasant side effects. Let’s review some important labs that you should know. Everyone should be concerned about their heart health since 1 in 4 deaths are due to cardiovascular disease according to the American Heart Association. Doctors order a lipid panel to assess your risk. In this panel you will see your total cholesterol, Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL) also known as your “bad cholesterol,” High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL) also known as your “good cholesterol,” and your triglycerides. These levels have a lot to do with diet and exercise, but there is also a hereditary component to it. You can make simple changes to your diet and start exercising regularly to bring these levels into a healthy range. Stop eating fast food and processed junk and fill your plate with delicious veggies and smaller amounts of lean meat

22

B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2019

or fish. If you need more help supplements like Omega Pure or Bergamot can give you the additional support you need to avoid prescription medications. According to the American Diabetes Association, the 7th leading cause of death is diabetes. Unfortunately, millions of Americans are considered to have prediabetes because their blood sugar (glucose) levels are higher than normal and this puts them at an increased risk for developing diabetes if it is not addressed. This will be assessed in a metabolic panel which measures your fasting blood glucose along with Hemoglobin A1C (HgA1C). HgA1C gives you an average of your blood glucose over the last two to three months. People may become insulin resistant which means your insulin has trouble binding to the cell receptor. Insulin allows your body to lower glucose levels properly, so be sure to check insulin levels too! Here again, diet and exercise are the first things we focus on to get labs back into a healthy range. Trade in the sugar and carbs for some healthy alternatives like a cup of blueberries or an apple with some almond butter. Supplements such as Inositol and Metabolic Xtra can help you reach your goals. Hormones, when in balance and at their optimal levels, help us stay sane, manage weight, increase energy, and so much more. Thyroid levels that should be ordered are Thyroid-

Stimulating Hormone (TSH), Free T4, Free T3, and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO). TSH is commonly the only thyroid level drawn, but to see the whole picture these other thyroid labs should be drawn as well especially if you’re having trouble with weight, energy, and even constipation. TSH has a wide reference range. Optimal TSH levels will fall closer to the center of the range. Selenium is a supplement often used to help support healthy thyroid levels. And if TPO antibodies are present then it’s time to break up with gluten and remove it from your diet. Sex hormones such as estrone, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA should be checked as well. Even though you may be older if you are having unwanted symptoms of hot flashes, sluggishness, low libido, trouble building muscle or sleeping you can optimize your hormones with prescription bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. This can help you feel better and support healthy bones and mental clarity. Vitamin D has been nicknamed the “Sunshine Vitamin” because the ultraviolet-B light from the sun activates the Vitamin D in our skin cells. Vitamin D deficiency has now been linked to a wide range of diseases including depression, schizophrenia, stroke, osteoporosis, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and several types of cancers including breast cancer. A lab can determine if you truly have a Vitamin D deficiency by testing the active form: 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The optimal VitaminD level is between 60 and 100 ng/mL. Vitamin D supplements should contain Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) because it is absorbed quickly, maintains blood levels of the active form, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, for a longer period of time than Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol),

and is more potent than Vitamin D2. Last but not least is the Complete Blood Count (CBC). This is the most common lab test ordered because it can identify the cause of symptoms like fatigue, weakness, or bruising. Your red blood cells are measured here and are responsible for carrying oxygen to tissue and organs throughout your body and helping remove carbon dioxide. If your levels are low you could be anemic. Anemia has several causes such as a deficiency in iron, vitamin B12, or folic acid. Determining the cause of the anemia is essential to treating it appropriately, but if it’s due to one of the deficiencies listed above you can easily supplement with Iron Glycinate, 5-MTHF, or vitamin B12. Play an active role in your healthcare. Listen to your body and look at trends in your labs. This way you can make changes before you get in trouble and end up with unwanted prescription medications along with their side effects. If you want someone to look at your labs and help make lifestyle or supplement recommendations we are happy to set up a consult to get you back in control of your health. Don’t wait to start feeling better, there’s no time like the present. BBM

Texas in the lap of luxury

L

Luxury home sales were a strong driver of the Texas housing market during the first ten months of 2018, according to the 2018 Texas Luxury Home Sales Report by the Texas Association of Realtors (TAR). From October 2017 to November 2018, 5,123 luxury homes—those priced $1 million or higher—were sold across the state, up 11.5 percent from the previous period. During the same time frame, the sales dollar volume of Texas luxury homes sold was over $8.36 million, an 11.3 percent increase. Luxury homes in Texas accounted for 8.5 percent of all sales dollar volume. Despite the surge in sales volume, the median price for Texas luxury homes has remained unchanged at $1.35 million. The average price per sf was $358, a 2.5 percent increase from the first ten months of 2017 and more than double the $128 average price per sf for the median Texas home. From January to October, luxury homes in Texas spent an average of 94 days on the market, a decrease of four days from the same time frame in 2017. Luxury homes spend more time on the market on average compared with lowerpriced segments of the housing market.
