At the beginning of a year many people turn their thoughts to getting things in order. Check out the article on page 26, here Adrianne Carnes of Organized Me gives advice on how to organize your home one room at a time. How about your appearance? Are you looking to drop a few pounds as we begin 2018? Maybe spruce up your wardrobe or how about change your hair? Turn to page 8 to read the article on Barbie’s Salon and Spa and consider paying them a visit for a fresh new look! This time of year often has people reflecting on their health as well.

I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Veronica “Barbie” Loehr has always been artistic, a trait that has surely helped her pave the way to owning and operating a successful local salon. “I wanted to find a career that allowed me to be creative and make a living at the same time,” said Loehr. “For me, the best of both worlds came together as a hair dresser.” Day after day, Veronica’s artistic abilities are on display as she creates breathtaking creative hair color, cuts, styles and updos! Her Facebook and Instagram accounts are filled with pictures of one beautiful head of hair after another. It is easy to see why she has quickly built up a large clientele. According to Loehr, “We get new clients coming in all the time from referrals, but I also have customers that have been coming to me since I was in beauty school. My clients become my friends and family. I love that I get to spend my days interacting with such great people and

making them look good while I’m at it!” Having graduated from the Milan Institute of Cosmetology in 2009, Veronica went right to work as an assistant manager for a Regis Salon. “I was there for over three years and that experience really helped me develop the knowledge of how to run a salon. I became familiar with scheduling, inventory and what it really takes for the day-to-day operations,” stated Loehr. After branching out on her own and doing booth rental, Veronica decided that it was time for her to venture out and open her very own salon. “My nickname is Barbie and I decided that would be a fun name for a salon, so Barbie’s Salon and Spa opened its doors in February of 2014,” she said with a smile. Loehr is a Boerne native and wanted to keep her business here as well. She found a great spot right on Main Street across from the fire station. “We have two

other hair dressers here at Barbie’s Salon and Spa, Brittany Killian and Kimberly Prescott. Both of these ladies are highly talented and a great asset to the salon. While we all can do everything when it comes to cuts and color, I would say that Brittany’s expertise is extensions and Kimberly does a lot of the Brazilian Blowouts! It a nice mix and we all complement each other well,” said Veronica. “We also have some additional spots available for booth rental for stylists that are looking for a great opportunity to work in a fun environment and have the ability to manage their own schedules.” Clients have the convenience of being able to book their appointments online with any of the stylists. They don’t typically take walk-ins and they book up quickly so making your appointments in plenty of time is a must! While creative hair color is probably Loehr’s favorite thing to do, she says she does plenty of kids’ cuts and men’s hair as well. “I really like to do updos for weddings, proms and special events. It’s a fun break to get to do something a little different. I also do makeup, which is something that I really enjoy,” she said. Veronica does a lot of weddings and special events, to book her for your special day call in plenty of time as they book well in advance.

Veronica likes to stay on top of the current hair trends as well. Each year she attends the Armstrong McCall World’s Fair where she attends classes and enjoys the demonstrations and platform artists. “Hair is a really fun accessory. I love that the possibilities are basically endless. For about the past year and a half the wild colors have been a big hit and those are super fun. It’s funny, I have more older clients that ask for the bright hair hues than I do younger ones. I also love it when people bring me photos of what they want. That way I can see through their eyes what they have in mind and it is easier to get their desired results.” Veronica feels blessed to have been able to build a successful local business doing something that she loves. “We offer competitive pricing, great service and focus on using products that are healthier for your hair. Come see us, we’re sure you will love the end result!”BBM

Luxury home smallest but fastestgrowing Texas housing segment

T

Texas luxury home sales were up 19.1 percent this year, according to the 2017 Texas Luxury Home Sales Report from the Texas Association of Realtors (TAR). Luxury homes—those sold for $1 million m illion or more—are the fastest-growing Texas T exas housing segment. Vicki Fullerton, chairman of TAR, attributes this to rising home prices, high-end remodeling activity, and relocation activity from outof-state residents. From October 2016 to November 2017, Texas luxury home sales jumped to 4,622 sales. The sales dollar volume was over $7.5 million, a 19.9 percent increase over the prior year. The median price so far this year remained unchanged year over year at $1.35 million. The average price per square foot for luxury homes was $349, a 1.9 percent increase from the first ten months of 2016. That's more than double the $122 average price per sf for the median Texas home. From January to October 2017, luxury homes in Texas spent an average of 98 days on the market, an increase of three days from the same time frame in 2016.BBM I nformation courtesy of Texas Association of Realtors and Real Estate Center Online News

ACHIEVING OPTIMAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS THROUGH THE ART OF COMPOUNDING AND CUSTOMER EDUCATION

Your health is personal; so personal in fact that there’s not always a one-size-fits-all solution to address your individual healthcare needs. “At Annie’s Apothecary, we consider ourselves problem solvers,” said owner, Dr. Leigh Ann Grasso, PharmD. “We provide specialized medications through the art of compounding created to address the individual needs of our customers.” “There are countless reasons why a prescription medication might need to be compounded, but the most common one is to improve patient outcomes,” said Dr. Grasso. “For example, a patient may be sensitive to standard drug strengths or be allergic to preservatives or dyes. With a physician’s prescription, our staff at Annie’s Apothecary can change the strength of a medication or alter its form to make it easier for the patient to use. Annie’s Apothecary has the ability to prepare medication using unique delivery systems, such as a lollipop, a rapid-dissolve tablet, a suppository or a topical cream. “We make medication specifically for the patient. For example, if they have difficulty swallowing pills, we can make a flavored suspension instead. Another reason is to decrease side effects of certain medicines. A perfect example is compounding a topical cream

16

B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2018

for pain instead of having to take pain pills that can cause drowsiness and impair daily activities,” Dr. Grasso added. Compounding is also beneficial for children and animals, both of which can be difficult when it comes time to take medicine. Some of Annie’s Apothecary’s most unique cases include compounding for a flamingo at the San Antonio Zoo and a pet snake! For those of you that prefer cats and dogs, Annie’s Apothecary can make tasty liquids, treats, or even topical applications that your pet will love. “We believe in not only treating a patient’s symptoms, but in getting to the root of their problem. Not sleeping well and weight gain are the two biggest symptoms I see, but the reason for them could be different

in each person. This is why patient consultation is so important to us,” said Dr. Rachel Krajewski, PharmD. “Here at Annie’s Apothecary, we are continually striving to give the best patient care possible.” Dr. Krajewski is a certified Hormone Replacement Specialist who handles the hormone and adrenal consultations at Annie’s Apothecary. “Inadequate production or an imbalance of your hormones may be manifested through a variety of symptoms. Most commonly I see fatigue, moodiness, and low libi-

do. We specialize in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) to help correct the levels of these hormones and alleviate symptoms. BHRT means the hormones are identical in structure to the ones your body naturally makes, so your body knows how to use and metabolize them ultimately minimizing unwanted side effects.” Dr. Krajewski added, ”If you feel like hormone testing is right for you, we can get you set up with a non-invasive, at home test kit and book a follow up consultation to go continued on page 18

over your results.” During a one-on-one consultation, the pharmacist will evaluate your medication list, clinical symptoms, lifestyle, diet, and lab values, if available. Their goal for every appointment is to create a customized and achievable plan to help you feel better. They work with your doctor to come up with a compounded prescription to address your individual needs. After the consultation, the pharmacist will continue to collaborate with you and your doctor throughout your journey to whole body wellness. The hormone testing is very popular with women, however according to Dr. Krajewski, “Once the women see what a difference it has made in their health, they usually send their husbands in to have their hormones tested too!” In addition to the Hormone Testing, Annie’s Apothecary also provides Food Sensitivity Testing. Dr. Chelsea Beck-Smith, PharmD, administers the FIT Test, or Food Inflammation Testing, with a quick finger stick that is then sent off to test for sensitivities to 132 different foods and additives. When the results come back, Dr. Beck-Smith will work with patients to create a gut healing protocol with alternatives and substitutes based upon their specific needs. It also includes a seven day meal plan. “Many patients come in with an upset stomach, headaches, pain and inflammation and even rashes. Many skin disorders are actually food issues,” said Dr. BeckSmith. “Food sensitivities are often delayed reactions, so it makes it difficult to pinpoint the issue. However, by testing we can get to the root cause and then eliminate the culprit. We also suggest supplements for healing and

digestion and then check back in and eventually work to reintroduce foods into the diet.” Since August of 2007, Annie’s Apothecary has been concentrating fully to be the best resource to achieve optimal health and wellness through the art of compounding, pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements, and patient education. Annie’s also offers Young Living Essential Oils and Veritas and Keys Skin Care products. They even have supplements to help your furry friends. RESOLUTiONS FOR A BETTER YOU!

T

Tired of the same old New Year’s resolutions we all keep recycling year after year? This year, as we enter into 2018, why not resolve to become the best version of yourself? Here are a few suggestions of some fresh resolutions that just might make this year turn out to be the best one yet! LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY Whether you learn a new skill, pick up a new hobby, or just spend a couple minutes each day reading a random fact, all of this will lead to a greater sense of fulfillment and a more well-rounded life. Knowledge is power! Learning something new each day has been shown to reduce stress. For example, a new hobby helps to break us out of our mundane routine and stretches the muscles in our brain. It is also common for people to talk about things they are actively learning, therefore it’s a great way to form new connections and build relationships. Learning more about your industry will keep you relevant and give you a heads up against your competition. And last, but certainly not least, learning new information expands your mind and exposes you to new things! HAVE MORE FUN As our lives get busier and busier, we all seem to be having less and less fun! You don’t have to be a kid to play! Playing can foster relaxation and stimulation for adults and does wonders for inspiring creativity and emotional well-being. There are many ways to play that can be as simple

Don’t miss out on appreciating life’s littlest pleasures, this year try to pay attention to the things that make everyday great. Watching a sunset, listening to the laughter of your loved

Bitcoin Mania

O

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW by Karl Eggerss, Eggerss Capital Management

Over the last few weeks, many of the questions we’re answering have been about Bitcoin. The popularity and curiosity have increased recently due to the meteoric rise in price. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and a digital payment system. It is actually one of many cryptocurrencies, but it has the most market share. It’s over 3 times the size of the #2 cryptocurrency, so it gets the most publicity. It was invented in 2008 by someone using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The idea was to have a peer-to-peer cash system that did not involve the banks. After the financial crisis and great recession of 2008, many did not trust the banking system. Thus, cryptocurrencies were invented - a digital, encrypted, and anonymous way to store money and transact business. Simply put, it is an alternative currency to U.S. dollars, Japanese Yen, British Pounds, Euros, Pesos, etc. But, the adoption rate to use Bitcoin as a currency has been slow, and many illegal activities have been transacted using cryptocurrencies because of their security and anonymity. Then, several hacks occurred, and some exchanges where Bitcoin was held, went bankrupt. This caused wild swings in the price of Bitcoin along with other cryptocurrencies and mistrust. Unlike stocks, this is an “investment” that has no cash flow, no earnings, and sells no products; hence, the debate on what exactly cryptocurrencies accomplish. In 2017, the price began to rise and the interest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies rose as well. In addition, people began mining cryptos using power-

22

B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2018

ful computers purchased to create cryptocurrencies. These computers run various computers and algorithms to create the “coin”. As with any asset, more demand and less supply leads to higher prices. And, like other assets, cryptocurrencies can be traded on several different exchanges. In late 2017, both the CBOE Options Exchange & the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) began allowing futures in Bitcoin to be traded on their exchanges. This added validity to Bitcoin along with liquidity. But, it didn’t slow down the volatility. Cryptocurrencies have seen dramatic price fluctuation since their inception causing many to question their use as a currency. Regardless of the volatility, the rise in price has caused many to jump in. If you’re considering purchasing or investing in cryptocurrencies, here are a few guidelines and questions to consider: 1. Why are you buying it? Is it because everyone’s talking about it or simply because the price is going up? 2. Are you trying to get rich quickly? 3. Spend several weeks researching cryptocurrencies. This is a complex and new investment vehicle with a lot of risk. 4. Have an action plan regarding purchasing and selling. 5. Consider the tax consequences. 6. Determine an appropriate amount of your liquid net worth…what impact will a successful investment or failure have on your life?

7. Consider a potential investment in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency as your riskiest and most volatile asset. 8. Never borrow money to purchase a cryptocurrency. Like the internet dot com bubble of the late 1990s, many people will become rich and perhaps many more will lose a fortune. There are currently over 1,000 cryptocurrencies and that number is growing. Many of them likely won’t exist in the next few years like many dot com companies that went bankrupt in the early 2000s. So, figuring out which one to buy and how to buy it is another element of complexity. Currently, cryptocurrencies are analogous to the gold rush. It’s the wild west right now…there are few rules and regulations. Consequently, there is potential for fraud and for investors to lose a lot of money. Next year, we anticipate the regulations to tighten up quite a bit, which is good for consumers. The default for one’s capital is in their pocket. Then, when opportunity strikes, a smart and disciplined investor executes their plan. Without a plan, one is destined for failure most of the time. Consulting a fee-only independent advisor is the best course of action to develop a strategy when it comes to any investment and how it may or may not fit into your portfolio. BBM In 2010, Karl established Eggerss Capital Management, his own registered investment advisory firm dedicated to providing clients with superior financial counsel in the changing economy. His market insight and cutting edge strategies help fulfill the mission of Eggerss Capital to help clients be protected and profitable in the face of a rapidly changing market. TEXAS POPULATION GREW TO 28.3 MILLION IN 2017

A

After gaining almost 400,000 new residents in one year, Texas is now home to 28.3 million people. The Census Bureau estimates that Texas crossed that population threshold between July 2016 and July 2017. The Lone Star State had the seventh fastest growth rate in the country in the past year at 1.4 percent. It experienced the biggest numeric population growth of any state. Unlike last year, a majority of the state’s growth came from natural increase and not people moving to the state. The addition of 209,690 residents was attributed to natural increase. The state added an additional 189,580 residents as a result of net migration. BBM Information courtesy of the Fort Worth Business Press and Real Estate Center Online News

“The Only Accredited Compounding Pharmacies in Kerr & Kendall Counties!” Cortisol is a hormone produced by your adrenal glands which gives you energy to get you through the day. Typically, it starts off high in the morning to get you up and running and slowly tapers off throughout the day so you can rest at night. Your cortisol curve should look like the big drop on a rollercoaster. But when your body is under stress cortisol levels will go up to give you the boost you need. That’s why cortisol is often referred to as our stress hormone. The problem becomes when you’re under chronic stress your cortisol can become depleted leading to many unpleasant symptoms. The Organized Home. One Room at a Time. by Adrianne Carnes

Is “Getting and Staying Organized” one or your resolutions this year? Many of us are trying to get organized and maintain order beyond the first few weeks of the year. We may be wrestling with piles and overcrowded closets in our house or we might just feel like our personal lives are the last priority amongst all of the things we need to do. I'm Adrianne Carnes, and I'm a Personal Organizer. I help people who are tired of feeling lost and overwhelmed. I help them to simplify the chaos, by creating organized spaces while curating a meaningful personal style. If you’re ready to see real progress in organizing your home, you simply need a plan and a shift in your perspective. When you start organizing the different spaces in your home, consider these three things: • Lifestyle. Assess the situation. How will this space support your lifestyle? Is the purpose of the room clear? Are there things in the room that do not support its function or add to its beauty? • Style. How to balance function with beauty. When you choose anything in your home, it should be functional and beautiful. Some things are more functional than beautiful such as your microwave, and other items, like your antique rocking chair that reminds you of

26

B oerne B usiness M onthly | January 2018

your grandma are more beautiful than functional (comfortable). This is ok; generally try to choose things that have both high function and high beauty. • Need for variety. Organization isn’t always about minimalism. If you are an abundance lover, you will want more decorative items than someone who feels easily overwhelmed by too much going on around them. Every space in your home has a purpose, and the function of the room should support that purpose. Let’s go through each room together. You will soon have a plan to conquer chaos and master your resolution. The Entry Way. Whether you have a foyer or a mudroom or both, setting a functional entry is key to gracefully managing your home. Every season comes with its own stuff. Think about who will be dumping their outwear and the reality of the space that is available? In small entries, vertical solutions keep your floor clear and less of an obstacle course. You may choose to use the nearby hall closet to hang the jackets or hooks above a bench for backpacks and boots or vintage gym lockers for pool towels and flip flops. Make sure it works for all the people who will be using it, family and guests, adults and kids.

Hanging a clock in the entry way is a fun way to express some personal style. Do you prefer oversized, digital or maybe retro? An entry rug is another way to personalize the space. It needs to withstand a hundred entries and exits a day, and since it will be the first thing you see as you walk in and the last thing you see as you leave, it might as well be gorgeous. Create a command station near the family entrance to management paperwork before it enters the home, and to make important reminders accessible. The Living Room. I don’t believe in unused rooms or unused things in any family home, no matter it’s size. Whatever your preferred activities, there are many ways to ensure that the room is used the way you designed it. Once you’ve determined how the room will be used, you can make it gorgeous, choosing materials, furniture and accents that work best for the plan you’ve made. Decide how you most want to spend your time in your living room and then

tackle it section by section. Over here is where we’ll chat, and there is where we’ll read, and that’s where we’ll play the piano. You can even assign your living room extra jobs depending on your family. The Family Room. Some houses have separate living rooms and family rooms, and some houses have one room that does double duty. This room is where the family plays, watches tv and relaxes. Often times the family room holds the family library, also. This room will be very personal with family art work. Discover the activities you will do in the family room, and then arrange the furniture by groups. The Kitchen. The kitchen is where all food activity happens. It’s also where the family meets in the morning and where we celebrate birthdays and holidays. It’s where we visit with our friends and make memories. The kitchen performs a lot of duties. Start by zoning your kitchen into the following categories: food storage, food prep, clean up and eating. If you have a large kitchen, you can further zone the space into food prep categories, such as a baking section, hot drink station and cocktail area. Then get organized! Group like foods in your pantry and make sure everything is visible so that you don’t end up with expired cans of tomatoes hidden in the back corner. A big part of organization is being able to see what you have. Don’t overstuff your cabinets or drawers. If you don’t have a lot of space in your kitchen, then get rid of the things you have until they fit the kitchen storage neatly. Next, choose your table and make it work for you. What shape is the best for your room and what size will fit? How many chairs will you use regularly. Make sure you leave room to store the extra chairs so that they are easily accessible and not in the way. The Kid’s Bedrooms. The function of this room will depend on your family’s philosophy and the space in your home. You might want to keep the room only for sleeping and dressing, and encourage your kids to play amongst the family or in a play room. However, you might want to contain all the kid’s toys and collections in their individual space. Whichever way you choose to design the kid’s rooms, make it work for them right now; don’t design it for the future. Keep the toy storage easy to find and easy to put away. Toys can easily take over the room, so figure out storage that will work for both you (attractive) and your kids (easy to use). Think about clean up and make it as easy and simple as possible. continued on page 29

Put clothes within reach. Clothing storage will change with every age. No matter what age, keep the dresser drawers no more than halfway full so that when they open their drawers, they can easily see everything that’s in them. The Adult’s Bedroom. This is your room (sometimes shared with your spouse). It can be as fabulous as you want. It should be thoughtfully designed for comfort and relaxation with no distraction. Start with the furniture you want to use in the space. Do you need to add a dresser for extra storage? Will you hang a tv on the wall? Keep the nightstands clear with only the necessary things. Personalize the room with artwork. The Laundry Room and Bathrooms. These rooms carries the heavy responsibility of keeping the whole family looking neat and clean. These rooms receive rush hour traffic, then resume quiet for the rest of the day. Keep it bright. Even the smallest laundry room can be improved with a scrub down and a fresh coat of white paint. Make it pretty; it’s worth it. Especially if laundry is not something you enjoy doing, a pretty laundry room will greet you with a smile and make the chore bearable. You can do this with pretty detergent containers, attractive laundry baskets and a fresh cover for your ironing board. Develop a system for tackling laundry that keeps the room clutter free and the process organized. Try to keep the surfaces clean and tidy so that it’s pleasant and easy for everyone who uses the space. Whether kids share a bathroom or the parents share a bathroom, tidying it daily keeps the complains to a minimum. Frequently review what you are storing, and toss the extra make up samples you aren’t going to use and always throw away empty containers. Design your kid’s bathroom to be accessible and easy to maintain. For example, hang the towel hooks at a reachable height so the kids’ can easily hang their towels after each use.

The Office. Decide what your room wants to be and who will use it. Is this where you manage your family finances? Is this where kids do their homework and craft projects? Does the room need two desks or one desk and a large work table? Once you decide on the function, it’ll be easier to tackle how to personalize the space. Organize the office supplies. There are endless options for storing markers, paint brushes and paper. Some people like a rolling metal cart, some folks like peg boards on the wall while others like to use the drawers in their desk. Take an inventory of your supplies and match the storage to your inventory. Maintaining organization in your home is a continual effort and will be adjusted as your family grows and changes. At a quick glance, the function of each room should be obvious and reflect your family’s style. A thoughtfully organized home is a gift to you and your family, and I want to help you create a home that is functional and appealing.
