“Dog & Pony is a centerpiece of the Boerne community,” said Managing Partner, Brandon Fuller. “We believe in building a strong community, and we’re thrilled to take Dog & Pony to the next level.” The restaurant, which was originally opened in 2011, re-opened it’s doors at the end of May having been revitalized under the vision of seasoned restaurant/entertainment executives. The changes have brought
Boerne an eatery that will be a true local hot spot. Dog & Pony guests will notice familiar menu items, paired with fresh arrivals. “The redeveloped menu ranges from comfort to culinary. We kept the ‘homerun hitters’ like the best salad bar in town, burgers, chicken fried steak, salmon, wings, and the starters and added in some new items like the wraps,” said Fuller. Keeping in line with the continued on page 18

restaurant’s original nod to the two public high school mascots in town, the Boerne High School Greyhounds and the Boerne Champion High School Chargers, several of the menu items are named after local school mascots as well. Fuller added, “The menu will feel very familiar, but with upgraded ingredients and an overall better value. Oh, and of course always fresh French fries!” The addition of a full service bar will help diners beat the heat with draft beer, tasteful wines and select mixed drinks including frozen margaritas. The restaurant space has been reimaged as well. The entrance has been moved to create a better flow. Local decorator, Boerne Farmhouse, has shaped Dog & Pony’s new cowboy industrial look. One of the most impressive features of the new Dog & Pony is the renovated outdoor entertainment complex that includes more covered deck seating, enhanced playground attractions and a live music venue. Situated under majestic oaks, Dog & Pony’s expanded outdoor entertainment area features a playscape

built for fun, a new basketball court, a live music stage and even a dance floor. The nearly two-acre spread is enclosed by a secure high fence to give parents peace of mind. A planned live music lineup will put springs in the steps of all ages. Fuller spent several years as General Manager of Tinstar, la Madeleine and Fish City Grill. He also spent several years in industrial sales supporting restaurants and other industries. “Our experience providing high quality food and entertainment will make Dog & Pony an even more attractive destination,” stated Fuller, who also formerly worked for Alamo Drafthouse in San Antonio. “We have overhauled everything from the menu to the décor to the seating. Now you can eat, drink and relax with plenty of room for your kids to play.” “We’re excited to bring Dog & Pony back to the greater Boerne community,” Fuller said. “Whether you’re watching a game or celebrating one, Dog & Pony will be a place for family memories for years to come.” BBM

NEW LISTING TOOLS 2019 GVTC Charitable Golf Classic Raised Nearly $222,000 for Local Non-Profits SELL HOMES FASTER!
T
Annual Fundraiser Raises Much-Needed Funds for Nonprofits, Student Scholarships, and Community Grants in GVTC’s Service Area
The GVTC Foundation, established in 2006 to profoundly enhance the quality of life for residents in GVTC Communications' service area, is pleased to announce that its 15th Annual GVTC Charitable Golf Classic on April 23 raised $221,884.88 for local grants, scholarships, and charities their service area. Over 240 golfers and employee volunteers participated in the event, which is The Foundation’s only annual fundraiser. This total surpasses any tournament thus far. The proceeds from the tournament, which was held this year at the TPC San Antonio JW Marriott Hill Country Resort & Spa, will be used for grants towards nonprofits across their entire service area as well as help fund The GVTC Foundations' four scholarships totaling up to $50,000 for area students. “Every year we continue to be surprised and blown away by the support and love of our community leaders, business partners, and vendors,” said CEO and President, Ritchie T. Sorrells, who founded The GVTC Foundation in 2006. ‘Canine Classmates’ Speaks to GVTC Charitable Golf Classic Fundraising Outcomes Each year, The GVTC Foundation invites a beneficiary non-profit organization to speak with sponsors at the golf classic, to share a real-world example of their contributions and support. Canine Classmates, a Comal County organization that encourages literacy and socialization in over 400 struggling and at-risk elementary school students, presented this year. Golfers and attendees learned that in pairing children with trained service dogs, Canine Classmates is able to help students achieve increased literacy skills, motivation, and self-confidence. GVTC Charitable Golf Classic “Making a Lasting Difference in Our Community” Since 2006, The GVTC Foundation has
given more than $3.3 million in donations. It provides grants and event sponsorships for charitable organizations and non-profit groups across six areas of giving: health & human services, youth programs and services, volunteer emergency services, education, culture, and public charities. It also provides scholarships of up to $50,000 to deserving students through the $20,000 Ritchie T. Sorrells Scholarship for Leadership, the $20,000 Ola Armstrong Scholarship for Volunteerism, and two vocational scholarships worth up to $5,000 each. “I come back to this fundraising event every year because I know The GVTC Foundation is making a lasting difference in our community,” said Chuck Knibbe, GVTC Chairman of the Board. “Ninety-five percent of everything raised here goes directly back into projects and nonprofit efforts to improve our area for our kids, and their kids. It’s absolutely rewarding to be a part of that.” Held in the spring, The Annual GVTC Charitable Golf Classic is the only fundraiser The GVTC Foundation has. The date for the 2020 GVTC Charitable Golf Classic will be announced soon. Since its inception, The GVTC Charitable Golf Classic has raised over $1.1 million due to the support of its vendors and business partners. In particular, The Foundation wants to thank Calix, the Premier Golf Sponsor, and the sponsors who have participated since The Foundation’s very first fundraiser. Without their support, The GVTC Foundation would not be able to give back as much as they do. Community Members May Support The GVTC Foundation Community members interested in supporting the important work of The GVTC Foundation may do so at any time by donating online at www.gvtcfoundation.com. A
the full body relaxer article courtesy of Annie’s Apothecary
Are you always tense? Are you constantly battling sore and weak muscles? If your current treatment isn’t doing the job and your health continues to suffer, then magnesium could be the answer to your woes. Magnesium is a critical mineral that is essential to over 300 functions in our bodies. It has beneficial effects for muscles and can be used to relieve overall tension and soreness. Magnesium is needed for energy production, the development of bone, muscle and nerve function, and for DNA and RNA production, among other things. Magnesium is found in a wide variety of plant and animal foods. Some of the best sources of dietary magnesium include: nuts, seeds, beans, green leafy vegetables like broccoli and spinach, whole grains, and red and white meats. While magnesium may be abundant in these foods, the body absorbs only around 30-40% of it. Many of the foods we eat now, even those that should have magnesium, lack magnesium. Processed foods often have no or low amounts of magnesium and many of the crops being produced have lower amounts of magnesium than expected. Commercial farming can lead to soil with low magnesium if the crops are not rotated and essential nutrients are not added in. Plants depend on the nutrients in the soil to grow and if they are not present, the crops will have lower amounts of those nutrients. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of magnesium for adult males is 400mg and 310mg for non-pregnant adult females. Scientific studies suggest adequate doses ranging from 500mg-1500mg; therefore, current recommendations may not be enough. Numerous dietary surveys have found that magnesium intake for the average adult, based on the RDA, is not adequate without supplementation, leaving many people with magnesium deficiency. Magnesium deficiency is typically determined by blood; however, this is not a good indicator of the body’s total magnesium amount. The adult human body contains around 25 grams of magnesium with the large majority being found in the bones and soft tissues, while less than 1% is found in the blood. So while the blood levels may appear to be fine, the entire body could still be deficient. Long-term low intake or

excessive losses of magnesium due to health conditions, or medications that affect magnesium levels, can lead to a deficiency. Some signs and symptoms of magnesium deficiency include: loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness, numbness, tingling, muscle cramping, seizures, and abnormal heart rhythm. Because magnesium and calcium have a close relationship in the body, a severe magnesium deficiency can also cause low levels of calcium. There are some medications, health conditions, and lifestyle choices that can put you at risk for having inadequate magnesium. Diuretics, often known as water pills, are medications that can increase the excretion of magnesium from our bodies potentially causing low magnesium. Other medications that deplete magnesium levels are bisphosphonates such as Boniva® and Fosamax®, antibiotics such as tetracyclines and quinolones, proton pump inhibitors such as Nexium® and Prilosec®, oral contraceptives, and estrogen replacement. Individuals who have gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease and intestinal resection, as well as other health conditions, such as Type II diabetes, can have magnesium deficiency because of lower absorption and increased excretion. Chronic alcoholism can lead to a number of vitamin and mineral deficiencies including magnesium since it lowers absorption and increases excretion. As we age, the our magnesium needs also increase. It is possible to have too much magnesium. Important signs and symptoms of magnesium toxicity can include: diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. When beginning to take a magnesium supplement it is suggested to slowly increase the dose every couple of days in order to optimize it. When the body can no longer absorb the magnesium, diarrhea will start to occur and this marker can be used to identify the maximum tolerable dose for each person. Magnesium toxicity is more likely to occur with large doses of magnesium laxatives and in individuals with kidney failure. Magnesium, both as a supplement and a treatment, can be extremely
beneficial to our health. Some of the benefits include its use as a muscle relaxant, overall calming effect, bone health, and its use in preventing migraine headaches. There are many commonly used forms of magnesium. The various forms have different indications based on the differences in their overall absorption and, in some cases, where they can go in the body. Magnesium glycinate, which is highly absorbed and widely distributed throughout the body, is often used for overall magnesium replacement. Magnesium sulfate is often compounded into creams and used as a muscle relaxant, for wound care, and as a skinsoothing agent; it is also the active ingredient in Epsom salt. Magnesium threonate is a newer form that is effective at getting into the brain where it can have beneficial calming effects, beneficial headache effects, and aid in healthy nervous system function. Magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide are typically used as treatments for constipation; magnesium citrate acts as a laxative while magnesium oxide has stool-softening properties because they are both poorly absorbed. Magnesium carbonate works well as an antacid for heartburn and indigestion. Magnesium chloride is used in many different preparations; with its oral form being used for overall magnesium supplementation as well as improved digestion and its topical form for muscle relaxing and overall skin and wound health. Magnesium is vital to energy production and many of our bodily functions, however people of all ages are not getting enough from diet alone. Magnesium supplementation is recommended because it can lead to better heart health, physical health, and mental health. Next time you start to feel your muscles tense up and become sore and weak you should ask yourself if you are getting enough magnesium; instead of those pain pills, magnesium may be just what you need for relief. Challenge yourself to take a magnesium supplement and you will discover its full body benefits. For those interested in doing some selfinvestigation of magnesium we recommend a book titled “The Magnesium Factor” by Mildred Seelig, MD, NPH. If you have questions about magnesium or other supplements, or want to start supplementing magnesium and don’t know which type is right for you, feel free to call or stop by Annie’s Apothecary where our friendly staff will assist you however we can. Father's Day:
I
If you’re a dad, you may well be pleased to unwrap some tools as Father’s Day gifts. Of course, it might be a stereotype that all men are handy at repairs; women certainly can be every bit as good when it comes to building and fixing things. In fact, the construction process is valuable for anyone to learn – and the same skills that go in to creating and mending physical objects also can be applied to financial projects – such as working toward a comfortable retirement. Here are a few of those skills: DIAGNOSING THE CHALLENGE A good craftsperson knows that the first step toward accomplishing any outcome is to assess the challenge. So, for example, if you want to build some bookshelves right into the wall, you’ll need to locate the wall studs, determine if you have adequate space for the shelving you want and allow room for future expansion. Similarly, if you want to retire at a certain age, you need to consider the key variables: your current and future income (How much can you count on from your retirement plans?), where you'll live (Will you downsize or relocate? Will you rent or own a house or condominium?) And what you'll do as a retiree (Will you travel extensively or stick close to home? Will you do some type of work for pay or pursue your hobbies and volunteer?). ASSEMBLING THE RIGHT TOOLS AND MATERIALS To put together your bookshelf, you will need the right tools – saw, hammer, drill, sander and so on – and the right building materials – plywood, nails, screws, glue, brackets, moldings and so on. And to work toward a comfortable retirement, you'll also need the right tool – in the form of a long-term financial strategy, based on your specific retirement goals, risk tolerance and time horizon – along with the
Tools Are Great for Father's Day – and for Investors appropriate materials – the mix of investments you use to carry out that strategy. These investments include those you’ve placed in your IRA, your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and those held outside your formal retirement accounts. Ideally, you want a diversified mix of investments capable of providing growth potential over time, within the context of your individual risk tolerance. REVIEW YOUR WORK Once you’ve finished your bookshelf, you occasionally may need to make some minor adjustments or repairs in response to slippage, cracks or other issues that can develop over time. As an investor, you also may need to tweak your financial strategy periodically and adjust your investment mix – not necessarily because something is broken, but to accommodate changes in your life, such as a new job, new family situation and new goals. Furthermore, over time, your risk tolerance may change, and this needs to be reflected in your array of investments.. Consequently, conducting an annual portfolio review with your financial professional should be a priority. Tools are a big deal on Father’s Day. But the construction-related tasks they represent, physically and symbolically, go beyond any one holiday and can be used by anyone interested in working toward a solid financial future. BBM
