NEW TO NEUROTRANSMITTERS?

A

by Dr. Chelsea Beck-Smith, RPh and Dr. Rachel Krajewski, RPh

Are you having trouble with sleep, mood, concentration, or fatigue? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your neurotransmitters could be the culprit! Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers of the nervous system. These chemical messengers tell your heart to beat and your stomach to digest food but they also affect your mood, sleep, concentration, and energy levels. They can cause unwanted symptoms when they are out of balance due to stress, poor diet, environmental toxins, genetic predisposition, infections, drugs (prescription and recreational), and/or alcohol and caffeine usage. There are two main categories, calming and stimulating, when talking about the different neurotransmitters. The calming neurotransmitters are GABA, serotonin, glycine, and taurine which play important roles in mood and sleep by promoting calmness and relaxation. The stimulatory neurotransmitters are glutamate, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, histamine, and PEA which are necessary to help regulate the sleep-wake cycle, energy, motivation, and focus. Symptoms can occur when neurotransmitter levels become too high or too low. Your symp-

toms can be caused by a variety of imbalances in your nervous system. The good news is that neurotransmitter levels can be measured and supported by pharmaceutical grade supplements if needed. Stop and think for a moment about how the food you eat can affect your mood. That’s no coincidence. Your diet contains amino acids which are the building blocks needed to make your neurotransmitters. These amino acids come from different foods such as fish, chicken, dairy, and nuts to name a few. Remember that it’s all about balance so if you’re eating processed junk food and other inflammatory foods you may be the reason your mood is sour. Eating a well-balanced diet and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 times a week can help raise your neurotransmitters levels. Exercise can also help reduce stress which can really do a number on your overall health. Stress can also cause your diet to slip. So take the time to care for yourself by going to a yoga class or going for a walk with your dog; they’ll enjoy it too. Also try to limit the toxins you put in your body such as alcohol and try to avoid pesticides and household cleaners. These toxins can effect neurotransmitter levels by killing brain cells that contain your neurotransmitters. Look for natural alternatives such as essential oils. At Annie’s Apothecary we offer neurotransmitter testing that can help identify your unique imbalances. Looking at your test results and troublesome symptoms, we can provide custom-tailored recommendations specific to your needs. We focus on restoring balance through lifestyle modifications including diet, exercise, and toxin avoidance in addition to recommending supplements to support your imbalances if needed. Come visit one of the pharmacists at Annie’s Apothecary and ask if neurotransmitter testing is right for you! BBM

WHEELER’S WESTERN OUTFITTERS PROVIDES A BIG WIN FOR THE COMMUNITY FOR THE SECOND YEAR

Wheeler’s Western Outfitters, located just off the interstate in Boerne, kicked off their second annual “Wheeler’s Big Win” community fundraising program on Tuesday, February 5th. In an effort to support local community groups that make a big difference in Boerne and surrounding areas, Wheeler’s developed a program that will be a “big win” for all involved. Last year, local groups raised a total of $71,840. The store has partnered with local non-profits and school groups by donating a prize package valued at $5,000 that will be given away upon the program’s ending on April 16th . The prize package includes a custom pair of Lucchese Boots, Yeti Tundra 65 and a $2,500 Wheeler’s Western Outfitters gift card. HOW IT WORKS: Each sponsored group will be selling Wheeler’s Big Win Tickets. Each donation ticket represents a donation of $20 to that group and enters the donor for a chance to win the grand prize. The goal is for each group to raise between $5,000 $10,000 each. Community members have 3 ways to win, when making a

Ninja Warrior, Ashley is the youngest person in the professional division. Wells started in the teen division and quickly got moved up because her times were so fast! “I hope to be able to compete on the TV show this next year as well, once I am old enough to be on the show,” said Ashley. It didn’t take Ashley long to realize the need for a local obstacle course training facility, and being the go-getter that she is she quickly put a plan into action! In December of 2018, NinjaCity opened its doors and has since been offering people of all ages and skill levels the ability to develop skills, build strength, agility, and balance in a fun environment. According to Ashley, “There are a few other similar gyms around the area from Spring Branch to San Antonio, however NinjaCity is the only one that really caters to all ages, from small children all the way up to adults.” “Obstacle training builds self-confidence and self-esteem,” said Wells. “While building physical toughness, participants are also improving their mindset to overcome obstacles inside and outside of the gym. One of the things you can guarantee in Ninja training is failure in completing an obstacle at some time. Through the process of ‘Attempt-Fail-Adapt-Try Again-Overcome’ you learn to achieve things that at one point in your mind you didn’t think was possible. Some of the toughest obstacles we will face in life are those barriers that our minds create and they can hold us back if you don’t learn how to overcome.”

Ninja Warrior training opens up an entire new sport to everyone at all levels of skills and experience. You can grow at your own pace and choose to compete against your own personal best accomplishments or train to compete against others at local, regional and National Competitions. NinjaCity offers classes starting at age five and going all the way up to adults. “Ninja training is a great way to build strength, agility, balance and speed. It works all the muscles of the body and is a great sport on its own, or a wonderful addition when training for other sports as well,” said Ashley. Classes are initially placed by age group and skill level, however students may be moved up based on ability. Each class offers a mixture of balance and strength based ninja warrior obstacles and

takes place on NinjaCity’s practice and timed ninja courses. “Our goal is to provide students with a comprehensive program dedicated to developing healthy athletes through a safe and fun obstacle course experience,” stated Wells. The classes are flexible and hassle free too! No set up or enrollment fee, no long-term commitments and you can participate in unlimited classes every month for your age group. There is even a Drop-In class option available. For those students with a real passion and commitment to move beyond recreational obstacle course training and compete at both a regional and national level, Competition Classes are available as well. NinjaCity is also available for birthday parties, private events and spring break and summer camps. Multiple party packages are available for your guests to get their Ninja on! “We are so thankful for how the Boerne community has already embraced NinjaCity. In just a few short months we already have over 70 students enrolled in classes and our birthday parties were fully booked for the month of February! It is very exciting to see this dream come true and share Ninja training with the local community,” said Wells. In addition to Ashley, there are several other highly qualified instructors at NinjaCity. According to Wells, “Currently on staff are Eli, Christian and Ray. I actually met Eli at a Ninja Warrior competition. Ray is our Manager and Head Coach, and my parents and three younger sisters also help out a lot. On the weekends it is really a family affair here at NinjaCity.” Ashley and her highly qualified team strive to provide the best environment in regards to equipment, safety, coaching and encouragement for everyone to achieve their own personal best. They desire to bring fun, family and fitness to the local community. BBM

Local Boerne Athlete chosen as Texas Male Athlete of the Year

O

On Thursday, February 7th local youth athlete, Noah Blomqvist, age 11, was recognized as the 2018 TAAF State Male Athlete of the Year at the TAAF Hall of Fame Induction and Banquet hosted by the city of The Colony. Noah’s accomplishments began at an early age. In 2013, at the age of 5 years old, he qualified for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior Olympic Games in shot put in the 8-year-old division. He repeated this accomplishment over the next two years despite only being 6 and 7 years old. His accomplishments continued in 2015 when he earned two silver medals at the AAU Primary National Championship. One in the shot put event and the other in the javelin event. In 2016, at the Junior Olympic National Meet in Houston, he received All-American honors by placing eighth in shot put. In 2017 and 2018, he earned the Bronze Medal in Shot put at the AAU Junior Olympic National Meets. His athletic achievements continued in 2018 when he set the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic Regional shot put record. He began his TAAF shot put career with the Hill Country Comets Track Club in 2018 earning a gold medal at the Region 3 meet by demolishing the regional qualifier record by an entire foot. He went on to compete in the 2018 TAAF Games of Texas in Bryan/ College Station, where he once again, took the Gold and tied the state record. He is a fierce competitor and loves track and field events. The TAAF Male Athlete of the Year program is open to athletes across

the state of Texas. Each TAAF member city or affiliate can nominate one athlete each year for the Local Athlete of the Year recognition. Each region then votes on the regional Athlete of the Year. Those regional winners are then submitted to the state level to be voted on for TAAF State Athlete of the year. BBM

City of Boerne to create a Unified Development Code

The City has begun work on the creation of a Unified Development Code (UDC), which will combine the various city ordinances related to development into a single document. This will include zoning regulations and subdivision regulations, as well as procedures and standards related to construction and public works. This project is a major step toward implementing the Boerne Master Plan, which was adopted in 2018.

There are plenty of GOOD REASONS TO PLAN FOR a better tomorrow. Since 1900

UDC is a common term used to indicate the integration of a City’s land regulation ordinances sharing articles of enforcement, process and definitions. By combining the codes, the City can reduce the number of pages, better relate all sets of regulation to assure less contradiction, minimize redundancy and provide a streamlined organizational structure that is much simpler to use. As an outgrowth of the comprehensive planning process, the City will use inputs, recommendations and policies found within the comprehensive plan to guide the UDC project. There will be periodic town hall meetings to provide project updates and focus group meetings to specifically gather community input to the development process. Each chapter of the new UDC will be presented at both Planning and Zoning Commission meetings and City Council meetings to provide adequate orientation to the new structure for development regulations. The City will maintain information about the project on its website throughout the process. Information about upcoming meetings and who to contact will be posted monthly, as well as summaries of events from each month that has passed. Once community input has been gathered and content has been drafted it will also be posted on the City’s website. Conversion to a Unified Development Code is intended to make the development process more efficient in Boerne and to facilitate design oversight and in keeping with community vision. In addition to a change in the structure of these regulations, the City will also be converting to a web-based format, so that the development code is more accessible and user-friendly. Finally, the City will be drafting a Handbook which will serve as an abbreviated and illustrated version of the complete UDC, with sections addressing frequently asked questions, contact information and a summary of the development process in Boerne. For further information please contact Nick A. Colonna, Planning and Community Development Assistant Director at 830.248.1610 or by e-mail at ncolonna@boerne-tx.gov. BBM

Carolyn Chipman Evans, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Cibolo Nature Center & Farm (CNC&F) in Boerne, is a recipient of the 2019 Texas Women in Conservation Terry Hershey Award presented by Audubon Texas. Evans received the award at a luncheon hosted by Travis Audubon Society and Audubon Texas on March 5, 2019 at the Austin Country Club in Austin, TX. “It’s an honor to be among this year’s honorees, all women who have dedicated their lives to conservation and raising awareness around environmental issues that become more timely every day,” said Carolyn Evans. Audubon's Texas Women in Conservation Program debuted in 2015 to honor the role that women play in the conservation field in the Lone Star State and to inspire the next generation of female conservationists. The program includes the annual Audubon Texas Women in Conservation Luncheon featuring The Terry Hershey Awards and Audubon’s Conservation Leaders Program for Young Women. “One would be hard-pressed to find another group of women who have gotten better conservation results in Texas,” said Suzanne Langley, executive director of Audubon Texas. Additional 2019 Hershey Award recipients include the Honorable Valarie Bristol (Conservationist), Susan Kaderka (National Wildlife Federation), and Dianne Wassenich (San Marcos River Foundation). The award’s namesake, Terry Hershey, passed away in 2017 and was a well-known conservationist and philanthropist who invested substantial passion, time, energy, and resources in significant conservation projects in Houston and throughout Texas.

Cibolo Nature Center& Farm Founder Receives Conservation Award Like Ms. Hershey, Carolyn has made nature the focal point of her life’s work for over 30 years. She has a deep love for the Cibolo Creek that her great, great, great grandparents settled on in the 1850’s. Her work began with a handful of friends cleaning up the creek, marshland and prairie. They became the “Friends of the Cibolo Wilderness” and worked to build community, inspire care and create positive action for the environment. In the three decades since its inception, the CNC&F has grown to encompass 160-acres with nature center and historic farm campuses boasting miles of hiking trails, a nature preschool, farmers market and educational programming for both children and adults designed to inspire a connection with nature and conservation. The nature center has become a model for how to create a communitybased nature center that fosters positive environmental action. The CNC&F serves an estimated 100,000 visitors each year and 20,000 children through education program including field trips, camps and a high-quality nature preschool. The Cibolo Creek, the nature center’s namesake, arises from springs on the outskirts of Boerne and runs 100 miles southeast to its confluence with the San Antonio River. Cibolo Creek provides critical recharge for both the Trinity and Edwards aquifers. Beyond providing access to this beautiful creek, the CNC&F also created the Cibolo Conservation Corridor Initiative in 1998 to protect and preserve the Upper Cibolo Creek Watershed. Working in partnership with the Cibolo Preserve, state and municipal agencies and other conservation organizations to protect this watershed, they now have 850 contiguous acres and over 4 miles of the recharge area protected.BBM

H

Having financial goals, developing a strategy, and sticking to a plan are the keys to financial success. Unfortunately, over my 25 years in financial advisory, I’ve seen a lot of situations where people have trouble right out of the starting gate by getting in the way of their own goals. This can happen easily through having preconceived notions about how investments work. These are known, in the investment world, as investment biases. There are many investment biases that can affect achieving your goals. But, below are my top 5 of which to be aware.

COGNITIVE BIAS. People with cognitive bias often share the beliefs of someone else due to their upbringing. For example, if you grew up in a household where your parents only invested in money markets or CDs, you might have a tendency to be just as conservative. On the other hand, if your parents liked to gamble, do you find yourself more willing to make high-stakes investments? Another’s footsteps may not lead down the path that works best for you.

CONFIRMATION BIAS. People with confirmation bias tend to interpret information according to pre-existing beliefs. For example, if someone believes the stock market will be going down in the near future, they’ll tend to look for stories, articles, and interviews that confirm those beliefs. Everyone wants people on their side, so when an individual finds information that agrees with their personal ideas, it validates them. RECENCY BIAS. People with recency bias compare things to recent occurrences,

often ignoring what has happened in the past or what could happen in the future. As an example, think back to when the dot-com bubble burst in 2000 causing the stock market to fall approximately 50%. Then, seven years later during the financial crisis, it fell another 50%. When 2014 rolled around, people thought the stock market would fall again because it had done so in the two previous seven-year cycles. They were looking at something that happened recently instead of at the big picture—what’s happened over the last 100 years, for example. It's no different if something bad happens to us in life, it affects us emotionally, and we may even avoid situations where that same incident might happen again.

HOME BIAS. Home Bias can mean several things.

First, one might be an employee of a company that tends to invest primarily in their company's stock or stocks of similar companies. In other words, the investor is comfortable with that company and therefore thinks they have more knowledge and will be more successful sticking with just a few companies. Another example of home bias is where an investor will invest a large portion of their investments in their own country’s stock or

ACTION BIAS. People with action bias believe they

are adding value when they are doing something. In other words, they may feel they have to trade frequently in order for their portfolio to grow. This can often happen during times where there is a lot of volatility in the stock market like the 4th quarter of 2018. It can serve as a defense mechanism. If I trade more, I can protect my portfolio. However, the most positive results tend to happen when we don’t interfere and instead let compounding take effect over the long term. We have different personalities, different upbringings, different likes and dislikes. But, when it comes to your portfolio, it’s not about any of that. Accomplishing your goals generally comes down to math. Most of your goals will cost a certain amount of money. And, over time, your goals will cost more and more due to inflation. Putting a portfolio together than can grow and withstand the inflationary pressures over the long-term isn’t about how we feel about our portfolio. Sometimes, our feelings and biases can get in the way of the life we want to achieve. BBM
