Eclipse Mania!
EExcitement over the upcoming total solar eclipse is hitting the Texas hill country. This natural phenomena on April 8, 2024 could bring upwards of 50,000 visitors to our town! Planning for this event between the City of Boerne, Kendall County and other local agencies and community partners has been underway for almost two years.
Boerne is in the path of totality for the total solar eclipse, when the moon passes between the earth and the sun. During totality, the moon will completely block out the sun for 4 minutes and 23 seconds beginning at 1:32 p.m. Below is a timeline for the eclipse.
Partial Eclipse Begins: 12:14 p.m.
Totality Begins: 1:32 - 1:36 p.m.
Partial Eclipse Ends: 2:55 p.m.
The 2024 total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico, make it’s way through the United States from Texas to Maine, and finish up at the eastern tip of Canada!
Be sure to visit the City of Boerne’s website to download a one-page Eclipse Guide for Boerne Residents
fun total solar eclipse facts:
This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 7 years!
Solar eclipse can only happen at New Moon.
The average for any one spot on Earth to see a total solar eclipse is about once every 375 years!
During totality, strange things can occur. Nocturnal wildlife sometimes wake up, thinking that it’s nighttime, while non-nocturnal wildlife may think it’s time to sleep!
While Boerne and the hill country are in the path of totality, everyone in the U. S. will be able to see at least a partial eclipse.
WHERE TO VIEW?
Watch the total solar eclipse from the comfort of your own yard, or head out to one of the many viewing parties being hosted by local businesses!
The City of Boerne’s website has a large collection of Viewing Parties & Events or check out the Facebook Group - Solar Eclipse 2024 Texas for festivals, events and accomodations!

First Families of Kendall County
Sponsored by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County (GSKC), The First Families of Kendall County project began in 1999. The purpose of this project is to recognize the living descendants of persons instrumental in founding and settling of the area encompassed by present day Kendall County, Texas and to preserve the history of their families and the county.
To date, 586 applications have been approved for 318 different individuals. One hundred seventy (170) Founders and one hundred four (104) Early Settlers have been documented and recognized. They represent one hundred thirty-five (135) different families in Kendall County. There are two hundred sixty-two (262) volumes of First Families notebooks on the shelves at the Family History Place.
Here we will share with you some of the stories of those First Families who settled this beautiful area of the Texas hill country. We hope you enjoy!
Sby James HurstSamuel Boyd (S. B.) Patton was a "larger than life" individual and the first settler in Curry's Creek. As the Kendall County Historical Commission prepared to erect a historical marker at his gravesite, San Antonio Express-News staff writer, Zeke MacCormack, interviewed Patton's fourth great-grandson, Jim White, who had spent twenty-seven years researching his ancestors. White said, "A portrait of Patton has emerged as orphan-turned-legislator, father of seventeen, an Indian-fighter who helped settle Bastrop, Blanco, and Kendall counites before dying in 1869 at the age of 82."
Born in South Carolina in August of 1787, Patton's father died when he was twelve. According to a biographical sketch written by his son-in-law, Captain John William Sansom, he received no formal education, "He was not educated at a school...but by his mother at her knee. She put him to teaching school when he was sixteen years, then at eighteen years put him to writing in the county clerks office where he remained for several years."
In 1806 at age fifteen, the family moved to Davidson County, Tennessee. When Patton was eighteen, his mother died. He moved to Williamson County, Tennessee, where he married his first wife, Sarah "Sallie" Stephenson. The couple had seven children, whose birth order and dates vary between sources. Patton's wife, Sallie, died about 1828, two years before the 1830 census. Their children were George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Roseanna Jane, Phoebe, Pickens,
and Sarah Matilda.
Patton served during the War of 1812. Records show that Samul B. Patton served in the 3rd Regiment of the East Tennessee Militia, commanded by Colonel William Johnson. He was a private serving under Captain James Stewart. The 3rd Regiment was mustered in Knoxville, and he served from September 1814 until May 1815. This unit of 900 drafted militia, built roads, and were wagon guards. Family lore says that Samuel also served as Captain of a Volunteer Rifle company attached to the 47th Regiment. This is unconfirmed, but the existing records are incomplete.
After the war, Patton moved to Walker County, Alabama, where he received two land grants in 1820. Sallie's last three children were born in Walker County. After her death, Patton married a widow, Elizabeth Dease, in June 1832. Elizabeth had a fifteen-year-old son, Gordon, from her previous marriage. Patton ran for office in the State Legislature in 1834 and served as Walker County's representative from 1834 to 1836.
James Madison Patton and Gordon Dease went to Texas to join the fight against Mexico, and Samuel Boyd Patton followed them in 1837. The move was difficult. The entire family contracted cholera during the journey. Two of his children and several slaves died and were buried near Vicksburg, Mississippi. Family lore also tells they encountered a fierce storm that felled a tree, killing one of the boys.
The family settled in Bastrop County, where on September 4, 1837, Patton became a citizen of the Republic of Texas. Sam Houston appointed him President of the Board of Land Commission and served in the 4th Legislature of the Republic of Texas from 1839 to 1840. Samuel and Elizabeth had three children in Bastrop County, Benjamin Franklin, Charles Alexander, and Helen Victoria.
Patton built the first home at Curry's Creek in Comal County in 1847. When Blanco County was formed, it included Curry's Creek, and Patton was elected its first Chief Justice (County Judge) on April 12, 1858. Afterward, he was always referred to as Judge Patton. When Kendall County was formed in 1862, it included Curry's Creek. Samuel Patton was commissioned Chief Justice of Kendall County on August 22, 1865, and served until 1867. continued on page 18
continued from page 17
Samuel Boyd Patton died March 20, 1869, and was buried in the yard of his Curry’s Creek home. A historical marker was erected there by the Historical Society of Texas and dedicated on September 22, 1996. In the San Antonio Daily News of April 5, 1869, Judge Patton's obituary says that Judge Patton was the father of seventeen children. However, only eleven have been identified, and several may have died young.
Sometime after their move to Texas, Samuel's son Pickens moved to San Marcos in Hays County. During the 1850 census, Samuel, his stepson, Gordon Dease, and his three youngest children lived in Pickens's household. The Honorable Samuel Boyd Patton told the census enumerator that he was a carpenter, and so did Gordon. One could speculate that they lived with Pickens to help him build his home. BBM

“Das GreenHaus offers incredible opportunities for new and young businesses. Not only do they offer training for business leaders but also the chance to work with other entrepreneurs. It is truly a small community working together to make dreams come true.”
– Shan Wiley, Boerne RadioGGrowth happens best in the right environment. Be it plants, people, or even small businesses, this statement rings true! It was this philosophy that led to the formation of Das GreenHaus, a local business incubator.
“Kendall County is an entrepreneurial community, this is part of our local culture and it’s an important element in what makes this area so special,” said Amy Story, President/ CEO of Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation and Das GreenHaus Board Member. “94% of
our local businesses have less than twenty employees. They are generational businesses, small partnerships and sole proprietors. Das GreenHaus is a collaborative effort of local businesses and organizations with the goal to build on this. We want to support start-ups and new entrepreneurs and help them build successful business right here in our community.”
Das GreenHaus launched through a collaboration between the Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation and the Boerne Kendall County Angel Network. It is a 501(c)(3) public-private non-profit whose mission BEC
“I was introduced to Das GreenHaus in October and it has been the perfect fit for my business needs. It serves as a remote drop-in workspace and it’s now the meeting location for my women’s business group, LEAD 830. The conference room is an ideal set up for meetings or training sessions. Das GreenHaus is just what Boerne needed - a space for aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs to learn, grow and connect with others. ” –
TammyJordan, Lead 830
“Kathy Estes was one of the founders of Das GreenHaus and worked tirelessly to launch the project. She recently retired as the Board President, but what many people don’t know is that when the doors opened in June, she served as the volunteer full-time Program Director and sole staff member at the space. Kathy devoted hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours to this project because she believed it would be a vehicle to support entrepreneurs and founders for years to come in our community. We are so thankful to Kathy and her commitment to Das Greenhaus, she is a huge part of its success.”

is to foster the community of innovators to grow Kendall County’s entrepreneurial vision. According to Kathy Estes, former Das GreenHaus Board President, “A lot of time and effort was put into round table discussions with local businesses, citizens and organizations. We worked with the IC2 Institute and they provided data that matched that of the round table discussions. The common denominator was that Kendall County needed a resource to help our new and existing startups. We looked at what other communities were doing, and tailored Das GreenHaus to fit the needs of Kendall County. What was developed was an environment that connects entrepreneurs to the resources and mentors they need to thrive.”
Das GreenHaus is open to anyone who has an idea they would like to pursue. It offers access to affordable workspaces, as well as every imaginable resource you need to learn how to become a successful entrepreneur. For their members they provided educational workshops, access to mentors and coaches, and community networking. They will provide assistance in business structure, market research, writing a business plan, registering your business, information on business financing and accounting practices, insurance and licensing and permits.
“Studies show that 84 percent of new businesses that go through an incubator program are more successful,” said Estes. “The
mission of Das GreenHaus is to provide our new local businesses with resources and contacts within the community so they will not only succeed, but keep their business here. When you start your own business, you’re investing in more than just your company; you’re also investing in the future of your community. Kendall County will flourish when it can rely on a network of thriving entrepreneurs. The goal is to offer an opportunity for Kendall County talent to bring their dreams to fruition while having the ability to grow their business in their hometown.”
According to Story, “One of the community challenges we see from an economic development standpoint is how do we keep our kids here? With Das GreenHaus, we have an initiative to work with the local schools through finding internships and partnering with the Incubator.edu program. We provide space where they can meet and work with their coaches. When the students are here they bring a very cool energy to the space. They get to experience real business situations and have conversations with our entrepreneurs. Showing our kids that it is possible to build your business and dreams right here in their hometown is so beneficial to the future of Kendall County.”
Das GreenHaus has seen exceptional response from local entrepreneurs since they opened their doors. All of the private offices are currently full and their Idea-2-Market Entrepreneur Progam currently has twenty participants. They also offer a 12-week Business Accelerator Program. In addition to the private offices, Das GreenHaus offers access to meeting rooms, shared workspace areas and lounge areas. “What’s really great is watching the entrepreneurial ecosystem take hold in our co-working and common areas,” said Justin McKenzie, President, Boerne Kendall County Angel Network and Das GreenHaus Board Member. “There is such value in having a peer group that our members can relate to, bounce ideas off of, assist each other in finding solutions together, and celebrating each others’ successes.”
Want to get involved? Das GreenHaus has multiple levels of memberships for new and existing entrepreneurs. They are also always looking for established business leaders to provide guidance to a rising generation of local entrepreneurs.

Boerne ISD Named 2024 Innovative District
TThe Center for Model Schools (CMS), formerly the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE), has named the Boerne Independent School District a 2024 Innovative District for their systemwide focus on instruction and organization structures to increase student growth with College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR). Boerne ISD team leaders worked relentlessly to develop a vision focused on the needs of their students and community.
Boerne ISD is one of only 12 Innovative Districts from across the United States that will share its best practices at CMS’s 32nd Annual Model Schools Conference. The event provides a professional learning forum for thousands of passionate educators and leaders to network together and support one another. BISD’s presentation, titled “(Raising the Bar with CCMR)”, will be led by Chief Instructional Officer Larissa Flores, along with Career & Technical Education Director Heather Willis, Advanced Academics Director Cindy Bills, BHS Principal Shane Wilson and CHS Principal Dr. Beto Hinojosa.
The Boerne team will be sharing details on the success of CCMR district initiatives and how the implementation of these initiatives have led to a 15% increase from 2022 to 2023.
“Innovative Districts are strategic about decision making and are purpose driven” says Dr. Linda Lucey, Program Chair and CMS Associate Partner. “Each of the 2024 Innovative Districts have leadership teams continuously focused on developing cultures of success.”
Selected annually based on rigorous criteria, Innovative Districts have evidence of growth year over year; aligned vision and structures; and are intentional about instructional decisions.
“Moving a system forward for progress in challenging circumstances is hard, exhausting work.” says Dr. Lucey. “The hard work has paid off with this group of inspiring leaders. We are proud to have the opportunity to learn from them and celebrate their success with them.”

Adult
HHaving trouble paying attention these days? You’re not alone. Many things in modern culture zap our attention, like multi-tasking, social media, and stress. In fact, the average adult attention span has been decreasing over time as modern life has become more hectic. Plus, most of us carry the internet in our pockets, with unlimited content just a click away! Beyond the usual distractions, some adults may have undiagnosed ADHD/ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder, with or without Hyperactivity. In the past, ADHD has been considered a childhood disorder, that children ‘grew out of’ as they matured. About half of them do. We now see that the other half of children with ADHD continue to have problems as adults. ADHD is a strongly genetic neurodevelopmental disorder. It can also be caused by fetal exposure to toxins, infections, or alcohol during pregnancy. It does not just cause problems with attention, however. ADHD actually impairs a larger group of mental skills that make up executive functioning. These mental abilities help us to get things done in our lives. Executive functioning includes working memory, where we think about, remember, and use information during a usual day. It also includes mental flexibility, which allows us to cope with and manage the unexpected. Inhibition control, a third aspect of executive functioning, allows us to control thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Those with untreated ADHD can have trouble in all of these areas.
Rethinking ADHD for Adults
Such problems can increase the risk for the following:
• Relationship problems
• Impulsive spending
• Trouble managing finances
• Substance use disorders
• Impulsive or binge eating
• Reckless driving and auto accidents
• Poor judgement or impulsivity leading to legal problems
• Poor work performance, trouble keeping a job or getting promoted
• Trouble completing work training or academic degrees
While many adults have problems with attention and focus, ADHD is not always the culprit. For example, common medical conditions can also cause attention problems. These include vitamin deficiencies, anemia, hypothyroidism, seizures, autoimmune disorders, unregulated blood sugar or diabetes, and other physical issues. Plus, if you had COVID-19, you may have continued mental fog, memory troubles, or word finding problems. Sleep deprivation and untreated sleep apnea can also cause trouble with focus. Additionally, other types of psychological problems can affect attention. Untreated depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, trauma symptoms, and other mental health issues can all cause problems with focus.
Besides “disorders,” the regular stressors of daily life can also worsen our attention and focus. Dealing with excessive life demands, trying to do too many things at once, and letting ourselves get run down, can cause focus problems and feelings of overwhelm.
Here are some general tips for improving attention:
• Take regular breaks from challenging tasks
• Move your body more, even for small periods of time
• Try “mono-tasking”: do one thing at a time
• Maintain your physical comfort: Get enough sleep, stay hydrated, eat when hungry

SPORTS MEDICINE ISN’T
WWhen most people hear the term “sports medicine,” they usually visualize medical treatment that’s reserved for elite, hard-training athletes. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.
Sports medicine focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions involving the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints. You don’t have to be a marathon runner to suffer from such injuries. Stress from repetitive use or even an injury caused by a fall can be treated by a sports medicine professional.
There are two basic categories of injuries treated in sports medicine care. The first involves acute injury and the second involves damage caused by wear and tear and disorders such as arthritis that tend to develop gradually.
Sports medicine professionals can help patients with these symptoms:
Joint and muscle pain
Bone fractures
Foot pain
Ankle injury
Overuse injury
Joint dislocation
Muscle fatigue
Sudden, non-emergency injuries
Getting Back Into the Game
FOR ATHLETES
The Orthopedic Performance Institute’s Dr. Alexandra Matthews specializes in non-surgical treatment of these injuries, which helps to get patients “back into play” quickly and with less trauma. This is accomplished by utilizing techniques such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, in which the patient’s own blood is utilized to speed up the healing process. There are also nerve block injections that can block the pain for up to 90 days.
Diagnostic ultrasound is another way the doctor can identify the injury and begin treatment quickly. The Orthopedic Performance Institute utilizes the most modern techniques.
If it is determined that a patient’s condition requires surgery, Dr. Matthews can refer them to an orthopedic surgeon whose knowledge and experience is appropriate to treat the condition.
Avoiding Injury
She also counsels patients on injury avoidance. This is accomplished by instructing them how to train correctly and wear the appropriate gear and footwear. Good nutrition plays an important part, too, as it’s vital to keep bones and muscles strong. Patients aged six years and up are welcome.
Don’t keep living with unnecessary pain. Contact the Orthopedic Performance Institute in San Antonio or Boerne at (210) 545-7171 for an appointment today.

When should you take Social Security?
One of your important sources of retirement income will likely be Social Security — but when should you start taking it?
You can start collecting Social Security benefits at 62, but your checks will be considerably bigger if you wait until your full retirement age, which is likely between 66 and 67. You could even wait until you’re 70, at which point the payments will max out, except for yearly cost-of-living adjustments. But if you need the money, you need the money, even if you’re just 62 or any age before full retirement age.
However, if you have adequate financial resources to meet your monthly needs, whether through earned income, your investment portfolio or a combination of the two, you could have some flexibility in choosing when to take Social Security. In this case, you may want to weigh these considerations:
Life expectancy – For all of us, it’s one of life’s great mysteries: How long will we live? Of course, we can’t see into the future, so the question can’t be answered with total confidence. But to make an informed decision on when to take Social Security, you don’t need to know your exact lifespan — you just need to make a reasonably good estimate. So, for example, if you’re approaching 62, you’re enjoying excellent health and you have a family history of longevity, you might conclude it’s worth waiting a few years to collect Social Security, so you can receive the bigger payments. Conversely, if your health is questionable and your family has not been fortunate in terms of longevity, you might want to start taking your benefits earlier.
Employment – You can certainly continue working and still receive Social Security benefits. However, if you’re under your full retirement age for the entire year, Social Security will deduct $1 from your benefits for every $2 you earn above the annual limit of $22,320. In the year you reach your full retirement age, Social Security will deduct $1 in benefits for every $3 you earn above $59,520. So, you may want to keep these reductions in mind when deciding when to begin accepting benefits. Once you reach your full retirement age, you can earn any amount without losing benefits. (Also, at your full retirement age, Social Security will recalculate your benefit amount to credit you for the months you received reduced benefits because of your excess earnings.)
Spouse – Spouses can receive two types of Social Security benefits: spousal and sur-
vivor. With a spousal benefit, your spouse can receive up to 50% of your full retirement benefits, regardless of when you start taking them. (Your spouse’s benefit can be reduced by the amount of their own retirement benefit and whether they took Social Security before their full retirement age.) But with a survivor benefit, your decision about when to take Social Security can make a big difference. A surviving spouse can receive the larger of their own benefit or 100% of a deceased spouse’s benefit, so if you take benefits early and receive a permanent reduction, your spouse’s survivor benefit may also be reduced for their lifetime.
When to take Social Security is an important — and irrevocable — decision. So, consider all the factors before making your choice.
GET YOUR HOME
Spring Ready
SSpring has always offered a sense of renewal. The flowers start to bloom, the temperatures make it bearable to be outside again and there’s an energy we often lack in the dreary days of winter. It’s time to start making plans to get your home ready for Spring; from little projects for the weekend to those bigger ones that you’ve put off long enough.
CHECK YOUR IRRIGATION SYSTEM
Who wants to mess with faulty sprinkler heads or pesky leaks when you need to get your lawn watered? You can check each zone easily and even change out the heads yourself. Your local hardware stores carry irrigation system supplies. If you find this sort of thing way out of your handyman comfort zone, reach out to a local irrigation company and they will happily come by and service the system for you.
ROOF & GUTTERS
Clear debris from your roof and check for any areas that may need some repair. It’s time to check your gutters for leaves and other debris that build up over the late fall and winter. Keeping gutters clean helps save fascia boards from rotting and helps to keep water flowing through the down spouts versus anywhere it’s not supposed to go.
WEATHER STRIPPING ON DOORS AND WINDOWS
Over time, weather stripping becomes brittle and falls apart, allowing the air we pay for out and the outside air in. Working on the weather stripping now means you won’t have to change it in the summer when opening a window cost smore because of escaping cool AC air.
HVAC CHECK UP
Spring is a great time to get your AC system a checkup to ensure that it’s ready for the hot summer months to come. Don’t forget to change your filters, too. It’s recommended to change your HVAC filter quarterly, especially after the pollen laden months of January and February and the months when we’re cooped up inside and running our heat more than usual. Changing filter regularly keeps your system running more efficiently and helps keep dust and pollen down.
REVERSE CEILING FANS
It’s time to turn those ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise to push air down. Ceiling fans can cool a room by 4 degrees but remember to turn them off when you leave, or no one gets the benefit of the cooler air.
If you find yourself in need of a home professional, please give us a call. We’ve got a wonderful resource guide to help you find a roofer, a landscaper, or a handyman to save you from a ‘honey-do’ list. If you are thinking of selling your home this spring, please reach out to a Real Estate Professional. It’s never a good idea to go it alone.
