Sharing the Holiday Magic!

This is the time of year when the days, weeks, and months pass by much too quickly. We get so busy with our children’s or our own school activities, work obligations, community and charitable events, and of course holiday preparations. Maybe you will be traveling to see family; maybe you will stay right here and be part of Boerne’s holiday scene; or perhaps you have a much needed vacation planned. Whatever you do and wherever you are, Carol and I hope you enjoy a bountiful Thanksgiving and a magical Christmas. Congratulations to the Boerne Performing Arts team for bringing another fantastic show to Boerne. The VocaPeople show last month was an amazing mash-up of rhythm, harmony, physicality, and fun. The 2015 season, which includes performances by the Canadian Brass, the New Shanghai Circus, and Neil Berg’s 102 Years of Broadway, will no doubt be just as exciting. I understand there are still lots of individual show tickets, as well as season packages, available – these could make a great gift for someone on your holiday shopping list. One of the biggest November highlights will be the grand reopening and dedication of Veterans Park and the renovated plaza and memorial beginning at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11. The new Walk of Honor is a tremendous addition to this hallowed ground. It is truly an honor to participate in this community demonstration of gratitude for the sacrifices that our military families make. There are not enough words to truly convey how much their contributions and sacrifices have shaped not only our own country but thousands of communities around the world. I encourage everyone to show your thanks to our heroes that have served and are currently serving in all branches of our military. Those of us who have not been in their shoes, including me, can’t truly appreciate their work or the lingering effects from their experiences. While we hold ceremonies each Veterans Day, I believe we should celebrate our veterans and active military families for their dedication to freedom every day of the year. Carol and I will once again welcome a group of young Air Force trainees to Boerne for the annual Thanksgiving feast provided for them by Paul Thompson and Tom and Shanda Stevens, owners of the Cypress Grille. This is the seventh year in a row they have hosted these young men and women who can’t

be with their families at Thanksgiving. It is such a blessing to live and work among community leaders that are so giving. Once the Thanksgiving leftovers are put away, I encourage you to make plans to stroll along the Hill Country Mile to enjoy the “Dickens on Main” festivities November 28 and 29. Dickens on Main activities, including ice sculpting, concert performances, holiday shopping, and the popular “A Christmas Carol” performance, will take place on Friday and Saturday – Main Street will close to traffic at 5 p.m. each day. The tree lighting ceremony at Main Plaza will occur Friday evening at 6pm. The annual Weihnacht parade will be the following Saturday, December 6. Many local folks, including city staff, have worked for months to make these wonderful holiday events happen. We are especially grateful to all of the business sponsors that are providing their financial support. We hope to see you there! As we start facing the coldest days of the year, and what is often a very challenging season for some in Boerne, I encourage you to be a good neighbor to people in our community. There are families in our midst that could use a helping hand, and there are many organizations that are dedicated to providing them assistance. There are volunteer opportunities, canned food and toy drives, utility assistance programs, and more. City of Boerne Utilities accepts cash donations to the Good Neighbor Fund all year long. By simply adding a little extra when you pay your Boerne utility bill you are helping a neighbor keep their electricity on and their water running. All contributions are given to Hill Country Family Services for distribution to their clients based on demonstrated need. I know many of you volunteer your time not just during the holidays, but throughout the entire year, to support those families in our area that need help. Showing your compassion by sharing your time and resources with others makes our community stronger. As we get wrapped up with those “to do” lists, I hope we all remember to take a moment to be thankful for our many blessings and to enjoy the magic of the holidays here in Boerne or where ever your travels take you. Hand selected shops will come together for one day on Thursday, November 13 at the Ye Kendall Inn Ballroom to provide the best Christmas shopping experience in the Hill Country. This second annual event has expanded with more vendors and extended daytime hours. The event is open 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. and will feature twenty-four diverse vendors. One of the program coordinators, Catherine Davis said, “We worked really hard to find vendors from all different categories so that shoppers can find a gift for everyone on their list. Every vendor is someone that we would want to buy from. Our goal is that shoppers walk away looking forward to coming back next year.” Besides great shopping the event will feature complimentary drinks and light appetizers, and a ticket to the event will give shoppers 20% off on the event day at Limestone Grille, Ye Kendall Inn’s premier restaurant. “One stop shopping, fun with your girlfriends all wrapped in an event that benefits a great organization. Put this one on your calendar!,” said Holly DeLaune, Event Coordinator. Pre-sale tickets can be found at local establishments Wheeler’s, Freedom Cup, The Shoppe, Fiddlin’ Frogs and The Christmas Shoppe for $20. Tickets will be $25 at the door. All of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Boerne Young Life and help send Boerne teens to camp this summer. “Camp is so important because it gives students a chance to be out of their normal surroundings. They are able to process what they are hearing and experiencing. They are given the freedom to make their own decisions about the Gospel,” says Danny Williams, Area Director for Young Life in Boerne.

BISD Board Reviews Design of New Fabra Elementary
T
The Boerne ISD Board of Trustees reviewed schematic design plans for the new Fabra Elementary campus at its regular monthly meeting Monday, October 20. At the same meeting, the board reviewed schematic design plans for a second phase of new construction and renovation at Boerne High School. The project, budgeted for $3.75 million, includes two new science classrooms, two art rooms, an expansion of the cafeteria, and renovations to the athletics facilities, including the competition and auxiliary gyms. The new, 90,000-square-foot Fabra school is being built on 19.6 acres at the corner of Johns Road and Lattimore in Boerne, approximately one mile from the current elementary campus. The existing school dates back to 1948 and will be repurposed for administrative uses once the new campus opens in the fall of 2016. The new school will accommodate 800 students, kindergarten through fifth grade. That is an increase in capacity of approximately 200 students over the current campus on Lohmann Street. The proposed design will include

“learning communities� incorporating traditional classrooms clustered around shared spaces that teachers can access for expanded instruction and special projects. A state-of-the-art library and the latest educational technology also will be part of the new campus. BISD officials anticipate that the new Fabra design will serve as a prototype for the next generation of elementary schools the district will build as the population of Kendall County and Boerne ISD continues to expand. Both the Fabra project and the Boerne High School projects are part of the $99.5 million bond package passed by voters in the May 2013 election. Boerne ISD assistant superintendent for budget and finance, Bruce Revell, has been selected by the San Antonio Business Journal as one of 10 honorees in the publication’s 5th Annual Best CFO Awards program. Honorees were selected based on their fiscal leadership, diligent management and the positive impact they have on their companies and organizations, according to information released by the Journal. The publication highlighted the honorees in a special issue on October 24. Among the 10 honorees, Revell was the only award recipient representing the field of education. Revell joined Boerne ISD in 2007. Under Revell’s leadership, the district has consistently received top ratings from the Texas Education Agency under its Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. Prior to his arrival in Boerne, Revell served as CFO for the Ector County ISD in Odessa. He holds a degree in accounting from Howard Payne University. BBM

Omega 3 vs. Omega 6
WHICH ONE IS BEST FOR ME?

In recent years on the web, blogs, peer reviewed journals, and magazines, a current trending health topic is on ‘Good Fats’ and ‘Bad Fats’. Ultimately, wherever you read, each discussion has Fish Oils as its common interest. While Fish Oils have great benefits to health and wellness, many sources do not take the time to investigate Omega 3 versus Omega 6. Which one does YOUR body need? To best answer this question, we should dig a little bit into biochemistry and what roles Omegas play in the body. Don’t worry, this is just a brief rundown; there will be no pop quiz at the end! It’s my hope that through this bit of information, you learn something beneficial to you and your health. OMEGA 3 AND 6 Omega 3 is essential to humans, meaning our bodies cannot make it. We must ingest food sources that contain omega 3's. There are three types of omegas: ALA, EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA are the most important since our bodies readily absorb and utilize them. They also contain the most benefit to our bodies from a nutritional standpoint. The best foods that contain adequate amounts of EPA and DHA are: cold water salmon and krill oil. ALA is found in plantbased diets such as flaxseed, chia, hemp etc. There is no harm in supplementing with a plant based omega 3, however it’s not as efficient for the body to use. Omega 6 is another type of essential fatty acid that humans need. However, the typical American diet consists of foods that are saturated in Omega 6. Foods such as corn, soy and sunflower oil are consumed at high levels and all contain Omega 6 which promotes inflammation.

BALANCE Omega 6 triggers MORE INFLAMMATION while omega 3 promotes LESS INFLAMMATION. Ideally there should be a balance between the two; a 1:1 ratio is acceptable. Due to an inflammatory diet, today's ratios typically range between 20:1 and 50:1 with Omega 6 being higher than 3. Higher omega 6 encourages inflammation in the body, which can lead to heart disease, premature aging and many more preventable diseases. The importance of fatty acids does not stop here. Omega fatty acids happen to be the building blocks of our nerves and brain matter. Omegas organize and form a sheath around your nerves. This sheath acts like an insulator for the electrical impulses that travel from brain to tissue cells and back. If you or your children are not getting enough omega 3's from your diet, you may consider a high quality Omega 3 supplement. We recommend supplements that are made from sustainable resources, pollution free, and pharmaceutical grade. To wrap it up here, Omega 3’s are very important for suppressing inflammation and repair of the nervous system. A high quality supplement can help restore balance. Founded in 2003 by Mary Jimenez, TTS Research began as a small company that aimed to bring education to people with existing health conditions and provide them with stateof-the-art medicine. From the beginning, Jimenez worked with Dr. Richard Martinez, and
Dr. David Fuentes. As time went on, the three developed a comfort level with one another and in 2009 they incorporated TTS Research and developed a partnership. According to Jimenez, who is TTS Research’s Clinical Director of Research, “Every medicine and medical device must be tested before it can be marketed. Some of the studies we do here are for medical devices, some are comparative where we compare drugs and others are novel studies in which we

are trying out a brand new drug. Studies can last anywhere from a few months to five years.” TTS Research seeks for qualifying patients for their medical trials through several different avenues that include physician referral, advertising, word of mouth and even a very large database that includes over 8,000 potential research subjects. “Our trials are heavily regulated by the FDA. Anyone who has an existing condition that we are conducting a trial for can come into our facility to be screened to see if they are a possible candidate for the study,” said Dr. Fuentes. “Patients only qualify for a study maybe half of the time, but there is great benefit in even being screened for the trial. During the screening process, patients receive a variety of tests such as lab tests, CT scans, x-rays and ekg’s for free. In many cases, these are tests that the patients might not have had access to otherwise and in the event that they do not qualify for the trial they may still receive care at our clinics,” he added. Patients who do qualify for the trials are not only compensated for their time and travel but receive many other benefits as well. “We provide counseling and education, they are encouraged to address and work on any weight issues that they might have. Patients also track their symptoms at home with a diary and perform quality of life assessments. The design of the studies really allows the patients to gain a better understanding of their disease process,” said Jimenez. Once the trial is over, TTS Research is obligated to encourage the patients to continue to get good care and get back into the health care system. TTS Research’s focus is largely around chronic diseases and a concentrated effort in respiratory conditions. Dr. Fuentes stated, “Our research has largely been designed around the Boerne population and developed according to the needs of the town.”
The doctors and staff at TTS Research are known for such great research that they have recently qualified for state-of-the-art trials and have also been granted access to biological trials. “We are very excited about the biological trials, this is really the future of medicine,” state Jimenez. Not only is their research superb, but the new TTS Research facility is truly impressive as well. The property for their new facility, located at 1420 River Road (across from the Kendall County Fairgrounds) in Boerne, was purchased in 2010 and they began building their new facility in 2013. “We just recently moved into our new facility in July of this year and are so excited about all that it has to offer for our patients. The building was designed for research, many universities may not even have what we have in this new building,” Jimenez said enthusiastically! The new facility features controlled lab areas, a drug room that is password protected and temperature controlled, 6 exam rooms and a lounge area for patients. Still to be completed is a lush and relaxing garden area for patients to enjoy as well as a large area upstairs that will be designed for overnight studies. Dr. Fuentes and Dr. Martinez both have their practices on-site as well. “This is the only free standing clinical research site in Kendall County and there are only a handful in San Antonio. TTS Research is something that is very unique in this area,” said Dr. Fuentes. Mary Jimenez added, “This is a hard job, but it really is the best job in the world! We see so many patients that have a significant improvement in their quality of life, both personally and professionally, and that is what this is all about. Some of our patients are so critically ill and to be able to help them change their lives is more rewarding than I could ever express.”BBM

Well the City of Boerne, the Boerne Chamber of Commerce, the Boerne Independent School District and the Boerne/Kendall County Economic Development Corporation have teamed up to teach young entrepreneurs the fun and valuable lessons about starting, owning and operating a business – a lemonade stand! That’s right, this spring lemonade stands will be taking over Boerne in a big way! On Lemonade Day, May 3, 2015, these lemonade stands will become the toast of the town with a community-wide celebration focused on our youth, their future and their business opportunities. Isn’t this the American dream? Lemonade Day is a nation-wide event that teaches kids the skills they need to be successful in life. Kids learn to set goals, develop a business plan, establish a budget, seek investors, provide customer service, save for the future, and give back to the community. Lemonade Day Boerne is the perfect opportunity for our community to show kids they care and train the next generation of entrepreneurs through a free, fun, engaging, and empowering activity. Students can register for Lemonade Day beginning in January 2015. Registered students will receive a backpack with an informational workbook that outlines the steps needed to start a business: from setting a goal, creating a business plan, forming a budget, finding an investor, to saving money, and donating a portion back to their community. Classes will be held, but are optional, during
the spring for students to learn more about creating and operating their own business. Youth of all ages, from pre-K through high school, can register to set up an official Lemonade Day stand. However, we encourage students third through sixth grade to participate. In order for Lemonade Day Boerne to be a success, the Boerne business community is being asked to participate by sponsoring Lemonade Day Boerne, offering location sites for Lemonade Day booths, becoming investors, mentoring and, of course, buying lemonade from these budding entrepreneurs on Lemonade Day! Lemonade Day Boerne is much broader than just one individual child selling lemonade from his or her stand. It’s a process that gets the whole community focused long term on investing in our youth and teaching them about business. It also invests in the future of our youth by teaching them how to create their own jobs instead of just looking for a job. When local businesses get involved, they are teaching our youth how to become more like them - business owners and operators! Three different levels of sponsorships are available. Sponsorship commitments are needed by December 15, 2014 in order to make the printing deadline for the backpacks. However, don’t wait until the last minute, the sooner you commit to support Lemonade Day Boerne, the sooner your business starts being advertised as a sponsor! All monies received in excess of expenses incurred will go straight to area youth in the form of college scholarships. BBM

If you’re a smart small business owner, you’ve taken the necessary precautions to secure your business. You’ve probably invested in an alarm system, you’ve most likely purchased fire and flood insurance and you may even have hired patrolling security. At the very least, you lock your front door each night. But have you looked inside your business lately? Businesses suffer tremendous financial losses each year as a result of fraud. With so much money on the line, it’s imperative to take steps to prevent small business fraud. 1. HIRE THE RIGHT EMPLOYEES. For starters, hire the right employees. Thoroughly screen applicants and check past employment, personal and professional references and criminal records. 2. SEPARATE ACCOUNTING DUTIES. In a small business, people often wear many hats. Avoid having the same person open mail, process payments, make bank deposits, pay invoices, handle petty cash and reconcile bank statements. Also, make sure that different employees place and approve purchases. 3. HAVE BANK STATEMENTS MAILED TO YOUR HOME OR POST OFFICE BOX. Review your bank statements before your bookkeeper does. Look for missing checks, checks that are out of order, checks written to suppliers or people you don’t know and checks made out to a third party but endorsed by a company employee.

4. ARRANGE FOR SURPRISE AUDITS. Bring in your CPA once a year, at different times, to conduct a surprise audit of your business’ financial records. OFFERING CONVENIENT REAL ESTATE EDUCATION RIGHT HERE IN BOERNE

Have you ever thought about pursuing a career in real estate? The idea of a flexible career that allows you the freedom to set your own schedule, be your own boss and has the possibility for high earning potential is something that appeals to many people. Real estate can be an exciting career choice and now you can attend classes to obtain your license right here in Boerne at the Real Estate Classes Institute, LLC! RECI can answer your questions about what it takes to become a licensed real estate agent and help you to decide if that is a good career path for you. Once you have decided, they offer everything from pre-licensure classes to continuing education (MCE) classes and do so in smaller, fun classes that allow for a more one-on-one student instructor ratio, which they believe lends to the school’s 100% pass rate. According to a RECI spokesperson, “Our instructors are not allowed to just read from the book. They must present interesting and informative course material in a relaxed classroom setting that encourages student interaction. We have a lot of fun and challenge one another.” A typical class at RECI ranges from 5 to 10 students per instructor for a 30-hour weekend core course. Continuing Education (MCE) classes can be much larger and are often held at different brokerage offices upon request. Smaller MCE classes are held at their Boerne campus every first and second Wednesday of the month. Online classes are also available on their website, www.TxRECI.com. Prior to opening, RECI was required by the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) to obtain a license and meet high standards of operation. Not only must the school adhere to specific & rigorous licensing regulations, but the courses must be taught by TREC approved and licensed instructors. The curriculum and every course must be submitted and approved by TREC. “RECI wanted to raise

the bar in our industry by having very knowledgeable students heading to the TREC test center to obtain their real estate licenses. Our school goes above and beyond by requiring that all instructors have experience as a licensed Realtor with the National Association of Realtors and also must have attended Instructor Training Institute (ITI) through Texas Association of Realtors,” added RECI’s spokesperson. “The students want to build a book of business and it just makes sense to have instructors who are actually experienced in the field they are teaching.” RECI’s school calendar allows for a series of core classes rotated every other week. These classes are offered as weekend courses that consist of classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. According to RECI’s Lead Instructor, Naomi Weckesser, “Most of the inquiring students indicated they could arrange to take off work on Fridays and already typically had Saturday and Sunday off from work. So, the school naturally wanted to accommodate the student’s schedule. This way, students can easily complete one of their required courses in just one weekend.” The lead instructor submits a summer and fall calendar to RECI for the core classes that are needed for pre-licensure. If enough students are interested in evening classes those can also be arranged. If you are wanting to obtain a license, remember that TREC requires six specific courses for a total of 180 class hours before a student can sit for a license exam. Students may achieve these hours through classroom courses, online classes or a combination of both. By utilizing the RECI website, www.TXRECI.com, distance learning is an option for the online provider courses (with a discount). As RECI continues to grow they strive to be able to develop more MCE courses for a variety of options! “We currently have lots of requests from licensed Realtors to add ‘lively’ elective MCE courses for experienced agents”. To that end, RECI has recently published a brand new one-hour elective course “Recovering From A Slump” which is the first in an exciting three-part series. Next they just need to match a qualified instructor to the course and schedule it on the school calendar. RECI is also reviewing courses authored by others and hope to add those to the curriculum as time permits. TEXAS HOUSING MARKET ON TRACK FOR SECOND BEST YEAR EVER

This year will end as the second best year ever in Texas in terms of existing home sales, said a housing market expert with the Real Estate Center. “Last year was the second best year ever in the state of Texas for home sales volume,” said Center Research Economist Dr. Jim Gaines. “It was second only to 2006, which was at the height of the housing boom and all the easy financing. And 2013 wasn’t that far off from that. This is going to become the new second best year ever. We are having a really terrific year.” The latest Multiple Listing Service (MLS) data show that sales of existing single-family homes in Texas were 7 percent higher last month than in September 2013. About 24,640 homes were sold last month, over 1,600 more than the same month last year, but almost 2,800 less than in August. Gaines said the Augustto-September downturn is the normal seasonal falloff. So far this year, 217,690 homes have been sold, about 1 percent more than this time last year. “We’re getting exactly what we thought we were going to get, and that’s a slowdown in the rate of increase,” Gaines said. “Last year sales went up about 16 percent. It was a big, big jump. This year it’s a little jump. Home prices are doing a very similar kind of thing. There’s been a step-up in prices the last five years, and we’re still seeing that step up. But the rise of the step isn’t quite as high.
“As our prices have been going up progressively here in Texas, incomes really haven’t been going up at the same pace percentage-wise. Home prices going up faster than income means that ultimately affordability and what people can afford to pay becomes an issue.” Gaines said homebuyers getting hit the hardest are those on the lower end of the home-price spectrum. “Very few homebuilders are building homes under $200,000 or $250,000 in most of our markets,” he said. “So there’s no increase in supply on that low-priced end.” In addition, credit tightness is affecting first-time buyers and first-time move-up buyers much harder than older buyers at higher income levels. “The good news for Texas is that our prosperity is, in general, still continuing,” Gaines said. “On the horizon, it appears that it will continue. The only cloud on that horizon is what’s happening in the energy sector. In the last couple of weeks, the price of oil has dropped appreciably. When the trend is downward in the price of oil, you start looking ahead and saying ‘okay, just how far can this trend go before it really becomes a problem?’ Right now it doesn’t appear to be, but it’s one of those things we’ve got to keep our eye on.” For more of Gaines’ housing market insights listen to the Real Estate Red Zone podcast. PUMPKIN AND VANILLA PUDDING COMBINE INTO A DECADENT FLUFF ATOP A CRUST OF GOLDEN OREOS. TOP THAT OFF WITH A SPRINKLE OF NUT TOPPING AND GROUND CINNAMON AND YOU HAVE A THANKSGIVING DESSERT THAT THE WHOLE FAMILY WILL LOVE! INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup canned pumpkin 2 boxes of instant vanilla pudding (3.4 oz. / box) 3 cups whipped topping 2 1/2 cups cold milk approx. 25 golden Oreos (2 sleeves from an Oreo package) 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup powdered sugar ground cinnamon and nut topping for garnish
8 - Pour and smooth on top of Oreo crust. 9 - In another bowl, beat remaining box of pudding mix, 2 cups of cool whip and 1 cup of milk together until smooth. 10 - Slowly beat in powdered sugar and vanilla until fluffy. 11 - Layer on top of the middle layer of the dessert. 12 - Garnish with nut topping and ground cinnamon 13 - Refrigerate for 2-3 hours before serving. DIRECTIONS 1 - Preheat oven to 350 degrees. 2 - For the crust, pulse the cookies in a food processor until you achieve a crumb mixture or place them into a large baggie and smash to a fine texture.. 3 - In a small bowl, mix the cookie crumb mixture with the melted butter and press into greased 8x8 inch pan. 4 - Bake crust in preheated oven for 15 minutes. 5 - Allow to cool. 6 - In a large bowl, beat 1 box of pudding mix and 1 1/2 cups of milk until well blended. 7 - Blend in canned pumpkin and pie spice. Fold in 1 cup of whipped topping.
