The holiday season is upon us! November is here and this month often reminds us to think about what we are truly thankful for. If you are like me, you often take for granted all of the great things that surround you everyday. lives and be thankful for all that is good. It is also a time where we can give back! So many organizations are holding food, blanket, and toy drives this time of year. I enjoy taking my children to go shopping for these much needed items and teaching them that the holiday season is not all about getting, but also giving and being a blessing to others. There is so much fun to be had in and around Boerne this time of year as well! This issue we feature the popular Boerne event that kicks off all the holiday fun, Dickens on Main! Read all about what is in store at the 19th Annual event. Also in this issue, Nancy Meza, CPA with ADKF gives us insight into recent tax law changes, Ron Warden of Edward Jones shares some year-end investment moves and we share with you lots of other news and events from local businesses. I hope you all have a blessed November and a Happy Thanksgiving filled with family and friends.

Time to Think About Year-End Investment Moves
W
article courtesy of Edward Jones
We’ve still got a couple of months left in 2018, but it’s not too soon to start thinking about some year-end investment moves that might benefit you. Here are a few possibilities (although not all will apply to your situation): ADD TO YOUR IRA. For the 2018 tax year, you can put up to $5,500 into your traditional or Roth IRA (assuming you are eligible), or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. If you haven’t reached this limit, consider adding some money. You have until April 15, 2019, to contribute to your IRA for 2018, but why wait until the last minute? INCREASE YOUR 401(K) CONTRIBUTIONS. You already may be investing in your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan, but you might be able to bump up your contributions for the rest of the year, if it’s allowed. Of course, you should always put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.
TAKE YOUR RMDS. If you are 70½ or older, you must start taking withdrawals – called required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or similar retirement plan. Generally, you must take these RMDs by December 31 every year. But if you turned 70½ in 2018, you can wait until April 1, 2019, until you take your first RMD. However, you will then have to take a second RMD (the one for age 71) by December 31, 2019. Taking two RMDs in one year could give you an unexpectedly large taxable income for the year, possibly bumping

you into a higher tax bracket and affecting the amount of your Social Security benefits subject to taxes. So, if you are considering delaying your first RMD, consult with your tax advisor. MAKE CHANGES IN RESPONSE TO LIFE EVENTS. In 2018, did you experience a major life event, such as a marriage, divorce or addition of a child? Or did you change jobs or retire? Any of these events could lead you to adjust your investment plans, so now may be the time to do so, possibly with the help of a financial professional. REVIEW YOUR INVESTMENT MIX. At least once a year, it’s a good idea to review your investment mix to ensure it’s still suitable for your goals and risk tolerance. Sometimes, even without your taking any action, your portfolio might change in ways you hadn’t expected. For example, suppose you wanted your portfolio to contain 60% stocks and 40% bonds and other investments. After a period of rising prices, though, the value of your stocks may have increased so much that they now occupy 65% of your portfolio – which means you may be taking on more risk than you had originally intended. Consequently, you may need to rebalance your portfolio to get back to your original 60% to 40% ratios. (Keep in mind that these figures are just for illustration; everyone’s ideal portfolio mix will depend on their individual situations.) These aren’t the only year-end moves you may want to consider, but they can help you close out 2018 on a positive note. Plus, they can serve as a reminder that you need to be vigilant as you keep working toward your financial goals. BBM

Dickens on Main Brings New Delights to its 2018 Celebration
N
by Kirk Thompson
Now in it’s 19th year, Boerne’s Dickens on Main has long been the most anticipated—and spectacular—holiday celebration in the Texas Hill Country. If you haven’t already made an evening at Dickens your family’s postThanksgiving tradition, then this is the year to begin! Taking place each Thanksgiving weekend, Dickens on Main transforms Boerne’s Hill Country Mile into a vintage Christmas experience, complete with six themed villages filled with entertainment and activities all along Main Street. Favorites include North Pole Village at Main Plaza, where popular musical acts are scheduled both nights from 5-10 p.m. and Santa’s Workshop where professional ice sculptors use chainsaws to transform blocks of ice into amazing Christmas themed sculptures, while steps away, Santa is ready to hear holiday wishes. “Probably one of the most-

loved things about Dickens on Main is the snow that is blown all along Main Street. We love to see kids of all ages laughing and dancing in the snow—many for the first time in South Texas,” said Mary Woods, Dickens on Main project manager. Those who already love the traditions at Dickens will be thrilled to know that most of the old favorites are back, including carriage rides, the Kingwood Choir, “Bah-Humbug: A One Man Christmas Carol,” a 60-foot ice slide as well as live reindeer down at Reindeer Village (next to The Little Nature Store), but several new surprises will also be in store for revelers, including a brand new Scrooge Village extending down E. San Antonio Ave. just across from Main Plaza. “We’ve received requests every year to extend Dickens in scope and size and add some new attractions,

and we are making it happen in a big way this year,” Woods said. Scrooge Village will now host the ice slide, but will also be the home of a brand new “Snowy Village” where guests will be able to play in a field of real snow blown in for the event. More kids crafts, vendors and food trucks will also be in Scrooge Village, along with photo opportunities with a variety of costumed characters like Frosty the Snowman, the gingerbread man and Rudolph, and for the first time the Kendall County Historic Jail House will be open at Dickens, where guests can take photos in front of a real jail cell door. New performers are scheduled down at Dickens Village as well, including stunt juggler Matt Tardy and the acclaimed Sax Fanatics quartet. Performers in North Pole Village this year include Friday night headliner Mighty Orq and the Unusuals along with Castle Brass and David Selbo. Saturday night performances begin with Tina Mitchell Wilkins and Thorn & Coley, with headliner Dave Hanscheck & The Hail Mary Band taking the stage at 8 p.m. While many attractions begin after Main Street closes at 4:30 p.m., performances in Dickens Village begin as early as 2 p.m. and will feature beautiful ballet performances by the San Antonio Ballet Conservancy and other local troupes. Our beautifully decorated shops and galleries will open at 10 a.m. both days, where you can get a continued on page 18

Sonora Bank Opens Second Boerne Location In July 2018, Sonora Bank opened the doors to their second Boerne branch located at 1570 River Road. Referred to as Boerne East, this newly constructed, 15,000 square foot building is both a second bank branch location and also houses many of Sonora Bank’s administrative and corporate staff. “The Boerne area is experiencing a fantastic amount of growth, and we saw the opportunity to open a second Boerne location as a great way to strengthen our ties to this community,” said Jason Kirkpatrick, Vice President/Branch Manager, Boerne East. “Also, there are not a lot of financial institutions on this side of town, and with all of the residential growth in this area we wanted to be able to fill the needs of those residential customers.” Boerne West, Sonora Bank’s first Boerne branch, is located at 122 W. Bandera Road. With its location in the heart of the city, Sonora Bank’s Boerne West branch sees a great deal of commercial business. “We didn’t want to take away from what we had already built here in Boerne, but rather saw a way to better serve the local residents,” added Kirkpatrick. For the design of Boerne East, Sonora Bank turned to architects Peter Lewis and Gary Hatch, who also designed the Sonora Bank branch in Bulverde, Texas. Kim Tomes Dietz, another key

player on the Bulverde branch project team, led interior design efforts for Boerne East, while Daniel Huband and Kenny Mantor of Huband-Mantor Construction, Inc. handled construction of the project. Sonora Bank was organized in 1900 in Sonora, Texas and its local branch still serves as the bank’s headquarters. The bank expanded to San Angelo, Texas in 1995 and opened a second San Angelo branch in 1998. In 2010 the first Boerne location of Sonora Bank was opened. The bank opened a branch in Bulverde, Texas in 2016 and a Loan Production Office in Wimberley, Texas in early 2018 before the second Boerne location opened in July 2018. Sonora Bank plans to open an additional branch in Wimberley mid-2019. When it comes to what sets Sonora Bank apart, Kirkpatrick believes it is “our commitment to our values. We are a traditional bank and operate in a hometown atmosphere. We continue to be a community-focused bank with many of the descendants of the original Board of Directors serving on the current Board. Sonora, Texas will always be our home, and we are excited to continue expanding our footprint in the Texas Hill Country.”BBM

DR. MARITA RIOS JOINS CIBOLO FAMILY MEDICINE Exceptional health care for families and businesses in the Boerne area... and now in Crownridge. Insurance premiums and deductibles have become a major stressor for families across the states. Searching the marketplace. Looking for coverage through employers who might not offer what is needed for a family. Trying to keep your family in good health is extremely difficult when the average american family spends over $26,000/year on healthcare. These stresses transfer to businesses, where stress and financial pressure from medical concerns reduce workplace efficiency. Physicians are struggling too, in order to comply with insurance requirements family physicians spend an average of 20 hours per week doing paperwork. The associated overhead with billing insurance means they need thousands of patients per doctor just to keep the lights on, which adds up to long wait times and short appointments. Recent surveys indicate only half of doctors would choose the same career if they could do it over again. Is there a better way? Dr. Marita Rios, MD decided to make a change and joined Cibolo Family Medicine (CiboloFM). There she can care for the entire family, and makes herself available with same or next day appointments. Instead of charging high prices, CiboloFM offers patients top quality care with a monthly membership fee that covers all visits and procedures. By keeping the business model simple CiboloFM can offer care for a fraction of the cost of the traditional system. Transparent pricing just doesn’t exist in insurance-based care, but with CiboloFM patients can make informed decisions about their care. Cibolo Family Medicine was created by Dr. Sara Stuart to provide better care and accessibility for her patients. Pairing a membership at Cibolo Family Medicine with low-cost catastrophic coverage or a health sharing plan is a great way to reduce costs while providing quality care for families and employees. Businesses and charities can get discounted group rates with CiboloFM, making it possible for employers to provide high-quality medical care that employees will appreciate. Workplace interruptions are reduced because CiboloFM appointments start on time, and patients can call, text, or email their doctor.
CiboloFM limits the number of patients each physician cares for to ensure they have plenty of time and availability, so Dr. Rios can be there for her patients and take the time to fully understand their concerns and answer their questions. Dr. Marita Rios was born in Austin and raised in McAllen, Texas. Her path and passion for medicine was inspired by the many doctors and nurses in her family. She graduated with honors with a B.S. in Human Biology and a concentration in Pathogenesis and Immunity from The University of Texas at Austin. She attended medical school at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. After graduating medical school, she attended her top choice for residency at the University of Texas Health Center in Tyler. She was voted the top resident of her graduating class by faculty. Dr. Rios is an advocate for working together with her patients to provide the best, personalized care for each individual. She believes a personal doctor-patient relationship is the core of primary care and is the foundation of success in the pursuit of excellent mental and physical health. Dr. Rios chose CiboloFM because she believes in resolving root causes of health problems to changes lives, and she wants to provide the best possible care for her patients. Cibolo Family Medicine returns the emphasis and focus to the patient-doctor relationship and replaces a costly and complex billing system with a simple membership fee. This allows the clinic to focus on what really matters to everyone - easy access to quality care from your personal doctor. Dr. Rios welcomes questions about her practice, she can be reached at 210-946-3100 or DrRios@CiboloFM.com

Changes
Recent Tax Law
A
by Nancy Meza, CPA, Tax Manager | ADKF
Another tax filing season is behind us, but it’s never too early to start thinking about next year. ADKF has a Personal Service Division, or PSD, to help with just that! Our PSD group specializes in individual tax returns, and small to medium sized family oowned wned business returns. Our entire tax staff, and in particular our PSD P SD tax professionals, are here to assist with both tax planning aand nd return preparation. A lot has changed for this upcoming tax filing season, covering the calendar year 2018, since Congress passed the Tax Act changes in December 2017. Here are just a few topics and suggestions to be thinking about as we approach the end of 2018: Do you have an up-to-date will? Have you updated beneficiaries on your life insurance policies and IRA’s? If you haven’t looked at these in several years, now is the time. Things could have changed in your life, so make sure your will and trusts are current. Have you looked at your business to see if you qualify for the new Section 199A deduction, applicable to pass-through entities such as subchapter S corporations, for the tax year 2018? The September Boerne Business Monthly issue had an article detailing the new “tax cut haircut” that many pass-through businesses will benefit from. We can assist you with this new tax saver and make any necessary adjustments now before the year-end. Do you have a capital loss carryover on your personal 1040? If so, now may be the time to harvest some capital gains from your stock portfolio. Verify you have a capital loss carryover by checking your 2017 tax return (or calling your tax preparer), then look through your stock portfolio. You could sell a stock with a gain and use your capital loss carryover to offset the gain and thereby not owe any tax on the transaction. But don’t sell a stock just to save tax – always consider the long-term economics of your portfolio – taxes should then be a by-product of prudent planning. Most individuals want to be “penalty proof’ when it comes to how much you pay in for estimated tax deposits during the year. Being penalty proof generally means you need to pay in the smaller of either: 1) your prior year tax (and for some, it needs to be 110% of the prior year tax) or 2) 90% of the current year tax. With so much changing each year most clients rely on paying in 100% or 110% of the prior year tax. But along with the new tax law changes the federal withholding tables also changed. The IRS is urging individuals to look at their year to date withholding on their most current pay stub and make sure that you are on track to have the correct amount of federal withholding by the end of the year. It’s not too late to adjust your withholding at work.

The new standard deduction for many will be a welcome change. For married filing jointly the new standard deduction for 2018 is $24,000. For single or married filing separately the deduction is $12,000, and for the head of household, the amount is $18,000. However, the old “personal exemption” has gone away. For a majority of taxpayers, the new exemption rates will be a net plus with respect to tax savings. If you itemize on Schedule A, instead of taking the standard deduction, many things have changed for you too. For those of us in Texas, we generally deduct our real estate taxes and an amount for state and local sales tax. Under the new rules, the total deduction for real estate taxes plus state and local taxes cannot exceed $10,000. Many of our clients now exceed that amount of real estate taxes each year. Another big change for those that itemize is the miscellaneous 2% deductions are no longer deductible. This includes investment advisory fees, tax preparation fees (unless they are deducted for your business), and unreimbursed employee business expenses. These former deductions have been eliminated. And for those of you who receive a W-2 from your employer, you will no longer be able to deduct your out of pocket expenses on Schedule A. New mortgage acquisition debt is now limited to $750,000 (this was previously $1,000,000). So, before you go buy your million-dollar dream house, or refinance your current home loan, remember that only a portion of your mortgage interest will be deductible. This is not as straightforward as it sounds, please call your tax professional for a full explanation based on your particular situation. Another positive change for many individuals is the child tax credit has been increased to $2,000 per child, and the phase-out has been raised, making many more families eligible. The child still must be under 17 at the end of the year, that has not changed. The credit begins to be phased out for returns with adjusted gross income over $400,000 for married filing joint returns, and $200,000 for all other filers. A lot has changed for the tax year 2018. Don’t be caught off guard and surprised. Speak with your tax advisor and call our office for an appointment. BBM Nancy Meza, CPA, is a Tax Manager at Akin, Doherty, Klein & Feuge, P.C. (ADKF). ADKF is a full-service accounting firm with offices in San Antonio, Boerne and New Braunfels. Operation Gratitude Halloween Give-Back Campaign Underway
T
Candy for a Cause: Donations Distributed to Deployed Troops and Local Heroes
Taking candy from children is usually frowned upon, but teaching them the value of giving back by donating their excess Halloween candy in support of Operation Gratitude’s Care Package Programs for U.S. Troops, Veterans and First Responders is a win-win for kids, parents, and dentists. This Halloween, local trickor-treaters will join kids across the country when they donate their extra Halloween candy to Operation Gratitude at local collection site: ABCD Pediatrics. The sweet treats will be included along with handwritten thank you letters in Care Packages sent to U.S. Service Members deployed overseas, Veterans, and to First Responders serving
in their local communities. Americans spend an estimated $2.5 billion dollars on a whopping 600 million pounds of Halloween candy each year. In 2017, more than 400,000 pounds of candy was donated to Operation Gratitude and distributed to America’s Heroes through its care package programs. “Operation Gratitude’s mission is to thank all who serve, bridging the divide between grateful Americans and the Heroes who serve and protect them,” said Kevin Schmiegel, Lieutenant Colonel, USMC (Ret.) and CEO of Operation Gratitude. “The Halloween Candy Give-Back Program provides every American child the opportunity to learn about service, sacrifice and generosity.” Candy and handwritten thank you letters for deployed Service Members, Veterans, and First Responders will be collected at 124 East Bandera Road, Suite 304 through 11/18/18 from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Operation Gratitude is also accepting donations of dental floss and travel sized toothpaste, as well as pens and mechanical pencils for deployed troops writing letters home during the holidays. Visit www.operationgratitude.com/express-your-thanks/halloweencandy to learn more. BBM
