I
If November has a theme, I bet we could all agree that it is all about being grateful. This month hosts Thanksgiving, which as the name suggests, is a time to give thanks. This year, why not express your appreciation for life’s blessings by letting people know how much they mean to you, volunteering your time, or paying kindness to a stranger. Even if this world seems to be a pretty crazy place these days, I bet we can all find much to be thankful for. This issue’s cover feature was a particularly fun one! I got to meet the Von Erich family and share their story of triumph over tribulation, their deep love for one another and their move to Boerne! Read all about it starting on page 16. Dickens on Main is a huge local holiday
event and we have all the details. Be sure to attend and soak up the Christmas season as our already beautiful town becomes something straight out of a Hallmark movie. Read about the four fun-filled weekends planned beginning on page 22. The First Families of Kendall County feature has become quite popular and this month we learn more about Holekamp Family. Also in this issue, Annie’s Apothecary has new owners. Be sure to stop in and congratulate Dr. Scott and Blakely Sumners and support them in their new endeavor. As always, we share lots of local news and information, a full Calendar of Events and much more. Our pages are filled with local businesses that make each issue of Boerne Business Monthly possible. Be sure to show them lots of support. It’s folks and businesses like these that make our town so special! Happy Thanksgiving,

D
NEW OWNERSHIP
Dr. Scott and Blakely Sumners officially took ownership of Annie’s Apothecary, a local compounding pharmacy, on September 8th of this year. They look forward to continuing the business’ mission of being the best resource to achieve optimal health and wellness through the art of compounding, nutritional supplements, and patient education. Started in 2007 by Dr. Leigh Ann Greenberg, Annie’s Apothecary is Kendall County’s only PCAB-accredited compounding pharmacy. They offer custom compounded medication, pharmaceutical grade supplements and clinical consulting for hormone therapy, wellness, neurotransmitters and food sensitivities. Dr. Scott and Blakely are committed to providing the same level of service and quality that Annie’s customers are accustomed to and are excited to be a part of the local Boerne business community. “We have loved Boerne and the hill country for a long time. We have family in Kerrville and just love spending time in this area. Now to be able to continue to build this great local business is a dream come true,” said Blakely. According to Dr. Sumners, “We are truly grateful for the foundation that Dr. Greenberg laid with Annie’s Apothecary. She was a trailblazer in bringing this type of pharmacy to the area and forged a path for compounding pharmacies and holistic care to be more widely accepted. We are excited for her as she takes the next steps in her career where she will be able to blend her

knowledge of both healthcare and law.” Enthusiastic to carry on the mission of Annie’s Apothecary, the Sumnerses see the business as a perfect fit for them. Dr. Sumners is not only a pharmacist, but is actively doing coursework in Naturopathy, which will allow Annie’s to be able to help more people through both allopathic and naturopathic resources. At Annie’s, their team concentrates fully on compounding and complementary healthcare, constantly learning new information and techniques for their customers. “We want to help our patients feel better in order to live more fully. Our bodies are designed to heal, and we aim to be the best resource to help our customers achieve their wellness.” BBM

The First Families of Kendall County
S
ponsored by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County (GSKC), The First Families of Kendall County project began in 1999. The purpose of this project is to recognize the living descendants of persons instrumental in founding and settling of the area encompassed by present day Kendall County, Texas and to preserve the history of their families and the county. To date, 586 applications have been approved for 318 different individuals. One hundred seventy (170) Founders and one hundred four (104) Early Settlers have been documented and recognized. They represent one hundred thirty-five (135) different families in Kendall County. There are two hundred sixty-two (262) volumes of First Families notebooks on the shelves at the Family History Place. Here we will share with you some of the stories of those First Families who settled this beautiful area of the Texas hill country. We hope you enjoy!

Georg Friedrich “Fritz” Holekamp 1815 – 1862
T
Betty Wilhelmine Abbenthern 1826 – 1902 by James Hurst
The Holekamp family is one of the earliest founding families, arriving in Texas in 1844 and settling in Comfort in 1854. Georg Friedrich "Fritz" Holekamp was born in Hanover, Prussia, in January 1812. Son of a wealthy Hannover builder, he was an educated royal architect and musician. In March 1844, when he was thirty-two years old, he married Betty Wilhelmine Abbenthern, the daughter of Henry Christian Abbenthern, who had turned eighteen that same month.
BOERNE BUSINESS MONTHLY | November 2023
Betty's father was the ministerial accountant to Ernest August, King of Hannover. Betty was raised in the king's household and schooled with the king's daughter. She and Fritz met while playing music at court gatherings. They married in March 1844 and a few months later joined Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Commissioner General of the Adelsverein, onboard the Johann Dethard and emigrated to Texas, arriving in Galveston on November 24, 1844. When the settlers moved overland to the first German settlement site, New Braunfels, the Guadalupe River was on the rise. Prince Solms plunged into the raging waters riding a magnificent white horse. Not to be outdone, Betty rode her hose into the swollen waters and successfully crossed over to the astonishment of everyone. When Texas became part of the Union, Betty sewed together strips of cloth into a 6x3 foot United States flag and raised it on the public square. The flag symbolized that the immigrants had settled in a free and independent country. Their first son, George, was born shortly thereafter in August 1846, and five months later, the Holekamps acquired 320 acres of land from the Fisher-Miller Grant, just outside of Fredericksburg. Fritz signed the December 15, 1847, petition to form Gillespie County. In 1849, the Holekamps purchased 55 acres in Sisterdale from Nicolaus Zink and became the third family to move into the new German settlement. Their second child, Julius, was born there in June 1849. Here, Betty became an expert marksman, shooting as well as any of the men. Indian raids were frequent, and it was not long before the Holekamps moved again, this time to San Antonio. Their son, Daniel, was born there in April 1851. Finally, in 1854, Fritz settled his family in Comfort. He had assisted Ernst Altgelt in surveying and laying out the town and built the first house there. Music was a significant form of entertainment in the new communi-
ty, and Fritz sang second bass in the first men's quartet. Ernst Altgelt was first tenor, Fritz Goldbeck was second tenor and C. W. Boerner sang first bass. From this modest beginning, there grew a large männerchor, directed by Fritz Holekamp. Henry Schemmelpfenning played for the town dances, alternating between violin and clarinet. He was also an accomplished pianist and played piano when the dance was held at the Holekamps, who had the only piano in town. When the Civil War broke out, Fritz enlisted in the Confederate Army as a musician. When he was killed in September 1862, music in Comfort suffered a serious decline, and it was not until 1869 that another männerchor was formed. Betty was left a widow with seven children to raise. Dora, Johanna, Ernst, and Bettie had been born between 1854 and 1862. George had just turned sixteen, and Bettie continued on page 13

was seven months old. Betty took in boarders and opened a sewing and washing business to provide for her family. Among the boarders was the future Kerrville banker, Louis Schreiner from Turtle Creek, who was attending the Comfort school. In 1870, Betty was living in Comfort with her seven children, and her occupation was listed as farming. George was 29 and was also listed as a farmer. Julius was 21 and a store clerk. By 1880, Betty was still listed as head-of-household, but her occupation was keeping house. Living with her were Daniel, a 29-year-old merchant, Ernst, a 21-year-old carpenter, and Bettie, who was 18. Daniel's two sons, Otto, age 4, and Ernst, age 2, were also living with her. Daniel's wife had died a few months before the census was taken. Living next door was Daniel's father-in-law, August Faltin, who was also a merchant, and probably Daniel's employer. In 1900, Betty was living with her youngest daughter, Bettie Schmelter, whose husband Henry died in 1895. The occupation field is blank. From this census, we learn that Betty Holekamp had eleven children, and seven of them (identified here) were still living. Where and when were the other four children born? The fact that the immigration year for Betty was correct lends credibility to the claim of eleven children and an interesting genealogical gap for the Holekamp family history buffs. Betty died November 2, 1902, and is buried in the Comfort Cemetery. BBM

VON ERICH FAMILY
F
Returns Home to Texas by Lauren Stumberg | photos by The Marvelous Mrs. Lindsey
For fans of professional wrestling, and even those who don’t follow the sport, the name Von Erich is likely to ring a bell. This family is one of the great dynasties of the wrestling industry and played a large role in popularizing the sport – especially here in Texas. Originally from the Lone Star State, the Von Erichs have spent many years living in Kauai, the fourth largest island in Hawaii. However, after all these years, the family felt called to move back to Texas and now happily calls Boerne home. The Von Erich name is often associated with tragedy and heartache, but upon meeting them you know that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Yes, there has been loss and pain, but the family today is filled with an intense love for one another and an unwavering faith in God. Kevin Von Erich is the last surviving son of Jack Adkisson. Jack took on the name of Fritz Von Erich as his in-ring wrestling persona. Each of his sons who were in the wrestling business also used the “Von Erich” name after the family patriarch. Jack passed away in 1997, and prior to that the family had experienced much turmoil and grief with five of his six sons having predeceased him. His oldest son Jack Jr. died of an accident at the age of six. David Von Erich passed away at the age of 25 from enteritis, while sons Mike, Chris and Kerry all died by suicide. “Our family moved to Hawaii to give my dad a chance to reset. At the time, everything here in Texas was reminding him of the tragedy he had experienced with his brothers,” said Kristen Adkisson-Nikolas, Kevin Von Erich’s oldest daughter. Along with Kevin and his wife Pamela, their four children Kristen, Jill, Ross and Marshall and their families, all decided to move with their parents. According to Kristen, “Our dad has
16

had so much loss and we just love him so much, we want to fill that void and truly enjoy being around him.” In Kauai, they eventually ended up on a family compound where they could all be close to one another. And while living on the island was a wonderful, healing time for the Von Erichs, the time eventually came when they felt the need
to move back to the mainland. “We missed Texas and as my kids get older there are things I want them to experience that aren’t available in Kauai. In addition, Ross and Marshall are traveling a lot for their wrestling careers and the extra time it takes to get to and from Hawaii was making that difficult,” said Kristen. “So we made the decision to look for a property here in Texas where we could still all be together.” The Von Erichs’ search led them here to the Texas hill country. “I didn’t want my Dad or the kids to miss out on nature. That is a big part of who they are. They would spend their days in Kauai exploring, so I knew the hill country was the perfect spot for us. We also wanted a property with a built-in business, something that we kids could run and operate to bless our parents who have done so much for all of us,” added Kristen. “We prayed together as a family before we began our property search that God would lead us to where we needed to be. My dad, remembering his days back in Texas, had actually said that if we see a horny toad it might just be the place. When we were at the showing of the property we eventually purchased, we stepped out on the back porch of the main house and sure enough, there was a horny toad! We sent the picture to my dad who was back in Hawaii and
we all thought that maybe this was a sweet sign that this is home.” The property where the Von Erichs moved to has plenty of room for the family to be together and an on-site wedding and event venue, The Ironwood Barn. The space is a large, converted barn that offers a flexible space filled with rustic elegance. “The family who owned the property before us had strong Christian faith and there is even a bible in the foundation of the venue, which means a lot to us. In addition to the event space, there is a groomsmen room, bridal party room and on-site lodging. We also have plans for a bridal house. We are excited to not only be living here in Boerne, but to be part of the local business community as well,” said Kristen. “Marriage and family mean so much to us, so to get to be even a small part of these couples’ journeys is extra special.” The Ironwood Barn has multiple indoor/outdoor ceremony and event spaces, covered patios, a caterer’s prep area and it’s all surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful hill country landscapes. In addition to weddings, the Ironwood Barn has hourly and daily rates for hosting corporate and special events. The Von Erichs feel blessed to have found their new home that is the perfect fit for their family. While Jill and her family are still in Kauai continued on page 18

chosen to rise above and overcome those unfortune life events is one to be admired. “Hardships produce wisdom and character and our dad exhibits that. He truly believes that he is still here because God has him here for a reason. We didn’t grow up with a lot of strict rules, but rather we watched our father have a personal and genuine relationship with Jesus. He talked to him with his whole heart and all of us kids wanted that same thing. Instead of getting caught up on the bad he had experienced, he chose to appreciate the small, beautiful moments and live each day to the fullest,” added Kristen. The Von Erichs are truly an inspirational family and our local community is blessed to have them. BBM

managing the family’s property there, the rest of the kids, grandkids and Kevin and Pam are here just outside of Boerne and loving the people, the local schools and of course the food! In addition to their move back to Texas, the Von Erichs have recently found themselves in the headlines once again due to the upcoming release of The Iron Claw. The A24 film that was produced and directed by Sean Durkin is set to be released on December 22 of this year and

includes big names such as Jeremy Allen White, Lily James and Zac Efron, who plays Kevin Von Erich. Commenting on the film, Kristen said “While it is definitely not fully accurate, the film was very emotional for our family and has opened doors and opportunities for my dad and brothers.” The Von Erichs, who society wishes to portray as a lamentable story, are in fact quite the opposite. Their true story of a family that has

Downtown Delights DURING DICKENS ON MAIN AND MORE!
I
“It’s like being in a Hallmark movie.” When people ask what it’s like celebrating the holidays in Boerne, this is often what you’ll hear. Downtown shops and restaurants go all out with lights, decorations, seasonal menus, gifts and clothing to set the holidays apart, while local workshops focus on holiday crafts, cocktails and great ways to gather. Special events, hosted by the City and local retailers, offer four weeks of holiday fun. Everything from a wassail walk and a kids’ scavenger hunt down Main Street to activity-filled weekends of shows, food, an annual parade and live entertainment. Kicking the season off in a big way is Dickens on Main, a two-day festival held each Thanksgiving Weekend on the Hill Country Mile, which transforms Boerne’s historic downtown district into a vintage winter wonderland complete with live entertainment, kids’ activities, carolers, food and a holiday market in North Pole (Main) Plaza. Held on November 24 & 25 this year, Dickens on Main is ready to dazzle with all of the holiday favorites—including live performers, photo opportunities, carolers and snow along Main Street! Dickens on Main is also host to the City’s official kickoff to the holiday season, ushered in with carolers and a tree lighting at North Pole Plaza Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by trumpeted Christmas carols by Castle Brass. Revelers are encouraged to spend the day on the Hill Country Mile shopping and dining then stroll Main Street as the entertainment delights throughout the day and into the night with caroling, visits to Santa and much more. Information and schedules for Boerne’s holiday events can be found at www.holidaysinboerne.com. The following Saturday, December 2, Boerne hosts a separate event, the annual Weihnachts Parade, where shops will once again stay open late as more than 100 lighted floats make their way down beautiful Main Street. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair for the parade and enjoy lots of opportunities for snacks, cocktails and other treats offered along the street. Now in its 32nd year, Weihnachts is the City’s only night parade! More festivities planned throughout December include A Toast to Olde Town, December 8-10, and Kinder Fest, December 15-17, which are hosted by the Boerne Retailers and Restaurant Association. The perfect time to experience all of the holiday glamour of downtown, but without the bigger crowds, these events offer special activities each weekend including a Cookie Crawl, Santa visits and more. To see what’s in store, follow us at @dickensonmain on Facebook and Instagram!

The Key to a Great Neighborhood:
W
You!
We all want to live in a great neighborhood - unless you are the "grinch"! The good news is that no matter your location and type of property you call home, you can improve the area in which you live. And it doesn't have to take a lot of effort!
also observe what nearby communities are doing and see if those might fit into your neighborhood.
GO FIRST
As our community grows, it is vital that we maintain that small town vibe by knowing who our neighbors are and all watching out for one another. Take that step today to know and be involved in your neighborhood. You won't regret it! BBM
Your instinct might be to wait for the neighbors to introduce themselves to you, especially if you just moved in. But your neighbors may be taking the same approach. Whether you're a new or established resident, a simple hello can be the opening you need to start a conversation and ultimately, a friendship. And when you see a neighbor who needs a hand, offer to help. Chances are that person will return the favor in the future.
GET OUT THERE
Adapted from Texas Realtor magazine.
The more interactions you have with neighbors, the greater your chances of forming neighborhood bonds. Work in your yard, walk the neighborhood, hang out at the condo pool, or spend time in the apartment's fitness center. And when you are there, remember to make that small effort to break the ice.
LOOK FOR WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
Many neighborhoods stage events that require volunteers. You may be able to co-host a block party, help set-up the Fourth of July parade, pitch in at a park clean-up, or participate in other group activities.
WANT TO DO MORE?
There are many other opportunities to improve your neighborhood if you have the inclination and time. Serve on the board of your neighborhood association or homeowners' association. Be the person to start a new event, such as a movie night or Christmas decorating contest. Organize help for older neighbors who need assistance with things like groceries, medical appointments, pets or trash. Support local schools and teachers. You can

DEVELOPER OF ESPERANZA IN BOERNE WINS “BEST OVERALL COMMUNITY” IN TEXAS, PLUS SEES RECORD-BREAKING SALES
T
Texas developer, The Lookout Group, receives highly acclaimed industry recognition and continued growth at artful master-planned community in Boerne.
The Lookout Group, a real estate development firm specializing in Master-Planned Residential Communities and Mixed-Use Commercial Projects, was recognized as a finalist and winner of multiple coveted industry accolades for their artful residential community in Boerne, Esperanza. The Texas Association of Builders Star Awards are the only statewide tribute to excellence in the home building industry and focus on recognizing residential real estate groups and professionals across more than 110 categories. At this year’s formal ceremony on July 14, 2023, Esperanza and The Lookout Group took home the highly acclaimed grand prize of “Best Overall Community” in the 300-acres to 599-acres category. This is Esperanza’s second time winning this highly competitive category in the past three years on the statewide level. Over 600 project and nomination entries were submitted to the TAB Star Awards by 103 companies from 60 cities across Texas. On the heels of this recent recognition, Esperanza is experiencing a record-breaking year in sales. Home buyers are flocking from larger Texas cities and other states to take in the wide-open spaces of the Hill Country. Esperanza is the first and only true master-planned community in Boerne and offers residents the perfect blend of small-town charm with easy access to big city conveniences. Seven hand-selected builders currently offer homes ranging from the $400s to $1 Million+ and are perfectly positioned for young families, empty nesters, and retirees alike. Due to the high demand, Esperanza will be releasing two new phases of homesites later this year. Fondly known as the village of Quintana, a limited number of exquisite homesites will be released in partnership with Perry Homes offering homebuyers a prime location with convenient access to The Club, Herff Elementary, and other resort-style amenities. Quintana is also the first village positioned along Splendido and Galisteo, which will soon connect to Highway 46 offering a second and third entrance to Esperanza. Buyers interested in being among the first to secure a home in Quintana are encouraged to visit the Perry Homes Model in Esperanza’s neighboring village, Bravada. Walk-ins welcome daily. Regency at Esperanza, an exclusive collection of homes designed specifically for adults 55+, will also be releasing a new phase of homesites this year. Having nearly sold out the inaugural phase in less than a year, Regency features single-level homes by award-winning builder, Toll Brothers. Regency recently celebrated the groundbreaking of The Hacienda, a private clubhouse expected to open in 2024 offering the active adult residents an exclusive pool, fitness center, pickleball and bocce ball courts, and recreational space for socializing. Buyers interested in learning more about the three collections available in Regency at Esperanza are invited to visit the newly completed Sales Gallery and three models – open daily.
