Let’s be part of the

Last month was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and I spent time with a local mother whose daughter, Macy Duke, is currently going through cancer treatment. This brave young girl is one of many heroes in our community that share a powerful spirit. We all need to show compassion and support to the families affected by childhood cancer. Through awareness and participation we can be part of the solution to this disease that threatens to take away our little ones too soon. Last month, we took time to also recognize thirty-two of the city’s 223 full-time employees for their service to this community. Each year we honor those that have completed either five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty, or more years in public service. Chris Turk, the city’s planning and community services director has an extraordinary thirty years of service; Carlos Chavez and Claude Culak have each worked twenty-five years for the city; Kim Brietzke, Jesse Aguirre, and Mark Mattick have completed twenty years of service as city of Boerne employees. Congratulations to these, as well as many others, and a very special ‘thank you’ to all of our city employees that work day and night to keep our local government and utilities functioning. I want to extend kudos to the members of the Kendall County Bar Association who are giving their time and expertise to our emergency first responders. These local attorneys spent their time giving back to the community by drafting free wills and medical directives for law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical responders in the Kendall County area. On yet another note of thanks – as I drive around Boerne from meeting to meeting and walk along our trail system, I notice many residents picking up trash along their way. What a terrific example of community pride! As I promised in an earlier column, I have updates to share on current and planned transportation improvement projects in Boerne. If you travel along State Highway 46 east of town, you may notice that the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) recently added a right turn lane onto Charger Boulevard. This is the first of many roadway improvements along this very active corridor. Next up, a TXDOT contractor will be reconstructing the Herff Road intersection with River and Esser Roads. As development continues to occur further east, the TXDOT also has plans to add more lanes to Highway 46E out to Ammann Road; however,

the $10 million in funding for that work is not yet available. Judge Lux and I sent a letter to the Texas Transportation Commission last month requesting that funding previously earmarked for the San Antonio street car project, be redirected to Kendall County. Of course, the Herff Road project continues and the County reports that this first phase is basically on schedule and should be complete in early 2015. The highly anticipated IH 10 frontage road project will be getting underway in early 2015. It is my understanding that the TXDOT is in the process of hiring the contractor and getting all of the preliminary work done now. This is a very important project, because not only will it improve the exit from and entrance back to IH 10W south of the Bandera bridge, it will provide access to the commercial properties between IH 10 and Main Street where the existing Christus Parkway ends. The vision for retail development in that area, which is consistent with the city’s master plan, is very exciting. Your local leaders feel a great responsibility to leverage tax dollars with state and federal funding to keep these transportation project moving forward. We are working diligently to be proactive. Please be patient in the construction zones – the temporary inconveniences will be more than worth it. Fall is finally here and October is one of our busiest months – Carol and I hope to see many of you out and about enjoying the hill country air!

BISD Enrollment Tops 7,400 Students Boerne ISD is experiencing a 3.2 percent increase in student enrollment over last year as the district moved through the third full week of school. As of August 29, the district had 7,449 students enrolled; that number compares to 7,220 students for the same date last year. The enrollment figure for 2014 marks an increase of 5.8 percent over the same date in 2012, when 7,041 students were on the rolls. District officials point out that enrollment will fluctuate throughout the year but add that the trend is unquestionably toward continued growth. “We live in the fifth fastest growing county in the nation according to recent U.S. Census Bureau data,” said Boerne ISD superintendent David Stelmazewski. “Enrollment growth is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. The good news is that the district has a plan to manage growth, a plan developed with community input and endorsed by voters who approved the bond initiative in May 2013.” Additional classrooms being built on the district’s two middle school campuses will facilitate the transition of sixth grade to the middle schools in 2015-16, thereby creating additional classroom space on the district’s five elementary campuses. Additional facilities being built at Boerne High School will expand the capacity of that campus while also enhancing academic offerings. A new Fabra elementary campus in 2016 will expand capacity at that school by more than 200 students. “This is an exciting time to be part of Boerne ISD,” Stelmazewski said. “The growth certainly presents its challenges, but we have known about and been preparing for growth at this level for some time. Our biggest asset in addressing growth is the broad community support we have and the way our citizens place a high priority on educating our children and grandchildren.”

You’re frustrated, and so is your child. Classwork and homework by now are a daily struggle of tears and yelling. Your child is falling behind, and the school is clueless as to how to solve the problem.

Both Boerne High Schools Make Newsweek List Both Boerne ISD high schools have been named among the top 500 public high schools in the country by a newly released Newsweek study. “America’s Top High Schools 2014” ranks Boerne High School 167th on its list and Boerne Champion High School 476th. The magazine reviewed data from almost 14,500 schools across the nation in developing a short list of 4,400. The top 500 schools were evaluated based on criteria that included students’ college readiness, graduation rates and other factors. The study was based on the 2011-12 academic year, the most recent year data is available from the NCES federal database. “Quality instruction, engaged students and involved parents will carry the day every time,” said Boerne ISD superintendent David Stelmazewski. “Obviously, we are very pleased to have the hard work that takes place in Boerne schools recognized in this fashion. It is truly a reflection on the entire district because a majority of the high school students whose results were part of the study moved up through our elementary and middle schools. It is a win for the entire district.” Other Texas schools of note joining the two Boerne schools on the list include Highland Park, Lake Travis, Westlake and Alamo Heights. Full results of the study are available online at http://www.newsweek.com/high-schools/ americas-top-schools-2014.

Boerne education foundation Awards Every Teacher in BISD The Boerne Education Foundation distributed a $50 Staples Gift Card to every teacher in the Boerne Independent School District on Monday, August 18, 2014 during the district’s annual Convocation. According to BEF president Angie Lemmons, a total of $25,000 was distributed to 513 classroom teachers in an effort to offset teachers’ out-of-pocket expenses when preparing for a new school year. “We know that teachers often spend their own money on basic learning materials to prepare their classrooms and engage their students. By providing these gift cards, we hope they can significantly offset their personal expenses,” said Lemmons. Superintendent David Stelmazewski extended gratitude on behalf of the district’s teachers. “The volunteers of BEF continue to find avenues to reach out and support our teachers and our educational mission,” Stelmazewski said. “This is a very generous gift that I know will be appreciated by each and every member of our faculty.” Champion High School Biology and IPC teacher Amanda Pelletier added, “Thank you so much for the $50 gift card! What an unexpected surprise and a welcome addition to the back to school

procedures! BEF is truly an asset to BISD!” The Boerne Education Foundation is a non-profit organization formed in 1997 to provide opportunities for education excellence in Boerne ISD. Every year, each school receives vital monies on a per capita basis for its students and many teachers are awarded grants for classroom materials and projects that empower them to give students an exemplary education. To date, the Boerne Education Foundation has distributed nearly $2,000,000 to Boerne ISD schools. The Annual Giving Campaign will kick off in the fall of 2014, and the annual Rock On Fundraising Gala will take place on April 18, 2015 at The Cana Ballroom at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church of Boerne. This state-of-the-art venue provides a magical setting for any special event. Please visit the website at www.canaballroom.com. 259 Brantley’s Bistro Blends Unprecedented Style and an Old-Fashioned Approach

I

by Denise R. Marcos | photos by Ron Pritchett

If you walk into 259 Brantley’s Bistro you will get a whiff of the sweet aroma of the day’s seasonal soups and salads, delectable entrees compiled of locally-sourced meats and ingredients and the scratch-made desserts that area folk come back for day after day. Each dish is crafted and prepared with a simple and authentic approach—a philosophy that head chef Joseph Brantley has followed since his pre-teen days when his passion for food blossomed into a flourishing career. Underneath the guidance of his mother, who was also a successful chef, Brantley acquired a defined palette for quality. Every week he handpicks a variety of seasonal produce and farmraised meats from the market—an essential component to offering the finest and freshest dishes to his patrons.

14

B oerne B usiness M onthly | October 2014

“When you have a quality meat or produce, there is no need to mask it. My goal is to enhance the flavor, not hide them. I don’t use any more than five or six ingredients in a dish. I strive to have those flavors complement each other. That’s what makes a dish good. The meats we purchase from local ranchers are hormone free and grass-fed. You can really taste the difference in quality,” he said. Prior to purchasing 259 this past spring, Brantley upheld the title of executive chef at The Terrace Grill at the former Riven Rock Ranch. During his 13-year career, he has worked at several Hill Country eateries. It was there that he established a following of loyal patrons who have passionately stayed with him throughout his growth. Situated at its original location at 259 Main Street in downtown Boerne, the bistro has established a new reputation in its short time under new ownership. Prior to becoming 259 Brantley’s Bistro, the restaurant was a dining locale of different sorts. Adjacent to the popular eatery, and integrated right along tables and chairs, is 259 Home Market. Visitors could not only

eat beside original artwork, but they could also purchase it. Today however, although still right next to the gift shop, the bistro with its newly knocked out walls, fresh coat of paint and expanded patio, continues to lure dozens of locals and area visitors to its doors each day. Having gone through this significant renovation prior to its grand opening last month, 259 is quickly becoming one of the town’s most popular places to dine. The bistro is currently only serving lunch and Sunday brunch, but by the holidays Brantley hopes to serve evening courses to diners. Able to accommodate nearly 100 guests, the space is a perfect spot for both intimate and larger gatherings. And while its casual, yet sophisticated atmosphere is an attractive draw all on its own, it is Brantley’s style of cooking that brings them back. Describing his approach as eclectic, he creates diverse dishes of local game, fresh herbs, organic produce and Texas wines. “People might say that my cuisine is French influenced, but I would say that I have a diverse take on everything I make.

I may braise meat a particular way, but pair it with curry. It’s about mixing different styles and techniques to create a dish that is simply just tasty,” he said. “I am influenced by what’s available. Whatever is in season at the time and what’s there the morning I go to market. That’s where it all starts. I find my inspiration that day and create an entire menu for the week.” Brantley said that those who visit often really appreciate the ever-changing menu selections he offers. “Because we create things based on the season, we really don’t have a menu set in stone and our regular customers really enjoy trying new things. It allows them to feel like they’re coming to a new place, but they’re still getting a quality meal from the same people who care about their loyalty. It is them and all the new customers who visit us who make us successful,” he said. Brantley, his wife Bonnie, and her two children Eric and Mike, have poured their hearts out into this business, finally bringing the dream of owning a restaurant to life. Every single day it is open, the four of them, along with their dedicated and passionate staff, give something to their customers other than just great food—they give them invaluable service only offered by those who truly care for what they do. “We could not be happier to have come across this opportunity. It all just worked out and almost seamlessly. To able to do what you love for a living is amazing. Not everyone gets to pursue their passion, but we are lucky enough to do so. And so far, even in our short time of being officially open, it’s been great,” Brantley said. BBM

Situated at its newest location at 255 Main Street in downtown Boerne, the store blends vintage furniture, art and knick-knacks with industrial accents of mixed metals inspired by an era of craftsmanship. “What’s great about Boerne is every shop has a different look and feel to it. We are definitely different than any other store here. We carry everything from high-end antiques to very affordable pieces of keepsakes and art. We have something for everyone,” Ernst said. “We have some children’s clothing that were created and designed by Jeanie herself. And we also sell local artists’ work and have some Richard

Lined amongst century-old buildings ringing with famous stories of yesteryear are some of the Hill Country’s most sought-after places to visit. Each month dozens of people flock to Boerne to enjoy the scenic outdoor activities, its diverse restaurants and quaint boutique shops. Having always had a distinct love for the charm of this small town, good friends Jordis Ernst and Jeanie Truax decided to turn their passion for shopping and design into another reason for visitors to fall in love with the city. In the spring of 2012, they opened 259 Home Market.

Schmidt jewelry that our customers just love.” While these things are certainly big sellers, the shop is also famously known for its wide array of vintage furniture, home accents and décor. The space, fittingly designed using earth tones, showcases its products in a magazine-worthy way that attracts passersby every day. “We love the natural look metal and wood provides. It has that upscale, classy feel that is still inviting and homey,” Ernst noted. “We love what the furniture we find at market, auctions and shows brings to the space. That’s our favorite part— finding these treasures to bring back to the store. It’s just another part of a story being told.” Throughout the store a marvelous tale unfolds with every piece that graces the shelves, counters and walls of this eclectic space—a goal that Ernst and Truax were both happy to accomplish when they opened 259’s doors two years ago. “We both had booths at the Corner Cartel. We shared a

similar style, we became quick friends and when this store location opened up, Jeanie and I got together and said, ‘let’s do it.’ So we did,” Ernst said. But as the name suggests, 259’s address was previously a part of the restaurant that is now 259 Brantley’s Bistro and was once a saloon and bakery. Fitting to its original configuration when first built by Ludwig Ort and his wife Olga Vogt decades ago, Ernst and Truax kept the layout similar when they opened the bistro and gift shop. And as their fondness for home goods grew, they sought to sell the restaurant half. In April of 2014 it was purchased and the duo worked solely on providing unique products to shoppers. “When you love to shop, and both Jeanie and I do tremendously, and you’re able to turn that passion into a successful business it is a great thing. Our dream is to have a store that is unique and offers something that no other store in Boerne does. And so far, two years later we are happily doing very well.” BBM

Sonora Bank Restructuring For Growth

T

The Board of Directors of Sonora Bank announced a restructuring of the Bank to provide for the implementation of their strategic growth agenda. The restructuring was effective October 1, 2014. First Sonora Bancshares Inc. became the holding company for Sonora Bank and Sonora Mortgage, as well as any new future businesses that may be considered by the board. The establishment of First Sonora Bancshares, Inc. includes the Board naming a new Executive Chairman to lead the organization. Bob Malone, previously the President & CEO of Sonora Bank, has been named by the Board of Directors as Executive Chairman, President and CEO of First Sonora Bancshares, Inc. and Executive Chairman of Sonora Bank. Commenting on this organizational restructuring Ronnie Cox, current Chairman of the Board, said, “It has truly been a pleasure to have served as Chairman of the Sonora Bank Board of Directors these past 13 years. I will continue to serve as a Director of both the Sonora Bank and First Sonora Bancshares. These have been very exciting times for our bank and our mortgage company and I am very pleased that Bob Malone has agreed to accept the positon as our new Executive Chairman. Bob brings with him tremendous business experience and a tireless enthusiasm and excitement to our organization.” Bob Malone, incoming Executive Chairman, added “I am honored to have been asked by the Board to serve in this new capacity. The new holding company structure separates the different business entities into clear business lines, but at the same time it places them under one organization for management. As the holding company continues to grow, it will allow each new business opportunity to be independent and allowed to flourish.” Malone was elected to the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Sonora, Texas in April of 2009, and was subsequently appointed by the Board of Directors as President and CEO in October 2009. Prior to joining Sonora Bank, he spent almost 35 years with BP and retired as an Executive Vice President of BP plc. and the Chairman and President of BP America Inc. Malone holds a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso, and was an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Master of Science

in Management. In announcing the restructuring Malone said, “The Board of Directors and I are pleased to name an outstanding and talented executive leadership team for First Sonora Bancshares, Inc., This team, along with our over 100 talented and dedicated employees, will enable us to continue to provide unequaled service to our customers in a warm and welcoming community banking atmosphere.” • Carlin Friar, currently an Executive Vice President and the Chief Operating Officer of Sonora Bank, has been named an Executive Vice President of First Sonora Bancshares, Inc., and President and CEO of Sonora Bank. He has also been named to the Board of Directors of Sonora Bank. • Pat Holt will now serve as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of First Sonora Bancshares, Inc. Recruiting & Hiring

N

hiring

Sorting the Fact vs. Fiction of by Patti Johnson

No one is quite able to pin it down precisely, but experts all agree that there is a steep price tag attached to employee turnover. So how can you avoid it? For starters, it’s critical that you recruit and hire the right job candidates – the ones that will not only cut the muster but also stick around. But how do you know which candidates fit that bill? There’s no scientific formula for identifying the right job candidate, but there are sensible recruiting practices that are proven to be effective and worthwhile. Hiring managers, however, often buy into common recruiting myths or sidestep smart practices in favor of a shortcut. It’s time to debunk the myths and refocus your recruiting efforts so you can recognize the right candidate with real staying power. Myth 1: Interviews are secondary to assessments. Assessments have grown in popularity, and for good reason. They can be a powerful tool in assessing an applicant’s personality traits and skills. However, employers are making a mistake if they allow interviews to become a mere formality and base hiring decisions solely on test results. Personal interaction is a critical part of the recruiting and hiring process. When conducted properly, face-to-face interviews are still the best way to understand the nuances of a candidate’s job history, gauge his or her passion and work ethic, and get a sense for whether he or she will fit well within the company. To conduct an effective interview, interviewers need to be prepared with targeted questions and be equally prepared to listen to the candidate’s responses. Myth 2: We need to hire A-list employees. Recruiting gurus often note the need for companies to attract top talent. In reality, however, the best job candidates aren’t typically Harvard graduates or seasoned blue chip executives. They may not even be candidates with the most experience. Perceived A-listers, however you define them, lean toward being more cerebral and ambitious. They want to advance quickly and be well compensated for their knowledge and intellect. If your company or the position you are filling doesn’t provide a clear path for growth, that A-lister will be moving on before he’s broken in his ergonomic chair. On the other hand, a B-list candidate who doesn’t have the same caliber of resume may have better interpersonal skills and a stronger work ethic. Not only is he perhaps more suited for the position, but because his expectations are more aligned with yours, he’s likely to be happier in the job in the long run. Myth 3: When I meet the right candidate, I’ll know it. A lot of managers go into the recruiting process assuming that when they see the right candidate, they’ll know it. But recruiting isn’t dating – the right candidate isn’t going to make your heart race or your palms sweat. In fact, chemistry has very little to do with it. Recruiting is a step-by-step process and each stage provides an opportunity to narrow in on the right applicant, so it’s essential that your hiring team be adept at developing job descriptions, culling resumes, conducting productive interviews, assessing relevant job skills,

and evaluating one candidate’s competencies relative to another. In addition to all that, your hiring team also has to be able to sell the job and your company, because there’s nothing worse than finding Mr. or Ms. Right and getting rejected when you extend the job offer. If you don’t have the right people in-house, consider outsourcing your recruiting to a team of HR professionals that can manage the entire process for you. Recruiting isn’t a science that can be isolated in a lab. Test results can’t tell a candidate’s complete story. Recruiting takes human interaction and input, but it’s certainly not a dating game either. You shouldn’t base a hiring decision entirely on a gut instinct or an emotional response. Recruiting is a methodical process that requires time, discipline and patience, but when executed effectively, absent of shortcuts and myths, it can significantly contribute to your company’s ultimate goal of productivity and profits. Boerne Seeking Photos and Stories on Veterans When Boerne’s Veterans Park reopens in November, an important part of the experience will include an interpretive panel displaying names and photographs of each veteran listed on the original Memorial Wall which was erected in 1923. The city of Boerne is asking for assistance from the community to tell the stories of these veterans. “As we begin the final phases of construction at the park, we are developing a large panel that provides information on the history of the park along with the conception and development of the original memorial stone,” said Danny Zincke, director of city’s

Texas Home Sales Slowing, But Market Still Strong

T

he latest existing single-family home sales figures for Texas show a marked slowdown in sales activity growth, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Sales were down 1 percent last month from August 2013, and year-to-date sales for 2014 are only 0.7 percent higher than they were this time last year. In 2013, monthly sales were generally anywhere from 15 to 20 percent above previous year’s levels. “Keep in mind that 2013 was the second best year ever for home sales,” said Real Estate Center Research Economist Dr. Jim Gaines. “By staying at the same level, 2014 will end the year equal to the second best year ever. That’s good news. As difficult as home loan financing has become, sales volume in the state has remained at a near record level reflecting the economic and population growth the state has experienced in the past several years.” Home prices continued to climb but at a slower rate than they did last year. Median home prices are up about 7 percent year over year — a healthy increase but less than the nearly 10 percent increase of a year ago. Months’ inventory, or balance between supply and demand, continues to be tight, dropping below four months at 3.8 months of inventory. The number of listings has fallen almost 4 percent, but the rate of decline is much slower than it was last year. Gaines said the market is trying to move toward its long-term “normal” levels in terms of sales volume and home price appreciation, but it’s having some difficulty getting there. “Interest rates continue to be abnormally low, but credit underwriting is still tight,” he said. “The decline in lower-priced home sales is alarming, indicating difficulty for first-time buyers and first-move-up buyers. The estimated 2014 market share of sales for homes priced under $70,000 is about 7 percent compared with almost 35 percent of all sales in 1996 and nearly 15 percent in 2011." August 2014 housing data for all Texas Multiple Listing Service areas are posted on the Center’s website, www.recenter.tamu.edu. BBM Real Estate Center Online News
