Getting ReAdy for FAll Fun in Boerne

R

Recently I had the chance to once again thank almost two hundred of our city employees for their work and commitment to public service at our annual employee appreciation luncheon. These are electricians, librarians, police officers, planners, youth sports coordinators, landscapers, street maintenance crews, firefighters, and more. We also congratulated forty members of the city team for reaching their 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of service milestones. I am honored to work with these terrific folks. A career in government service can certainly have its ups and downs, but every one of these city employees is devoted to making Boerne the best it can be for today and for future generations. Unless you have been out of the country recently, I am sure you have heard or read that Buc-ee’s is planning to build a travel center along IH10 in Boerne. This is a huge win for Boerne and Kendall County; and yes, I am completely aware that not everyone shares my opinion on this. Those of you that have visited a Buc-ee’s somewhere in Texas, I know you get it; those that have not, really should check one out on your travels to learn just why they are not considered a truck stop. One of the other major puzzle pieces associated with this project includes a revised construction schedule for the IH10 frontage roads and bridges in Boerne. The Texas Department of Transportation has moved these mobility projects up on their timeline partly to coincide with the Buc-ee’s project. Sure, there are mixed feelings about these recent developments; but most are very excited about all of the positive benefits this will bring to our area – especially jobs! Economic Development is vital to our town because new businesses help bring in sales tax revenues to support the cost of public services. New businesses also bring new jobs which translates to new spending in the community. This is the fundamental work of our Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation. This group includes representatives from throughout this community who are committed to Boerne’s prosperity – but NOT at any cost. Potential businesses are carefully evaluated and agreements are structured to bring about the best possible outcomes for Boerne and Kendall County. I believe this collaboration is one of the many efforts that sets Boerne apart from other communities. While we often have differing opinions on a specific project or budget related matter, we all are working together for the greater good. Continuous improvement means being responsible and accountable to the residents and business owners in this area, and working as a team we can accomplish much for Boerne without sacrificing our hill country identity. The recently completed Herff Road mobility project is a perfect example of local government public/private collaboration. While many lament that it took longer than expected – which we all know is consistent with transportation improvement projects anywhere; it is finally done and many are already enjoying this new route to work, home, or school. A reminder to folks driving through Boerne on Sunday through Thursday evenings – TXDOT is repaving sections of State Hwy 46 along River Road from Main Street out to Esser Road. All work is being done at night beginning at 9 p.m. We have a few restaurants along this area and I know some people tend to park along River Road; just be aware that TXDOT has asked that no cars be parked along there on Sunday through Thursday evenings or they will tow those cars to get their work done. Are you ready for some fall fun? October in Boerne and the surrounding hill country is one month of the year when there are activities for all ages and desires - football games, car shows, festivals, art shows, campouts, musical performances, and so much more. I hope to see you and your family out and about at some of our free community events.

Are you looking for a fitness studio that offers more than just a place to workout? Kathleen Greathouse, owner of Elegance and Life, has created a charming Barre studio right in the heart of Boerne that fills all of your fitness needs and more! Not only are the Barre exercises offered at e+l amazing, but their Barre Lounge offers designer athleisure apparel and the sense of community among the studio’s clientele is oh-so inviting. Overlooking Boerne’s beautiful River Road Park, the e+l studio has a calming, spa-like vibe. “We want our clients to feel like this is their release for an hour out of their day. A place where they can leave their daily stresses at the door and take time for themselves. Our hope is that they leave feeling refreshed and recharged,” said Greathouse. But don’t let the calm, soothing environment fool you. The classes offered at e+l offer a comprehensive, total body workout that incorporates major muscle groups in such a unique way that they literally reshape the whole body. The techniques used create a more elegant and elongated physique, without adding bulk. "We've taken group fitness to another level by devoting our personal training to not only challenge your body's strength and endurance, but by providing a fun and upbeat workout increasing one's overall fitness goals," Kathleen added. The e+l Barre workout is low impact, so no jumping or bouncing occurs during class making this the perfect workout to protect your joints! The instructors ensure that

each client is aware of their "working zones" and are in the proper form as safety is their number one concern. e+l Barre classes are tailored to challenge each client based upon their individual fitness level as they offer modifications for each muscle exercise as needed. There is no need to take a beginner class, just jump into one of their regular Barre Classes or the newest cardio Barre Intensive Class that works best for your schedule. e+l’s clients are of all ages and fitness levels, so whether you raise higher on the balls of your feet, or maybe work deeper in your "working zone," the instructors ensure that you are challenged individually and as they say, "Embrace your Shake!" During an e+l class you work each muscle group to your point of fatigue as you sculpt and tone your entire body. “This is where you literally feel your muscles tremble! If your muscles are "shaking" then you've found your working zone and are working to make changes happen! Maybe close your eyes, breathe

men are more than welcome as well. Each class offers plenty of personal attention, but for those who might feel more comfortable with one-on-one instruction or want to target specific areas, private classes are available as well. “Many of our private sessions are with our men clients, or couples who want to come in and workout together,” said Greathouse. Designer Athleisure Apparel & Lifestyle Boutique e+l offers active wear and lifestyle apparel to suit your individual needs with the perfect fusion of fashion, performance, and function. Whether you are a runner trekking through Boerne, taking one of their strength training Barre Classes, rejuvenating in a Yoga continued on page 14

through it, and give it all you've got. If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you," said Greathouse. Barre classes challenge the body’s strength and endurance through small, isometric movements with the use of a set of hand weights, resistance bands, a core ball, a Pilates ring and a ballet Barre for support in the resistance, strength training Barre classes. Each workout is strategically set to fun and upbeat music. “Because we incorporate the use the ballet Barre, many people assume that you need a background in dance in order to take a class, however, absolutely no dance experience is required!” added Greathouse. While the majority of E+l’s clients happen to be women,

Clients Share What They A About e+l During the summer of 2014, I was looking for a new and challenging way to work out that would strengthen and tone my muscles but still be gentle on my joints. I had total replacements of both knees in 2011 and could no longer run or do any high impact exercises. I had seen the e+l Barre Studio in Boerne and decided to venture in. After one class, I was hooked and have never looked back. The combination of ballet, pilates, and yoga provides a very challenging workout to all your muscle groups but is very easy on the joints. Even though we do not do any high impact moves, my heart rate is up and I am still dripping with sweat after every class. This is the perfect combination! The instructors are also very welcoming and work hard to ensure that you are doing the moves correctly to obtain the most benefit. An added bonus for me is that Barre classes have helped me improve my horseback riding skills because they have tremendously improved my balance and core strength. Barre is the way to keep moving at any age! – Kim A Henke e+l Barre has completely transformed my body. When I moved back to Boerne from graduating college I needed a work out that got me back in shape. I never was one to just go run or work out on my own. With e+l, the motivation and challenge from the instructors is what pushes me to want to challenge myself even more. I LOVE the feeling of the burn and shake in every position we are in. e+l Barre targets every muscle in your body, even the muscles you didn't think you had. I now crave going to class and working out (totally not me before I found e+l). I don't know what I would do if I didn't have e+l Barre in my life. – Brooke Pollock I have been a client of Elegance and Life Barre in Boerne for two and a half years. I try to be in class five days a week. That may sound like a lot of exercise, but I go not only for the exercise program. Kathleen creates an environment that is so friendly, and she encourages you to do your best no matter what level you happen to be on that day. I find the combination of ballet, yoga, and Pilates to be a perfect combination for me. I think the Barre exercises are good no matter if you are just starting to get fit or are trying to stay as fit as you can be. All the instructors are so willing to help if you have particular areas you need work with. I also just love to spend a few minutes after class chatting with the other women that come to class. I think they are all quite wonderful. I am always in such a good mood when I leave the studio. I encourage women, no matter what your age to keep moving, and have fun. – Martha Witherow boernebusinessmonthly.com

Class, or pumping it up at cross-fit, their goal is to bring fashionable clothing to your active and balanced lifestyle while doing things that inspire you! According to Kathleen, “We offer only the best, exclusive brands, that are moisture wicking and fit to curve and compliment every body! Our newest brand Niyama Sol offers high waisted leggings or crops that are made from recycled plastic bottles! Our space-dye leggings, capris, and tanks from Beyond Yoga are made from the softest, most comfortable fabric that you literally will want to live in! Then there is DYI! An amazing line created out of Houston that holds our hearts as their amazing prints and high waisted spandex fabric holds you in in all the right places! Let's face it, highwaisted leggings are here to stay and we do not mind one bit! We love having Chaser Brand and Spiritual Gangster as an addition to our fitness lines, as its fun to throw on a comfortable graphic tee or a "love knit" sweater with leggings and pop in for coffee at one of our local spots after class! If you see women in Boerne in FUN printed leggings, most often they come from our studio!” Greathouse added, “We owe most of the credit and success of our Athletic Couture to our beloved Barre Instructor, Barre Lounge Manager, and fashion expert, Shelby Egan. She has helped transform our Barre Lounge with her flair for style and fashion. Shelby has a very special talent for creating innovative color stories with our athletic and lifestyle pieces, pairing each piece with maybe a tank or pullover, adding a few of our Lily and Laura bracelets and in turn taking your workout apparel to the streets! You can also catch Shelby at one of our favorite local boutiques, Ella Blue.” e+l Barre Lounge also offers brands from Alo Yoga, Glyder, Splits 59, Shashi, Fit Fit Active and they are excited for more to come! They have recently expanded the hours of the Barre Lounge for more convenient shopping hours for the walk-in customers. Stop in Monday through Thursday from 9am-5pm, or Friday and Saturday from 9am until 2pm. Community Events & Pop-Up Classes e+l is constantly thinking of creative and fun ways to engage their clients and encourage fitness among the community. They have fun events each month such as Ladies Night and Bring on the Men that allow their clients to socialize and let loose a little, after a Barre workout of course. Something new for e+l is their Pop-Up Classes. Their first Pop-Up Class was held on a Saturday morning at Boerne’s Main Plaza and more will be “Popping Up” each

month. Follow E+l on Facebook and Instagram to be sure not to miss the Pop-Up Class in your neighborhood! These classes are free to the public and offer a great way for the community to give Barre classes a try. Bring a friend and a yoga mat or towel and enjoy the class! BBM

by Joseph Lilli | photo by Ed Hall

Jay Hester never started out to be a famous Western artist. In fact, he never gave art a thought until he stumbled upon it almost by accident. An excellent athlete and former captain of his high school football team that won an Alabama state championship, Hester decided upon a career in coaching. So he enrolled at Samford University in Birmingham as a physical education major. “Somewhere in the middle of my schooling, I took an elective art class. I discovered I really enjoyed it,” he says. “My professor was a portrait painter, and with his inspiration and influence, I found I excelled in this area,” Hester confides.

Renowned Boerne Artist Discovers His Talent By Accident

“I even made a little income painting portraits of my friends and their girlfriends. Soon after I changed my major and finished college with an art degree.” Considering he once seemed destined to become an athletic coach, it’s fortunate for art lovers that Hester found his true calling early in life. The next stop on his career path was Los Angeles, where he further honed his painting skills at the prestigious Art Center College of Design. After a short stint considering ad agencies in New York, a locale he thoroughly disliked, he worked as an illustrator for Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, Georgia. Eventually compelled to go out on his own, Hester

began working as a freelance artist. Running a studio and small frame shop outside of Atlanta, he also produced commissioned paintings, sold art supplies, and taught students. During this same time, he worked the East Coast art show circuit before moving in 1973 to Rockport, Massachusetts, the scene of a thriving art colony. After returning to the Southeast, a friend urged him to meet his sister who headed the New Mexico Film Commission. Go West, Young Man Heeding his friend’s urging, Hester headed to Santa Fe in 1980 where he discovered a rich artistic culture and a wealth of picturesque Native Americans and other western subjects. Fascinated by the west, its legends and traditions, he began to forge his reputation as a western artist. While in Santa Fe, Hester was introduced to some teachers visiting from Texas. Attracted to one of them, he began courting her. Several months later, they married. After having decided to move his studio to Texas, Hester bid Santa Fe adios and joined his wife Judy in Lubbock. Five years later, enroute to visit Judy’s mother in Alice, they stopped off in Boerne for lunch. This stopover proved to be eventful, as he quickly fell in love with Boerne’s small-town charm. “I told Judy, ‘This is a quaint little town.’ I then contacted the Chamber of Commerce, got some information about Boerne, and soon after we moved here. That was in 1988,” he recalls. With his focus on the arts, Hester became a key figure in Boerne developing and promoting a robust community of local artists. It’s no wonder Gabriel Delgado, director of the J.R. Mooney Galleries in Boerne, calls him the “Godfather” of the Boerne art community. Today, nearly 30 years after Hester’s arrival in Boerne, there are more than 40 artists in a group called the Boerne Professional Artists. Each Spring they host a studio tour called the Parade of Artists, and in mid-October they sponsor The Hill Country Invitational in the Cana Ballroom at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Texas – “Stories of the Land” On Saturday, October 8th, the J. R. Mooney Galleries will spotlight 13 Lena’s Legend: A gift for Dr. Herff from the Chief whose eyesight was restored. of Hester’s latest oil paintings in his first solo show in more than 20 years. She was adopted into the German community and became important in her Titled: Texas – “Stories of the Land,” this exhibition will feature a variety of own right, later marrying one of the leaders. pieces based on fact and legend of the early settlers and Native Americans living in and around Boerne during the 1800s. canvas in order to recreate the historic details. True to his meticulous nature, Hester performed extensive research before putting brush to This gave him greater insight and empathy, which he conveys in his paintings. One of his paintings, a 48” x 60” masterpiece, pays tribute to legendary Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig von Herff of Boerne. Herff, a German-educated physician who helped colonize Boerne, co-founded San Antonio’s first private infirmary in 1869, which later became Santa Rosa Hospital. What Hester beautifully captures on canvas is Herff in 1847 performing a cataract operation on a Comanche chief. Herff laid the chief down under the bright sunlight and performed a bilateral cataract extraction, successfully restoring the Indian’s eyesight. This was the first known cataract surgery performed in Texas. Another Hester painting depicts an event that occurred years later in front of the Herff farm. “Apaches had raided the area near the Herff farm on Cibolo Creek in Boerne. But Leaving No Trail: Jack Hays and his Apache scout learned from each other and formed a bond of trust as they explored the area around Joshua Creek.

when this band of warriors came to Herff’s farm, they shot an arrow with a white feather into his gate, meaning ‘don’t bother this man.’ They had remembered that Herff had treated many of their people and had gained their respect,” Hester explains. While these and other Hill Country stories will be visually recreated by Hester, they also will be accompanied with historical accounts as well. Semi-Retired? Hester turns 77 next Spring, so to make life easier he’s pulled out of galleries around the Southwest. And while he says he’s semi-retired, it’s hard to believe. After all, besides his work on “Stories of the Land,” he recently placed a large bronze monument of George Mitchell on the Texas A&M Galveston campus and is preparing work on another bronze commissioned piece for the Helotes ranch of retired Senator Phil Gramm. Should Hester ever shutter his studio, it’s fortunate that a large body of his work can be seen locally as well as throughout Texas and across America in many public collections. He has produced commissioned paintings for Texas Tech University and Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, the Zaragosa Theater at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and USAA in San Antonio, to name a few.

Frontier Code: Alfred Giles, an architect from England, soon learned the code of the frontier when he and a group of frontiersmen were encountered by a band of Comanche as they surveyed Kendall County. The guns in the air meant we won’t shoot if you don’t shoot, their horses were placed back to back in a circle.

His monumental bronze sculptures grace The Woodlands, near Houston, Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, and Boerne’s Veteran’s Park. “Lasting Friendship,” in Fredericksburg’s Markt Platz, depicts three heroic- size figures signing the treaty between the Comanches and German settlers. This October 8th, from 4 to 8 p.m., Boerne residents can enjoy a “triple” treat at the J.R. Mooney Galleries. They can meet Hester, view his latest creations on display, and celebrate the great history of Texas. See ya there! BBM

by Dr. Michael Garcia, D. C. company delivers the goods. In my opinion, there are two companies that used to purchase the BEST underlayment foam from China. The two companies are TempurPedic and Classic. About 4 years ago, in an effort to please the American consumer, TempurPedic stopped using firmer foam and moved to an inferior product (when they revised their line). The inferior foam also releases more toxins than the previous better foam. This is not meant to tear down TempurPedic by any means and I am sure people love theirs. The purpose here is to assist you in making the best decision on something you will spend a third of your life on. The CLASSIC SILHOUETTE 8 can be found at www.amazon. com. It is an excellent mattress that has no springs with a 2’’ top layer of softer foam and an 8’’ firmer underlayment foam. The foam used is less toxic which is something to consider. The mattress comes vacuum-sealed, boxed and shipped to your home. The price is attractive as well with a King selling around $275. As with any mattress that is sealed you should let it air out 1-3 days before using it. Make sure you use a platform bed or high quality box spring with any foam mattress. If you insist on a coil and foam mattress, I recommend that you look into the Simmons Black Line Alexa. We get asked this question multiple times a week and without a doubt, a good supportive bed can keep your spine in an optimal position throughout the night. Patients that have a supportive bed seem to have one less thing getting in the way of correcting the structure of their spines. As a disclaimer: These mattresses are on the firmer side. They are meant to keep you supported through the night and will do so. Your muscles and tissues will need to get used to the different pressures on them. Allow some time to adapt and try to alternate nights on the mattress if needed. We wish you a good night’s rest! BBM

Purchasing a mattress can be like going to buy a car, it can be daunting and just plain difficult! There are so many choices and things to consider. Firm or soft, foam or spring, big retailer or Amazon? As a person who focuses on spinal structure, I am naturally concerned with how people support their spine and nervous system throughout the night. Just to be clear, I don’t think there is a one size fits all mattress. It really comes down to the quality of material and what
