September is here and for a lot of us that means that school is back in session, kids’ sports are starting up and the adults can get back to a more normal exercise routine as well. With all of this new activity we thought it would be great to feature the Orthopedic Performance Institute this month! OPI specializes in adult and pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine. They can handle everything from back-to-school sports physicals to pain management and even more serious injuries should they occur. Read all about OPI starting on page 16. Also in this issue we feature a couple of fun events that are taking place soon, both which benefit great causes. Good Vibrations is a music and arts festival that benefits local SA nonprofit Aid the Silent. The event benefits Aid the Silent’s efforts to provide accessibility and equality to deaf youth. Find out more about this great event on page 22.

Why not take the family out on October 13th to the Family Ranch Rodeo Fest at the Kendall County Youth Ag & Equestrian Center? It’s sure to be a fun time watching real cowboys perform actual day-to-day ranching tasks such as rounding up cattle for doctoring, branding, and loading for transport. Ten teams—many from Kendall County—will compete for prize money, buckles, and other awards. Turn to page 28 and learn about all the fun activities they have planned for this event! Also in this issue, Ron Warden of Edward Jones shares with us what life insurance can do for your family, we have a calendar of events filled up with lots of great local activities and we share some great accomplishments of our local businesses! I hope you all have a great September,

2018 Tax Rate Received a Haircut,

T

if You Have Proper Planning and Structure by Ashley Brand, CPA

The maximum individual tax rate in 2017 was 39.6%, and the rate for 2018 is now 37%. However, depending on your sources of income, your maximum rate could be 29.6%. One goal of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), passed into law last December, was to simplify taxation, and for many, the 2019 filing season will be simpler. The increase to the standard deduction, elimination of personal exemptions and some miscellaneous itemized deductions, and other various provisions that affect individual filers will simplify tax returns for millions. Additionally, the tax rate for C Corporation net income is a flat 21%. However, if you are a business owner and have elected to treat the business as a flow-through entity (S Corporation, Partnership or Sole Proprietor), your tax returns may be more complicated. The TCJA includes a significant tax break for these types of entities due to the Section 199A deduction, also known as the 20% Qualified Business Income Deduction (QBID), but the rules for this deduction are far from simple.

8

B oerne B usiness M onthly | September 2018

The purpose of the deduction is to closely align the rates of flow through entities with regular C Corporations. The deduction is the lesser of (1) the “combined qualified business income” of the taxpayer, or (2) 20% of the excess of taxable income over the sum of any capital gain. “Combined qualified business income” is defined as the lesser of (1) 20% of the taxpayer’s “qualified business income” (QBI) or (2) the greater of (a) 50% of the W-2 wages from the business or (b) the sum of 25% of the W-2 wages from the business plus 2.5% of the unadjusted basis of qualified property in the business. QBI is a taxpayer’s net trade or business income effectively connected to earnings from the United States or Puerto Rico. QBI excludes investment income such as interest, dividends, capital gains, annuities and wages or guaranteed payments received by the taxpayer. The deduction phases out if the taxpayer is engaged in a “specified service trades or businesses” (SSTB) and if the taxpayer’s taxable income exceeds $315,000 for a joint return and $157,500 for a single

filer. The deduction phases out entirely when taxable income exceeds $415,000 and $207,500 respectively. Not simple! We haven’t even addressed uncommon types of income that may qualify for the QBI deduction. Planning opportunities abound, and conversations with your tax advisor must take place now to maximize the deduction and minimize your tax burden. One of the first questions to consider involves entity selection. If you’re currently taxed as a flow-through entity, should you elect to be taxed as a C Corporation? Or, will the taxation of distributions from the entity (dividends) eliminate any benefit the new 21% flat tax rate will bring? Since the 20% deduction phases out for SSTBs when taxable income levels are exceeded, a C Corporation might be an alternative. But don’t jump the gun on the conversion. We believe this will not be the best option in many cases. A second area of consideration is wages. You could adjust owner and employee wages and bonuses up or down to maximize on the deduction. Partnerships and sole proprietorships are not allowed to pay the owner a wage. If you exceed certain income levels, W-2 wage limitations kick in; therefore, consider an S election so that the owners can receive a wage, thus increasing the W-2 wage limitation. There is also a “reasonableness” requirement related to S Corporation shareholder wages, so adjusting those wages down may or may not be an option. The use of independent contractors reduces W-2 wages; therefore, one better answer may be to convert the independent contractors to W-2 employees. The QBID is calculated on a business-by-business basis. If a taxpayer is engaged in several separate business activities, some generating qualified business income but paying no wages, the deduction could be limited or not allowed at all. On the other hand, if the taxpayer’s other business is generating losses and paying substantial wages, again no deduction may be allowed because no qualified business income would be generated. In this scenario, employees and depreciable assets along with the positioning of income producing assets amongst the activities should be strategically considered. If you engage in a SSTB and your taxable income projection exceeds taxable income limitations, then consider income reducing strategies. These could include increasing retirement plan contributions, increasing charitable contributions (if you are still able to itemize), accelerating deductions, and/or deferring income. “Married filing separate” filing status may also be a better option if one of the spouse’s income is causing joint income to exceed limitations. While the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has simplified taxes for many taxpayers, the complexity for small business owners has greatly increased. If you own a business, whether as a regular C Corporation or a flow-through, you should speak to a qualified CPA. A maximum tax rate of 29.6% sure beats 37%! How Can Life Insurance Help You? You may not be aware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. Of course, you probably recognize, at least in a general sense, the importance of life insurance, but do you know the various ways in which it can help you? Life insurance can play a sizable role in your ability to achieve some important financial goals, such as these: Helping your family maintain its lifestyle – If you are married and have young children at home, you and your spouse may need to work. If you were no longer around and your earnings were gone, could your family still afford to live as they do now? Adequate life insurance can help them preserve their lifestyle. Helping your children continue their education – Even if you weren’t planning to foot the entire bill for your children’s college education, you still might be doing what you can, such as contributing to a 529 education savings plan. If your income was lost, could your family still afford to continue these contributions? With enough life insurance, you can improve the chances that your children will at least get some financial help for college or vocational training.

Helping your survivors pay off debts – Are all your debts paid off? If not, you could be leaving your family on the hook for some of them, such as credit cards and car loans – not to mention your mortgage. Also, as uncomfortable as it may be to consider it, funeral and burial costs can easily run into the thousands. The proceeds of your life insurance policy can help pay down debts, handle your final expenses – and relieve your family of costly burdens. Helping your spouse build resources for retirement – It’s almost impossible for most of us to save too much for retirement. Your spouse may already have some retirement accounts, such as a 401(k) and an IRA, but will these be enough to sustain a long retirement? Through life insurance, you can potentially add significant amounts to your spouse’s retirement assets. As we’ve seen, you can accomplish a lot with life insurance. But how much do you need? If you want the appropriate amount of coverage, you should consider a variety of factors. How much do you earn? How much does your spouse earn? How many children do you have? How old are they? How much do you owe on your home? By answering these and other, similar questions, you can arrive at a coverage level that’s suitable for your needs. Also, keep in mind that those needs will change – for example, if your children are grown and you’ve downsized your living arrangements, you may require less insurance than at earlier times in your life. Life Insurance Awareness Month is a good time to remind yourself of the importance of insurance and of the need to own the correct amount. So, review your coverage soon – after all, you can’t predict the future, but you can still prepare for it.BBM Ron Warden is a financial advisor for Edward Jones. 830.249.8286 www.edwardjones.com 1580 S. Specializing in Adult & Pediatric Orthopedics & Sports Medicine by Lauren Stumberg

The doctors at the Orthopedic Performance Institute are passionate about helping their patients achieve a better quality of life. “We all find orthopedics very rewarding because we are given the opportunity to see our patients get better and for the most part return to their every day activities through our care,” said Christopher Phelps, MD. Phelps is one of the Orthopedic Performance Institute’s three orthopedic surgeons, which also include Matthew Dwyer, MD and Craig Glauser, MD. In addition, Alexandra Matthews, DO recently joined the practice to handle the sports medicine patients for the practice.

The Orthopedic Performance Institute is a comprehensive medical practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. The doctors at OPI are board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and licensed in Texas by the Texas Medical Board to deal with aspects of all orthopedic conditions both surgical and non-surgical. According to Dr. Dwyer, “Our patients are offered a highly trained and experienced staff that work hard to provide better outcomes for our patients’ recoveries.”

OPI sees patients of any age for anything from general orthopedics and sports medicine to total joint reconstruction and replacements. Dr. Matthews loves having the opportunity to combine primary care with sports medicine and orthopedics. “I get to see patients for both preventative issues as well as recovery,” said Dr. Matthews. “We have patients come in for the back to school sports physicals, which is a great time to talk about preventative medicine, for example rotator cuff strengthening exercises for volleyball players. But then other times I am helping patients recover from an injury or maybe a concussion. There is a lot of variety in orthopedics.” Dr. Matthews really enjoys getting to work with athletes and active individuals. “They have an innate desire to be healthy and to be able to watch them heal and return to their sport or activity is rewarding,” she added. OPI also implements the use of guided injections for pain management for conditions such as arthritis or tendon injuries. According to Dr. Matthews, “We implement ultrasound technology for our guided injections. This allows us the ability to get the medicine right where it needs to be.” “One of the benefits of OPI is that we try to improve the conditions of our patients through non-operative means, however if surgery is needed, we have three highly trained surgeons available to those patients and there is no need to have to go to a different practice. We find that continuity is key and to have all of the patient’s doctors working together cohesively provides great results,” said Dr. Glauser. Dr. Glauser is a fellowship trained foot and ankle specialist. “I provide both surgical and non-surgical care. I enjoy specializing on the feet and ankles because of the variety of injuries, from trauma to reconstruction. Our feet and ankles affect our ability to stand and walk and be active. There are not a lot of doctors who specialize in this area, but there is a large demand,” said Dr. Glauser. “I see patients for everycontinued on page 18

Dr. Dwyer, who is a general orthopedic surgeon, is passionate about shoulders and knees. “I do a lot of rotator cuff replacements, ligament reconstruction on knees and joint replacements. I really love the innovations in the field of arthroscopy, which a minimally invasive surgical procedure using an endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision,” said Dr. Dwyer. “When these minimally invasive techniques are implemented patients experience faster recovery times. We try to improve the outcome when we can through soft tissue sparing techniques.” Dr. Phelps, also a general orthopedic surgeon, focuses a lot of his medical efforts to conditions of the knees and hips. “I too love the new medical advances of the minimally invasive procedures. That is something that many patients find very attractive. To be able to have such a quick recovery is what really gives a lot of patients the confidence to have the surgery,” said Dr. Phelps. “Orthopedics was a

late decision for me in medical school. I had a lot of different interests, but what really made my decision for me was the ability to take someone who is severely crippled and be able to help them immediately and dramatically. Now I often see my patients three weeks after surgery and they are better than they ever were before, and that’s pretty cool!” For OPI, many of their patients come to them by word of mouth. They hear success stories from their family and friends and decide that they would like to have this improvement in their quality of life as well. “I have one patient that I operated on one of his knees and then both of his hips within a four to five year period. He has had such an excellent outcome that he has recommend probably 8-10 different people to us. He also allows us to have patients who are considering surgery to give him a call. He gives them the patient’s view of things, tells them what to expect and really calms their fears,” added Dr. Dwyer. The doctors at the Orthopedic Performance Institute are all doing what they can to push the field of orthopedics forward in their own special way. Their main location is based in the newly developed Stone Oak Methodist Hospital complex serving San Antonio, Texas and the surrounding communities. OPI also has practice locations in Boerne and Bulverde. BBM

benefitting local SA nonprofit

Texas-based nonprofit for the deaf and hard-of-hearing (HOH), Aid the Silent, partners with hearing-solution industry leaders to host second annual all-accessible festival in San Antonio, TX. The Good Vibrations Music & Arts Festival (GVMAF), open to hearing individuals and persons with hearing loss, will take place at the historic Sunken Garden Theater Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 1 p.m. – 11 p.m. The event is an official Tricentennial Community Partner that will honor San Antonio and Bexar County’s 300th anniversary. GVMAF benefits Aid the Silent’s efforts to provide accessibility and equality to deaf youth. The Good Vibrations Music & Arts Festival is an all-day, familyfriendly event featuring popular musicians Parachute, American Idol winner Kris Allen, Penny & Sparrow, Willow City, Zoë Nutt, Ryan Scott Travis, Emma Faye Rudkin, Sarah Spivey and Adopted Kids. With dozens of vendor booths, games and photo opportunities, there is something for everyone to enjoy. GVMAF is open to people of all ages. The festival highlights accessibility and inclusiveness of individuals with hearing loss bringing the hearing world together with

deaf individuals. The festival is a 10-hour concert, which features eight performances that showcase real-time captioning, on-stage sign language interpretation, looping technology that transmits sound directly into hearing aid wearers’ devices, wearable audio technology that translates high-fidelity sounds into vibrations, an LED dance floor and a visual sound wave board that is synchronized to the tempo of the music.

Platinum sponsors, Cochlear Americas and Ear Institute of Texas, have partnered with the festival to benefit Aid the Silent—a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to advocating for the deaf/hard-of-hearing community. Last year, thousands of people attended the inaugural event along with dozens of local artisans and food trucks. Several hearing-solution industry professionals from across the nation worked together with local businesses to help bring awareness about hearing loss and accessibility. “The festival was such a great event—the food, the music, it was all amazing. Not only was it a very memorable time overall, but I learned a lot about hearing loss, too. It was a great concert that allowed hearing people to experience music with those who are deaf—such an eye-opener,” San Antonio local Cathleen Johnson said. “I cannot wait for the next festival.” Last November, GVMAF won Best of the Fest-Charitable Music Fest in the FestForums Conference awards in Santa Barbara, California. Festivals across the United States are recognized in their respective categories: Film, Music, and Food & Beverage. And then broken down into sub categories: Charity, Sustainability, and Breakthrough. Aid the Silent helps deaf and hard-of-hearing children and teens receive equal access to opportunity by providing financial assistance to enhance communication methods; gain access to education resources; and to grow socially, educationally and spiritually. Aid the Silent’s goal is to give deaf/HOH children the same opportunities to excel as their hearing peers. BBM

REAL COWBOYS! REAL FUN!

T

FAMILY RANCH RODEO FEST EMBRACES VALUES KEY TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The American cowboy’s iconic image may be one of the romantic hero, but in reality the American cowboy is anything but a mythical character. The modern-day, ranching cowboy is alive and well embodying values that Americans strive to teach their children: courage, optimism, self-reliance, authenticity, honor, duty, and compassion. The Family Ranch Rodeo Fest at the Kendall County Youth Ag & Equestrian Center (KCYAEC) on October 13 will give folks a glimpse into the real day-to-day life of ranch cowboys and cowgirls and their outstanding character. Differing from a professional rodeo, the ranch rodeo features tasks that a cowboy regularly encounters: rounding up cattle for doctoring, branding, and loading for transport. Ten teams—many from Kendall County—will compete for prize money, buckles, and other awards. To reflect the very real makeup of many ranching families, the rules call for at least one of the four team members to be a female or a youth under the age of 17. The Family Ranch Rodeo Fest promises to be more than a rodeo. It will be an afternoon and evening of fun for the entire family featuring a dance with Jake Hooker & The Outsiders,

28

kids’ mutton busting, goat roping for all ages, a silent auction, and food and refreshment. Proceeds will support KCYAEC, home to 4-H, FFA, and Jr. Livestock members who participate in agriculture and equestrian activities, competitions, and educational enterprises. KCYAEC supports youth in many ways: • $10,000 in Scholarships in 2018 • Kendall Co. Jr. Livestock Show & Sale • Boerne & Comfort FFA Chapter Shows • Kendall Classic Steer Show • 4-H Horse Club Activities • 4-H Meetings • Horse and Wool/Mohair Judging • Annual, county-wide farm day for school children Specifically, Family Ranch Rodeo Fest funds will go toward scholarships, an arena/barn expansion project, and Center operations. This year KCYAEC was proud to award four $2,500 scholarships to Kendall County youth: Bella Hollis, Merina Jackson, Dustin Smith, and Jessica Spenrath. With 501 (c) (3) non-profit status, KCYAEC is the largest, weatherproof event center in the county. It operates with a large volunteer base and no paid staff. While the Center is offered free of charge throughout the year to youth, it is available for rental to help offset operating expenses. Many of these events have a positive impact on the county’s economy as visitors spend money at hotels, restaurants, and stores. “Our rental bookings include youth rodeos, junior market goat sales and sheep shows, team ropings, horsemanship clinics, dog trials, and a large marketday event with approximately 16,000 attendees total this past spring and in the spring of 2017. This event alone, during the past two years, was responsible for an estimated 332 room nights in Boerne generating more than $58,000 in total spending in the city,” said Andra Wisian, KCYAEC President. “There were also an

estimated 116 room nights booked in Kendall County outside the city limits.” Dating from 1939, the livestock program in Kendall County has a rich heritage, with many generations of the county’s youth learning to be productive, responsible leaders. For seven decades, hundreds of citizens have served as directors and volunteers for the Junior Livestock Association, while thousands of community members and business owners have supported the sale financially by purchasing animals and cheering on the young participants. Texas AgriLife Extension Agent Stephen Zoeller reports that membership in 4-H and FFA is up across the county, with around 400 youth expected to participate in the county show and sale set for January 11 and 12, 2019. “The 2018 sale hit above the million-dollar mark again with direct livestock purchases by bidders, plus addon money to individual participants. “To a lot of these kids, this is the start of their college savings,” said Zoeller.
