Do business owners need financial advisors? by Rich Barkley, Financial Advisor for Prime Capital Investment Advisors
M
Many small business owners spend a large portion of their lives starting, growing, building and transitioning their business which requires a large number of critical financial decisions. Should business owners consider the direct connection between their personal assets and business assets? Should business owners utilize a Financial Advisor? And tie the business into their comprehensive / customized financial plan? The answer is yes! Comprehensive Financial Plans take into account, a) Asset Allocation, b) Business Valuation, c) Succession Plans, d) Exit Strategies, etc. and all tie to the Retirement Plans of business owners. Business owners need to look into these different topics, as well as the funding of their Retirement Accounts. These complexities deserve solutions from a Financial Advisor. Some Financial Advisors may have a tendency not to give enough importance to a client’s business, and/or the businesses value. In many cases, business owners are over allocated in their small business. By definition, small businesses are often considered high risk investments. The business owner’s excuses are usually along the lines that “we are in control” or that “this is what we know” or that “we don’t have time”. Although these statements may have some validity, this should not be the reason to “put all of our eggs in one basket”. The business diversification should be as important as it is to an individual investor. Most of the time we focus on the daily battles of the business, the non-urgent issues are potentially not priority. Business Owners in many cases don’t “pull a few chips off the table” and continue to sink ALL resources back into their micro-market, high risk investment known as – The Business. There should be a plan, strategy by the Financial Advisor, that tie a financial Plan to Net Worth and the factors affecting Net Worth. Your net worth, in most cases, will obviously be tied to your business,
hence your business value. These Financial Plans incorporating the business value, and will add clarity, direction and will be correlated to the owner’s financial plan/strategy. The Business Owner’s Succession Plan is either a plan or no plan. The proper business succession is a series of strategies that reinforce and grows a business. This helps a business owner optimize value at time of exit. Will the business owner fully retire, sell to an outside buyer, transition to the next generation, simply step away? Business owners (Entrepreneurs) may have different mindsets and experiences than those who have not owned their own business. Many business consultants or professionals, have never owned and operated a business. The only constant variable in the financial world is change. There are numerous new resources in the financial world that should be considered by business owners. The focus should be to increase net worth and to impact trajectory of the Business Enterprise, toward Value and Growth. This all is directly correlated with the Retirement Vision, Estate Planning, Succession Strategy, Exit Plan and the goals, priorities of the business owner. So, should business owners work with a Financial Planner? BBM Rich Barkley is a financial advisor and investment representative for Prime Capital Investment Advisors (PCIA). Prior to joining PCIA, Rich was a small business owner in Boerne, TX. Rich uses his 16+ years of entrepreneurial experience to partner with high net worth individuals and business owners, providing customized financial solutions to their unique and specific financial goals. Rich and his wife have lived in Boerne for 25 years, and now have two daughters. In his spare time, Rich enjoys exercising, spending time outdoors and supporting the Boerne community.

We Are More
Why would you ignore pain in your legs? You wouldn’t ignore chest pain. Many times we don’t have time to deal with foot or leg pain or we just don’t consider leg pain to be a serious medical issue. However, leg pain can be an indicator of serious vascular problems or peripheral arterial disease also known as P.A.D. Peripheral arterial disease (P.A.D.) is a narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels in the legs, which leads to decreased blood flow or circulation problems. These circulation problems can reduce mobility and are associated with an increased risk of heart attack, stroke or even amputation. “Peripheral arterial disease is known as a “silent killer” because many patients have no visible symptoms,” said Dr. Mark Wengrovitz,
16
B oerne B usiness M onthly | September 2019
Vascular Surgeon with Peripheral Vascular Associates (PVA). “Some common factors of P.A.D. are fatigue, heaviness in the limbs, tiredness or cramping in the calf, thigh, or buttocks that occur during movement and disappear with rest; foot or toe pain when in a sedentary position, and skin wounds or ulcers that are slow to heal. These open wounds increase the risk for infection and can facilitate an amputation if left untreated.” In the U.S., approximately 8 million people suffer from P.A.D. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, one in every twenty Americans over the age of fifty has P.A.D. Peripheral arterial disease can reduce mobility and is associated with an increased risk of a heart attack and stroke and can be fatal if left untreated.
SEPTEMBER IS PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE (P.A.D.) AWARENESS MONTH “In the San Antonio and surrounding communities, the risks of developing P.A.D. is higher due to the increased prevalence of individuals with diabetes, smoking, and obesity related health issues,” said Dr. Seth Fritcher, PVA Vascular Surgeon. “But we are committed to bringing attention to and educating patients about this devastating disease.” While everyone over the age of fifty is at risk for P.A.D., the risk increases if a person: • Smokes, or used to smoke • Has diabetes • Has high blood pressure • Has abnormal blood cholesterol • Has a personal history of coronary artery disease or stroke For Dr. Fritcher and Dr. Wengrovitz, PVA Vascular Surgeons that provide care at the Boerne location, being able to drastically improve the quality of life for their patients is very rewarding. “We are saving lives and saving limbs in people that still have much life left to
pictured: Dr. Seth Fritcher and Dr. Mark Wengrovitz live,” said Dr. Wengrovitz. “Vascular is a very rewarding surgical specialty. It is extremely detailed and the cases are often not straight-forward. I enjoy the complexity of the cases,” added Dr. Fritcher. Both doctors agree that technological advances have revolutionized vascular medicine. “Now, many procedures that required surgeries with extensive recovery times can be done in minimally invasive ways, with patients going home the same day. Our practice is constantly changing, growing and evolving,” said Dr. Fritcher. continued on page 18
I Really Don’t Think I’d Be Here Today if Not For PVA
Lila Ward’s connection to PVA started back in late 1999. “Dr. Wengrovitz has been my doctor since that time and I think I might have been one of his first patients when he moved to San Antonio,” said Lila, from her home in Lake Hills, where she has lived since 1977. A mother of five, grandmother of nine and great grandmother of 10, Lila enjoys traveling to visit family as often as she can. When she’s at home, she loves volunteering, attending state political conventions and walking with her beloved dog, appropriately named My Lady. But over the years, Lila’s P.A.D. has kept her from traveling as much as she would like and has prevented her from walking without pain. In early 2000, she found herself in a hospital surgical holding room, at high risk of amputation. The revision surgery of an aortic femoral bypass had failed to restore enough blood flow to keep her leg working properly. When Dr. Mark Wengrovitz came in to speak with her, he told her he thought he could help and they agreed to try one last
time to save her leg. Dr. Wengrovitz performed an Axillobifemoral Bypass, a tricky procedure that links the axillary artery in the shoulder to the femoral arteries in the leg using a flexible plastic tube called a graft. This restores the blood supply to the leg. The surgery was a success and the rest is happy history. Nearly 20 years have passed since that fateful day. Lila still goes to PVA every six months for a checkup and she’s had revision surgeries a time or two over the years. “When I go in for my scans, I always see the same people and it’s good to see a familiar face,” she said. “They are very thorough and caring. They take their time with me and answer all my questions. The entire PVA staff is just a godsend for me.” Lila has high regard and warm feelings for her trusted doctor and surgeon, Dr. Wengrovitz. “He’s always there for me and he never gives up,” said Lila. “Today, my life is full and I am able to watch my grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. I am so grateful to PVA for that. boernebusinessmonthly.com

continued from page 17
“A lot of this is patient driven, there is significantly less open surgery and we now are able to do so much more non-invasively, which is what our patients want.” According to Dr. Wengrovitz and Dr. Fritcher, most of the patients that they see don’t require surgery. Instead, the doctors at PVA use their surgical and medical knowledge to advise patients on how to get back to a normal lifestyle. “Some of our patients have been with us 20 years. Vascular disease isn’t curable, but we can put a program in place to help them get their life back. We develop lifelong bonds with our patients,” said Dr. Wengrovitz. Peripheral Vascular Associates, or PVA, was founded in 1975 and has become one of the largest single specialty vascular groups in the nation. With 20 vascular surgeons and 18 convenient clinic locations throughout South Texas, PVA is committed to offering quality vascular care for every patient, every day. Vascular surgeons are the only specialists extensively trained to provide all treatment options including diagnostic ultrasound testing, medical management, minimally invasive balloon surgeries, stents, traditional surgery, and prosthetic care. No matter what stage of vascular disease a person may have, PVA can help. According to Dr. Wengrovitz, “We are committed to providing complete and comprehensive state-of-the-art care to the residents of San Antonio and South Texas. Our mission is to continually work with our physician colleagues in the management of any vascular problem, to provide education to the community about the risk factors associated with P.A.D., and to maintain our position as the leader in vascular care.” “Our Boerne location opened seven years ago,” said Dr. Fritcher,
“And in that time our practice here has grown right along with the town. On the days we are open here, our days are full. Dr. Wengrovitz and I see on average 30 patients in a day at the Boerne location. There is definitely a need here and we have plans to expand our Boerne clinic. We are here to serve this community. We are available to the local primary care physicians and are committed to developing vascular disease awareness in the community and improving the level of vascular care available here.” BBM

GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid) is a body’s inhibitory neurotransmitter, facilitating the calming, parasympathetic response of the nervous system. GABA receptors are found not only in the brain but also in the gut, suggesting they may help regulate healthy GI function. LTheanine is a calming amino acid found in high amounts in green tea. After supplementing with LTheanine, brain wave patterns can smooth out, much like they do with meditation. L-Theanine can balance mental strain. Together, these two amino acids gently support health and balance throughout the nervous system. Get 10% off during the month of September in store or online. Use promo code GABA.

REAL COWBOYS! REAL FUN!
T
FAMILY RANCH RODEO FEST EMBRACES VALUES KEY TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
by Andra Wisian
The modern-day, ranching cowboy is alive and well, embodying values that Americans strive to teach their children: courage, optimism, selfreliance, authenticity, honor, duty and compassion. The Family Ranch Rodeo Fest at the Kendall County Youth Ag & Equestrian Center (KCYAEC) on October 12 will give folks a glimpse into the real day-to-day life of ranch cowboys and cowgirls and their outstanding character. Differing from a professional rodeo, the ranch rodeo features tasks that ranch hands regularly encounter such as rounding up cattle for doctoring and loading for transport. Ten teams—many from Kendall County—will compete for prize money, buckles and other awards. To reflect the very real makeup of many ranching families, the rules call for at least one of the four team members to be a female or a youth under the age of 17.

The Family Ranch Rodeo Fest promises to be more than a ranch rodeo. It will be an afternoon and evening of fun for the entire family featuring a dance with Jake Hooker & The Outsiders, mutton busting, goat roping, kids’ activities, silent and live auctions, food and refreshment.

All the proceeds from the event will support KCYAEC, a 501 ( c ) (3) non-profit that operates with a large volunteer base and no paid staff. The Center is home to some 400 4-H, FFA and Jr. Livestock members who participate in agriculture and equestrian activities, competitions and educational enterprises. KCYAEC supports youth in many ways: • $20,000 in Scholarships in 2018 & 2019 • Kendall Co. Jr. Livestock Show & Sale • Boerne & Comfort FFA Chapter Shows • 4-H Horse Club Activities • 4-H Meetings • Horse and Wool/Mohair Judging • Annual, county-wide farm day for school children • Positive youth development programs This year KCYAEC was proud to award four $2,500 scholarships to Kendall County youth: Shelby Curry, Shanna Marquart, Kaysen Turk and Trent Wisian. While the Center is offered free of charge throughout the year to youth, it is available for rental to help offset operating expenses. The largest, weatherproof event center in the county, the Center is perfect for fundraising galas, corporate events and private parties. The venue is situated atop a bluff adjacent to Joshua Springs Park, and offers an open-air feel and beautiful Hill Country views. Many of the Center events have a positive impact on the county’s economy as visitors spend money at hotels, restaurants and stores. “Our rental bookings during the past year included youth rodeos, junior market goat sales and sheep shows, team ropings,

horsemanship clinics, dog trials and two large market-day events with approximately 12,000 attendees. These two events alone were responsible for an estimated 336 room nights in Boerne generating more than $57,000 in total spending in the city,” said Andra Wisian, KCYAEC President. “There were also an estimated 127 room nights booked in Kendall County outside the city limits.” This year the Center’s signature event, the Kendall County Jr. Livestock Auction awarded more than $1.4 million to exhibitors to go toward their higher education. Dating from 1939, the livestock program in Kendall County has a rich heritage, with many generations of the county’s youth learning to be productive, responsible leaders. For seven decades, hundreds of citizens have served as directors and volunteers for the Association, while thousands of community members and business owners have supported the sale financially by purchasing animals and cheering on the young participants. Junior Livestock Association President, Chad Upham, believes that agriculture undoubtedly provides youth with diverse opportunities to learn and develop skills. “It paves the way for higher education, successful careers, successful families and ultimately positive influences and contributors to our society,” said Upham. Texas Agrilife Extension Agent Stephen Zoeller says the 4-H program is growing in the county. “Our recent 4-H Info Night had a tremendous turnout with families who have recently moved to Kendall County,” said Zoeller. “These parents are seeking a more rural lifestyle and wholesome youth programs.” The Center is managed by a 13-member board of directors including five representatives from Junior Livestock, five from the 4-H Horse Club and three members from the community. Directors are Kathy Estes, Amor Galindo, Russell Garza, David Geistweidt, Debra Grandjean, Kristen Jay, Joe Lozano, Dwaine Rivers, Mark Weekley, Cliff Wheeler, Andra Wisian, Duane Zoeller and Wayne Zoeller.
