welcome If you’ve picked up this magazine, there’s a good chance that you like to hunt and enjoy some great food! We have all of that and then some! This year’s Boerne Wild Game Dinner will be held on Saturday, November 1st, at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, located at 1307 River Road in Boerne. The Chamber’s Wild Game Dinner was created in 2011 and has continued to grow each year. Our initial goal was a “community wide” event, but the dinner has grown to include visitors across Texas and the country. You’ll enjoy the amazing food, take part in hunting games, shop with our vendors and compete in the silent and live auctions. So, come on out and join in the fun! We’ve also been told on numerous occasions that we have “the best food” of any wild game dinner in the State of Texas! We were asked “how did you pick your cook teams?” Our answer was simple, “We’ve eaten their cooking!” In a small town, everybody cooks! You can expect a diverse range of wild game, which includes: fried alligator, chicken-fried Axis, bacon wrapped quail breasts, wild game pizza, crawfish pasta and too much more to mention! We hope you enjoy this year’s magazine, as well. We have stories on our cook teams, awesome hunts, generous donors, scholarship winners, recipes and a special story on how this event came to life. There are great stories and even better pictures! The Wild Game Dinner is a great place to bring the family and enjoy a beautiful Hill Country evening. We look forward to seeing you!

What’s Cookin’?
Going on four years now the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce Wild Game Dinner has been serving up thousands of pounds of some of the tastiest wild game you’ll ever have the pleasure to eat! While the food is second to none, what’s equally as impressive are the men and women who make up the cook teams. These guys and gals give of their time and energy, working tirelessly to prepare and cook the food that draws thousands of people from all over the Texas hill country and surrounding areas. Read on to meet a few of the cook teams and see what they will all be serving up on November 1st.
Maroon Out Grillers Maroon Out Grillers have been cooking for the Boerne Wild Game Dinner since it began four years ago. The team of Mike and Lynn Lang, DeVan Watts and his fiance Susan Luckett, Mike and Diane Arthur and Karen Daly offer the crowds something a bit on the exotic side – bacon-wrapped Nilgai! What’s a Nilgai you might ask? Nilgai antelope are the second largest member of the antelope family and native to the country of India. However, Nilgai were originally stocked on the King Ranch in the 1930’s and they quickly took hold. They are currently Mike Lang, DeVan Watts and Mike Arthur free ranging on a handful of large ranches in south of the Maroon Out Grillers Texas. The Maroon Out Grillers cook team made 1,200 Nilgai roll-ups at last year’s Wild Game Dinner and are expecting to do at least that many again this year, if not more! Mike Lang said “the meat was chosen because it was something that was available, but also different and something that most

Guess you’re just going to have come out to the 4th Annual Boerne Wild Game Dinner to try it for yourself!
Javelina Harley-Davidson This tough-guy cook team consists of Fernando Gomez and Emerson Arnold of Javelina HarleyDavidson. The biker duo can cook some mean barbecue and is going to be trying something a bit different at this year’s Wild Game Dinner. “This year we will be cooking what we are calling Hawg Wings,” said Arnold. “It is basically a cut of pork off of the shank that looks almost like a chicken wing.” Gomez added, “We will have a couple of different flavor varieties for everyone to try.” Participating in the Boerne Wild Game Dinner is something that Gomez and Arnold really enjoy. This will be Gomez’s third year to participate in the event and Arnold’s second. “We have a great time. It’s a lot of fun cooking and socializing with continued on page 10

everyone. We will keep coming back year after year as long as we’re invited,” said Arnold.
Hog Wild The Hog Wild team serves up some of the tastiest pulled-pork sliders you’ll ever bite into! To make enough pork to feed the crowds at the WGD, this team consisting of Carlin Friar, Justin Boerner, Brian D’Spain, Charlie Taliaferro and Scott Roberson works hard to cook anywhere from seven to nine wild hogs each year! “We quarter the hogs and cook them on our three mobile pits,” said Friar. “What’s unique about our team is that we cook all night long prior to the event, rather than the day of. Then we spend the next day shredding the pork and preparing it for the sliders.” When asked how they get those sliders to taste so good, Friar replied with “that’s Brian D’Spain’s secret recipe!” Friar, who is on the Board of Directors of the Boerne Chamber of Commerce pulled a team together to cook at the event and looks forward to it every year! “This will be my third year to participate at the WGD and we have a great time! It’s lots of fun and good fellowship. Plus it’s a good excuse to get to try all kinds of great wild game!”
Grill Billies The Grill Billies cook team means business! In addition to this being their third year to cook at the Boerne Wild Game Dinner they participate in competition barbecue cook-offs across the state of Texas. This is one of the largest cook teams at the Boerne Wild Game Dinner with members that include Wayne Zoeller, Darrell Bourgeois, Mando Giatan, Zack Feller, Duane Zoeller, Jodie Saurage, Lee Sandell, Wesley Zoeller, Colton Zoeller, Justin Zoeller and the help of countless other friends, family and wives. The Grill Billies serve up Jalapeno Bacon Wrapped Quail Breasts that are quite tasty! According to Wayne Zoeller, “Last year we made 1,500 quail breasts and they were all gone 45minutes after we started serving and it’s been like that for the last two years! Our quail breasts are definitely a crowd favorite.” Something new for the Grill Billies this year is that they will be cooking a whole hog for the event! When it comes to their recipes, Zoeller says it’s a lot of trial and error. “In the end, if we think it’s pretty good, then everyone else is gonna love it!” The Grill Billies say that they enjoy cooking for the Boerne Wild Game Dinner. “It’s just really a lot of fun. We enjoy doing it and have a good time!”
If you like to cook, now's your chance!
We have room for a few more cook teams. For more information, call Jennifer Wyle at Klein Smokehaus 830-249-8920. 10

An African Adventure
A
As the lucky winner of the African Safari that was auctioned off at the 2013 Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce Wild Game Dinner, John Kohler was able to experience the hunting trip of a lifetime. Kohler took the trip along with his friend Derek Canada and Canada’s teenage son Dylan. “We all really enjoyed ourselves on this trip,” said Kohler. “It was ten days of an amazing African safari. We hunted just about all day, every day except for a Saturday that we took off and went on a photo safari.”
12
Wild game Dinner | 2014
Kohler spoke very highly of the Antelope for Africa Safaris and the outfitter Melville du Plessis. “They run a very nice, clean, organized operation. Each trip can really be customized to meet the goals of the hunters. For us that meant getting up at 6:30 am and leaving for the day to hunt. You eat lunch in the field most days and then head back out to hunt some more! When you get back to the base camp in the evening you have a wonderful dinner waiting for you.” Kohler and Canada felt that the professional hunters were very knowledgeable and worked really hard to help them meet the goals of their safari. According to Kohler, “Before you even arrive, the Antelope for Africa Safaris ask you for a list of your top ten animals that you would like to shoot and their professionals hunters do their best to help you achieve that.” He added, “On the top of my list was a kudu and a gemsbok.” Kohler got his kudu and his gemsbok along with several other trophy animals. “Before I left I told my wife Lynda that I was going to shoot five animals, I ended up shooting ten,” laughed Kohler. “I figured I better enjoy it while I could, I may never get the chance to go back.” “This trip was well worth the money and an experience that I will treasure forever,” said Kohler. “The hunting was amazing, the scenery was beautiful and the accommodations were comfortable and safe.” Kohler enjoyed getting to try the many food varieties that were prepared for them daily. “We even got to try the meat from our hunts which was really cool and interesting.” “It was a truly enjoyable experience. The Antelope for Africa Safaris team cater to your every need. From freshly laundered clothes and delicious meals to helping you get your trophies back home, you are in good hands.” As the outfitter, Mel, told Kohler and Canada, “All you have to be able to do on this trip is eat and shoot straight, the rest will be taken care of for you!”

Celebrates 20 Years
Where do you get your local news? The Ranch Radio Group out of Kerrville believes local radio is a terrific source and that’s why for the past 20 years Mark Grubbs, owner and general manager of the group, has been so adamant about providing quality true country programming with exceptional on-air talent and world-class news coverage. Ranch Radio, 92.3 on your FM dial, enjoys the broadest coverage in the Texas Hill Country, 50,000 watts blasting out to Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Kimble counties. It features pure traditional country music, a great experienced team of DJs and local news, weather and traffic for the area it covers. They seem to have the winning formula because they celebrated their 20th Anniversary this past June. When Mark graduated from college he discovered he had no marketable skills. He took classes in broadcasting, thanks to the advice of his first mentor Robert P. Lacey, and he has always been gainfully employed ever since. His first job was selling advertising on a radio station in Corpus Christi where he met his second mentor, Ed Stern and told him “I want your job!” And the rest, as they say, is history! Soon enough Mark and another investor started The Ranch radio station. How did it get its name? Back in the day, people in San Antonio purchased small acreage (5 acres or so) out in the Hill Country for getaways and referred to “going out to the Ranch” as if their tiny holdings were the King Ranch. It was a sign of success, so Mark named his station after a symbol of status. It has been a sign of Mark’s success ever since. Mark and his radio station have been great community partners over the years in each of
14
Wild game Dinner | 2014
the major areas his station reaches. Just last year, Mark duct taped a pair of red stiletto heels to his feet and participated in the Kendall County Women’s Shelter’s “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” event. If you check out the 92.3 The Ranch Facebook page, you’ll see exam-
ples of the many organizations that benefit from his participation in fundraising efforts across the Hill Country. In early August, the Texas Association of Broadcasters presented 92.3 The Ranch the Bonner McLane Public Service Award for Small Market Radio in Texas. 2014 marks the second year that the Ranch Radio Group is the presenting sponsor for the Boerne Wild Game Dinner. As the leading sponsor, The Ranch logo appeared on every cup in 2013. This year, it’s a koozie with the logo that will keep your beer cold. Once again, there will be live remote broadcasts from the Wild Game Dinner and much more. Ranch Radio is also a partner in HillsHomePage.com, a digital news site that covers the Hill Country providing local news by county. Think of it as a monster community portal where you can, in one stop, find out what is going on in Boerne, Fredericksburg, Bandera, Kerrville and other hill country towns simultaneously. They offer free classifieds to every person who logs on and a wide variety of marketing opportunities, sure to fit every budget. The Ranch Radio Group exists for the Texas Hill Country. Let San Antonio be San Antonio. For real country music, news and weather, there’s only one place to go. When you are in the Texas Hill Country, tune your radio dial to 92.3 The Ranch, turn up the volume and roll your window’s down. Experience the real country vibe as only The Ranch can produce it.
ranchradiogroup.com Texas Association of Broadcasters presented 92.3 The Ranch the Bonner McLane Public Service Award for Small Market Radio in Texas BIG NEWS! The Texas Association of Broadcasters has named The Ranch Radio Group’s KRNH, 92.3 The Ranch as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Bonner McLane Community Service Award for outstanding contributions and community service. 92.3 The Ranch partnered with the Hill Country District Livestock Show in a week-long “Feed the Pig” campaign that raised money to purchase livestock raised by the youth in FFA, 4H and the Ag Community. KRNH provided both live broadcasts from the event – the fifth largest District Livestock Show in Texas. Ranch Radio Group owner Mark Grubbs said, “What an incredible honor! The Ranch
Radio Group serves many Texas Hill Country communities including Kerrville, Boerne, Bandera, Harper, Hunt, Medina, Ingram, Fredericksburg, Junction, plus many other towns, and has done so proudly for the past 20 years.” Ranch Radio Group’s Operations Manager Richard Lee said, “We are pleased and honored to bring recognition to the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show. With the eyes of the Great State of Texas upon us, we humbly accept this great honor. The awards event was apart of the Texas Association of Broadcasters’ 61st Annual Convention and Trade Show, August 6th and 7th, 2014 at Renaissance Austin Hotel, Austin Texas.
“
Boerne’s Wild Game Dinner is like an amusement park for adults! Don’t think it is some kind of buffet of fried venison! The food is awesome: well-prepared and lots of variety. I’ve heard others say the same thing about Boerne’s food when I am at other hill country wild game dinners. Come for the food, stay for the fun!

We know the best part of hunting is the actual hunting; however turning that deer into great tasting meat is a lot of work. The crew at Klein Smokehaus honors the rich heritage of Texas Hill Country hunting as well as the fine art of quality deer processing. So this season, you do the fun part, and leave the work to the folks at Klein Smokehaus! It all starts under the roof of the 6000 sq. ft., newly renovated processing plant at 342 North Main Street in Boerne. As they have for over 34 years, hunters from all over line up to drop off deer, wild hogs, elk, and other exotic game animals. When it’s your turn, your game animal is hung, thoroughly washed, checked in and tagged. Then it is stored in their cooler until it is skinned and cut up according to your exact cutting instructions. You can choose to

have your fresh cut backstraps, tenders, and hams made into steaks, medallions, fajitas, jerky, smoked and peppered pieces or even wrapped in bacon. After the steaks are cut Klein Smokehaus vacuum packages them in one to two pound packages before freezing them for freshness. Your choices then multiply with the many options they offer for the remaining trimmings. You can simply choose ground venison for hamburger or chili meat, or a new option this year will be game hamburger patties. Bacon Wrapped Chopped Steaks, a customer favorite, are also available in regular or savory jalapeno and cheese. Finally, Klein Smokehaus prides themselves on their unique smoked products. They offer a wide array of sausages, such as fresh, light smoked sausage, air dried German style sausage, summer sausages, fully cooked smoked links, and
ready to eat snack sticks that you’ll be enjoying long after deer season is just a memory. Wondering what makes Klein Smokehaus unique? It begins with customer service, making sure you get exactly what you want at check in. Then they monitor your trim weights to make sure there are no surprises at check out time. Additionally, they still use many traditional processing methods. After the trimmings are ground and mixed with spices, the meat is stuffed into casings and each sausage is hand tied. For their jerky, dry sausage, and light smoked sausages they apply a cold smoke process and air dry them the old fashioned way. Finally, they are flexible and willing to customize your order to meet your needs. Each year Klein Smokehaus continues to grow, now processing over 2500 game animals annually, yet they still take the time to focus on each individual order. Don’t trust your harvest to any old guy with a grinder; take it to the best – Klein Smokehaus!

When it comes to brewing craft beer, for Pedernales Brewing Company it is all about tradition. “We strive to make traditional and benchmark-quality beers. We want each beer we make to be what defines its style,” said Lee Hereford, President and CEO of Pedernales Brewing Company. “While many craft breweries are busy creating trendy beers with exotic flavors, that isn’t what our brewery is about. When you drink one of our beers, we want it to be like you are stepping back in time and getting a taste of what traditional beer was really like before the ‘big guys’ took over.” Pedernales Brewing Company has built quite a business on these time-honored flavors of beer. Having shipped their first case of beer in April of 2012, their beers have proven very popular and are now available statewide in Texas, except for the Houston area. They are also available statewide in New Mexico and Arizona and
Mexico, in Monterrey, Mexico City and Cancun. PBC saw sales climb from 19,000 cases in 2012, to 62,000 cases in 2013. They are projecting sales of 120,000 cases in 2014. Operating from right here in the Texas hill country, Pedernales Brewing Company calls Fredericksburg, Texas home and it is there that they brew and bottle their five signature beers, Lobo Texas Lager, Lobo Lito, Lobo Negro, Pedernales Classic Hefe-Weizen and Pedernales Classic IPA. They also have four seasonal beers that include Lobo Octoberfest, Pedernales Classic Porter, Pedernales Classic Dunkel-Weizen, and Pedernales Classic Kristall-Weizen. These beers all abide by the German purity laws, or Reinheitsgebot, which specifies that only four ingredients, barley, hops, yeast and water, can be used. Pedernales’ Brewmaster, Peter McFarlane, comes with plenty of experience in the brewing industry. Having graduated in 1989 with a diploma in Brewing Science from the Siebel Institute of Technology, McFarlane brings with him the knowledge and skill developed over 25 years of brewing beer. “Pedernales is the eleventh brewery that Peter has worked with. His expertise in the brewing industry is invaluable to PBC,” Hereford added. The success of Pedernales can be attributed to not only having quality products,

but their philosophy of giving back. According to Hereford, “Of course we need to make a profit, but our second obligation here at PBC is to share the blessing. We love to be able to join up with and show our support for great causes like the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce Wild Game Dinner. I am happy to say that the brewery has supported every viable charity that has contacted us.” Pedernales Brewing Company would like to be an example to other small businesses here in the hill country. Hereford added, “You can talk about it or you can just do it. So we are doing our part by sharing our beer.” Pedernales Brewing Company has been a great supporter of the Boerne Wild Game Dinner. “We love to be involved in this event. Year after year it proves to be a fantastic time with lots of wonderful food and beverages. We’ll be there again this year with plenty of Pedernales beer on hand!”
Pedernales Brewing Company also invites you to come visit them at their brewery in Fredericksburg. Tours and tastings are Fridays from 3:00pm to 5:00pm and Saturdays from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. The cost is $10.00 and includes an 8-ounce souvenir glass, four tokens used to sample their Lobo and Classic beers and a tour of the Pedernales Brewing Company.

by Ed Hall
Harold Teel, a native Texan, earned his architectural degree at the University of Texas in Austin. His graduate studies included Greek Art, Archeology and Architecture and its influence on Roman Classical Civilization. Among his architectural achievements were numerous medical and educational facilities, office buildings, religious facilities, and the highly revered King Ranch Museum. As an architectural professor at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas, Harold was awarded the National Institute for Staff and Organization Development Excellence award. After more than 30 years as an architect and a professor, Harold retired to the Hill Country. He and his wife, Pam, and his Labrador Retriever, Glory, currently reside in Bulverde. After retirement from architecture and teaching, Harold began his new career as an artist.

Harold said watercolor is his passion and palette knife oil painting is his release. His early art focused on what he knew best: architectural and wildlife subjects using graphite or pen and inks. Looking for a new challenge, Harold turned to watercolor. He said, “Watercolor is elusive at best and presents a challenge at each turn of the brush, but it truly is my passion. By exercising a little patience and exploring the endless range of color possibilities, watercolor can be tremendously exciting. When light can penetrate the paint to the paper underneath and reflect back to the eye, a radiance results that can’t be achieved through any other medium. continued on page 26

Ed Hall is a native Texan who moved to Boerne almost ten years ago. His "No Fences" captures the action of a buffalo herd on a Wyoming ridgeline. Boerne Professional Artists represents artists and galleries in the Hill Country and the Coastal Bend regions of Texas. After suffering an injury to his right shoulder which prevented him from painting for a while, Harold took on a new challenge: palette knife oil painting with his non-dominant left hand. “Using a brush with my left hand was like threading a needle with that hand, but as I went to a palette knife, I gained

confidence and could concentrate on the strokes of the knife as it placed paint on the canvas. It was a release into another realm of painting for me,” he said. "I still enjoy painting architectural and wildlife subjects, but my subjects are much more diversified than previously. I attempt to tell a story through each of my paintings, whether it’s a redfish on a line, a longhorn in the cactus or an old truck that’s been abandoned in the desert. I try to find and convey the beauty of nature in everything I do," he related. In the last year, Harold has concentrated on wild animals of the world. After finishing an African Maasai bull elephant, his attention has turned to the Maasai children where he hopes to capture their innocent beauty. Recently visiting eight countries in Europe, the art and architecture brought a renewed love for the masterpieces that so dominate those countries. The art of the Renaissance has yet to be met by modern day artists for the composition, values, and colors utilized by the Masters – yet another challenge for Harold and his own artwork. Harold is a member of the following associations: • Boerne Professional Artists • Hill Country Council for the Arts • The Art Center of Corpus Christi • The Watercolor Society of South Texas • The Art Center for the Islands Harold feels honored to have been chosen by the Boerne Chamber of Commerce two years in a row to present some of his most favorite works at their annual Wild Game Dinner. paintings (clockwise from top left): Slicker, Ter lingua Ghost, Longhorn

Lester Meier
T
t he original Agri-preneur
The sport of rodeo is a tradition that dates as far back as the early 1800’s and it continues to offer a window into its history for young and old alike. The sport began as a working ranch competition where cowboys gathered after long cattle drives to show off their skills and it has grown into one of the most popular American sports today. Lester Meier, founder and owner of the Lester Meier Rodeo Company Texas and the Open Pro Rodeo Association, has been in the business of providing cowboys and cowgirls, as well as rodeo spectators, with the highest quality stock, fast-paced rodeo action and family-friendly atmosphere for more than 40 years. Lester and Holly Meier’s vision and dedication to the rodeo tradition, has made their Open Pro Rodeo one of the top ten in the state. Lester Meier Rodeo events include bull riding, bare bronc riding, ladies barrel racing, ladies breakaway calf roping, team roping, tie down calf roping, and steer wrestling. Once a bull rider himself who competed for seven years, Lester can truly relate to the cowboy way of life. He encourages respect to others, as well as to themselves, a moral standard both inside and outside the arena. A native of Fredericksburg, Texas, Lester took a job as a herdsman for three years at the LBJ ranch in Stonewall and during this time he became involved in bull riding and started the Stonewall Rodeo Club. His bull riding career ended in 1973 when he was gored through the chin by a bull. People often ask him why he stopped bull riding and he says emphatically, “it was that last bull!” After he recovered, he purchased a couple of bucking bulls and, as they say, the rest is history. Lester is also a fulltime rancher on the very same ranch where he grew up showing steers and turkeys as a boy with the 4H and FFA; and he’s still very active in the community. He serves as the chairman of the Gillespie County Stock Show Sales Committee, founder and president of the Gillespie County Wild Game Dinner (where in the last seven years he’s donated more than $330,000 for youth and adult agricultural education), he is a long time Farm Bureau Director and he still finds time to be very involved in and supportive of the Emmaus Christian Community. His continuous benevolent efforts have made a tremendous impact on Gillespie and surrounding counties. We asked Lester why he spends so much of his time raising money for 4H and FFA projects; why he is so devoted to kids? He tells us, “I was raised very poor and there always was some organization that would help us out with our stock show projects. I want to be that for other kids who just need a little help.” The demand for corporate events with a Texas flare has presented an opportunity for the Lester Meier Rodeo Company to add the Texas Style Event Planners, Inc. to their résumé. Traveling all across the state, providing corporate companies with locations, food and beverages, entertainment and themed events, has allowed hundreds of thousands to experience a true and exciting western Rodeo. He very much enjoyed mentoring the Greater Boerne Chamber of
Commerce through their first few Wild Game Dinners. “Every event stands out in its own way, but Boerne started off with a bang! They have great leadership, strong local support as far as organizing and working the event, and then, there are all those great cook teams!” The 2014 Texas Hill Country Open Pro Rodeo Tour is packed full of Open Pro rodeo events, open bull ridings and Corporate Convention Rodeos throughout the year. With a combined annual attendance of over 100,000 people and counting, all events produced by the Lester Meier Rodeo Company carry the same high quality trademark – top stock, fast and efficient production and a personal dedication to delivering heart stopping excitement, old fashion family fun and an opportunity to honor the cowboy way. In his spare time, Lester Meier manages over 3,500 acres of ranchland, supporting a cow calf operation. He and his wife Holly work tirelessly together in every endeavor. He is the father of two daughters, Charity and Tiffani, a fatherly stepfather to E.A., and has two sons-in-law, Gabe Wilson and Price Phillips. Probably the great joys of his life are three grandchildren who call their proud grandpa “Snappy.” They have that right! So, what’s next for Lester? Rodeo is his heart and his family says, only half-joking, he will probably be taking the sport of rodeo to China.

Lester Meier: Boerne’s WGD Mentor In 2011, the Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce introduced a unique new event to Boerne – our Wild Game Dinner. Our goal was to create an event that would grow year after year and would become a destination event for people throughout the Hill Country and South Texas. The concept was daunting and had many moving parts. Lester Meier, founder and President of the Gillespie County WGD very graciously offered his professional assistance to help Boerne produce an outstanding event. As research, founders Beca Short and Karen Daly traveled to nearby Hill Country communities to attend various Wild Game Dinners, identifying best practices, noting aspects they thought might work for their event.. Lester spent countless hours meeting with the Boerne WGD Committee every week for five months as they poured over
thousands of details, identified potential vendors and secured support and sponsorships. He still mentors the Boerne group today as the committee continues to evolve the event calling on Lester for his experience and insights. Lester returns to Boerne’s WGD every year to work the event. In gratitude, the Boerne committee donates a gun and a game to the Gillespie County WGD as a gesture of our appreciation to Lester and his fabulous team for their invaluable assistance.

Wonderful Wing Shooting Adventure
in Argentina!
W
We are back from our wing shooting adventure and I just wanted to let you know how much fun the four of us had hunting birds in Argentina. We bought a package for four at your Wild Game Dinner Auction. It was one amazing experience. We would highly recommend it to anyone out there, avid hunters and beginners alike. There are a few things you need to know before you go to make your travel experience the best it can be and I do have a few helpful hints, a great travel agent and some sage advice if anyone wants it. Estancia del Pilar will put you on the birds. That’s for sure. You will shoot for three to four hours in the morning and again in the evening. You never have to go far from the lodge. The staff are amazing and we all left feeling like we found a new family. The lodging is comfortable, the food is amazing and we can’t forget the wine!! I’m afraid we are all ruined for life when it comes to dove hunting now. We have never seen anything like this. There were sometimes hundreds of birds flying over your head at a time in wave after wave. It’s almost indescribable and pictures hardly do it justice. Buenos Aires is also a must do if you plan to travel that far. We went for a day before and several days after the shoot. It’s a great way to break up the trip. Some of our buddies from the lodge kept telling us how great the tango shows were. That’s really unusual coming from a group of guys, but they were right. I think we could have gone to one every night. There’s lots of shopping, eating and sight seeing to be done. They do rave about their meat, but to be honest, they really can’t beat us Texans! Still, we had some fine meals and some amazing Malbecs. If there were ever a reason to say “just do it” this has to be it! Go, go, go, Dale and Karen Townsend Boerne, Texas

Taryn Titsworth
T
A Steward for Our Natural Resources Taryn Titsworth was born to a career in agriculture, influenced by his deep love for animals and because he grew up on the same working ranch that his mother did. Agriculture has always been central to his family’s life and that responsibility to the natural resources he was born to respect and care for led him to apply for and win one of the scholarships funded by Boerne’s Wild Game Dinner. His story is compelling. The single individual who most influenced Taryn’s career choice is his grandfather who has been involved in farming and ranching his whole life. As a toddler, Taryn was his grandfather’s shadow, constantly asking “why?” as he ran alongside the steading strides of his mentor. Taryn and his grandfather worked side-by-side through the years on every aspect of his Dorper sheep program. The Dorper is a South African breed of domestic sheep developed by crossing Dorset Horn and the Blackhead Persian sheep. The breed was created through the efforts of the South African Department of Agriculture to breed a meat sheep suitable to the more arid regions of the country. It started with something as simple as assisting in docking tails on lambs and marking them as his grandfather drenched them. From his grandfather, Taryn learned to have a respect for livestock. He paid close attention to the treatment and conditions of the environment in which the sheep are raised for whatever their intended purpose: going to market or becoming part of a breeding program. He learned the importance of a good feeding program for market animals. As part of the feeding program, they mixed their own feed rations to support what is currently desirable in the marketplace. The ultimate goal in producing a market animal is a desirable carcass with high cutability which provides the best return for the producer. Taryn knows a career in agriculture isn’t glamorous, but it is necessary and important. “I have a sincere desire to promote agriculture,” states Taryn, “and respect the role that agriculture played in Texas history and in its future. I think that everyone should know and understand where their food and clothing comes from and not simply the brand name or the name of the store from which it was purchased.” As urban population continues to grow, individuals residing in those areas have forgotten what is necessary to provide food and clothing for themselves and others. “Agriculture awareness is a must and everyone must do their part. I find among my own friends that their perception of a career in agriculture is that of being outdated and with minimal financial return. I don’t share their beliefs and it is these individuals whose opinion I must change. I believe that the world of agriculture will continue to grow.” Taryn’s perfect career will be in research and development for a major animal agriculture corporation, such as Tyson or Cargill. Yet he wants to continue to work with students helping them to develop a passion for the livestock industry and advocating agriculture, just like his grandfather did for him. Finally, at the end of the day, Taryn wants to serve as a steward for the animals, land and environment that have been entrusted to him. Texas is counting on him to do just that. Taryn is currently enrolled as a Freshman at Angelo State University studying Food Animal Science and Marketing. His Wild Game Dinner scholarship lets him know there are tens of thousands of people in his community that stand with him, applauding and supporting his efforts.

It was a last minute decision to go to the Boerne Wild Game Dinner and we’re glad we did. I am a big guy and I ate a lot of different foods, some that I’d never tried before. It was great! I bought a new rifle at the live auction and I bought the hunting dog too. I’ll be back for the next dinner.

Riley Crawford Wild Game Dinner Scholarship Plants Seeds for Success
A
A number of seeds have been planted in Riley Crawford’s life that helped build his character and lead him to ultimately want a career in Animal Production. Riley is a Boerne native and a 2014 graduate of Comfort High School. He credits sports with helping him understand how to respect others and how to overcome adversity. He learned how to overcome obstacles, and as Team Captain he led people with different goals and perspectives to work toward a single mission. He discovered that you can’t always win and learned how to overcome loss and move on. He learned the benefits of hard work and competition and will apply those lessons from Sports to become successful as a businessman. Riley’s been a hunter since he was nine years old, when he shot his first white tail. “It was a ten pointer” he says. Through this sport he learned patience and that he rarely took the first viable animal he saw. He believes that because he can hunt, he’ll always be able to make sure his family has food on the table. He recalls after that first deer he shot that food you bring to the table is even more delicious than food you buy at the store. His participation in FFA helped him focus on a career path. He learned a lot about responsibility when he started to show animals. Riley learned responsibility requires full commitment and that he wasn’t going to get the best out of his animal until he put his best effort in. He fully believes that without farmers and ranchers much of life as he knows it would not be the same. He is excited about being the first member of his family to graduate from college. He envisions himself as a dedicated member of a team being resourceful in an animal production system, dedicated to learning the ropes of having his own prized cattle producing business. He will be making food and animal resources safe for his family and community. Animal production will give him the chance to go in many directions, supporting the environment and the food chain, making a positive healthy impact on the earth. Riley is convinced that college will feed the seeds planted in high school allowing him to be successful in his chosen career. Riley is the winner of a college scholarship funded by the 2013 Boerne Wild Game Dinner that will contribute to the financing of his college career.

One Love Pet Orphanage Devoted to Second Chances
O
One of the highlights of the 2013 Boerne Wild Game Dinner’s Live Auction was the opportunity for guests to purchase a gorgeous Brittany spaniel that was donated by the One Love Pet Orphanage. One Love was founded earlier that year by a group of six individuals with the passion to offer second chances to pets in need. One Love’s mission is to rescue abandoned or unwanted pets and to rehabilitate them until time allows for adoption of a healthy pet. They also wish to provide the community an information resource for educating families with pets on responsible pet ownership to include proper nutrition, behavior training and veterinary care. You may be wondering what makes One Love different from all the other pet rescues and animal orphanages? At One Love, their primary goal is to focus on adopting out healthy pets and pets whose medical conditions have been revealed to adoptees.
One Love’s motto is “One Love. One Pet. One Goal.” If they take in a small amount of pets at a time they are able to focus on each animal’s health and happiness. It also allows them time without space restraint to make sure they go to the best home possible. One Love works closely with local shelters to assist them with animals that are not suited to be in kennel type situation, like young puppies, and take them on. For instance, there have been multiple situations where they have taken litters of puppies on and adopted them all to amazing families who otherwise might have been exposed to diseases that can easily make young dogs, with undeveloped immune systems, very continued on page 38
A Huntin’ Dog Can Be a Girl’s Best Friend Too! Andy Glass wasn’t even planning to go to the 2013 Boerne Wild Game Dinner. He was going to a party at a friend’s house who took ill at the last minute. Another friend called at the same time to see if Andy and his girlfriend wanted to go to the Boerne wild game dinner. “Sure!” Andy said and when they drove through the gates at the Kendall County Fairgrounds, Fate rode with them. Andy’s girlfriend, Brittany, didn’t know what to expect, but shortly after she arrived she was greeted by Georgia, a beautiful Spaniel pup donated by One Love Pet Orphanage to help raise money for scholarships and the Boerne Chamber. “No! No!! No!” said Andy but he knew his fate was sealed when Brittany, the girlfriend, found out Georgia, the hunting dog, was a Brittany spaniel. Seriously. It was Andy’s first time at the Boerne Wild Game Dinner and he says, “I loved it! I’m a big guy and I ate a lot of food that was outstanding! So many different dishes all beautifully prepared. I bought the dog and an exceptional rifle – it was all good!” Brittany and Ginger are on vacation at the coast so you can see the story has a happy ending thanks to One Love Pet Orphanage!

That included Forest Park Veterinary Hospital in Dallas. Dr. Matthew Lang owned that hospital for 10 years before it was claimed by interstate 35. A graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Lang decided to rebuild his practice in Boerne where he opened the Cibolo Creek Veterinary. Several staff members from Dallas moved to Boerne to work in Dr. Lang’s new practice. He inspires that kind of dedication. Their mission is to provide you and your pet the latest in veterinary medical technology in a compassionate, comfortable, family oriented setting. He runs a very special practice. Everyone who takes their pets there for medical treatment talks about how loving he and his staff are with both patients and their families. Every family that takes their pets to Dr. Lang tells you it isn’t uncommon after a visit to find a voice message on their phone from Dr. Lang or his team. “We just wanted to check on FiFi, Is she comfortable? Do you have any questions?” Dr. Lang believes the most important thing he can do for your pet is to give it a thorough diagnostic exam and spend the time with families to discuss care and treatment plans. He doesn’t want you to leave his hospital until you and he know everything that is going on inside the animal. Dr. Lang’s office is a 7,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art medical facility packed with the highest quality diagnostic and monitoring equipment. Spaying and neutering is important. Rabies shots and heartworm prevention is important, but knowing what is going on with your pet, head to toe, is critical for the longevity of your beloved family member. Dr. Lang’s commitment to wellness and prevention is apparent every year at the Boerne Wild Game Dinner where he donates an extensive wellness package to accompany the hunting pup that is auctioned off that night.

“
I enjoyed the Wild Game Dinner in Boerne very much. We tasted a lot of different food and met so many interesting people. The auctioneer was the best we ever heard! We were a sponsor and got our name on the cup! Loved it and all the attention we received.

sick or even worse, take their lives. In today’s challenging economy, many rescue centers are overwhelmed by demand and unable to provide the proper medical treatment prior to placing a pet. Hence, the vision for One Love Pet Orphanage and their mantra is based upon saving one pet at a time. By responsibly growing the number of pets they can reha-
bilitate, One Love Pet Orphanage can ensure that the quality of care and services their animals receive is exceptional prior to their adoption. One Love is devoted to steadily growing; however, One Love Pet Orphanage is a non-profit organization relying solely on sponsors, donations and volunteers. After the discounts provided by partnering veterinarians, each pet will cost an average of $300.00 to $500.00 to rehabilitate before they are placed with an adoptive family. Currently, One Love Pet Orphanage has the capacity to house, feed, treat and rehabilitate three to five pets at a time by providing them comfortable shelter, food and the appropriate veterinary services to include spaying and neutering, updated vaccines, heartworm tests, and other diagnostic health checks as otherwise necessary, until they are confident the animals are ready to be adopted. It is the goal of One Love Pet Orphanage to have the accommodations to increase capacity to care for and adopt out seven to ten pets at a time by late 2014 through donations and their volunteers’ help. If you’d like to know more about One Love Pet Orphanage, check out their Facebook page: www. facebook.com/OneLovePetOrphanage, email them at onelovepetorphanage@gmail.com or address any correspondence to Jennifer Evans at P.O. Box 970, Boerne, Texas 78006. One Love is currently looking for another great hunting dog for the 2014 Wild Game Dinner. Come to the dinner and see who is waiting for adoption!

Holt Geistweidt, age 9, won this hunt in a Hard Luck Buck Hunt drawing at the TGR last year in a drawing given by Bobby Love to the kids whose entries didn’t win in the whitetail contest. The hunt from Bobby Love taught Holt that there are people out there who recognize and appreciate hard work and enthusiasm, even though you may not always place first. How amazing it took the sport of hunting to recognize his dedication and excitement, not other extracurricular activities and other sports.
Here's Todd Glowka with his 23 point, 232 1/8" SCI Whitetail harvested in Mountain Home, Texas in December of 2013. The deer currently ranks #16 in the book and is his largest whitetail harvested to date. The deer is mounted and residing in his residence in Cordillera Ranch, along with a collection of many other big game from around the world.

Did You See That? Two guys are out hunting deer. The first guy says, "Did you see that?" "No," the second guy says. "Well, a bald eagle just flew overhead," says the first guy. "Oh," says the second guy. A couple of minutes later, the first guy says, "Did you see that?" "See what?" the second guy asks. "Are you blind? There was a big, black bear walking on that hill, over there." "Oh." A few minutes later the first guy says: "Did you see that?" By now, the second guy is getting aggravated, so he says, "Yes, I did!" And the first guy says: "Then why did you step in it?"
