DESIGN

Great design solutions often spring from the collaborative discussion of multiple design options between the design team, the client and consultants. We compare and review these options, and through a process of deletion and selection, synthesize the solutions to meet our clients’ needs. A wide range of tools are utilized to communicate design ideas, including physical models, hand sketches, 3D renderings and virtual fly-throughs. By involving the entire project team, we achieve our goals of creating consensus and minimizing road blocks.

COMMUNICATION

BOKA Powell utilizes an effective communication style that brings order to the multiple ways team members interface by supporting tools they use, including conference calls, e-mail, GoToMeeting and video conferencing. Our online management of project information – including meeting notes, design presentations and construction documents – allows the client and consultant team to have continuous, yet controlled access for review, mark-up and group discussion. Our pioneering use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) has further enhanced the ability of the consultant team to coordinate complex building systems and discover cost-saving solutions.

INNOVATION

Recognized throughout our industry for our ingenuity and practicality, we carefully evaluate new technology in building design and construction, including integrated project delivery and Building Information Modeling (BIM), evolutions in construction systems, new materials, advances in under-floor air distribution and MEP systems, and progressive improvements in the technical and cost performance of building systems and materials. Our philosophy is to safeguard the interests of our clients by thoroughly evaluating the track record of any new concepts and materials prior to proposing their use on a project.

SUSTAINABILITY

BOKA Powell is committed to creating respectful, sustainable design solutions. The main objectives of our green design approach are to minimize the wasteful expense of energy, water and raw materials, and mitigate environmental degradation caused by materials and systems throughout their life cycle, and beyond. We work to achieve these goals as a matter of course throughout all of our projects, striving where possible to specify materials and systems that have an environmental benefit. When sustainability is a stated goal of the client, our LEED®-accredited design teams bring the ability to achieve the highest standards up to LEED Platinum certification.

1,100,000 SF The Moody Theater is a 2,750-set performance venue integrated within the 1,200,000 SF Block 21 tower, which includes the W Austin Hotel & Residences, 159 luxury condominiums, restaurants, retail and structured parking. Nearly 40 specialty consultants were engaged on the Block 21 project. The team addressed audio/visual technology, acoustics, lighting, rigging, drapery, audience platforms, noise and vibration isolation to mitigate disruption of other uses within the building mass. Working closely with the City of Austin in response to their desire for urban infill projects on the western side of downtown, the project was developed by Stratus Properties, a private investment group based in Austin.

Parish Episcopal School acquired a former ExxonMobil corporate office campus in North Dallas in 2002. Today, it houses nearly 1,200 K-12 students and 150 faculty. In response to the need to better accommodate award-winning theater and performing arts programs, Parish engaged BOKA Powell to envision a new building in keeping with the campus’ existing style that houses performance and rehearsal space, as well as a grand lobby that allows for additional pre-function and gathering space. To provide exceptional flexibility, the entire lower level of seating retracts, opening the floor for seated dining and other events.

SMU engaged BOKA Powell to examine opportunities to renovate and expand the Owen Fine Arts Center, located on the tree-lined campus’ main boulevard, followed by full design services to bring the recommendations to fruition. Multiple additions and renovations over many years had rendered the building inflexible and confusing for users. BOKA Powell began by meeting with stakeholders to understand the existing uses of the building by department and gathering a list of key goals for the project. The study included a full complement of consultants and engineers who developed a comprehensive

view of the existing building systems, structure, code compliance, accessibility/circulation, and performance spaces. The team developed three-dimensional computer models and renderings that illuminated opportunities for renovation and expansion, including renovations for all performing arts venues, restructuring space for visual and performing arts departments, re-purposing the former Meadows Museum for administrative office space, and providing other opportunities for expansion in underutilized areas.
