Addiction fuels Langeberg crime DALEEN FOUCHÉ DRUG and alcohol abuse are some of the biggest factors contributing to increases in contact crimes in the Langeberg area. The latest crime statistics to be released cover the period from April 2011 to March 2012 In Bonnievale, compared to the year before, statistics show a decrease in contact crimes such as murder, assault and sexual offences, but a rise in burglaries. Captain Bertus Conradie, commander of Bonnievale Police Station, says the drop in contact crimes is due to police operations and awareness campaigns on sexual crimes and abuse. During June and July 2011, Conradie says, there was an increase in burglaries, but he adds that a number of arrests were made in this regard. He says that most of the perpetrators were youths who have now been incorporated
into safety programmes like the Vangnet Project. Initiated in April this year, the Vangnet programme aims to empower youths at risk of becoming drug addicts and criminals, and so uplifts the community as a whole. Youths are empowered through various activities, including the discipline of boxing, offered by a club recently started in conjunction with the World Boxing Organisation. Since the project’s inception, Conradie says, there has been a drop in drug-related crimes. The crime statistics for McGregor reflect a drop in burglaries. But Captain Mzwamdile Gqubi, commander of McGregor Police Station, says that in the past three months, burglaries have increased by 200%. This translates into over 29 reported burglaries. He says the increase can be attributed to the release of prisoners from several facilities earlier in the year, but he adds that many solid arrests have been made.
Weer • Weather
Gqubi says crime in McGregor is mostly motivated by drug and alcohol dependency, and that police are addressing the issue. In the Ashton policing precinct there was a drop in reported murders, but a strong increase in residential burglaries. Warrant Officer Johannes Prins, acting station commander for the Ashton police, says many of these burglaries took place at RDP houses where limited security precautions are in place. The burglars targeted small items. Once again, unemployment, drug and alcohol dependency were listed as causes for crime. Prins, however, says the community has been very helpful with feeding through drug-related tip-offs, which have led to arrests. In Montagu, contact crimes have dropped by 14,4% overall – with assault having dropped significantly – but crime did show increases in some categories, such as murder. Captain Norman Evertson, commander of the Montagu

police, says visible policing contributed to the drop in contact crimes; he adds that the local officers have been focusing on sector policing. Although reported burglaries dropped during the previous financial year, as reflected in the statistics, Evertson says there has been a sharp increase in burglaries since April. He says a number of arrests have shown that many were committed by people from outside Montagu. Robertson’s crime statistics, although very similar to previous years’, show an increase in both residential and business burglaries. But Lieutenant Cynthia Mngcele, spokesperson for the Robertson police, says contact crimes have dropped. She says this is because police operations at illegal shebeens, along with regular foot patrols, have proven successful. Mngcele says police are also involved in awareness campaigns on sexual crimes and the safety of women. . See page 3 for the statistics. Local dance talent to bloom THE Danza la Vida school of dance is proud to present its third annual dance concert. This year, a school spokesperson says, “is all about dancing a story and sharing a universal message that is often better done with actions and expressions than words”. With that in mind, the dance school’s dancers will be acting out a profound story about a girl who gets lost in the forest. “And as many of us have experienced in life, sometimes you have to get lost to find yourself.” The concert will show off local young talent from Bonnievale, McGregor, Robertson, Ashton and Montagu, and also feature variety of dance styles, including ballet, modern, con-
temporary, creative movement, theatre dance, tap, and break-dancing. The youngest cast member is just three years old! A special aspect of this show is that, from the beginning of this year, six talented, underprivileged teens have been given the chance to be a part of the school as scholarship dancers. Two shows will be held – on 10 and 12 October – to give the talented students of Danza la Vida a chance to spread their wings. Tickets cost R40; the doors open at 19:00, and the show starts at 19:30. To book, contact Danique on 084 823 5166 or at info@danzalavida.co.za. Alternatively, point your browser at www.danzalavida.co.za to find out more.

Grills sizzle during braai boot camp BRAAI enthusiasts gathered their tongs and tastebuds and headed out to Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel to experience the gourmet side of the grill and learn how to best honour Heritage Day and it’s smokey partner – National Braai Day. During this sizzling, sophisticated “braai boot camp” in the heart of the Breede River Valley, one of the country’s best loved celebrity chefs, Reuben Riffel, shared with carnivores and vegetarians alike his smoking hot braai secrets and divulged signature meat and side dishes cooked on everything from the ultimate wood-fuelled fire to gasand charcoal-based grills. Besides interactive and enlightening cooking demonstrations, guests were given the opportunity to braai the perfect “mystery box” in a culinary quest to be crowned the ultimate tongmaster of the day. This vibrant braai celebration included a delicious country-style lunch of tantalising heritage fare created from a mouthwatering selection of local, seasonal ingredients and produce. Guests were also given the opportunity to pair the dishes with a selection of wines from the area, and were guided by certified sommelier Susan Cashin in discovering and understanding their own unique taste preferences.

Local golfer shines
THE 52nd South African Inter-provincial Championship played at Nelson Mandela Bay last month was dominated by Jacquin Hess from Robertson.
He finished unbeaten in the singles, winning five out of five without any of his matches needing to go to the final hole. His four and three win over KwaZulu-Natal’s Ryan Birnie on the last afternoon set the tone for his team’s surge that ultimately secured them a share of the title. Three players from Boland – Hess from Robertson, Cedric Rooi from Worcester and Mark Mahoney from Paarl – shared in winning the title. In total, Hess dropped only a single point over the whole week. On top of his singles performances, he won four out of his five foursomes matches with his partner Karl Osche. This superb effort saw him named jointly as most valuable player of the tournament, together with Louis Taylor from Central Gauteng. Rooi and Mahoney played together in the foursomes and won three of their five matches. Rooi also took three and a half points out of a possible five in the singles, while Mahoney secured two and a half singles points for his team. All three players are graduates of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB). “These performances are a real testament to our coaches and the effectiveness of our programmes,” says SAGDB managing director Ken Viljoen. “I’m incredibly proud of all of these players, and I am confident that this
is only a start. “I believe we are going to see more and more SAGDB players coming through and performing at national and even international level. The talent we have in our programmes makes me sure of that. “Our president, Johann Rupert, has a vision that in time the SAGDB will develop a world champion. “And from what we saw over the last week, I’m sure we can make that dream a reality.”
