FOTO: MIREILLE CURLEWIS

Missing toddler (2) raped A two-year-old girl from Mbekweni who was found abandoned in a taxi after she was reported missing, was raped. The toddler, who went missing from her crèche on 23 February, was found the next morning in a taxi by the driver who then took the girl to the Mbekweni Police Station. Upon a medical examination it was established that she had been raped. No suspects have been identified, but police are investigating the matter. Mbekweni CPF Secretary Mpumi Lallie urged community members to become involved with the CPF and join hands in the fight against crime. “We don’t tolerate such behaviour on children or women.” He said they have been and will continue visiting different communities to introduce themselves and hope to establish sub-forums to enable community members to assist in providing information to prevent such things from happening. “We want to be the bridge between the community and the police.”

Cliffie Walters bel by 021 877 5900.

While mall robberies seem to be the order of the day, it might be good to know what to do when you find yourself in the unfortunate position of falling victim to such an act. In the past few months shopping centres like Canal Walk, Tygervalley, Cape Gate, Somerset Mall, Zevenwacht Mall and Longbeach Mall made news headlines while targeted by armed robbers. On home soil, Paarl Mall has also had its fair share of robberies with especially cellphone shops and electronic stores targeted. But what do you do when you find yourself in the middle of a robbery? ER24 has had first hand experience with treating injured patients and offering assistance to traumatised shoppers after such an ordeal. Henning Jacobs, trauma support coordinator at ER24, said the atmosphere at a shopping centre after a robbery is one of total shock and fear. “People do not know what to do. They cannot think straight. It is also quiet as people are afraid to make any noise. Some people cannot stop crying while others are numb and do not want to say a word,” said Jacobs. He added that it takes people months to deal with the fear they experienced. When Jacobs and other ER24 counsellors arrive on scene, traumatised people are debriefed. “People are told what emotions and reactions to expect following the incident and are provided with coping skills. “These coping skills are provided to help them vent their feelings and deal with the shock,” said Jacobs. He said every victim of a mall robbery,

whether feeling “fine” or not, should go for counselling. “It just gives them guidance on how to cope with the aftermath of the incident. There are cases where people experience post traumatic stress, but this only becomes evident a few weeks after the incident,” said Jacobs. If you find yourself in a mall robbery try to stay calm. If possible, move away from the incident. Try to find a safer place to take shelter. Do not try to be a hero. You could be injured or killed. If you are near an exit and it is safe to do so, leave the mall immediately. Phone for help if you are in a position to do so and give as much information as possible. Communication officer of Cleveland Police, Constable Mpho Mashakane, has the following advice: ) Shoppers should be more vigilant when leaving parking areas and be on the lookout for any suspicious activities. ) Be aware of people around you and anyone following you in the parking area. ) Should criminals demand your vehicle during a robbery, hand your keys to them immediately. Your life and that of your family is more important than the vehicle. ) Do not confront anyone yourself. If you suspect anything illegal report it to the security staff. ) Do not make any eye contact and do not act aggressively. ) Avoid being alone in high-target stores around opening and closing times. ) Always let someone in your family know where you are going and how long you will be gone. People can phone ER24 on 084 124 for trauma counselling. * ER24.

Ao.

Bespreek teen jou plek teen 9 Maart by 021 872 2651.

General - Algemeen

Drakenstein Gazette

Star Star Signs Signs CAPRICORN

22 December to 21 January

Getting what you really want and moving toward achieving the things which are important to you may involve surrendering something or eliminating something from your life at this time. Perhaps an attitude, a situation, or an attachment that has been impeding you is now released. You feel free to concentrate on the things that are most important to you now.

AQUARIUS

21 January To 20 February

Self-confidence, physical energy, and courage run high, so this is a fine time to undertake any project or challenge that confronts you, especially if it involves competition or asserting yourself vigorously. You are inclined to take charge or assume a leadership role at this time.

PISCES

20 February to 21 March

Physically, you need to be gentle with yourself and take care not to dissipate your energy reserves. Your imagination can run wild now, and you want to act out a fantasy or strange desire something you normally would have the good sense not to attempt. However, if you are an artist, this is a very inspired, fertile time for you.

ARIES

21 March to 21 April

You are highly ambitious, full of optimism and enthusiasm for new enterprises and plans. In fact, you may be foolishly overconfident and take on more challenges than you can really meet. You are inclined to take physical risks, gamble, speculate, and to act on faith and belief in yourself. This can, in fact, be a very productive time for you if you can keep your expectations within reasonable bounds.

TAURUS

21 April to 21 May

You see the superficiality, the flaws, and the foolishness or impracticality in others' plans. Also, communicating with others is difficult now, and people resist what you are saying. You feel more inhibited and uncommunicative, and you sense that others are not receptive. Frustrating conversations and the feeling that you are coming across negatively are possible now, so keep your thoughts to yourself.

GEMINI

21 May to 22 June

Today it is easy for you to concentrate on your work, to eliminate what is superfluous or distracting you from what you really need to do. You have the self-control and discipline to apply yourself to tasks that you may have been avoiding. You want to put your affairs in order and have a greater tolerance for tedium than usual. This is a good time to tackle mundane chores and practical business.

CANCER

22 June to 23 July

You are craving emotional excitement, stimulation, and something new and alive. This is a time for music, dancing, and being joyfully spontaneous. Your social inhibitions are loosened, and you may be tempted to have a wild flirtation or to act in a rather reckless way in a relationship.

LEO

23 Julie to 24 August

You are craving emotional excitement, stimulation, and something new and alive. This is a time for music, dancing, and being joyfully spontaneous. Your drive for personal power, achievement, or control over your life is very strong at this time. The tyrant in you emerges, and you can be excessively willful, domineering, or compulsive about doing what you want to.

VIRGO

24 August to 23 September

This is a favorable time to take a short vacation or pleasure trip, especially to visit people you really enjoy. The tone of this time is light, friendly, and easy. Positive connections are made with others, and you may meet a new friend. You may also want to call or write someone you love, simply to cheer them up or tell them you love them.

LIBRA

23 September to 23 October

You feel quite relaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid time for a vacation. Laziness, self-indulgence, and expecting everything to work out well with no effort on your part are negative possibilities now. You feel very lucky and you are likely to be lax or extravagant with your money. Material benefits are, indeed, likely at this time, but beware of being overly generous or depending too much on Lady Luck.

SCORPIO

23 October to 23 November

You are mentally restless and can not concentrate well on your immediate, familiar tasks. You are not inclined to discipline your mind or focus on practical matters, unless there is an element of gambling, play, or risk-taking involved. Reading something that is mind expanding, taking a trip, or planning a vacation is favored at this time.

23 November to 22 December

Right now, you will be tempted to do something for pleasure which you ordinarily wouldn't enjoy or even be interested in. Influences from a lover or friend pull you in a direction that is a bit off the beaten track for you. If you goof off or choose to indulge yourself, there will be some form of pay back later. Beware of indulgences that compromise your values or integrity. X1PTP3DD-GZ060315

You the entrepreneur: DAVID MALHERBE Any business owner would like to achieve the best possible results in his or her business. Therefore, it can be understood that business owners will be on the lookout for the most competent people to employ when recruiting staff. The better the quality of work employees can deliver, the better for the company. Unfortunately we often place all the emphasis on competence only, without considering a prospective employee’s character. Employees may be very good in executing their jobs, but if they lack good character, for instance they are stealing or are frequently absent, it can be to the detriment of the organisation. Competence and character are like the two wheels of a bicycle. They are equally important

Competence and character

and the same attention should be given to each. Employees are often appointed for competence and later need to be let go because of characterrelated failures. Competent employees with poor character qualities make for an organisation that resembles a penny farthing bicycle with one big wheel and one small one. Character refers to the qualities built into an individual’s life that determine his or her response, regardless of circumstances. Therefore good character basically means “doing the right thing when nobody is looking.” Lack of character in an organisation is evidenced by negligence, low productivity, quality problems, workers having their own agendas, etc. If such problems have a negative influence on your company, it is necessary to implement a strategy to develop good character. First it is necessary to not only emphasise per-

formance output, but also values and character qualities that will be acceptable in the company. Train managers and employees to establish a culture of good character. Secondly, enforce principle-based policies to establish an organisational culture that is built on good character. Promote these principles through every communication with employees and make good character an essential trait during the hiring process. And finally, give recognition for good character and not only for reaching performance targets. Only a couple of employees usually receive recognition for delivering outstanding output, butmostofthemcanberecognisedforsomegood character qualities e.g. alertness, loyalty, punctuality, etc. Source: Character First * David Malherbe is a business and career consultant and lives in Wellington.

Tik: is your child at risk?

Kids love it. It’s easily accessible, relatively cheap and can even be made in your kitchen. It’s called crystal meth or “tik”. But it is one of the most lethal and addictive drugs around. Tik (crystal meth) is a buzzword in drug circles and has become increasingly popular amongst school children. The drug has recently sparked a huge response from health authorities. Far more is being done to clamp down on tik dealing than on any other drug in South Africa. It’s also known as tuk, crystal meth, tuktuk, crystal, straws, globes, krank, ice, Tina, meth, glass, cristy, quartz, ice cream or crank. According to Grant Jardine, director of the Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre (CTDCC), the increased rate of crystal meth usage is dramatic. “It is something we haven’t seen before. It is the greatest challenge the CTDCC has ever had to face.” Tik is typically sold in straws, one of which could cost you between R15 and R30. The drug can be found in many forms, from afinepowdertolargercrystals.Itcanbesnorted, orally ingested, injected or smoked – smoking being the most common method. The ingredients are easily accessible and many manufacturers need nothing more than their kitchens to concoct large quantities. Recipes are plentiful and easily available, and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to follow them. According to users, the drug gives an immediate, extremely pleasurable rush or “flush”. The rush only lasts a few seconds, but is followed by euphoria (a high) which lasts for several hours. Users stay awake for hours, even days, during which they feel extremely active and energetic.

They seldom get hungry and go for long periods without food. Both the rush and the high are believed to result from the release of very high levels of the brain chemical dopamine into areas of the brain that regulate feelings of pleasure. Tik can be damaging in several ways. The drug is commonly sold as a combination of amphetamines and talcum powder, baking powder, starch, glucose or quinine. These additives can be very poisonous. Because the user never knows exactly what he is using, even an experienced user can accidentally overdose. PHOTO ILLUSTRATION Chronic abuse can lead to out-of-control rages, violence, anxiety, confusion, mood disturbances and insomnia. Users can become psychotic, experiencing symptoms such as paranoia, hallucinations and flight of ideas (jumping from one topic to the next). The paranoia can result in homicide or suicide. For obvious reasons, early intervention will give an addict the best chance of recovering. Is someone you know in trouble? These are the signs of crystal meth abuse: ) Loss of appetite and weight loss ) Aggression ) Dilated pupils ) Rapid speech ) Anxiety ) Psychotic symptoms (hallucinations and delusions) ) Headaches ) Over-confidence ) Insomnia If you have a loved one whom you suspect is involved with drugs, phone Sanca (South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence) on 021 872 9671

Elke Talentsoek het 15 take.

Vir navrae bel Peter Waker by 021 448 7864 of e-pos info@olympiad.org.za of besoek www.olympiad.org.za.
