Bowy House flutters to Butterfly House
Bowy House is excited to announce the evolution of the Bowy House programme with the help of their partner, Drakenstein Palliative Hospice.
Bowy House, established by Hester Veldsman, has been providing residential care for some of the most vulnerable children in our district under the age of six for the last ten years. The success of anti-retroviral therapy and the Department of Social Development’s preferred approach of keeping children in families and in the community has provided the opportunity to expand their approach to care. This new approach will facilitate the Bowy House children to go home. “We are relocating the Bowy House programme to the Butterfly House Community Resource Centre situated in the community of Fairyland. Caring with the family and estab-
lishing opportunities for families to gain the necessary support, skills and resources to ensure that the children get the best possible family care, is our aim,” said Aletia Grundling, CEO of Monte Christo Miqlat. “The Monte Christo Miqlat (MCM) vision of Living and experiencing the Kingdom of Heaven through a life of faith in action is the impetus behind our four community transformation focus areas in Drakenstein, of which Bowy House is one.” The programmes at MCM concentrate on delivering community development initiatives, supported by donations from local and international churches, businesses and individual benefactors. “With our new approach to Bowy, we aim to build a cushion of sustainable support around each child’s home to ensure healthy families. The focus will remain vulnerable preschool children (Bowy and Drakenstein Pallia-
tive Hospice children) and their families. We are developing a holistic care plan for each child that will be implemented and monitored by a TAC (Team Around the Child) including professional nurses (at home and at Butterfly House), a doctor, social workers, home-based care workers, youth and childcare workers, an occupational therapist and volunteers.” This family-centred approach will include regular home visits, and programmes will be offered for primary caregivers, the children and siblings. The Bowy children will attend daily programmes at Butterfly House. They welcome volunteers to join this initiative. Bake a cupcake in aid of National Epilepsy Week Every year National Epilepsy Week is celebrated to raise awareness about epilepsy, and this year it will be celebrated from 17–23 June with a cupcake challenge. The aim is to create public awareness through fun and challenging activities. You can participate by baking and icing a cupcake, taking a picture of it, sharing it on the organisation’s social media sites and getting your friends to vote for your entry. If you are not a baker, you can also show your support by wearing something red on the day. Paint your nails red and put on some red lipstick to get into the spirit of things. Download your own “Licence to Chill” for the right to chill for 15 minutes on National Epilepsy Day (21 June) to think about people with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterised by unusual electrical activity in the brain. Even though it is the most common neurological condition in the world, it is still very much misunderstood.
The main aim of the week is also to raise awareness about epilepsy to dispel the myths and social stigmas attached to the condition. Limited public understanding of the condition contributes to stigmatisation through negative attitudes towards people with epilepsy. Such stigmatisation leads to discrimination and can have a negative effect on seizure control and thus the quality of life of people with epilepsy. “National Epilepsy Week focuses on educating the public about the rights of people with epilepsy. We decided on this theme to encourage people to question their own attitudes about the condition as this would increase opportunities for the inclusion and integration of people with epilepsy,” says Marina Clarke, national director of Epilepsy South Africa. Next year’s race will be the 160th. This is a race for long boats with eight paddlers and a navigator each, racing on flat water over a distance of 6,8 km. On the other hand we have white-water paddling and rafting where you almost risk your life going down the rapids in the river. Our present-day business environment is often described as permanent white water. Therefore to manage your business in an Oxford to Cambridge way, while you are competing on white water will not make your business succeed. We live in times of incredible change where most of our securities of the past no longer exist. Years ago the value of the rand and interest rates were secure. Nowadays the value of the rand changes

The Put Foot Foundation announced that Tuesday 18 June will be the first official National Barefoot Day. All South Africans are asked to go barefoot to highlight the plight of underprivileged children in South Africa, and to commemorate Youth Month.
The Put Foot Foundation has become synonymous with giving children hope, pride and dignity through the gift of a brand new pair of school shoes. Through this simple act children in need are able to play, learn and have fun. The National Barefoot Day has been created to highlight the impact of not having the basics, in this case a pair of school shoes. Wil jy ’n loodgieter word? As loodgieter jou beroep is, spesialiseer jy in die installering en onderhoud van waterwerke, rioolwerke, dreine en ander pypleiding. Die woord loodgieter dateer uit die Romeinse Ryk en verwys na die giet van stroke lood en loodpype. Vandag word lood egter nie meer gebruik nie, omdat dit giftig is. Moderne pype word hoofsaaklik van plastiek of koper vervaardig (albei roes nie).
Tipiese take wat ’n loodgieter verrig, sluit in: installering van krane, pype en dreine; skoonmaak van dreine en verstopte pype; opspoor en herstel van lekkasies; installering van warmwatersilinders (soos geisers). Mense wat die beroep oorweeg, moet hardwerkend wees, nie deur vreemde reuke afgesit word nie, bereid wees om in vuil plekke in te kruip, en verstaan hoe dreinering en waterdruk werk.

Wat doen ’n elektrisiën? Die elektrisiën-beroep behels die aanlê en ondersteuning van die infrastruktuur wat nodig is vir die voorsiening van elektrisiteit. Daar is twee soorte elektrisiëns: lae spanning- en hoogspanningelektrisiëns. Van 0–1 000 volt word as lae spanning geklassifiseer (huishoudelike toestelle, ligte en huise se bedrading), terwyl 1 000– 288 000 volt as hoogspanning geklassifiseer word (masjinerie in fabrieke en kragdrade).
Die werk van ’n elektrisiën kan gevaarlik wees en spesiale maatreëls en deeglikheid word vereis om veilige werksomstandighede te verseker. Die beroep word oorwegend deur mans beoefen, hoewel vroue dit ook soms aanpak.

Blues was net-net baas en kon die wedstryd uiteindelik met 18-16 wen. Blues het aanvanklik goed begin en Riverstones onder geweldige druk gesit. Humeure het by tye gelyk of dit gaan handuit ruk, maar die skeidsregter het hom egter goed van sy taak gekwyt om nie die wedstryd te laat ontaard nie. Riverstones boer in Blues se kwartgebied maar laat die bal val, wat deur Gueron Kulsen opgeraap word wat uit sy eie kwart gebied onder sy teenstanders uithardloop om onder die pale te gaan druk. Bjorn Wicklow voeg die twee punte by om die telling 7-0 in Blues se guns te maak. Blues wat nou met alle mag aanval hardloop met elke bal wat hulle kry en Donnie Fredericks gaan druk nadat hy skoon onder Riverstones se manne uithardloop vir ’n welverdiende drie. Wicklow skop die doelskop mis en die telling bly 12-0. Ná ongedissiplineerde spel deur Blues kry Riverstones ’n strafskop wat hulle drie punte besorg. Met rustyd wat aanbreek kry Riverstones weer ’n strafskop ná on-
kantspel deur Blues en die telling skuif na 12-6 in Blues se guns. Ná rustyd begin Riverstones se groter voorspelers egter beheer oor die wedstryd neem en Blues word met mening terug gedryf. Een van Riverstones se spelers kry ’n rooikaart ná die skeidsregter hulle herhaaldelik gewaarsku het. Met Riverstones wat nou met veertien man speel, is hulle steeds die beste span op die veld en gaan druk ’n drie wat meer druk op Blues plaas. Ná onkantspel deur Riverstones is dit Wicklow wat ’n strafskop oorsit en die telling skuif aan na 15-6 in Blues se guns. Rivestones antwoord onmiddellik met ’n drie en die telling is nou 15-11 ná die doelskop mis is. Wicklow skop nog ’n strafskop oor en telling is nou 18-11 in Blues se guns. Met nog tien minute speeltyd oor is dit Rivestones wat nou op Blues se doellyn boer en aanval na aanval van stapel stuur. Riverstones se voorspelers hanteer goed en gaan druk, maar die doelskop is mis. Met die eindfluitjie wat blaas is dit Blues wat asem haal en die wedstryd met 18-16 wen. Blues sal egter harder moet werk as hulle as kampioene van die Paarl-streek gekroon wil word. Blues se tweede-span wen 15-7 en derde-span 20-3.
