Suicide is not the answer for poor results While most matriculants are celebrating the end of more than a decade of studying, others are dreading the release of examination results. Some may feel so overwhelmed that they could contemplate suicide. Hentie Malan, the branch manager at ER24’s Johannesburg West offices, said paramedics respond to numerous suicide cases at this time of year mainly due to the pressure of matric examinations. Suicide is not the answer for failing matric or not doing as well as you hoped. ER24 urges people contemplating suicide to consider the trauma family and friends may experience. Explaining the impact of suicide on loved ones, Jill Lithgow, the ER24 education training and development department manager, said, “People experience complete and utter devastation. Parents question what they have missed. It eats away at every fibre of what it means to be a parent. They wonder what they could have done differently when often there is nothing that could have been done. It destroys families and relationships.” Henning Jacobs, the trauma support co-ordinator at ER24, described scenes he attended. “The scene can be summed up as total shock. Nine out of 10 times the family did not expect the suicide. They usually state that the person did not show signs of stress or depression. They could not believe this person could do such a thing. The impact is severe and many people have breakdowns at suicide scenes due to the gruesome images of their loved ones who have committed suicide,” he said. Paramedics try their best to save patients. Malan said, “While resuscitating these patients I feel I need to do everything for this child to survive so they can talk to their parents, resolve problems and carry on with their lives,” he said. Lithgow said teen suicide is often associated with feelings of extreme helplessness, anxiety and the inability to see how they can continue in a situation. “Hopelessness seems to be an overarching emotion in suicide. People feel there is no way out. “Consider the pressure of 12 years at school culminating in one set of exams. Everything you have done leads you to this point. We are taught that without this magic matric we will amount to nothing. For most people this is a difficult thing to come to terms with. As we become older, we learn that this is not the case. The sense of despair, aloneness and complete helplessness in the situation and the inability to see a future seem to be a strong motivating factor. As parents we all want the best for our children, but this needs to be tempered against their best, not our perceived best,” she said. Lithgow added that it is a difficult balancing act because it is at this stage in a teen’s life where physiology also plays a big part in how they feel. She believes communication and honest open dialogue is necessary. Parents are advised to always be available
to talk to their children and work through problems together. Difficult situations may arise, but children need to know they are not alone and not in a helpless situation. Dr Robyn Holgate, the chief medical officer at ER24, said suicide is an unpredictable event. “We cannot say who is going to kill themselves. There are 23 suicides a day in South Africa and 230 attempts,” she said. She said people should obtain help for those who appear sad, are struggling to cope with the circumstances or express that they are contemplating suicide. “Make sure they know they can come to you. Be confidential, assure them that there is help and get the appropriate professional help. Reach out to that person in a caring way. Initially, when the person has attempted suicide, it may not be appropriate to talk to them. You may just want to reassure them and put them in a safe environment,” said Dr Holgate. According to her, some para-suicides are not attempts by the person to kill themselves, but a cry for help. “It is our opportunity as medical practitioners to reach out and help them overcome this feeling of helplessness, desperation and feeling that there is no one out there to assist them,” she said. People contemplating suicide must also take in consideration that attempted suicide can lead to brain damage, disfigurement or disability. Jacobs said there were some instances where people experienced brain damage to such an extent that they could no longer live a normal life. If you are feeling depressed, reach out for help. ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 084 124. - Issued by ER24

Star Star Signs Signs CAPRICORN
22 December to 21 January
Dreams, wishes, and fantasies about love are strong now, and you may be infatuated with someone you meet at this time, only to be disappointed later when you discover this person does not fulfill all of your expectations. You are simply not seeing people objectively now. Your imagination is very active and creative, however, and so is your yearning for something beautiful.
AQUARIUS
21 January To 20 February
Your feelings, friends, and female relatives figure prominently in your life now. You realize how much you appreciate and need their love and support, and you are particularly affectionate now. You may also initiate a relationship in which you take care of, support, and "baby" someone else.
PISCES
20 February to 21 March
Both friendship and material benefits may well come to you at this time. You feel very sociable and gregarious and seek conviviality, especially with people who really know how to have a good time. Charitable and philanthropic impulses are stronger now, also, and should be followed with positive action on your part.
ARIES
21 March to 21 April
Feelings of tenderness and love, especially for family or children, are very strong at this time. You want to shower loved ones with affection, to invite friends into your home, and to be pampered and cared for. Your relationships with women are very harmonious and positive now.
TAURUS
21 April to 21 May
At this time you enjoy emotional satisfaction and harmony in your home life. Relationships with women run smoothly. If you have a solid emotional base in your life, you will receive the benefits of that. If not, this is a good time to begin making connections with people and also to discover what gives real emotional nourishment and fulfillment.
GEMINI
21 May to 22 June
Your mind is directed inward now. Reflecting on your personal life, and the overall direction you are headed in, is very likely now. Thoughts of the past and the choices you made are also prominent. Making a decision regarding your home or your family life is favored at this time.
CANCER
22 June to 23 July
An irritable urge to be free of constraints, social obligations, or bureaucracy typifies this time period. You may inadvertently provoke the disapproval of colleagues, superiors, or other authorities through some presumptuous act on your part. Beware of overly optimistic schemes or self-indulgent purchases at this time also.
LEO
23 Julie to 24 August
The craving for sweetness and comfort in the form of loving affection or food is strong now. This is a good time to baby yourself and also to spend time with the people who love and appreciate you the most. Also, you are feeling rather tender and softhearted and may do something "maternal" on impulse (such as take home a stray kitten, offer to babysit, buy a gift for your family, etc.).
VIRGO
23 September to 23 October
At this time you come across in an appealing, charming, openly affectionate manner which is likely to win you new friends and admirers. You make an excellent first impression now. This is a very favorable time for doing something to enhance your appearance such as getting a hair cut or purchasing new clothing.
SCORPIO
23 October to 23 November
You are likely to come to a very clear, definite decision at this time and to let others know exactly what you want. You are not in a very conciliatory mood and are not averse to stirring up unpleasant controversy in defense of your plan, idea, or desire. You may speak or act in haste now which can be a cause of regret later on.

You the Entrepreneur: Ready for 2015? DAVID MALHERBE For some businesses the end of year is time to earn extra money because customers do extra shopping during the festive season. In contrast some businesses actually grind to a halt when many other businesses close such as those in the manufacturing and the building industry. But, no matter what kind of
business you’re in, it is a time for reflection on the year gone by. We often tend to only look at whether we made a bigger profit than the year before, or whether we were able to acquire the better equipment that was already long overdue. Perhaps your business did not achieve what you hoped for. Perhaps it was a difficult year and you are on the verge of closing down. Whatever your situation may be, I want to encourage you to not
only look at the circumstances but to also reflect on your personal life. In Proverbs 4:23 we read, “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.” The way to a better tomorrow and a new year starts with the way we think. If you think you are beaten, you are. If you think you can, you will. Therefore, if this year was not what you hoped for, do not only hope for a better year to come, start to plan what you will do differently. If you carry on the same way as this year, expect the same outcome. We need to change our ways if we want to improve and grow our businesses.
The National Lotteries Board (NLB) officially invites applications for funding from charity organisations involved in early childhood development (ECD), Charlotte Mampane, the chief executive officer of the NLB announced recently. Charities traditionally receive 45% of the nearly R2 billion annual funding pool, which represents the largest share of funds available to the NLB for distribution to qualifying organisations. Mampane says the funding allocation is targeted towards infrastructure development projects for ECD centres. “Preference will be given to applications from early childhood development centres in specific priority areas and organisations that advance rural, underprivileged and poor communities
to support development in the 0 – 5 years age group,” says Mampane. Established ECD centres can apply for up to a maximum of R3,8 million for project management of new infrastructure over a period of two years. Mampane says applications from new or existing beneficiaries are welcomed. “However, the NLB will naturally insist that all beneficiaries submit the necessary mandatory documents, in order to be considered for funding.” The closing date for submission of applications is Friday 13 February. Late applications will not be considered. For more information, applicants are encouraged to contact the NLB call centre on 08600 65383 or visit www.nlb.org.za/charities.

ER24 reminds members of the public, however, to keep in mind everyone’s safety while celebrating over the holidays. Vereeniging Base branch manager, Andre Bronkhorst, said prior to starting a braai or any other open fire, consider keeping a fire extinguisher close by. Good ventilation is essential as smoke and gases from a fire A braai can possibly kill someone. “Ensure all flammable solids and liquids are in a safe place. Ensure you are permitted to start a fire where you want to braai,” said Bronkhorst. You should also ensure the weather conditions are conducive for a braai. If you are expecting strong winds, start the braai in an area where runaway fires can be avoided. The braai stand should not be in a position where it blocks the only escape in the event of a fire. The braai stand should also be sturdy. You must be able to place some weight on the stand without it collapsing. Ensure it won’t topple over if bumped. Also ensure there is no chance of burning coal falling out of the stand. Bronkhorst said the safest way to start a fire is by using old paper or firelighters. But if preferred, liquid firelighters, diesel, petrol, alcohol and thinners should be used cautiously as they may have a different reaction from conventional firelighters. Remember a fire started with fuel can transfer from the braai stand to the container holding the fuel. If fuel is poured and then lit, be cautious of the gas released. It can cause a larger flame than anticipated. If you use wood, make sure you choose wisely. For example, wood from the Tamboti tree, part of the euphorbia family, should be avoided. Smoke from this wood can cause nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, severe stomach cramps and even death. Cedar wood should also be avoided, as its smoke may be harmful. Most wood
fire from evergreen trees release more creosote and increase the possibility of poisoning and fires. Adult supervision is non-negotiable when children are around open fires. Children tripping and falling into or against an open fire resulting in serious burns is a possibility. Flying embers may also cause injuries to children. “Unsupervised children may also play with fire and cause flash fires and severe injury to themselves and others. Children walking past braai stands may not think the stand is hot and accidentally place their hands on the braai, resulting in severe burn wounds,” said Bronkhorst. Every parent should educate their children about the danger of fires. Teach them what to expect, do and not do. “Few people realise it but throwing sealed glass containers or plastic containers with some fluid in a fire can cause an explosion. The fluid in the container heats and lets off steam. This increases the pressure in the container causing it to forcefully rupture,” said Bronkhorst. In case of burns: ) Remove the person from the heat source. ) If possible, remove clothes and jewellery. It is important to do this before swelling begins, however, avoid breaking blisters. ) Keep the affected area under lukewarm water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. If the burn area is affecting the person’s face, ensure the person
is able to breathe while cooling the wound with water. ) A burn wound that causes the skin to become red only, generally does not need extensive treatment. However, any wound that causes a blister larger than the surface of one’s palm needs to be seen by a medical professional. ) Never apply oil-based substances to any burn. Some people believe butter, oil or shoe polish will treat the burn. However, the person stands a greater chance of infection and further wound damage if the correct substances are not applied. ) Phone ER24 on 084 124 in case of burns. Types of burns explained People can sustain first, second or third-degree burns. Below is a description of each: ) First-degree (superficial) burns affect only the epidermis (outer layer of skin). The wound is generally red and painful but no blisters appear on the burn surface. ) Second-degree (partial thickness) burns. Second-degree burns involve the epidermis and part of the dermis layer of skin. This burn injury may produce severe pain and blisters may show on the burn injury. ) Third-degree (full thickness) burns. This burn wound affects the skin all the way to the muscle or fatty tissue. These burn wounds generally have a waxy appearance and may be painless as the burn may be deep enough to damage the underlying nerves. Memorise the word PASS to remember how to use a fire extinguisher if needed. P - Pull. Pull the safety pin. A - Aim. Aim at the base of the flames (the burning material not the flames). S - Squeeze. Apply pressure to the handle to open the valve and release the extinguisher’s contents. S - Sweep. Move the extinguisher in a sweeping motion. Remember, ER24’s Emergency Contact Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 084 124.
