KG headlines comedy night ON Thursday 27 September at 19:00 at the Old Mill Theatre in Paarl, LOL Comedy will host comedy sensation KG, the latest wonderkid to hit the national comedy scene. The brainchild of young local actor John Koopman, LOL Comedy Nights is the first-ever stand-up comedy showcase in the Paarl Valley. It will take place every last Thursday of the Kagiso “KG” month at the Old Mill Theatre. Kagiso, or KG as he is affectionately known, is well and truly on his way to becoming a true comedy heavyweight – having performed alongside the likes of Rob van Vuuren, Mark Palmer, Ndumiso Lindi, Kurt Schoonraad, Riaad Moosa and Stuart Taylor.
Popular on the national comedy circuit, KG is a regular performer at comedy venues around South Africa including outdoor music festivals in Cape Town like Rocking the Daisies, Synergy Live and Rocking the River. He is currently on the line-up for the Vodacom Funny Festival 2012 at the Baxter Theatre. The son of a sangoma, KG takes his audiences on a unique and hilarious comedy journey with a glimpse into the behind the scenes practices of a sangoma, what it’s like having one you call dad and why he was never been able to take a day off sick from school. His take on what is regarded as an unknown is yet another first for South African comedy. With world-class comedy, this one hour showdown will leave audiences laughing for days. Tickets at R50 per person can be booked with John Koopman on lolcomedy@jcooper.co.za or 072 891 0460.

Race Card with Siv Ngesi FRESH from rave reviews and a sell out season at the recent Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Siv Ngesi, who brought you the hit comedy Dekaf, is back with his brand-new one man comedy show, Race Card, based on Simon Kilpatrick’s bestselling book The Racist’s Guide To The People Of South Africa. Siv will bring Race Card to the Old Mill Theatre on Friday 28 September at 19:00. In Race Card, which Siv describes as a ‘racially active’ production, he pokes fun at the wacky truths and quirks of the colourful people of South Africa, drawing a similarity to The Racist’s Guide To The People Of South Africa which has been described as a politically incorrect, thoroughly unscientific and exceptionally funny satirical “guidebook” that identifies - and makes light hearted fun of - the people of the Rainbow Nation. It’s written for foreigners and for all the South Africans it parodies, noting from the start that “Blacks”, “English Whites”, “Afrikaners”, “Coloureds”, “Indians” and “Miscellaneous” are the primary races to be encountered in the land. Tickets at R100 can be booked with John Koopman on 072 891 0460. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Kaartjies is R45 en kan bespreek word by Vicky by 083 564 0056 of vstemmet@ gmail.com.

Be a hero - waste zero
DEVIDEAN MOSES
THE Drakenstein Municipality recently presented its annual Waste Week programme to coincide with National Recycling Week. Schools in Drakenstein who participated in the Waste Week poster competition won big prizes. The first prize was awarded to Langabuya Primary who received R2 000, while the second prize of R1500 was presented to Mbekweni Primary. Paarlzicht Primary and Ronwe Primary shared the third prize and received R1000 each. Learners of the participating schools could also compete in the individual section. Sixoliso Lombozo of Langabuya received the first prize of R750 for his creative poster. The runners-up were Masiza Nomvuyo and Somdaka Ayanda both of Mbekweni Primary, Erin O’Dowd of Hugenote Primary and Kim-Kelly Williams of Paarlzicht (R250 each). “The reason for us having this kind of event is to create awareness amongst our citizens but more specifically with our youth as they are the future of this country,” says Ronald Brown, engineer of waste services. Residents need to take ownership of recycling, but it is even better to form partnerships in the community, with friends, with organisations and also with the Municipality’s Waste Management Division. The Junior Council and other scholars recently cleaned the Chicago area to show their support of a clean environment. Ronald Brown says: “If I look at our

month to month statistics then I’m saddened to inform you that we’re losing the battle of illegal dumping, but as a Municipality we will not stop with initiatives to overcome this to ensure that our communities are living in a clean and healthy environment as enshrined in our constitution.” Ronald advised learners and the community to start cleaning in front of their houses and pick up papers lying in the street. He also said that anyone can report illegal dumping to the Municipality and should provide the registration number of the vehicle in order for them to prevent the breeding of rats in unhygienic areas. Neighbourhoods can also organise their own clean-up campaign. The average recycling rate is only 32% and the Municipality needs to improve on this to extend the lifespan of the Landfill Site which will be full by 2018 at current (500m3/day) rates. “There is an assumption that waste creates jobs, but the Municipality could have spent this money constructively elsewhere.” In other countries the people are so focused on putting their litter in a bin, because they are focused on the environment they are living in. “This is all a mindset, a behaviour change which we all need to adopt soon. “How many of you have thanked the ‘Garbage Man’ for removing your waste?” he asked the children. “Let’s join hands to make Drakenstein the cleanest town and the place of opportunity,” said Ronald. For more information on waste, contact 021 870 45 00.
