Drug abuse is damaging South Africa’s youth The drug problem in South Africa is extremely serious, with drug usage reported as being at twice the world norm. Over 15% of our population has a drug problem.
In light of South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’ (Sanca) drug awareness week which was held from 24 to 28 June and Youth Month, now is the perfect time to place drug abuse in the spotlight. According to Patrizia Scalone from Metapsychetc, substance abuse can simply be defined as a pattern of harmful use of any substance for mood-altering purposes that gives rise to both physical and psychological dependence. “Dependence results in mental, emotional, biological or physical, social and economic instability. The effects of substance abuse on an individual form the basis of its increasing effects on society. This is a major danger of substance abuse,” she explains. Studies show that people who start drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to become alcoholics. School kids who use alcohol or drugs are three times more likely to get involved in violent crimes. Frighteningly the average age of drug dependency in South Africa is 12 years old and dropping. Along with peer pressure, there are several other major factors that can influence the abuse of drugs among youths namely weak parental control, child abuse, imitation, emotional
stress, truancy among students, the availability of the drugs and the ineffectiveness of laws on drug trafficking. No matter how much or often substances are consumed, if drug use is causing problems in the person’s life – at work, school, home or relationships – there is likely a substance abuse or addiction problem. “In many cases, there is a fine line between regular use, substance abuse and addiction. Very few addicts are able to recognise when they have crossed that line,” says Scalone. “The good news is, however, that with the right treatment and support, the disruptive effects of drug use can be counteracted and control can be regained. The first obstacle is to recognise and admit a problem, or listen to loved ones who are often better able to see the negative effects of drug use.” The social and economic costs related to youth substance abuse are high. They result from the financial losses and distress suffered by alcohol and drug related crime victims, increased burdens for the support of young adults who are not able to become self supporting, and greater demands for medical and other treatment services for these youths. Substance abuse is associated with both violent and income generating crimes by youths. Gangs, trafficking, prostitution and growing numbers of youth homicides are among the social and criminal justice problems often linked to adolescent substance abuse.

Some businesses sell services, some goods and others goods accompanied by a service, e.g. fitting tyres on your motor vehicle. But unless buying something from a vending machine or withdrawing money from an ATM, there is usually some form of service delivery in almost every business transaction. It is important to remember that the employee in your business who serves the customer is the face of your business. Did you train that employee how to treat your most valuable asset, your clients? Actually we should call them guests, because they do us a favour to do business with us. They are the reason why the company exists. Without them we have no business. Because a service is inseparable from the person who renders the service, it is important that the employees who attend to the customers’ needs are well equipped to do so. Are they friendly, do they have the necessary product knowledge, does the waiter know the menu by heart, do they portray excellence in dealing with customers, etc? If not, remember the future of your business rests in their hands. Method: Dissolve the chicken stock powder, garam masala and ground cumin in 2 cups (500 ml) beer. Place the chicken in a potjie or stockpot. Arrange the potatoes and onions around it and pour over the beer stock. Sprinkle over the pepper and thyme. Simmer on medium-low heat, or cook in the oven at 180ºC, for about 1 hour. After about an hour, increase the heat a little and taste the sauce. Season with salt and pepper if needs be, or even a little brown sugar if you prefer a sweeter dish. Now add three-quarters of the cream and stir gently for 10 minutes. Taste the sauce again and decide if you need more cream (if it is too thin or too salty, you will need to add more). Siyakhula Day Care needs your help Siyakhula Day Care is a back-yard centre situated in Silvertown, Mbekweni, rendering their services in a 13x3 m container to 80 children. The owner of the property, however, has asked the day care centre to move as they need to use the property. Siyakhula Day Care is therefore forced to remove their container as soon as possible. They have found another property close-by to move their container to, but they need someone with moving equipment who can help them move the container. A ROAD RACE FOR HIV/AIDS: An amount of R6 000 was collected during the annual HIV/Aids Road Race which was held at Hawequa Correctional Services in Wellington last year, in conjunction with Paarl Post, CPUT, Wellington Spar, Boland Drukpers and Paarl Ambulance Services. On 21 May the money was donated to the TC Newman AVR Clinic and the Break Through Community Centre in Wellington. The money will be allocated towards HIV/Aids care. The next road race is planned for 15 September. CELEBRATING YOUTH DAY: Paarl police in partnership with Correctional Services and local businesses hosted the annual Youth Day Celebrations at Drakenstein Correctional Services. Ronwe Primary School won the netball event and Dal Josaphat Primary School won the rugby. The day was attended by former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers, and Blue Bulls player Clayton Blommetjies was amongst the guest speakers at the event. NEW CHALLENGE FOR TRAFFIC CHIEF: From next week, veteran Drakenstein Test Centre traffic chief, Cavin Cornelissen will be at the helm of the traffic department of the Berg River Municipality which comprises Piketberg, Porterville and Velddrif. Membership will be open to all retired persons no longer in full employment who wish to stay mentally and physically active. U3A was started in France in 1973 with courses that were academic in content. When it reached the United Kingdom, South Africa and other countries, it changed in nature to become more of a selfhelp organisation. It is known that retired people have a vast amount of experience and knowledge. This can be conveyed to those who wish to learn by way of study or interest groups. numbers, equipment needs, venue costs and so forth, fees should be less than R100 per year. All tuition is on a volunteer basis and there will be no costs other than for materials consumed. Monthly meetings will be held and conducted in English and Afrikaans. There will be a guest speaker addressing a topic of interest. Relevant announcements will be made and it will be an opportunity for members to meet and discuss needs. Courses which will be offered will include computers, languages, arts, crafts, music, history, bridge, yoga and hiking. An inaugural meeting at which membership applications can be filled in to assess interest in U3A and appoint a committee to co-ordinate and administer to the needs of U3A, will be held at 10:00 on Thursday 4 July at De Poort Historical Village.

ENVIRONMENT EXPO AND YOUTH CONFERENCE: Drakenstein Municipality Environmental Management Section recently had an Environment Expo and Youth Conference at the Paarl East Thusong Centre. The purpose of this event was to enhance environmental education and awareness amongst pupils in the Drakenstein Municipal area. KLEUTERS IS DANKBAAR: Pippies Kleuterskool is dankbaar teenoor een van die Hoërskool Gimnasium se finaliste in die Mej. Interskole-kompetisie, Elize van der Walt (middel links), wat uitgereik het na hul skool en die gr. R-klas bederf het met speelgoed. Saam met haar is die klasonderwyser, Marlesa Blignaut (middel regs) en die opgewonde leerlinge.
KOMMUNIKASIEWEEK VIR KLEUTERS: As deel van Pippies Kleuterskool se kommunikasieweek het die kleuters gekyk na briewe en hoe om dit te versend. EXHIBITION FOR YOUTH MONTH: As part of its Youth Month celebrations, Allandale Correctional Services participated, with various government departments, NGOs and businesses, in a Youth Day exhibition at the Thusong Centre in Paarl East. Correctional Services exhibited arts and craft of inmates after they acquired some artistic skills while in detention. Young people were also enlightened on various important topics. Teens from schools in the Drakenstein, Stellenbosch and Breede Valley Municipal areas attended the exhibition.
