Plaaslike spellers WOW Suid-Afrika se beste spellers het onlangs met hul vernuf in Stellenbosch kom spog. Hoër- en laerskoolleerlinge van reg oor die land het Saterdag 20 Oktober aan die eerste Nasionale WOW-spelfees by die Universiteit Stellenbosch (US) kom deelneem. “Jy is alreeds ’n wenner net omdat jy vandag hier is.” Só is gr. 1 tot 10-leerlinge by dié geleentheid verwelkom.

Buckle your children up and save their lives Safety in a car is always one of the biggest aspects when you buy a car. The question always asked are how many airbags or how good the braking system is. But the main safety feature in the car are the seat belts. How often do we drive home or even to work without our seatbelts fastened because it’s just around the corner and nothing could happen to me? Or, I won’t be in an accident because I’m a good driver. Excuses that paramedics hear include: I’m afraid the seatbelt will keep me trapped in the car in case of an accident; it is uncomfortable or I don’t need a seatbelt because I have airbags. Then, unexpectedly you or your children are involved in an accident and sustain serious or fatal injuries. We take it for granted that nothing can happen to us. Most fatalities in accidents are because the occupants of the motor vehicle were either ejected or where thrown around inside the car as the car rolled or collided with another vehicle.
ER24’s paramedics are called to accidents daily where children and adults sustained injuries. When it comes to children, parents often ask: How did this happen, why did my child die? The concern is, where do we as parents draw the line in safety for our children. Especially when our children are travelling with other road users and the vehicle they are travelling in may be overloaded. Children are extremely vulnerable in collisions. ) Children should be seated and fastened in a car seat where possible. ) Never travel with your child on your lap. ) Never share a seatbelt with your child. ) Children have no say or choice whether to wear a seatbelt or not, it is the responsibility and legal obligation of the driver to make sure they wear it. ) It takes just a few seconds to buckle up to help save a life.

Rooibos tea can be juiced up for kids As the weather gets warmer, mothers should give some thought to hydration when packing their children’s lunchboxes. Ensuring children get enough of the right kinds of liquids, particularly during the hot summer months, can be as important as making sure they’re properly fed. Mild or moderate dehydration can lead to sleepiness or tiredness and even headaches and dizziness, making it difficult for children to pay attention in class. In more severe cases delirium or even unconsciousness can occur. Packing a water bottle isn’t always a guarantee that children will drink enough to compensate for fluids they lose during break times or playing sports. Water can be bland and tasteless, particularly after a couple of hours in a plastic water bottle, so children simply don’t drink it. The alternative is to add some sort of cordial and while this may make it more appealing, not all of these are particularly healthy options.
A glass of rooibos tea the perfect drink. Many people tend to think of rooibos only as a hot drink, but it is an exceptional flavour enhancer and naturally sweet, which makes it a favourite ingredient for iced teas, fruit shakes, smoothies and iced lollies. Furthermore it contains no caffeine, fats or carbohydrates and its proven health benefits include boosting immune systems, relieving allergies and preventing heart disease and cancer. According to Prof Jeanine Marnewick of Cape Peninsula University of Technology, rooibos is a natural thirst
quencher and drinking the equivalent of six cups a day – hot or cold – will provide sustained health benefits. Making a simple rooibos iced tea is easy. Simply make a litre of rooibos tea using four to six teabags. Sweeten the tea with honey to taste and leave it in the fridge to cool overnight. You can then experiment with this basic iced tea, adding mint, lemon, orange, granadilla, mango or apple or a combination of flavours until you find one that your children really love. Juiced or squeezed fresh fruit usually deliver the best results, but you can also use preservative-free fruit juice. Mixing it with cold rooibos will make it go further and keeping a jug of the children’s favourite iced tea in the fridge should mean you don’t have to keep buying juice. Cold rooibos can be kept in the fridge for up to two weeks. By pouring some iced tea into popsicle containers or ice-cube trays and freezing it, you can also make fun, refreshing, healthy after school or sports treats.

’N EIE TUIN VIR THEMBINKOSI-DAGSORGSENTRUM: Die lente is onlangs behoorlik gevier by die Thembinkosi-dagsorgsentrum in Mbekweni.

HIKING: Nineteen members of the Paarl Scouts spent a weekend on Table Mountain, having walked up the Jeep track from Constantia Nek via the dams. The Scout hut provided much needed comfort from the weather, since it rained most of the weekend. Indoor activities were the order of the day due to the treacherous weather. The group hiked up to the Waterworks museum and under the wall of the Hely-Huchinson Dam, then over the top of the wall of the Woodhead reservoir, on their way to the site of the old cable station. After lunch a tired, weary and wet contingent of scouts plus their troop leaders made their way back down the mountain by the same route they came up.

Keep stress under control during exams WITH the end of the year exams around the corner, you may already be feeling the pressure. There are ways to make your life less frantic during this period so that you can perform at your best. Remember cramming, an exam trademark, is not going to do your brain or nerves any favours. “That’s why it makes sense to start planning for your exams as soon as you receive your exam timetable,” says Dr Judy Jaye, training development manager at The Stress Clinic in Johannesburg, an affiliate of The Voice Clinic situated in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. Here are some useful tips to keep in mind when you clean your desk and start studying in earnest: ) Determine the amount of work you have to cover, the time that it may take you to do so and set up a study schedule. “Your best bet is to set four weeks aside for studying and two weeks for revision. This will give you ample time to internalise your study material and ask for help with difficult subjects or topics. ) Divide your study material for each subject into bite-sized chunks and allocate them to specific hours or days on your schedule. Although tempting, don’t make your least favourite subjects, your last priority”, says Judy. ) Plan your time, draw up a realistic schedule and stick to it. Include some relaxation as it is not healthy to have your nose in your books all the time. Break up your time with short breaks. ) Don’t be unrealistic. You have a good idea of what you are capable of. Being realis-
tic about your results will help prevent you from being disappointed when the results come. ) Avoid alcohol or recreational drugs; that is not the way to deal with your stress right now. Also try not to drink too much coffee, the caffeine won’t help you to concentrate. ) Revise methodically; simply reading long swathes of text is not going to help you remember facts and figures. ) Write out important dates, facts or passages, use lots of coloured pens and underline key phrases. Go back over these notes a day later and a week after that. Your memory will be better and you will feel more confident about your exams. ) Test yourself or get someone to test you on your notes. Regular testing means that you remember facts better and any gaps in your knowledge can be picked up in good time and that makes the actual exam a lot less stressful ) Stick post-its with key facts and phrases on them around your room. After a while these facts will sink in. ) Ignore your friends, not entirely of course. Don’t use them as a benchmark, know yourself and know what you have to do. You are in this for yourself. ) There is a great source of support available, all you have to do is ask. Ask a teacher if you don’t understand a particular topic, or there is always your mom and dad or siblings. ) Remember, exercise is a great way to give yourself a break and to maximise your concentration span. A 15-minute jog or a brisk walk is all you have to do.
