SAFARI HALFMARATHON: n Rekord getal van 12 000 drawwers het Woensdagoggend die vroeë oggendure aangedurf om deel te neem aan die 26ste Safari Halfmarathon op Wellington. Drakenstein-burgemeester het om presies 07:10 die sneller getrek om die halfmarathon aan die gang te sit. Die wenners in die vroue-afdeling was, eerste Bulelwa Fimae (01:22), tweede Asiphi Fikabalanjana (01:23) en derde Bernice van Zyl (01:26). Global Spotlight’s talent search is on in Paarl

Global Spotlight is again taking place this year and singers and actors between the ages of 15 and 25 have until 30 April to enter this exciting talent-search competition. Method: Heat the olive oil in a large pot and sauté the garlic, carrots, herbs, onion and bacon for a few minutes on high heat. Add the meat allowing it to brown. When mixed through, add the can of chopped tomatoes. Set the stove on medium to low heat, cover and let it cook until the meat is cooked and the carrots are soft. You might want to give it a stir every now and then. Set aside. Prepare the béchamel sauce: Heat the butter on medium to high heat in another saucepan until melted, remove from stove and add the flour. Whisk and then add the milk. Give it another whisk through to ensure that there are no lumps. Put it back on the heat and whisk as it heats up, cooks through and thickens to your liking.

Spit bolle soos Galtonia, Liatris, Childanthus en Zephyrantes wat uit somerreënstreke afkomstig is uit, tensy dit in goed gedreineerde grond geplant is. Saai elke drie tot vier weke klein saaisels ertjies en boerbone direk. Plant ’n paar rye geelwortels, preie, witwortels en rape, asook saad of saailinge van blaarslaai, spinasie en kopkool. Maak ’n grondbedekking vir Azaleas en Kamelias en onthou om ’n paar hande vol veen vir elke vierkante meter grond te strooi om die grond suur te hou. Snoei by Dahlias die groei terug tot ongeveer 20 cm bo die grond, los dit vir drie weke en lig dit versigtig uit met ’n vurk om skade te voorkom. Verwyder ou en beskadigde groei en besprinkel dit met Bexadust. Etiketteer dit versigtig en bêre dit onder ’n dun lagie grond. Hou dit kurkdroog. Plant die laaste van Freesias, Lachenalias en suurknolle vroeg in Mei om ’n mooi vertoning in Julie te verseker. Dis ook tyd om lelies te plant sowel as Hollandse irisse, tulpe, hiasinte en affodille. Gee proteas twee keer per week water om groei te verseker. Onthou om nie om proteas te spit nie omdat hulle nie daarvan hou dat hul wortels versteur word nie. Viooltjies is nou vol in die blom. Plant dit dig om ’n goeie vertoning te verseker. En nou is dit ook tyd om pronkertjies (sweet peas) te plant sodat hulle in die lente pragtige kleur kan voorsien. Vir ’n mooi grasperk in die lente, sny dit tot op die grond en vul die oop kolle met bogrond. Steek gate met ’n tuinvurk en hark die gras. Strooi dan ’n laag kompos bo-oor.

Sprinkle the top of the béchamel layer with grated Parmesan cheese and paprika, and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. A knife should easily glide into the baked lasagna when it’s done. Serve hot with a side of salads, or healthy vegetables.

PAPIERVLIEGTUIGIES: Groendal Primêr in Franschhoek het verlede week deelgeneem aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (Ingenieursdepartement) se kompetisie vir “papiervliegtuig-ontwerp en -bou”. Die leerlinge het eerste en derde plekke gewen vir die “beste ontwerp en innovasie” asook ’n tweede plek vir die papiervliegtuig wat die langste in die lug gesweef het. By hulle hier is Donovan Mackier (wiskunde-vakhoof by Groendal Primêr).
MAGNOLIA SÊ DANKIE: Die opgradering van seunstoilette by Magnolia Primêre Skool is moontlik gemaak deur JLK Construction en die subkontrakteur The Tilehouse. Hier verskyn die seuns saam met Brendon Esau, projekbestuurder van JLK. Die seuns van Magnolia is baie dankbaar vir die skenking.
OESFEESDIENS: Annunciation Kerk Paarl wat vanjaar hul 50ste bestaansjaar vier het onlangs hul jaarlikse Oesfeesdiens gehou. Did you know that a BSc degree can be the start of a professional career as a microbiologist, a laser physicist, an exploration geologist, a software program developer, an environmental consultant or a laboratory technologist, to name but a few? Yet most young people and their parents are inclined to only consider mainstream careers such as doctors, engineers or attorneys. “Few people realise how many job opportunities are available for people with a BSc qualification,” explains Mariétta van den Worm, chief organiser of the popular Maties Science Winter Week, which will be held this year from 23 to 27 June on the campus of Stellenbosch University (SU). The Winter Week, hosted annually by SU's Faculty of Science, offers grade 11 and 12 pupils with an interest in mathematics, physical sciences and life sciences the opportunity to learn more about BSc-related study programmes and career opportunities. This includes programmes in chemistry, physics, geoinformatics, sport sciences, the environment, mathematical sciences, human life sciences, earth sciences and molecular biology and biotechnology. “We tell the learners more about the study
programmes they can follow to find work in industries and companies that, for example, develop new textiles and paints, or look after data security at banks, or develop new medicines,” says Van den Worm. The week’s programme includes talks about the different study programmes offered by the Faculty of Science, a visit to the Cape Town Planetarium and various motivational and informational sessions. The highlight on the programme is the “Date with a Scientist” during which pupils can pose questions to people holding BSc degrees and who are now working in industry, academic or at research institutions. The Winter Week is presented in conjunction with the Science Students Committee and the Centre for Prospective Students at SU, and includes an introduction to the campus. “It is ideal for those learners who want to find out how they can convert their interest in chemistry, maths, cells, plants, animals, atoms, genetics and graphs into a successful career,” concluded Van den Worm. The fee of R1 300 includes all meals and accommodation in a university residence. The deadline for applications is 18 May. Application forms are available at www.sun.ac.za/science.

Cycling at Diemersfontein I f you are a keen cyclist or would just like to enjoy a 20 km fun ride, MTN will be hosting the next round of the National Mountain Bike Series.
The event will take place on 11 and 12 May at Diemersfontein Country & Wine Estate in Wellington. On Saturday cyclists can take part in the 110 km MTN Ultra, which starts at 07:45 or the Elite women’s race (75 km), which starts at 07:50. On Saturday there will also be a 75 km MTN Marathon XCM at 08:15. On Sunday cyclists can look forward to a 40 km Nissan half XCM at 08:00 and a 20 km fun race at 08:40. The rocky terrain with fynbos and vineyards
guarantees a spectacular ride. Registration is at Diemersfontein Country & Wine Estate on Friday 10 May from 14:00 until 20:00, Saturday 11 May from 06:30 until 09:00 and Sunday 12 May from 06:30 until 08:30. Online entries can be done at www.advendurance.com and will close at midnight on 5 May. Late entries will be available at registration on Friday, as well as Saturday and Sunday morning. Riders are requested to bring their number boards, which are personal boards to be used at all MTN, Nissan Series and SAS Seeding friendly events. A replacement fee of R50 will be charged for lost boards. New boards will also be issued on the day if riders do not yet have one.
FUN IN THE SUN: More than 12 000 runners recently took part in the 26th Safari Half Marathon which was held in Wellington. This year saw a record field of runners with more than 5 500 people running the premier 21.1km race. Spectators lined the finish line. The winners in the women’s race were, first Bulelwa Fimae (01:22), second Asiphi Fikabalanjana (01:23) and third Bernice van Zyl (01:26). In the men’s category the winners were first Lloyd Bosman (1:06), second Norman Dlomo (01:07) and third Andries Pongwana (01:07).

Vineyards edge out Lower Blues Daljosafat Stadium was packed to capacity for a much anticipated clash between both the log-leaders Vineyards and Lower Paarl Blues. Log-leaders Vineyards raced to a 20-0 lead in the first half, then withstood a ferocious counter-attack from Lower Paarl Blues to record a 29-28 victory in their topof-the-log clash in the Paarl region competition. Vineyards struggled in their previous game and narrowly beat Rangers last week after some poor play, but the victory against second-placed Blues took the men in maroon to 18 points and put them back in charge of the Paarl region. Vineyards looked like they would run away with the game after a high-tempo start. They were leading 20-0 only 20 minutes into the game with tries by scrumhalf Alvin Farmer, hooker Mario Kok and fullback Robin Andrews. Andrews’s try was especially memorable as it came after a powerful run from wing Sharief Mack, who ran over and around four Blues players. With Blues on attack, flank Sulaimaan Antar managed a turnover on the Vineyards try-line, Mack received the ball and ran 50 metres before finding Andrews, who scooped up the kick ahead and sprinted more than 40 metres for his try.
Dayne Petersen added 5 points with the boot to give Vineyards a comfortable lead. Vineyards lost forward Imirie Lategan who was sin- binned in the last 10 minutes of the first half and Lower Paarl managed to score and convert going into the break trailing 7-23. A controversial decision by the referee, who red-carded Vineyards lock Conroy Peters within the first five minutes of the second half for a high tackle, meant that Vineyards had to finish the game with 14 men. Lower Paarl took advantage of this and almost managed a huge comeback leading 28-26 with one minute to go. Blues had tons of scoring opportunities but the 14-man Vineyards team defended their try-line like Trojans with impact players Junaid Moerat (hooker), Zaahir Chippendale (flank) and Shukri Moerat (centre) leading from the front in the defensive effort. Just as celebrations in the Blues camp started, Vineyards received a penalty in the dying minutes of the game and flyhalf Randal Geldenhuys slotted a 40 metre penalty to secure a 29-28 victory. Vineyards’s second team, who played the last 10 minutes with two players in the sin bin, managed to score a bonus point victory. Both Vineyards’s first and second teams top their respective logs after round 4.
