Man dies after mob justice attack
FOTO: TANDYLEE MARINUS
A man who spent the past seven months in hospital after being assaulted in an alleged mob justice attack in Mbekweni, has died. Wandile Magama (25) from Wallacedene near Kraaifontein was admitted to Groote Schuur Hospital on 20 April after he was assaulted, allegedly by community members of New Drommedaris, Mbekweni, who believed that he was involved in crime in the area. He had sustained multiple injuries and had since been treated in hospital. He succumbed to his injuries at 01:45 on 2 November. A case of murder is now being investigated by the Mbekweni Police. Anyone with information about the incident can contact them on 021 868 9900.
Vir verdere navrae, bel Luzelle Moller by 021 807 4741.

The Paarl West Community Policing Forum (CPF) in partnership with the Paarl Police would like to inform the public of the crime trends as recorded for October. ) Residential burglaries: In the Northern Paarl, Groenvlei and Lemoenkloof areas, the following streets were targeted for residential burglaries: Alexander, Bethel, Carletta, Nicola, School, Optenhorst, Berlyn, Keurtjie, Prins, Bergpypie, Main Road and Coetzee Avenue. frames were between 06:00 and 18:00. In the farming area, residential burglaries occurred in Voorpaardeberg, Windmeul, Bo Dal, Swawelstert, Roggeland, Lustigan, Kliprug, Wemmershoek and Nieuwedrift Roads. One arrest was made Incidents occurred mostly on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 10:00 and 12:00 and between 14:00 and 16:00. ) Business burglaries: Business burglaries are matter of concern. Incidents occurred in the Alkmaar, Voorschoten, Oosterland, Lady Grey, Van der Lingen, New, Jan van Riebeeck Drive, Arboretum Road, Devine, Main Road, Chapelle, Gymnasiuim, Mill, Retief, Berlyn, Station, Cecilia and Hospital Street areas. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays were the most common days for these incidents. Four arrests have been made. ) Theft out of/from motor vehicles: This also remains a concern of the Paarl Police as is indicated every week. About 60 incidents were reported for the month. In most cases, a window was broken to gain entrance to the vehicle. Although arrests were made, it does not prevent such incidents. People are still negligent and leaving valuable items in their vehicles. ) Possession of stolen property: About 24 arrests were made for the possession of stolen property. It is vitally important that members of the public mark their goods and also report stolen goods. This often ensures that the suspect can be linked to a burglary or theft case. ) Reminder: The CPF will be holding its annual general meeting (AGM) on 12 November. All businesses, NGOs, NPOs and departments are reminded to complete a membership form and to forward it to paarlwestcpf@lantic.net. The AGM will be taking place at House Paarl Valley in Hospital Street, Paarl, at 19:00.

Leef voluit met diabetes MRS GOLD FORCASH GOLD DR. JOHANNES THERON
Almal is baie welkom, skakel hul by 021 872 0005 of 021 872 4000.

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Nomafrench Mbombo (left) and Minister Anton Bredell (Acting Premier of the Western Cape) visited Diana Linee, the widow of Tinus Linee who passed away on Monday after a lengthy battle with motor neuron disease. They expressed their sympathy and conveyed condolences to the Linee family on behalf of the Western Cape Government. Both expressed their gratitude to Tinus for his role as a pivotal sportsman who lead by example. “He was an amazing example to everyone. As a sportsman and even when he was on his sickbed, he continued to live a full life,” said Bredell. Tinus is survived by Diana, daughter Dieuwke-Jean (from a previous marriage) and Diana’s two sons, Jean and Breyton Fransman. A memorial service was held yesterday at the Boland Park Cricket ground in honour of Tinus. The funeral takes place on Saturday at 10:00 at the VGK Huguenot. Mourners are asked to park their vehicles at the Strauss Hall. Thereafter the procession will leave to the Parys Cemetery.

feel that there is no hope and that society has permanently rejected them. Even though they have completed their sentence, they are not allowed to rejoin society fully. The project needs ex-offenders to submit their details for an online database. Interested employers can review the database online and, if they see someone that they would like to interview, they submit a query. Nicro will then put the prospective employer in touch with the ex-offender. Nicro gives hope to ex-cons The National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (Nicro) has launched Giving Hope, an online project which seeks to give ex-offenders access to employment opportunities. Many ex-offenders struggle to find work because of their criminal records, which makes reintegrating into society and living a crimefree life very difficult. Many of them are ordinary people who have made serious mistakes and want a chance to move on. Most are also disadvantaged through lack of education, skills and opportunities. A criminal record simply adds to the social barriers in their way. Many of these offenders

General - Algemeen
Drakenstein Gazette
Star Star Signs Signs CAPRICORN
22 December to 21 January
Fight off negative tendencies by taking a more active interest in spiritual, religious, idealistic, and charitable activities. For some people, a wonderful antidote for these negative tendencies is helping others with the same problem. For example, you can help people with alcohol-related problems rather than drink alcohol yourself or help drug users rather than take drugs yourself!
AQUARIUS
21 January To 20 February
You are prone to be compulsive or demanding in a close relationship, to be emotionally driven and to force things to a head in some emotionally-laden situation. Positively, a relationship can be deepened and reborn now, given new life by your willingness to reveal yourself completely to your loved one.
PISCES
20 February to 21 March
Your physical drive and energy level are high now, and you can accomplish a great deal fairly easily. You are inclined to take the initiative or to strike out on your own, and you are likely to be successful at what you attempt at this time. Because you assert yourself in a positive manner, a leadership role or an opportunity to do something you have wanted to do on your own is likely to be offered to you.
ARIES
21 March to 21 April
Your desire for pleasure, ease, and affection is brought to the fore and may interfere with work or complicated situations in which you need to be acting assertively and on your own behalf. Your mood and attitude is conciliatory, and your need for love and approval heightened. Social gatherings and personal relationships are favored.
TAURUS
21 April to 21 May
This is a good time for relaxing recreation, a time to refresh and rejuvenate yourself and do the things you most enjoy doing. Good humor and optimism prevail now, and you are able to get a larger perspective on your life. This is also a good time to approach someone who is in a position to benefit you spiritually, intellectually, or materially.
GEMINI
21 May to 22 June
Emotional self-control and feelings of distance and aloneness characterize this time. You are coolly objective about your friends and loved ones and their shortcomings as friends or lovers. You are probably being a bit too critical and hard on them right now. This is also a time for belt-tightening and being very cautious about investments and expenditures. Going on a diet is favored now.
CANCER
22 June to 23 July
Conversations and sharing plans and ideas with others are very fruitful now. You understand what others are telling you, and you make yourself clearly understood also. This is a favorable time for getting your message across to others via writing, speaking, or advertising.
LEO
23 Julie to 24 August
Nervous tension, impatience, uneven or erratic rhythms, and/or a disruption of your usual pace can make this time very challenging. You are apt to deal with some recalcitrant people or become that way yourself. Beware of burning bridges behind you in your heightened impatience or restless intolerance of anything that thwarts you now.
VIRGO
24 August to 23 September
You are mentally restless and can not concentrate well on your immediate, familiar tasks. You are not inclined to discipline your mind or focus on practical matters, unless there is an element of gambling, play, or risk-taking involved. Reading something that is mind expanding, taking a trip, or planning a vacation is favored at this time.
LIBRA
23 September to 23 October
There is great depth to your conversations. You find yourself revealing secrets or very private matters, and also asking very penetrating questions of others. Superficial answers don't satisfy you now. This is an excellent time to investigate a complex problem or mystery, look for something that has been lost or hidden, and also to learn more about your own inner depths.
SCORPIO
23 October to 23 November
This is likely to be a time of considerable frustration and discouragement for you. You are unusually sensitive to criticism of your efforts and to the limitations and restraints that your responsibilities entail. Fighting with authority figures or lashing out at others who restrict you in any way is a strong possibility.
SAGITTARIUS
23 November to 22 December
Your personal magnetism is strong and you attract appreciation, affection, and attention at this time. Feelings of love, a desire for beauty, and the urge to be creative are strong. You beautify your surroundings and pay particular attention to your appearance. This is a good time to treat yourself or do something fun just for you. X1PDNA0H-GZ071114

Five tips to survive the holiday spending battleground Although the holiday and festive season is still a few months away, shopping centres are already starting to promote festive season spending. It is time to start planning for the silly season. Without a spending gameplan there could be consequences.
“Even though you might be relaxed during the holiday season, there is no worse time to let budgeting go out of the window. Knowing exactly what you are buying and for whom or why, should be the first step in holiday spending. We are not only fighting against store displays but also our inability to remain financially disciplined as well as the excitement that comes with this time of year,” says Eunice Sibiya, Head of FNB Consumer Education. Sibiya says that it is critical to carry the right ammunition when getting ready to enter the holiday spending battleground. ) Pay yourself first: Under no circumstances is the holiday season allowed to deter saving. When receiving a salary, make sure the same amount is put into a savings account as usual and do not forget to save a portion of the bonus too. “There is no denying that it is harder to save over this period particularly if you didn’t put money away throughout the rest for the year. That is why budgeting is key,” says Sibiya.

You the Entrepreneur: Remain teachable In his wisdom, Solomon advised his son not to be wise in his own eyes (Proverbs 3:7). If we put this in other words we can say that it is important to be “teachable.” Many business owners who took the big step to leave a salaried job and ventured out on their own are very independent people, but unfortunately not always teachable. Many entrepreneurs later realise that if they had listened to sound advice, they might have made less mistakes and might have been better off. One of the most common things that entrepreneurs later bemoan, is the fact that they waited too long before starting their own business. Looking at our growing unemployment rate, I believe that more people should, begin to think about how they can earn a living for themselves earlier rather than later. Entrepreneurs are usually opportunity driven. Whenever a new opportunity for making more money comes along, they will jump and seize the opportunity. Yet they seldom want to hear that it is similarly important to keep the admin of the new venture up to date from the start. “We can do that later on when we have time,” is a common mantra.
Due to their fear of losing a profitable opportunity, many entrepreneurs make hasty decisions. Good advice from experienced business owners is that patience is the mother of success and when selecting a partner, even more so. This is also important when looking for business premises. The cheapest or whatever is available, is seldom the best location. Also, the time of the year you start a new venture, is important. A friend of mine opened an extra branch for their business about three months ago. When I saw him last week and enquired about the new venture, he commented that they should have rather opened it early next year. But three months ago his mind was set on opening the new branch as soon as possible and nobody would have persuaded him otherwise. Be teachable, ask for and listen to good advice. It can save you a stack of money and perhaps even your business. * David Malherbe is a business and career consultant and lives in Wellington. BILTONG, MUSHROOM AND FETA PAP TERT Ingredients: Pap: • 750 ml (3 Cups) Warm Water • 2,5 ml (½ Tsp) Fine Salt • 15 ml (1tbsp) Butter • 250 ml (1 Cup) Maize Meal • 250 ml (1 Cup) Fresh Or Frozen Corn Kernels Filling: • 15 ml (1tbsp) Olive Oil
• ½ (75g) Red Onion, Diced • 250 g Mushrooms, Sliced • 5 ml (1tsp) Garlic, Crushed • 15 ml (1tbsp) Chives • 180 g (1 Cup) Sliced Biltong • 100 g (1 Cup) Feta, Crumbled • 250 ml (1 Cup) Cream • 125 ml (½ Cup) Gruyere Cheese, Grated • Fresh Basil, To Serve
Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. For the pap, place the water and salt in a pot and bring it up to a boil. Stir in the butter and then whisk in the pap. Turn the heat down, cover with a lid and cook it over very low heat for 15 minutes. Whisk twice during cooking to get rid of any lumps. Stir in the corn and cook for a further 5 minutes. For the filling, heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Gently sauté the onion for 5 minutes until tender. Turn up the heat and add in the mushrooms. Fry for 3-4 minutes and then add the garlic and fry for another minute. Stir in the chives and lightly season the mixture. To assemble the tert, place half of the pap at the bottom of a 15cm x 20cm ovenproof dish. Add the mushroom filling on top. Add a layer of biltong and then the crumbled feta. Pour over half of the cream and then the rest of the pap. Neaten the edges so that all of the filling is covered. Pour over the rest of the cream and then scatter the grated Gruyere on top. Bake for 15 minutes until the cheese is melted. Scatter some fresh basil on top and serve. X1PDNAD1-GZ071114
