Michael Hugo, konst. Luzuko Dlongwana, sers.Wella Wicks en konst. Adrian Adriaanse. Botsing met ’n dier?

COMPETITION RULES: Spend R200 or more at any store, write your name and telephone no. on the till slip and throw it in the box at the DJ’s table. The owner of the winning till slip will draw a voucher from another box. Lucky Draw starts at ten o’clock and every ½ hour thereafter. Till slips are only valid for one draw and the till slip with the biggest amount goes into the main draw. The winners of the main draw are the five people who spend the most money on one till slip for the 4 day period. Vouchers are not redeemable for cash. Vouchers expires 31 December 2014, except the doctors voucher. Winners must be present to claim their prizes. Only the five winners of the main prizes will be contacted via telephone beforehand. The competition is open to all customers, but no tenants and staff may enter.

Apply for an AIT bursary now People can take everything from you but not your education. This advice from his grandmother has always stayed in the mind of Franklin Sitzer who, at the age of 50, has completed his third year of studying towards a Bachelor of Divinity at Stellenbosch University (SU). Besides receiving a bursary from Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund (Aibprof), the board of directors unanimously voted for him as their merit award winner. Harwin Smith, an Aibprof founder member and deputy chairperson, explains that for the past 15 years the Athlone Institute Trust(AIT)’s Aibprof has been awarding students with bursaries or bursary loans. The AIT, a recipient of the prestigious Impumelelo Social Innovations Centre Award, has been operational since 1926 through the collective effort of members from five churches: Bethel United Congregational Church, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Immanuel UR Church, St Stephen’s Anglican Church and Zions UR Church. Clarence Carolissen, Aibprof’s chairperson, said they issued bursaries and bursary loans worth R520 000 this year to 63 students studying at various tertiary institutions in South Africa. Students in their second and subsequent years of study will be considered for bursaries based on academic merit and/or financial need. Awards are variable and cover a percentage of the cost of tuition, registration and books. Aibprof bursaries are not repayable and the fees are paid directly

Clarence Carolissen (left) congratulates Franklin Sitzer here on his merit award. to tertiary institutions. In 2015, a maximum of 20 bursary loans will be made available to first year students with strong motivation for financial need and who have obtained the acceptance to do a BA course. First year students who matriculated at Klein Nederburg Senior Secondary School in Paarl and who register for a qualification in AgriSciences at SU may also apply for the Erna Witbooi Bursary. Applicants must adhere to the following requirements: ) Be a permanent resident of Paarl or Mbekweni. ) A parish member in good standing of one of the member churches of the AIT OR a member in good standing of any bonafide denomination/religious institution in Paarl or

Mbekweni. ) Enrol for full-time undergraduate studies for the 2015 academic year, at a tertiary institution. The intended course has to be registered with the council on higher education (a list of registered tertiary institutions is available on the website). ) Have been promoted after the last year of study. ) Show potential to study successfully. ) Produce certified documents. ) Produce their registration paper. Thus students have to pay their registration fees at the beginning of the academic year, from their own resources. ) Be willing to be involved in some form of community service in the Paarl/Mbekweni area. ) Participate in the mentoring programme. Application forms and information for the bursaries and bursary loans are available at the offices of the member churches in Paarl, from the Aibprof website: www.athlonebursaries.co.za and from Drakenstein Pharmacy in Huguenot. Contact Harwin Smith at 021 862 7777 or athlonebursaries@gmail.com for further queries. The closing date for bursary or bursary loan applications is 13 February. Completed application forms, together with certified copies of all required documents must be posted to: The Secretary, Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund, P.O. Box 846, Huguenot, 7646. Late or incomplete applications will be not be considered.

The Mbekweni Police are looking for two men who robbed two security guards on duty at the Shoprite centre. Mbekweni Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nceba Vanqa, says according to information received, the two men – one of who was dressed in a police vest and carrying a firearm – gained access to the premises at about 04:00 on 27 November by jumping over a fence. They then entered the security guards’ office and pointed a firearm at the two guards, ordering them to lie down on the ground. They took the guards’ jackets and keys to the main gate of the shopping centre and fled the scene. No shots were fired. The guards were unable to give a description of the suspects. The police are investigating a case of robbery with a firearm. Anyone with information is requested to contact the Mbekweni Detectives at 021 868 9900.

Star Star Signs Signs CAPRICORN

22 December to 21 January

Meeting people that can benefit your career, getting together with colleagues, or getting to know your superiors on a more personal, friendly basis is quite likely at this time. Take advantage of all opportunities to socialize with the people you have professional ties with for the outcome is likely to be quite positive.

AQUARIUS

21 January To 20 February

A furious battle of wills is quite possible, for you are fired up, impatient, aggressive, and inclined to put your own interests and desires ahead of anything else. You may also have to stand up for your rights against some fierce competitor. Also, you can't sit still right now and hasty, abrupt, impulsive action may result in accidents.

PISCES

You the Entrepreneur: Where are the jobs? DAVID MALHERBE After 12 years of school, young people are usually bright-eyed about the future, but round about this time of the year, newspapers will tell you how little chance you have of landing a job. This is nothing new though. I’ve read about that since I left school. Please do not lend your ears to noisy negatives. It is not the newspaper that will define your future. It is in your own hands. Believe in yourself. You can make it. You need to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize. It is all in the state of the mind. The way we think about something deter-

21 March to 21 April

21 April to 21 May

Your personal charm and attractiveness has a positive effect on your career, reputation, or public image. People see you as a loving and lovable person and as someone who is aware of their needs and feelings, which can benefit you at this time. Others are willing to help and cooperate with your aims.

GEMINI

21 May to 22 June

You are fascinated by the mysterious now. Unsolved or puzzling problems and the hidden or behind the scenes aspects of a situation interest you most, and you delve and probe until you discover the truth. An interest in psychology or other peoples' secrets comes to the fore. You enjoy spy, mystery, and supernatural stories.

CANCER

22 June to 23 July

For now, your energy needs to go into your personal life, home, and family matters. Stress which has been building up both at work and in your family relationships needs to be released now. Try to work out or find ways to express yourself physically, like working in the yard or playing sports; otherwise, you are prone to becoming pugnacious with the people you are closest to.

LEO

23 Julie to 24 August

Misunderstandings with a friend or someone you are usually in harmony with are likely to arise now, especially if you feel you are being taken for granted. You are more acutely aware of differences in style, taste, or values. You will want your personal preferences to be appreciated and taken into account.

VIRGO

24 August to 23 September

You will want a break from the predictability of your usual routine and methods. You're in the mood to experiment and to learn something new. Offbeat or original ideas excite you and you will seek people who can offer you a different way of looking at things. Discovery, inventiveness, and spontaneity are major themes now.

LIBRA

23 September to 23 October

At this time you have important discussions with people you are (or once were) very close to. You may wish to visit, write, or make a telephone call to someone from your past. Connecting with your roots is the theme now, with an emphasis on seeing the past objectively. Memories and old feelings surface very clearly now.

SCORPIO

23 October to 23 November

You experience sudden insights, make discoveries, come up with fresh solutions to old problems, and seek alternatives to the usual routine way of doing things. Your mental processes are speeded up and you move more quickly now. Try to make room for a lot of spontaneity and flexibility in your schedule at this time.

SAGITTARIUS

“make” your own job. Many people who today have those “bright futures” that we dreamt of when I was at school, are those who ventured out on their own. Most probably they started on a small scale, experienced hardships; some might even at some stage have lost everything, but got up and started anew. They knew their destiny was in their own hands and they just kept going. And today they reap the benefits. The best time to start out on your own is while you are still living at home. And believe me, you can. God gave you a spirit to conquer adversity. * David Malherbe is a business and career consultant and lives in Wellington. mines our attitude and therefore our actions and future. Zig Ziglar says most of us suffer from “stinken thinken.” We believe that we can only have a “bright future” when we can land a job with a stable income at some big company. If not, we tend to blame the system, the school or whatever. We think that adversity in any form is bad. But it isn’t. Peter Curruthers in Petes Weekly says that adversity is not the opposite of a bright future. Adversity is fertile soil in which a bright future blooms. Think about it. What life skills do we learn if we walk into the first job we apply for? Ten rejections teach us more than the five years we spent at high school. If you cannot “find” a job, perhaps you can

20 February to 21 March

This is a good time to assert your own needs and desires, to communicate to others what you really want. You are sharp, clear, decisive, and articulate. You can't stand being idle now; you are ready for challenging, intellectual activities and attacking difficult problems on the job.

23 November to 22 December

You know just what you want right now and woe to anyone or anything that gets in your way! You are much more likely to become domineering, pushy, or inconsiderate of others now, so it is a good time for you to do what you need to do by yourself rather than with others. THIS WEEK’S EXPECTED WEATHER TEMPERATURES FRIDAY 05/12

CHRISTMAS CAKE Ingredients: • 500 g Mixed Dried Fruit (cake Mix) • 100 g Glace Cherries, Halved • 50 g Mixed Peel • 50 g Flaked Almonds • 250 g Brown Sugar • 250 g Butter, Softened • 4 Eggs • 160 g Flour

• 1/2 Tsp Mixed Spice • 1/2 Tsp Nutmeg • 1 Tsp Baking Powder • 1/2 Tsp Cinnamon • 1/3 Cup Brandy • Extra Brandy For Dousing • 250 g Marzipan (optional) • 250 g Plastic Icing (optional)

Method: Preheat oven to 140°C. Grease a 20cm round cake tin and line the bottom and sides with baking parchment. Place the cake mix, cherries, mixed peel and almonds in a bowl and dust with a 2 tbsp of the flour. Cream together the sugar and butter until pale in colour. Beat in the eggs, one at a time until mixture is light and fluffy. Sift together the flour, mixed spice, nutmeg, baking powder and cinnamon and fold into the wet ingredients together with the dried fruit and 90ml brandy. Pour batter into the lined baking tin, and using a spoon make a slight dent in the middle. Cover cake with foil. Place a Bain-Marie on the bottom shelf of the oven and place the cake on a wire rack directly on top. (This prevents the cake from drying out). Bake in oven for 3 ½ hours or until a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. Remove from oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Pour 3 tbsp of brandy over the cooled cake and store wrapped in foil in an airtight container. Douse cake with a few extra tablespoons of brandy every week until ready to decorate. Cover cake with marzipan and plastic icing if desired. X1PHT0QD-GZ051214
