Taking action against speedsters >> Councillor spearheads petition regarding Umhlanga Rocks Drive hotspot DEBI BLAKE

T Shontel Asbury (DA whip for the Community and Emergency Committee) and Heinz de Boer (coun cillor for ward 35) at the Utshani Close Tjunction (just one of the hot spots on Umhlanga Rocks Drive). PHOTO: DEBI BLAKE

HE recent spate of serious accidents on Umhlanga Rocks Drive some fatal - has prompted the circulation of a petition in order to get action from eThekwini Municipality. As many as 20 accidents have been noted in the area in the past seven years. Heinz de Boer - councillor forward35,andspearheading the petition - told Fever that he sent a letter “some three weeks ago” to the City Manager requesting that speed-calming measures be introduced on the road. The area in question is “the section of road between Sunningdale (Village Way) and Somerset Park (Keynsham Drive). Recent years have seen several deaths and many accidents being recorded on this stretch, with many taking place on the bend just after Utshani Close intersection (going north),” De Boer said.

The councillor recently held an on-site inspection on Umhlanga Rocks Drive between concerned stakeholders. “I met with members of the bodycorporatesofthethreedevelopments off Utshani Close, an engineer from eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) and other concerned residents to discusspossiblesolutionstothe issue. “Speed traps need to be placed on Umhlanga Rocks DriveaswellasotherslikeArmstrong Avenue, Addison Drive, Kensington Drive and William Campbell Avenue,” De Boer said. “There have been far too many fatalities and serious accidents on these suburban roads. “We want an engineering solution to the problem and will not settle for less. Umhlanga Rocks Drive needs to be narrowed as this type of measure does cause motorists to decrease speed. Traffic lights

and/or speed humps need to be installed as well.” Councillor De Boer added that “Metro Police also needs to come to the party. More roadblocks and booze buses need to be in place on weekends. They have been completely remiss in enforcing the rules of the road adequately.” De Boer said that he has “already written to the City Manager to ask for an investigation and audit into the speed timing unit, with the aim of getting some action from Metro. “Law enforcement needs to place speed cameras on Umhlanga Rocks Drive as well as Addison, Armstrong and Newport Avenues.” De Boer has now drawn up a petition - asking for more money for speed humps and improved speed-calming measures on these roads - specifically Umhlanga Rocks Drive.

Water as a nutrient

WHENmostpeoplethinkoftheword “nutrients” they usually think in terms of proteins, fats, sugars, vitamins – but not water. In fact, water is the most essential nutrient. An animalcansurviveweekswithoutfood, but only days without water. Elderly or sick animals may not

even survive a day or two without water – it can certainly precipitate a major crisis (for example, cats with kidney disease can NEVER be without water, or animals on heart medication). Water has NO calories and does not supply energy – so “putting an animal on drip” does NOT equal calories–soaproperlyhydratedanimal

can still “starve” and lose muscle (and organ) mass. Many vets put vitamins into drips – it is debatable whether this is of any value, except intherarecaseof(documented)vitamin deficiencies. But drips are a matter for a later article. Water is necessary for digestion, to support circulation, toxin and nutrient metabolism and excretion,

andforimmunity(drymucousmembranes are easier portals for pathogen entry). All pets should have their water bowls cleaned and refilled at least daily. A cat on kibbles needs about 200-250 ml water per day, and a dog about 50 – 100 ml/kg/day (i.e. 2 – 5 L for a great Dane). Steel bowls are more hygienic.

Umhlanga food and music festival AFTER a hugely successful first event, the second Umhlanga Food and Music Festival returns to the Chris Saunders Park on Saturday, 1 November. The festival promises a day filled with great food and even better music. South Africa’s finest craft beers and wines will be on sale, accompanied by a wide range of tantalising food stalls. The Kickstands, Ruby Gil l and

Majozi will get the festival warmed up, before Gangs Of Ballet take centre stage and brings you some of the best sounds the country has to offer. This event caters for the whole family, with children under eight getting in for free. Tickets are available at Computicket in advance, at R100, or R120 on the day at the event at the door. The event starts at 12 noon and ends at 8pm.

He told Fever, “The municipality has removed the loose glass and aluminium on the top floor. “A porta-cabin has also been placed at the site for the lifeguards andtheirequipment,[untilthelifeguard building is replaced], to serve the Tidal pool. “I have not yet seen an allocation or vote for the new building,” Pullan added. The councillor said that he hoped the new lifeguard building would be rebuilt soon as the two beaches at Umdloti are still under pilot status for Blue Flag accreditation.

There was alarm that loose glass and aluminium window frames on the top floor would injure passersby if they fell to the ground. The recent gale-force winds has exacerbated the situation. Celebrating 40 with flowers forever >> Nasturtiums may be the bloom for a fortieth anniversary but this florist has flowers in abundance DEBI BLAKE

C

ELEBRATING 40 years in any business is an achievement. John Porteous - proprietor of Elizabeth’s Florist in La Lucia Mall - is the only original tenant still trading since the opening of the shopping centre 40 years ago. “Icanrememberchoosingmyspot on the corner before the roof was put on,” John told Fever. Other extensions (and the lifts) were all added years later. “When the mall was first built there was only sugar cane north of Shelbourne Avenue.” The florist’s roots extend further back than 1974, as John’s mother (Elizabeth - the shop’s namesake) used to own a florist “close to the corner of Kensington Drive and Broadway - originally called Durban North Garden Centre - some 60 years ago in the early Fifties.” Growing up around flowers (John is a Northwood Old Boy) - and after

studying to be a teacher and a stint with a retail company - John and his wife Jenni then opened Elizabeth’s Florist at the mall. They still have some customers who used to order flowers from his mom. Apart from the locals they have made up stunning flower arrangements for visiting VIP’s such as Janet Jackson, Kim Basinger and Victoria and David Beckham! “It had to be an all-white arrangement for Victoria’s birthday,” John remembers. John’s daughter, Tarryn, is now her father’s right-hand. Just prior to her birth, La Lucia Mall was the first shopping centre in South Africa to be allowed to trade on a Sunday - in 1979.

Taryn Futter, her father John Porteous and shop as sistant Connie Cisibi are the familiar faces behind Eliza beth’s Florist at La Lucia Mall.

Tarryn was born on Mother’s Day in 1980 - one of the busiest days on any florist’s calendar apart from Valentine’s Day - “I had to run between the hospital and the shop on the Sunday and then put up a large sign in the window announcing “It’s a Girl!” John said. Technology and improved transportation has helped during strikes and - a florist’s main bugbear - the weather! “At least now there are alternative options during supply problems as we can source flowers from another region if they cannot be obtained locally,” John said.

A challenge to men I DO talks at schools, encouraging teens to make the right choices in life when it comes to choosing friends, smoking, drugs, alcoholabuse, bullyingandpornogra phy. When it comes to pornography, our children have access to the internet on their cell phones, or friend’s cell phone, as well as the traditional magazines, strip

pers, and DVD’s. In my talks I stress how easy it is to become a porn addict, and how degrading it is to women, to be seen purely as a sexual being. By indulging in porn, one is supporting the industry, and in most cases, making immoral people wealthy, at the expense of the dignity and respect of women. Most men, driven by testosterone, have a weak ness for the trap of pornography, and unfortunately,

porn is made light of at times, and not seen for the dangerous addiction it is. When our children learn that their parents in dulge in pornography, it makes the practice almost acceptable, or at least, “not THAT bad?” “After all, if my parent(s) watch porn, how bad can it really be; just harmless fun, surely?” Here is a challenge to all those who might relate to this letter... Let’s set the example to our children, and make our homes “porn free”, as much as we possibly can? Let us throw the “trash” into the trash, where noone else can access it. And if it’s appropriate, do it with your teenager’s company/buy in. Let them know that your household does not be lieve in degrading women, but believe that women need to be seen as God’s creation, deserving of re spect, not just a physical body for a man’s pleasure.

Doctor sets recovery time for Schumacher

>> Police reports car had been ordered for a Durban business tycoon

Injured former F1 driver Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and predicted a possible recovery within three years. A DOCTOR who treated Michael Schu macher for nearly six months after the Formula 1 champion struck his head in a skiing fall says the injured exdriver is no longer in a coma and predicted a possible recovery within three years. JeanFrancois Payen, a doctor at the Grenoble hospital that treated Schumacher after his injury in Decem ber 2013, said he has visited the Schu macher family at home in Switzerland to track his patient’s progress. Schumacher was with his 14year old son in the French Alps when he fell, hitting the side of his head on a rock and cracking his helmet. “Life after a head injury is punctuat ed by stages. We hope, but we have to give him time,” said Payen last Thurs day. He predicted a convalescence of one to three years. Earlier French F1 commentator JeanLouis Moncet repeated a report that Schumacher was “waking up very slowly” from the induced coma con trolling his serious brain injuries. Moncet said: “I saw his son and he told me Schumi was waking up very slowly, very slowly.” Payen commented: “It is to see how he progresses and then tell his wife and his children what changes I have ob served. He is in very favourable condi tions. In September 2014 Schumacher left a rehabilitation clinic in Switzer land and returned home to his estate on the edge of Lake Geneva. — Wheels24.

A man, who allegedly stole Schumacher’s medical records and who was allegedly at tempting to sell them to dif ferent media for $67 000 (about R7 350 000), worked as an executive at a Swiss helicopter air rescue company, which organised the German sportsman’s transport from a French hospital to Switzerland in June. The man, arrested and in terrogated by police, had de nied any wrongdoing. He was being detained in a Zurich po lice holding cell, but was found hanged when officers took him breakfast before a scheduled hearing before a judge.

MCLAREN 650S, worth over R5 mil lion and one of only a handful in the world, was stolen in a cargo heist shortly after arriving at Durban Harbour on Monday 20 October, reports The Witness. It is understood that the sports car ar

rived at the Durban Harbour on Monday and once cleared through customs had been placed in an unmarked container bound for Johannesburg. Law enforcement reports that the the heavy goods truck carrying the McLaren was

hijacked in Warden near the KZNFree State border. The driver had been thrown out by criminals at Hartebeespoort although was unharmed in the robbery. Police reports that the car had been or dered for a Durban business tycoon, who had bought the performance vehicle through his company. The businessman de nied this and insisted his company had not purchased the sports car. Imperial Logistics marketing executive Michelle Neilson confirmed that a truck was hijacked on the N3 with a container contain ing laptops and the McLaren 650 S. Neilson said a case was opened at Eras mia police station near Pretoria and that an Imperial Investigations task team was as signed to the case. “No further information can be disclosed at this stage due to the highly sensitive nature of the ongoing inves tigation,” Neilson said. Daytona Motor Group CEO Justin Divaris said the car was bound for its showroom in Sandton. “I firmly believe that whoever stole the truck had no idea what they had taken. There is obviously no market for a car like that in SA.” He also denied that the Dur ban business mogul had bought the car, and said they looked forward to getting their car back. — Jeff Wicks.
