It is estimated that more than 24 million people around the world are HIV positive. In order to create awareness of the AIDS pandemic, World AIDS Day was launched in 1988. World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people to show support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz says the consequences of risky sexual behaviour and the deaths from the HIV/AIDS pandemic have affected the most vulnerable segments of society, specifically children. He says an indication of the vulnerability of children is the finding of Census 2011 that 19 645 South African children are reported to have lost both their mother and father, many of them have died from AIDS-related illnesses. But many believe the tide is turning in the fight against AIDS. City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Health, councillor Benedicta Van Minnen, says HIV testing in Cape Town is at an all-time high, as reported by City Health, with nearly 200 000 tests over a three-month period earlier this year. “We need to encourage more men to get tested, especially since unprotected sex remains a very real concern in the South African context. If you do not get tested, you don’t know your status and you cannot access lifesaving treatment,” says councillor Van Minnen.

This group of young people from Teen Life Youth Ministries held a Street Store for the homeless in the Helderberg area on 8 November. They were greeted with smiles and tears of joy.

Homeless shop for clothes and shoes

A local group of teenagers held a Street Store for the Helderberg’s homeless people on 8 November.

The members of Teen Life Youth Ministries were met with smiles and tears of joy. The community donated clothes to the cause, giving the homeless a rare opportunity to “shop”. The Street Store concept was created by Max Pazak and Kayli Levitan from Cape Town, where clothes are literally hung out in the street, turning it into an outside shopping area. The difference is that the patrons do not need any currency to retrieve selected items. The Street Store is aimed solely at homeless people and affords them

the experience of being able to peruse through items of clothing and shoes before deciding which are to their liking and what they will be choosing for themselves. So many clothes were donated for the Helderberg event that the ± 50 homeless people could not take all the clothing with them. Teen Life’s director, Dezi Rampton, says: “It was a great success and I hope to see the Street Store grow, as it offers hope’’. Dezi plans to have more of these pop-up stores, but is not sure as to when the next Street Store will be. Community members wanting to donate to the cause can contact Life Church at 021 855 2329.

Manager of the Animal Welfare Society, Julia Evans, addressed the audience about the challenges of capturing and housing stray cats and dogs. The Animal Welfare Society takes in about 3 000 stray cats and dogs per year, they are cleaned, fed and given veterinary treatment where needed and homes are found for as many as possible. Only two veterinarians are employed by the Society and they serve the whole Helderberg region. Sadly many of these animals have to be euthanised. The Local Network Of Care aims to reintegrate homeless people back into society. Some of these people have been living on the street for up to eight years and the reintegration is a long and daunting process. Drugs, cheap alcohol, and the difficulty to find accommodation hamper

The University of the Third Age (U3A) held their open day on 19 November in the Strand town hall. Peter Ford (current affairs and media) and Tony Searle (chairperson) enjoyed the event. The U3A is for retired individuals who like to keep busy and would like to learn more. They have various clubs and programmes for people with all sorts of interests, they also go on regular outings to the theatre and other excursions. For more information or if you would like to enrol at U3A contact Tony Searle on 021 856 2233. PHOTO: TAMSYN JANTJIES the LNOC’s abilities to help the homeless. The Helderberg Hospice Foundation was represented by Patricia McNaught-Davis and she spoke about the extended range of care and support services for the terminally ill that they provide. Volunteer assistants make frequent comforting and

counselling visits to the terminally ill and their families. These organisations all spoke about how difficult it gets to render these services as they struggle financially and with resources. For the audience it was humbling to learn what is done, how great the need is and how grateful the recipients are.

Skep ’n asemrowende Kersfeestafel

Team Shrek is ready for next year’s Cansa’s Relay for Life. They have already had several fundraisers in aid of Cansa this year.

Relay for Life 2015

The annual Cansa Relay For Life Helderberg will be held on the weekend of 7 and 8 February at the Hottentots Holland High School. Teams of 10 – 15 people will be walking the track throughout the night in commemoration of those who have lost the battle against cancer and also to celebrate the lives of those affected by the disease. The programme will be filled with entertainment and games and there will be various food stalls. At the Relay for Life earlier this year, the Daniels family were the top contributors and donated more than R10 000 to Cansa. The family’s journey with Cansa started in 2012 when

two of their family members were diagnosed with lung and prostate cancer respectively. After the passing of an uncle last year, the family was even more determined to make a difference and raise awareness about the disease and Roxanne Daniels of Somerset West contacted Cansa on their behalf. They have since held four fundraisers for the Cansa Relay for Life for 2015. Clark Pools and Dstv-R-us also joined forces as Team Shrek and have had four fundraisers since the beginning of the year. They also started Movember, in support of prostate cancer, with a boot sale.
