The family of the late John Jacobs (39) is asked to contact the Macassar Police. They are also looking for Mr Mtoto and Luthando Nomegange who can help with an investigation. Phone Detective Warrant Officer Hennie Swarts on 021 857 7108.

Report cards not allowed to be denied
Some of Cotlands’ children performed Lean on Me at the World Aids Day event in Macassar.
World Aids Day event
World Aids Day was commemorated in Macassar on Monday 1 December.
Children from Cotlands eagerly participated in the event with song and dance items at the Old Civic Centre.
Western Cape Minister of Education, Debbie Schäffer has announced that no report cards will be withheld at the end of this school year. She says schools are no longer allowed to withhold the report card of students whose school fees have not been paid up to date. Schäffer says that schools are not allowed to withhold report cards for any reason whatsoever. All parents are urged to report such a practice to their nearest district office should this be happening at their child’s school. She urges all principals to release all leaners’ report cards on the date specified. If any complaints of this matter should be reported to the department, the school in question will be investigated and further actions will be taken as required.
Parents who are in the position to settle their children’s school fees should do so. Schäffer reminds parents though that schools can take legal action against parents who owe fees and do not qualify for exemption or partial exemption. School fees are an important source of additional income in public schools and the Student Governing Body is allowed to take legal steps to recover those fees. Parents can, however, qualify for exemption if the school fees are more than 10% of the parents combined annual salary. Schäffer says, ‘‘regardless of the parents financial position the principals cannot discriminate against our learners’’. There are processes in place for parents who cannot afford to pay the school fees.
HIV testing and counselling, and TB testing as well as family planning, diabetes testing and dental screening were some of the free services offered by Cotlands, in partnership with City of Cape Town and Multi Sectional Action Team (MSAT) organisations.
Anita Jooste, social crime coordinator for the Macassar Police and station commander Lt-Col Sindile Mbese talking to the children and guests at the World Aids Day event.
Can you help find parents? The Department of Social Development in Somerset West needs the public’s help to locate the parents of two children aged nine and four. They are looking for the biological mother, Wilma Catharina Diergaardt and father, Waven Wood. The children are currently in the care of the maternal aunt, Riana Swartz of Greenfields. The last-known address of the parents is 32248 Phaliso Street, Greenfields, Strand. Call social worker Lucille Keith during office hours on 021 840 3500/3531.

The Helderberg Street People’s Centre (HSPC) will be hosting Christmas lunch for poor and homeless members of the community on Christmas Day. The centre will be open throughout the festive season to provide food, clothing, support and practical help to the needy. These may be delivered to the soup kitchen at 9 Victoria Street (opposite Somerset West Library), between 08:30 and 13:00, from now until Christmas Eve. Readers will also be aware that the HSPC has been given notice to vacate its premises (probably in March 2015), in order to make way for a transport hub that is being created by the City of Cape Town. The centre is actively looking at options to continue its work of feeding some 250 people in Somerset West and 750 people in the

The HSPC believes that it undertakes necessary work within the community and looks forward to receiving continued support from the churches, residents and business community of the Helderberg.
Big Birthday Bash for Cancer Trust The Somerset 1 Facebook group invite you to their Big Birthday Bash on 13 December. The party aims to celebrate a year of charitable projects and activism and doubles up as a fund-raising event for the Little Cancer Fighters. The event will kick off with a truck convoy conducted by the Western Cape Trucking association. The trucks will be meeting at N2 Engen Garage and the drive in convoy into the Somerset West CBD. The truck drivers have offered to give kids with cancer or any kids going through a difficult time a lift in this spectacular convoy. They will be handing over the toys for the Little Cancer Fighters followed by a lunch at Nameless Pub, where they are expected to arrive from about 15:00. At 21:00 the Somerset 1 Big Birthday Bash starts and promises an evening packed with top entertainment. The line up of entertainment includes fire dancing, live bands, Wild Lettuce and a surprise yet to be announced. Top DJs including DJ Squeek, one of Cape Town’s top retro DJs, and Adri Norton will add some magic to the event. The theme is “Party Like a Rock Star”. VIP tickets are R150 per person, which will allow guests to sit with the stars and will also include VIP parking. Standard tickets are R30 each and are available at the door on the night. kursus ’n inkomste kan genereer.

Have a Heart assists children after school CASSY VAN EEDEN
Each day after school about 50 children from Garden Village are given a meal, a bath, education and counselling. This aftercare project is run by the Have a Heart organisation, which was established about two years ago by three local women. Jasmine Klink, one of the facilitators, says they recognised that
as a result of unemployment and poverty, many Garden Village children were not being fed or bathed every day, and so the organisation started. Klink, Amber de Wet (the founder) and Kathy Lucas worked together to raise enough funds and secure a premises for the programme to take place. Klink managed to get permission from the City of Cape Town to use the Garden Village Commu-
nity Hall in Gum Street. The children are fed a balancednutritious meal and receive education and even get counselling if the facilitators suspect that they are being abused. Two local churches have recently become involved with the organisation to uplift the group as much as possible. Hillsong Church recently gave
the hall a make-over, including new curtains, and members of the
Dutch Reformed Church have run clothing drives and planted a gar-
den to benefit the children. Have a Heart’s next endeavour is to plant a sustainable vegetable garden to benefit the children and the community. Klink says many of the children are not able to attend school as they do not have uniforms, books or stationary. If anyone is able to provide Have a Heart with assistance please contact Jasmine Klink on 084 974 4968 or 021 852 0037.

Cash is not always king for business owners over the festive season For robbers, the festive season is indeed the time to be jolly. Like us, criminals love the festive season. “Unfortunately it’s our retail sector that suffers the most,” says Richard Phillips, joint CEO of Cash Connect Management Solutions. Cash Connect Management Solutions offers an end-to-end cash management solution that encompasses cash in transit logistics, security management and cash processing.
Business owners need to understand the police and security companies can only do so much. Many business owners still use traditional or manual cash management solutions. South African business owners need to rethink the ways they manage and safeguard their cash. They are making themselves vulnerable simply because they don’t employ safer cash management solutions.
With more than 90% of business robberies taking place with insider participation, businesses and retail stores are easy targets. “With the latest technological advances, cash handling for businesses over the festive season no longer needs to be dangerous. Acting as the middle man, we now have cash management solutions that remove the risk and facilitate fast, efficient settlement directly into the bank account and minimising the opportuni-
ty for external or internal theft. It’s up to business owners to take advantage of this technology,” says Phillips. He suggests the following: . Make use of electronic transfers to avoid paying wages in cash to your staff. . Avoid broadcasting when cash will manually be taken to the bank for deposit. . Alternate the days and times when you deposit cash.
. Do not openly display the money you are depositing while you are standing at an ATM or in a bank queue. . Avoid carrying money bags or briefcases when approaching an ATM or when standing in a bank queue. . Alternate between bank branches or ATMs so your banking pattern is not easily recognisable. . Refrain from driving to the bank in your company-branded vehicle.

Local Facebook group provides central point for donations The idea was started by the Helderberg Community Facebook group where members identified the issue that residents often have so much they would like to donate but do not know which non-profit organisation or charity to give to. The organisers of Chariots of Charity have also found that one charity may be overwhelmed with donations for short periods of time while others go without. “We realised more and more that we need to create a platform or a vehicle where members of our community can plug into existing initiatives and support those already working in the field to do what they do to the best of their abilities,” says Isabel Tarling, spokesperson for Chariots for Charity.
The Chariots for Charity Day will be held at the Southey’s Vines grounds on Saturday 13 December. Donations of clothing, childrens’ car and booster seats, toys, stationery, cleaning products, pet food and other paraphernalia can be dropped off between 10:00 to 16:00. These donations will be distributed to Masikhule, the Rescue Animal Drive (RAD), Ukukhanya, Single Parents Helping Hands, the Somerset West Night Shelter, Patch, ACVV Bright Lights, Little Angels and Lost and Found Pets. This charity drive was initiated by Chariots for Charity, a local organisation formed to ensure a more effective distribution of donations.
“While people some may want to support babies, others mighty want to help children from single parent homes to go to school dignified, clean and with the necessary books or may want to help abandoned pets. “Thus we wanted to support the broadest range of NGOs and charities possible and create a space where everyone in the community can give to their favourite cause in one central location,” she says. Nino Messina, known as Helderberg’s braai master, will have a fire going where members of the Helderberg Community Facebook group can enjoy a braai together. For further information contact Isabel Tarling at isabel@tarling.co.za or phone 082 602 4543.

Touch rugby team aims for the stars The Drifters touch rugby team of Macassar with their medals after winning Division 1 in the In2Touch Spring league in Brackenfell, are (back from left) Fernando de Vos, Keith Janse, Davian Sauls, Kenneth Scheffers and Morné Meyer. In front are Luké Lewies, Husim Hanekom, Justin Eyman, Duran Goliath and Dustin Dick.
The Drifters touch rugby team based in Macassar have come a long way since the team’s very humble beginnings in 2010. The team, whose players are from theMacassararea, firstenteredtheAll Gold Hot Summer of Touch beach touch rugby tour in December 2010. They fared fairly well and made it through to the Open final at Muizenberg in 2010. They did not enter the tournament in 2011, but did so again in 2012 when more players joined the team. Dustin Dick, team manager/captain, said the players ages range from 14 to 25. “I’ve been involved with touch rugby for about 10 years and see it as a great way to keep the youth off the street, teach them discipline and for them to see other beach destinations.” He said they try to create an environment in the team where everyone
is made to feel welcome and part of this touchies family. Last year the team entered the In2Touch Spring league in Brackenfell and won Division 1, which they won again this year. “In 2013 we entered the All Gold Hot Summer of Touch beach touch rugby

team made it to the semi-final of the Struisbaai tournament, which shows the growth and potential of the young, up-and-coming players.” Dustin said the team has now been given the opportunity to play in the Pro Division of the All Gold Hot Summer of Touch 2014 beach touch rugby tour, which consists of the top-eight beach touch rugby teams in the Western Cape. “We feel privileged to have been afforded the opportunity to play in the Pro Division and have worked very hard, both on and off the field to get to this point. We will continue to give our best, but the beach tour is costly and we do not have any sponsors for our teams, so because of our financial situation will really battle to play in the Pro Division.” Dickson appealed to companies or individuals willing to assist the team to call him on 072 696 0200 or email him at dustindick10@gmail.com
tournament. The tour took place on various beaches such as Camps Bay, Strand, Onrus, Struisbaai, Stilbaai and Mossel Bay. “We won the Struisbaai Open tournament and made it to the Open finals at Camps Bay and Stilbaai and the semi-finals in Strand. Our second
World-class athlete Geraldine Pillay, who grew up in Macassar, is holding a fun walk and a pram walk on 16 December. Winners can win up to R 1 000 in prize money. The walk is 5 km and the pram walk 2 km. All are welcome to participate and registration will take place on the Macassar sports field from 06:00 to 07:45 and there is no entry fee. The walk will start promptly at 08:00. “My aim is to encourage families to be more active and get involved in sporting activities such as running as a family,” she says. There is a special prize of R 1 000 for the first family of three members to cross the finish line. Info: Arthur Moses on 079 824 1285 or 021 370 1242.
