The 50th annual Festival of Lights was held in Somerset West last Thursday. Crowds were treated to a procession of drum majorettes, the Hottentots Holland brass band and Santa Claus riding on a donkey cart. The hightlight of the evening was the official 2012 switching-on of the Christmas lights adorning lamp posts along Main Road by Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille. All photos by Nicole McCain.

“In vyf jaar sien ek myself as ’n suksesvolle besigheidsvrou . . . Protest against renting homes NICOLE MCCAIN Lourensia Park residents are signing a petition to express their unhappiness with homeowners who are renting out their houses. A group of disgruntled residents gathered in protest last week Monday. Joyce Mzamo, chairperson of the beneficiary committee at Lourensia Park, said the community gathered to protest against a homeowner who allegedly owns a house in Strand and is renting out her Lourensia Park home. “Why did someone apply for a house if they already have one?” asked one of the protesters, who requested to remain anonymous. “We moved in a year ago, and the house has stood empty this whole time. These people don’t need houses, and there are so many people who do need homes.” Residents protested in September over another home that has been let. Bruce Oom, spokesperson for Bonginkosi Madikizela, the Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements, said: “When people are considered for houses, we try and make sure that they are the people who most need houses.” Applications are run through the Housing Subsidy System, a nationally linked system which verifies whether or not the applicant has ever owned

a property, currently owns a property or has previously received a subsidy. “If they register positive on any of the above, they are not eligible for a subsidy.” However, he said a beneficiary could unofficially own a property not registered in their name, or for which they have not received a subsidy. What’s the value of festivities? NICOLE MCCAIN

Step into new shoes NICOLE MCCAIN

With the festive season upon us, Helderberg residents will be spending more on gifts and holidays. The Gazette spoke to readers about what they splash out on during the silly season.

Lwandle and Nomzamo pupils will step into the new year with a new pair of shoes, thanks to the Step Out Project.

Thomas Mehlomakulu of Nomzamo saves up in anticipation of festive season spending. “I put away money every month, but only spend around R500 more than usual. I buy clothes and gifts for my family, but don’t go away or throw parties.”

Beaulah Mativenga from Strand says her festive spending is tied to how well her business does. “I have my own business, and this year it is a little slow. I always spend more in December, on food and clothes. You have to spoil yourself.”

Charles Krunn of Strand says he prepares for the festive season. “I save up right through the year. I spend money on food and gifts, but I never go away on holiday.” PHOTOS: NICOLE MCCAIN

“I spend much more money in December,” says Gibson Masara. “But I earn it from my work making beaded decorations. People request orders closer to Christmas. I spend the money on family, buying things for Christmas, and stocking up on books for school in January.”

‘Arson’: families left homeless NICOLE MCCAIN The almost 40 people displaced in a fire in Pholile Park have started to rebuild their homes, but they have little justice to comfort them. Almost 20 informal homes were turned to ashes in the fire that broke out on Saturday 1 December at about 23:38. Lwandle police spokesperson, Constable Mthokozisi Gama, said a man set his girlfriend’s home alight after they had an argument. He then fled the scene, and the fire quickly spread to the neighbouring houses. Pholile Park resident Siphiwe Mfadu, said he was asleep in his home, along with his wife and two children, aged 9 and 12, at the time. Who gives Department of Labour the right to enter my home? My letter is in response to the article titled “Domestic workers to get wage increases” published in the Helderberg Gazette of 27 November. I have some problems with the spot inspections of the labour department. Do they assume the power to inspect my house? In a democratic society such powers are granted only to the police on probable cause, and to the law courts to order such inspection. If the department, however, would concentrate on their mathematics principles under-

lying the released figures first, the learning process would come to embrace the Constitution eventually. In the meantime, the department is forbidden to do such spot (house) inspections. This might fall under “breaking and entering”!

RICHARD UNGER

Page Boikanyo, spokesperson for the Department of Labour responds: “The inspectorate of the department is authorised by law to conduct inspections in the domestic sectoral determination”.

REPORT ABUSE: The Lwandle Library held an awareness day yesterday (Monday) to mark the end of the 16 Days of Activism Campaign for No Violence Against Women and Children. Ealier this year Lwandle Police, Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel Bongani Mtakati, estimated that domestic violence is reported to the station almost daily. The police has also dealt with numerous cases of child neglect. Zoliswa Kanuka, the event organiser, invited (from left) Patricia Thakholi (Patch), police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama and Nandipha Mantini (Department: Social Development) who encouraged the women and children who attended the event to report abuse and also informed them of organisations that offer support to victims of violence.

Make your own Christmas cards

Reindeer cards are a great holiday project for children.

PHOTO: KATESCREATIVESPACE.COM

Build a snowman While temperatures soar outside you can experience a traditional Christmas pastime with snowman building and ice skating at The Ice Station at GrandWest. Snowman building competitions will be held every Wednesday during the school holidays from 10:00 to 12:30. Prizes can be won for the biggest and best-dressed snow-

man, so bringing small spades, buckets and snowman accessories is essential. All good snowmen need eyes and noses and stick arms. Entry into the snowman building competition costs R5 and normal fees apply to anyone wanting to ice skate. Please contact The Ice Station on 021 535 2260 or www.icerink.co.za for more information

Why buy cards for Christmas when you and your children can make your very own at home? These simple and easy cards, featuring a reindeer made from hand- and footprints, are great fun to make, and make your cards so much more personal. You will need: Acrylic paint White paper or cardboard Coloured markers Decorations such as eyes, red pom-poms or buttons and scraps of gift wrap and glitter (optional) Method: Brush the paint onto your child’s hand, and press it firmly onto a sheet of paper or cardboard. Repeat with the other hand and one foot, making a V-shape with the hands, and placing the toes of the foot print at the join of the V. Use makers to add in details like eyes and nose, or use decorations such eyes, pom poms and glitter. Either fold the paper in half to make a card, or write you Christmas message in the back. A GOOD READ ON MARTIAL ARTS: Master Suliman International Kung Fu and Tai Chi School SA launched their first Martial Arts Magazine on Saturday. “Ek glo dat ek, met my gimnasium, ’n bydrae in my gemeenskap maak. Belangstellendes kan Eugene by 078 690 7828 vir nadere besonderhede bel.
