Serious about safety
Vonke House for assisted and independent living in Somerset West held an emergency drill on Friday 7 November. Members of the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Management department assisted in the drill to ensure that all the residents were safely evacuated from their flats and cottages, just as they would in an emergency.

Load shedding strikes yet again South Africa is once again facing the threat of load shedding after a silo that stores coal at one of Eskom’s power stations collapsed. The Helderberg Gazette hit the streets to find out how it is affecting the community and what they thought of load shedding.
lf Eskom announces load shedding at any time in the coming weeks, these are the times that you can expect to be without electricity.
Still stressed about load shedding? We have simplified the load-shedding schedule for the Helderberg (as supplied by the City of Cape Town). There are three stages of load shedding that could be implemented as the need arises. Stage 1 allows for up to 1 000 MW of the national load to be shed. Stage 2 allows for up to 2 000 MW of the national load to be shed. Stage 3 allows for up to 4 000 MW of the national load to be shed. The schedule for stage 1: ) Mondays: 10:00 to 12:30 ) Wednesdays: 16:00 to 18:30 ) Fridays:06:00 to 08:30 The schedule for stage 2: ) Mondays: 10:00 to 12:30 ) Tuesdays: 16:00 to 18:30

City to curb wheelie bin theft At least two cases of stolen wheelie bins are reported to the Lwandle Police each day.
The City of Cape Town is rolling out a new plan which aims to prevent theft and improve service delivery. The City will be fitting each 240 litre black wheelie bin in the Helderberg area with electronic tags that will assist them in monitoring service delivery and recovering stolen dustbins. Almost R1 billion is spend on replacing wheelie bins each year, and therefore the tagging system is being implemented to curb this expense. Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle Police, said there has been an increase in wheelie bin theft in the area. “It is believed that the bins are being stolen either for the purpose of transporting stolen goods, or to sell to other Lwandle residents.” Police warn that “individuals found to be in possession of dustbins which they cannot prove to be theirs will be arrested for possession of presumed stolen property.”
He added that people found to be using dustbins to transport items “will be fined and have their dustbin confiscated.” Gama said that in order for someone to have their wheelie bin replaced, they need to report the case to the police so that local council can issue a replacement bin. The City will be commencing the tagging process over the next few months. Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, the City’s mayoral committee member for Utility Services, said: “This will provide the means to improve operational efficiencies and effectiveness in managing labour, vehicles and services because the date, time and location of each bin lifted will be recorded.” Crew members conducting the tagging will carry an identity card with the City’s logo, a photograph of them, their full name and RAMM Technologies’ contact number. Residents are warned not to let anyone onto their property who does not carry this identification card. If you are unsure about the identification of a RAMM Technologies member or for any queries, contact RAMM Technologies on 086 111 7266 or the City on 021 444 7127.
