Sir Lowry’s Pass residents living on the temporary site of erf ST 1154-31 have asked the City of Cape Town to give them electricity. Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for human settlements in the City of Cape Town, says that although electrification for the site was not initially planned, the possibility is now being looked into. “The City of Cape Town and Eskom, in whose supply area Sir Lowry’s Pass Village falls, are looking at the possibility of providing tempo-
rary electrification,” Sonnenberg says. Residents say they made the request because they are worried that a lack of electricity create health and safety hazards. Several illegal electrical connections have already been set up, and this is of grave concern to the residents, says community leader Lionel Benjamin. Earlier this year, a Sir Lowry’s Pass woman was killed by a badly earthed illegal connection. The line sent a lethal current through her shack and electrocuted her. The other households on the temporary site are forced to use fires for cooking, light and warmth.
However, the site’s layout does not follow the fire regulation stating that buildings should be at least three metres apart. This, Sonnenberg says, is because the site is temporary. “As this is an emergency area, and due to space constraints, the city’s human settlements directorate has not enforced this. Experience has shown that it is very difficult to police as people often extend into this ‘fire break’, or erect a new structure in it.” Benjamin says there is an added health risk caused by the fires. “People have asthma and are badly affected by the smoke. They have been suffering from the cold, because they can’t warm their homes properly.”
The request is based on humanitarian concerns, says Benjamin. “People’s lives are endangered.” The City of Cape Town could not confirm when any electricity would be installed, as it is still investigating the feasibility of doing so.

Die Life Church in Somerset-Wes, in samewerking met die Greenminded Environmental organisasie, het 20 bome aan die Lourensia Park woongebied geskenk. “Ons wou die ouer geslag betrek, in plaas van om slegs op skole te fokus,” het Sonette Smit van dié organisasie gesê. “Op dié manier gee ons dit wat ons daagliks uit die natuur neem, terug.” Dié organisasie het ook 20 bome aan die Strand-gemeenskap geskenk. Rusthof Sekondêr het ’n skenking van 60 bome van die Strand Rotariërklub ontvang en elke klas kon twee bome plant en benoem. Volgens onderhoof René Terhoven is die plant van bome nie net om wetenskap aan die leerlinge te leer nie, maar ook om die skool te vestig.

After that he fetches another seven passengers, all of them from their homes, and takes them to the train station in Strand. The pick-ups at home are done at no extra cost. Kelly (52), who has been driving his taxi for 15 years, started collecting his passengers at their homes because, he says, it’s not safe for them to walk to the taxi rank at that time. “People were crying that no-one was safe. Skollies would take their phones and their money.
I said to myself: ‘What can I do to help them?’” His solution was to take them out of the dangerous situation by providing his door-to-door service, which he has been running for the last two years. The Macassar Taxi Association found their commuters had a similar problem, and so they also run a door-to-door service now, says the associations’s secretary, Arthur Rhodes. From 04:00, taxi drivers pick up their customers from their homes or the street, and then drop them off at their various destinations, all at no extra cost. The taxi rank opens at 09:00. A Sector 3 meeting for the areas of Van der Stel, Gants Centre and Strand North is to be held on 20 September from 19:00 at the Dutch Reformed Church on the corner of Joubert and Van Der Stel Streets. The meetings will look into strategies to build strong partnerships in the fight against crime.

Complaint campaign From too bright to just right NICOLE MCCAIN
A new patient complaints system being piloted at Helderberg Hospital is yielding positive results, according to the Department of Health. Patients who wish to lodge complaints can now SMS 31022, call 0860 142 142, or email service@westerncape.gov.za Since the launch of the complaints centre last month, 75% of queries were dealt with on the same day, and 50% were resolved overall, the department says. Gazette asked people if they felt the system was a step forward.

“It’ a good idea to have a complaint system, because then the hospital can improve its service,” says Shakeena Andrews from Broadlands Park. “Now, if you can’t get help at the hospital, you can call the call centre.”

The fences along Main Road in Somerset West got a make-over after a local business owner decided to pick up where the City of Cape Town left off. The City started painting the wooden fences on the traffic islands in June, but work came to a halt after some residents objected to the colour scheme of red, green and yellow, meant to reflect the City’s logo. “Comments received were that the trial colours were too bright,” says councillor Tandeka Gqada, mayoral committee member for community services. Gqada says the local City Parks office received four written letters and numerous telephonic complaints, after which the City decided to revert to the former colours of green and white. Rose McFall of Rose McFall Properties on Main Road then offered to complete the upgrade. However, bad weather delayed the painting, says Gqada, which has only just been completed. McFall says she took over the painting because she felt the colours were inappropriate for a historical town like Somerset West. As
her contribution for Madiba Day, she decided to pay for the upgrade herself. McFall estimates the job cost her around R10 000, for the paint and the two painters. Ward councillor Stuart Pringle says no money had initially been budgeted for returning the fence to its original colours. Gqada adds: “Rose McFall Properties offered their services voluntarily, and the local City Parks office accepted this as a once-off arrangement.”

Seven in court Seven men appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery on Friday. They were arrested after the Strand Cash and Carry in Main Road was robbed at midday on Thursday last week. Criminals assaulted the cashiers and demanded money. Police spokesperson Constable Mabulelo Mafuna says the robbers made their getaway in a Toyota Avanza after having helped themselves to cash, cartons of cigarettes and other items. The Strand police gave chase and arrested seven people at the intersection of Altena and Broadway Streets. The officers confiscated guns, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The case was postponed to tomorrow (Wednesday) for a bail application. Anyone who has information that could assist with the investigation is urged to phone Detective Constable Andrew Braaf on 0 021 854 9100.

Local Imam fights trash with information NICOLE MCCAIN
A local imam, prompted by the illegal dumping at the wetland along Boundary Street in Strand, has launched awareness events for children in the area. Imam Naziem Safodien arranged an education programme to teach children about hygiene, and why it’s important not to dump or litter around the wetland. “The existence of a wetland is very important. We need to appreciate our wetland by looking after it, and not damage it by dumping our dirt in it,” says Safodien. “So our appeal to the public living near the wetland is to look after the wetland.” Bags were distributed to locals to encourage them to dispose of their refuse properly, and
they were educated about the effects of dumping around the wetland. Safodien also distributed toothbrushes and toothpaste to the children. Safodien says the community is also appealing to the subcouncil to place a signboard indicating no dumping is allowed, and to fine any offenders. Ward councillor Johan Middleton, who pointed out that the fine for dumping illegally is R500, says the Metro Police do patrol the area, but people often dump at night. Middleton adds that no-dumping signs are often vandalised or stolen. But, he says, the Solid Waste Department does clean the area weekly. Safodien also says the community has no containers in which to place refuse. Middleton says the community’s concern will be sent on to Solid Waste, and a motion for containers will be put before the subcouncil.

Wellness Centre for Lwandle The Sizophila Wellness Centre in Lwandle opened its doors last Monday (3 September) In partnership with the Western Cape Health Department and the Strand-based Masincedane Centre the walk-in clinic will primarily offer HIV testing and counselling as well as TB screening, eye screening, family planning and pregnancy testing and blood pressure and blood glucose testing. The centre will also provide homebased
care in certain areas. An additional service is the patient support groups for HIV/AIDS, stroke and hypertension and diabetes patients. I went down to Somerset West Police Station and reported the burglary. An inspector was assigned to investigate the case. Somerset West Police Station contacted me on Sunday afternoon and arranged for fingerprints to be taken, during which the inspector came to my home and introduced himself. SAPS Strand went out of their way to keep me informed of the progress and let me know exactly what the thief had in his possession. They were extremely professional and helpful at all times. By Wednesday afternoon the stolen goods that the thief had in his possession were returned to me. I hope that this thank you at least makes a difference and lets the SAPS know that they are appreciated!

The police are appreciated! I would like to say a big thank you to the SAPS for their support and superb service. Also a thank you to the good Samaritan who alerted the SAPS, which led to the arrest of one of the individuals, still with some of the stolen goods in hand. Upon wakening on Sunday morning, 26 August, I found that I had been burgled. Luckily I sleep with my bedroom door locked. They had ransacked the rest of the house, helped themselves to food and wine, and were very selective in what they took. I had just opened my garage door to go and report the burglary when an SAPS Strand van pulled up in my driveway. They came to check the property after arresting one of the thieves; my name and address were in my laptop case, which the thief had in his possession.

Een van Macassar se sportsterre se talent is onlangs beloon toe sy vir die Boland-netbalspan gekies is. Lauren Martinus (22) het van 2 tot 11 Augustus in die Suid-Afrikaanse-kampioenskapstoernooi in Johannesburg deelgeneem as deel van die Bizhub Boland-span. Na afloop van wedstryde teen 11 ander spanne regoor die land, het die plaaslike span vyfde plek behaal. Lauren het in haar tienerjare as leerling van Hottentots-Holland Hoërskool begin netbal speel. “Een van my vriendinne het gesê ek moet dit probeer, en ek het toe uitgevind dat ek eintlik goed is,” sê Lauren. Dié verdediger het aanhou speel, en is reeds vir die laaste agt jaar op die netbalbaan. Haar betrokkenheid het nie ná skool geëindig nie. Lauren het vier jaar gelede by die Chrysalis Netbalklub in Macassar aangesluit. Sy en 12 ander vroue speel vir die klub, en volgens Lauren kry hul goeie ondersteuning van die gemeenskap. Lauren sê sy beoefen die sport vir meer as net die oefening. “Dis fun.
