NICOLE MCCAIN

The Edwards couple might have chosen a romantic getaway to celebrate their love, but others have been a bit more outrageous: • Mass weddings where from a handful to hundreds of couples get married in the same ceremony are quite popular. • A French man ended his internet relationship after meeting the woman he had been courting online for the first time. When they finally met, they were realised they were mother and son. According to scambusters.org, however, this story is an urban legend. • A Capetonian pinched a giant blowup heart that used to adorn the parking lot of a shopping mall in the city. He lay underneath the deflating heart overnight in order to transport it and then inflated it in front of the house of his sweetheart – for the whole neighbourhood to see. • A man in East Hampton in the United States who claims that his wife had once given him the best Valentine’s gift ever, posted a comment on www.msnbc.com saying that five lottery tickets were among the gifts she gave him that day. One of the tickets turned out to be a winning ticket worth $20 000. • Writing to more than 3 500 women to track down a potential lover could be considered crazy. According to www.guy-sports.com a Canadian reportedly met a girl called Sabine while travelling, but he was too shy to get her number or address. He started his quest by finding out the addresses of all Belgian women called Sabine – and writing to them. They reportedly made contact when her brother heard a radio broadcast on the subject. It is not clear what happened after their first phone call.

om tyd met mekaar deur te bring. “Ons bid saam, ons eet saam. Dis baie belangrik.”

For the love of reunions “Losing a pet is a heartbreaking process. And if there’s someone who can help reunite owners with their pets, they need to know about it.” This is why 47-year-old Louise Spagnuolo started Lost and Found Pets Helderberg, a free service that helps owners find missing pets. Louise uses a photo-based poster system to help easily identify the missing animal, which she distributes via social networking sites. However, her concern lies with Helderberg residents who may not have access to the Internet. “We get a lot of animals from Lwandle and Strand, and you can see they are well looked after. But the owners don’t know how to go about finding them.” Finding a lost animal as quickly as possible is vital,

Louise Spagnuolo, with her dogs says Louise, as they can be rehomed after seven days at Animal Welfare. This is why Louise gives a helping hand to owners. The first step is to contact her and she will help the home-owner

contact all the local vets and animal welfare organisations in the area. She makes a poster with a photo and distributes it to local shops and vets and also spreads the information online. But Louise’s role doesn’t stop there. She makes herself available to give owners advice and support while they look for their pet. “I’m just someone to talk to.” She has only been running Lost and Found Pets Helderberg for a year and part-time while she works and cares for her family, but has had wonderful results. “In December, our busiest month, we had a 75% success rate. And that’s with picking up between two and ten strays a day.” For Lost and Found Pets Helderberg, contact or SMS Louise on 081 041 7982, or email lostandfoundheld@yahoo.com

Police action added to list of Lwandle grievances NICOLE MCCAIN Public displays of dissatisfaction continued in Lwandle last week, as protesters gathered in front of both the Lwandle police station and In2Food. Community members marched to the police station on Wednesday, after police had broken up their public meeting, according to community spokesperson Thuliswa Sokhiya. Spokesperson for the Lwandle police, Constable Mthokozisi Gama, said that during the previous protests, charges had been made against a community leader for damage to In2Food property, as well as damage to vehicles that drove past. Gama says the police had gone to the gathering in hopes of arresting the suspect and not to disperse the crowd. A meeting was arranged between police and the community on Thursday morning, which prompted another protest in front of In2Food. “We don’t understand how they can press charges against one person, when the whole community was responsible,” said Sokhiya. Charly Nolte, spokesperson for In2Food, said, “In the light of both the various acts of deliberate vandalism and the assault on a member of the public, accountability was only to

Lwandle residents protest outside the Lwandle police station on Wednesday. be expected.” She referred the Gazette to the police for further comment. In2Food and representatives of the community met on Friday, but it appears no solution was found. “In2Food has rejected demands to unilaterally replace segments of its current staff with specially designated Lwandle residents, as this is unlawful and unrealistic. Spokespeople for this group simply dismissed the legislated requirements for Employment Equity as a ‘technicality’, as it did not suit their agenda,” said Nolte. Community representatives have called for

Keep your PIN safe at ATM NICOLE MCCAIN After a spate of ATM frauds in the Strand area, a Gazette reader has come forward with a warning: guard your PIN, or you may not be reimbursed after a theft. Porsha Nonma, who works at Builders Warehouse in the Helderberg, was at an FNB ATM in Khayelitsha on 19 December when she became a victim of fraud. As if the theft was not enough, Nonma has been fighting ever since to receive a form of compensation from her bank, Capitec. She says there was no one in the queue behind her, or around the ATM. After putting in her card, she was asked to enter the PIN twice, and then a noticed appeared saying she had entered her PIN incorrectly. “I was sure it was the right PIN, so I thought something was wrong. I decided to rather leave it then.” When she tried to cancel the transaction, her card would not come out the machine. While at the ATM, she called Capitec and cancelled her card. However, after she had ended the call, she received notification that R3 000 had been withdrawn from her account and another R7 000 airtime had been purchased, in R1 000 instalments. Nonma says she filed a charge with the police and gave all the relevant information to the bank to launch an investigation. She was told she would be contacted within three days but was not. She then followed up with Capitec on three occasion, and finally received a phone call from the bank on 26 January. “I spoke to a woman who told me that my money would not be refunded, because my PIN had been compromised.”

Nonma says she is struggling to understand why she has not been refunded. “Why did I get robbed? The bank was robbed.” At the time of print, Capitec had not yet provided a response. As a general rule, Eric Larson, spokesperson for Standard Bank, says, “If there is a clear indication that the PIN has been compromised, in general, banks do not pay. But each case is assessed individually.” He says ATM users should cancel the transaction as soon as they realise something is wrong. Keep in mind the following safety tips when withdrawing money at an ATM: ) Remain aware of your surroundings without allowing anything or anyone to distract you while doing your ATM banking; ) Choose a familiar and well-lit ATM where you are more visible and safe; ) If you think the ATM is faulty cancel the transaction, immediately report the fault to the bank and try another ATM to transact; ) Be cautious of strangers offering to help as they could be trying to distract you in order to get your card or PIN details; ) Memorise your PIN, never write it down or share it with anyone; ) Don’t let anyone stand too close to you whilst at the ATM and shield the keypad when entering your PIN to ensure that no one can see it.

Protesters were met with strong security as they picketed outside In2Food on Thursday.

50% of the In2Food staff to be from Lwandle. Notle added, “In2food remain committed to the equitable placement of all groups of applicants and it will not be blackmailed into arbitrary considerations such as residential proximity to our premises becoming criteria for conferring arbitrary preferential treatment.” Nolte maintains the protest action is being driven by private interests, instead of the community’s concerns. “After having sporadically and unlawfully interrupted operations at our premises, with subsequent criminal acts of

vandalism against the company, SAPS and the general public, it is now clear that this small group of self-appointed ‘community agitators’ have targeted several employers in the Lwandle/Strand area and have embarked on an extortion campaign of threatening disruption and violence unless their unrealistic and unconstitutional demands are met.” Community spokesperson Ntsika Bavuyise said the action does not stem from only a select few individuals, but rather the whole community, roughly 50% of which are unemployed.

Liefde is . . .

FOTO’S: NICOLE MCCAIN

Michandré Miggles, graad 5, gaan haar ma hierdie Valentynsdag bederf. “Ek gaan my ma rose gee of blomme, of ’n koppie met ’n teddiebeer daarin.

Lewende blomme, daarteenoor, is altyd welkom. “Blomme is mooi en dit laat my net so mooi voel,” sê Marissa. En as hy dit by die werk laat aflewer is dit véél beter: “Miskien is dit net daardie openbare verklaring van liefde wat sê: ‘This is my woman and I am proud of having her in my life!’” sê Riana.

“So ietsie wat sê: ‘Hey, ek is baie lief vir jou en jy laat my hart bollemakiesie slaan.’

Readers let their fingers do the talking Residents sent in quite a number of SMSes this week, ranging from reactions to the living conditions of the people of Riemvasmaak, to a question about the absence of the regular Gazette recipe: RIEMVASMAAK TOILETS ) How did the toilet door in Riemvasmaak cometoberemoved?Surelyamemberofthecommunity can put it back on again? And pick up their own rubbish? No wonder they are poor if they don’t even want to help themselves. – Jan, Strand ) The conditions are disgusting, but what are the residents doing? I’m sure there are many unemployed persons who could form work parties and clean the trench that is full of the residents’ rubbish. Who broke the toilet doors off? Why hasn’t the service provider sorted out the problem of the smell and doors? Instead of community leaders complaining about things, why haven’t they rallied the community to take pride in their homes and surrounding area? Are the refuse bags in bins or are they easily available for every hungry dog in the area? It is all very easy to point a finger at the City of Cape Town for everything, but what are the residents doing? There seems to be fallow ground; why are there no gardens and vegetables being grown? A lot of the household rubbish makes very good compost. It is so easy to complain and lay blame. I am not rich, I live on R10 a day.

There are too many things that need to be corrected. ) I would like to comment on what Charly Noltesaidaboutthehappinessofthecommunity: we are not happy and even the employees of In2Foods are not happy. They are supporting us. ) If In2Food want to employ somebody, it’s their right to do so, immaterial where these employees come from. They pay the salaries, they have to meet their payroll every month, so they can choose who they want to employ. The local community has no right to demand anything from In2Food. ) In2Food will be making a big mistake to employ people who vandalise their property.

– Red.

Why not do something yourself? Your article, “Uphill battle for Riemvasmaak”, in last week’s Gazette refers. If the City of Cape Town is right in its answer, then Riemvasmaak has a problem in itself by littering, vandalising and not taking care of the facilities at their disposal. If Riemvasmaak has elected a span of responsible community leaders, they should keep order within their own community and not allow those degrading things to happen (they are mostly the result of criminal behaviour by irresponsible individuals). The City can fine those who litter, those who vandalise, those who don’t respect the facilities provided, which are real crimes, but when will these communities start taking care of their own problems, clean their communities from criminals and start to improve their behaviour? Why are those townships always filthy places? If one wants to be respected, one must start to respect oneself and one’s environment. If I need some facility, I must pay for it myself. Here the City is providing the facilities for the community, but the community doesn’t respect them and expect the City to maintain them when the community degrades them.

Western Cape Health Department extends services through Clicks

Somerset West residents will now be able to receive immunisation and family planning services from their local Clicks clinic, after a recent agreement between the Western Cape Department of Health and the Clicks Group.

“The aim of the agreement is to make vaccines and family planning more accessible to more public health care patients,” says Prof Craig Househam, head of the Western Cape Department of Health. Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, said, “The benefit of this partnership is that the arrangement will enable our primary health care facilities to channel pa-

tients toward Clicks clinics and shorten the queues at primary health care facilities.” Patients can dial 0860 254 257 and make an appointment for a consultation with a nurse at a Clicks clinic for vaccines or contraceptives. The stock will be provided by the provincial government to the Clicks clinics. For this service, patients will be required to pay a convenience fee of R75 for vaccines and R50 for the first-time family planning consultation. A follow-up family planning consultation will be R35. On Thursday afternoons from 13:30 until 17:00, these services will be free for all patients whose children were born in a state hospital and without access to medical aid.

It is recommended that patients make appointments in advance for Thursday afternoons to avoid disappointment. “Vaccination medication for babies in their first 18 months can cost more than R3 500. I believe that the agreement offers a tangible benefit for our patients, and is unique to this province,” says Botha. Since the pilot project began in November last year, more than 500 baby immunisations and consultations have been rendered, and more than 180 of these services were rendered through the Clicks Helping Hand Trust, with the convenience fee paid by the trust.

Control your pregnancy cravings Almost all pregnant women experience food cravings during pregnancy, particularly for unusual snacks such as peanut butter and pickles. Mediclinic Vergelegen is making it possible for you to educate yourself about pregnancy and healthy nutrition, and to understand your food cravings. Mediclinic Vergelegen is presenting an education week in February, with a range of free, informative sessions to enlighten and inspire moms- and dads-to-be. The programme takes place on Saturday 23 February from 09:00 to 12:00. No-one knows why these cravings happen, but generally these aren’t harmful if not practised to excess. There is some evidence to suggest that you may crave nutrients that your body needs, and hormones play a powerful role. Hormonal shifts during pregnancy intensify the sense of smell (which influences taste) and are powerful enough to affect your food choices. Whenever possible, a pregnant woman should seek advice from her doctor or dietician if she is practising an unbalanced eating habit. You need to gain a certain amount of weight during pregnancy to ensure that your baby develops properly. If you start your pregnancy with a normal body weight, then it’s important to allow your body and the developing foetus and placenta to increase in weight by 11,5 kg to 16 kg. Pregnancy is not the time to be figure-conscious. Once the baby is born, you’ll lose weight during the birth and shed the last few kilos if you follow a sensible diet, breastfeed your baby and go for walks every day. To join Mediclinic Baby, a free programme, visit www.mediclinic.co.za/mediclinicbaby or call 021 943 6039.

Start afresh with your debt If you have emerged from the festive season depressed by your debt situation, make it your New Year’s resolution to take control of your finances again, says Mmadikwa Phoshoko, debt counsellor at Legal & Tax.

DRUGS CONFISCATED: A stroke of luck helped Strand police arrest a man for possession of drugs last Wednesday. The man, a foreigner, was carrying around 600 g of tik with an estimated street value of R165 000. He was also found with an undisclosed amount of cash. The arrest was made by Sergeant Oswald Adams while on patrol. He stopped the driver of a vehicle that drove through a red light, which led to the arrest. Here are (front, from left) Sergeant Adams, Sergeant Nabeal Basadien and (back) Colonel Eugene Zama with the confiscated items.

Phoshoko says that overindebted consumers have a range of options for finding their way out of a tight financial corner without having goods repossessed or getting blacklisted by a credit bureau. As a start, you can ask your creditors – the people who lent you money – to change your repayment terms to ones that you are better able to match each month. If that option will not work, you could look at entering the debt counselling process, says Phoshoko. This is a legal process in which you apply to have your debt restructured so that you can pay household expenses and still be able to pay off debt at a reduced instalment at the end of the month. “Don’t think of debt counselling as an easy way out, though – it is a process that demands commitment and sacrifice from you,” says Phoshoko. “But it can be the fresh start you need if you have become overburdened by debt.” You can enter the debt counselling process by ap-

proaching a counsellor who is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR). If you are unsure who to use, contact the NCR to check for a debt counsellor in your area. The debt counsellor will take care of your debt restructuring process for you, which will culminate with seeking a consent order for new payment agreements in court. The consent order insures that your creditors stick to the new repayment arrangement and may not take legal action against you, says Phoshoko. There is no guarantee MONEYWISE: Getting debt counselling that your creditors will can be the fresh financial start you were agree to the proposals looking for. Residents gather 250 kg of rubbish

How does one bring a stray golf ball in line? NICOLE MCCAIN

Strand residents rolled up their sleeves on Saturday 2 February to ensure their beach becomes cleaner and safer. Almost 35 volunteers collected litter along the beach during the clean-up. Organiser Chris Robertson says the volunteers collected around 250 kg of trash. The beach clean-up is set to become a monthly exercise, with the next one taking place on 2 March. The venue for meeting up will be the HH Beach Sailing Club at the Strand Kiteboarders Club next to the lifesavers’ clubhouse, opposite the big orange building on the beachfront. The clean-up starts at 10:00, and bags, gloves and sunscreen will be provided. For more information on the volunteer project to keep beaches clean in the Strand, please contact Chris Robertson on 072 275 9304.

Helderberg Gazette

Tracey Clulow brought her sons, from left, Zac (5) and Luke (6), to help clean up the beach.

Residents of Lower Gordon’s Bay Road in Strand would be impressed with the distance some golfers at Greenways Golf Estate are able to hit – if only it weren’t in the wrong direction. One resident has had five golf balls land in his garden in the last three months, one of which damaged one of his windows. He says the impressive shots see the golf balls come flying from the grounds of the golf estate, over the estate’s wall and Gordon’s Bay Drive, and into his garden. But despite the possible concern over their property, the resident is more concerned about the traffic and pedestrians on Gordon’s Bay Drive, as well as his children who play in his front garden. “What if a ball comes and hits them on the head, or if it crashes into the windscreen of a car driving past?” Greenways Golf Estate manager, Wilhelm Neethling, says this is the first complaint Greenways has received, and the course was changed in 1993 to reduce the number in balls flying over the fence. Neethling assures Strand residents that golfers are not taking shots at their homes. “Golfers, including professionals, endeavour to remain within the boundaries of the course – this is, after all, the essence of the game. Should a ball stray over the fence, we can assure you it was unintentional.” Neethling says the estate unfortunately

can’t guarantee the skill of their players. “No golf club can be held responsible for the quality of players making use of the facility and measures to stop golf balls flying into neighbours’ gardens proved futile.” However, says Neethling, they have done their best to get golfers aiming in the right direction. “Greenways’ in-house rules provide for ‘any player that damages a car or any other property by hitting a golf ball over the boundary wall is entirely responsible for the damage caused’.” Neethling advised any complainants to lodge their complaints with Greenways management as soon as possible after an incident. “Time is of the essence, especially while the player is still on the course, to enable Greenways management to establish who the responsible player is.”

BEPLANDE ONDERBREKING VAN ELEKTRISITEITSTOEVOER Gordonsbaai

Chris Robertson, pictured here, says almost 250 kg of trash was collected on the day.PHOTOS: NICOLE MCCAIN

Kefuoe Lento, Klaus Piprek, Dale Dolphire, Khalid Kader and Ben Clulow were some of the locals who took part in the cleanup.

Lwandle local Sandiswa Blouw started a soccer club for girls in 2011 but it has grown into much more than just a team. “I am their mother, their teacher, their healer and their coach,” says the 45-year-old mother of three. Her 30 players come to her not only to learn to play soccer but also to bring their problems to her attention. Sometimes, the problems are simply solved, such as when the girls asked Sandiswa to provide something for them to eat before training as they come from school hungry, but others are more difficult to solve, such as funding the necessary kit. The team started with no equipment, and Sandiswa bought balls with her own money. The girls were fortunate to have a kit sponsored by a team in the UK but many of them don’t have boots. Sandiswa says most of the girls’ parents can’t afford to buy boots and training kits, and funds are always a problem. “The girls asked me if we could get tracksuits so that they can feel like a formal team. But the money…”

The rugby season has kicked off and all rugby clubs are very busy with their pre-season preparation. The Strand rugby clubs will soon start with their 15-man rugby matches. Strand RFC will play their first friendly on 22 February at the Gustrouw Sport Complex. The match against Hawston RFC will be a very exciting clash, and members and friends of Strand RFC are encouraged to book early. A sixty-seater luxury bus will be used and tickets are available from management at R100 each (adults) and R70 for children (toddlers free). For more information, contact Alie Harris on 082 518 3459 or Agmat Latief on 072 020 5007.

Sandiswa started the club because she realised that young girls in the township have very few places to socialise outside of school. “I looked at the social life of girls in the community and realised there are no programmes for them. So I decided to start a soccer team, especially for the girls who don’t like netball.” Sandiswa’s club is for girls between the ages of 12 and 18, as “that’s when teenage life starts”, but she lets girls as young as ten join because she feels that they are also vulnerable. The coaching Sandiswa provides is not only on the sports field. She also runs a programme with the girls, broken up into eight workshops, where she discusses issues they might face. “At the first one, we discussed teenage pregnancy. The girls come from homes where there is unemployment, and they often look for boyfriends who can clothe them and support them.” Sandiswa also plans to tackle the issue of HIV/Aids and loss, as she says many of the players have lost parents and are grieving for them. The girls practice four times a week, and Sandiswa Blouw can be contacted at 083 354 5270.
