Lose your holiday flab quickly lunchtime. But don’t make the alltoo-common mistake of trying to cut out fats altogether. Good fats can actually help you lose weight, so bust your cravings with rapeseed oil, walnuts, eggs and skinned chicken thighs. Don’t starve yourself It may seem counter-intuitive, but not eating doesn’t make you thin – eating properly does. Skipping breakfast just lowers your metabolism for the day, while upping your hungry-cranky factor. Try consciously eating six small portions a day and see for yourself. Try to include all four of these simple practices into your daily routine and your abs will be popping in no time. – Andrew Luyt, Health24
Go green Studies have shown that green tea may not only flush out the toxins left over from your holiday indulgences, but can also speed up your metabolism. So why not make up a few litres in the morning and knock it back throughout the day? It’s perfectly acceptable hot or cold and an easy way to cut the calory content of that beer tankard which inexplicably welded itself to your hand during the holidays. Eat for fuel, not for excess You know what to eat; just make sure it’s on hand so you don’t constantly find yourself reaching for the take-out menu. Stock up on berries, low fat muesli for breakfast and dig into high protein, low fat salads at
Have you been overindulging in just about everything over the festive season? Here’s how to make sure that festive gut doesn’t hang around. Cardio Cardio exercises involve some serious fat burning – which would be great if we weren’t all back at our desks now, slouched in front of our computers like sloths with opposable thumbs. So don’t waste your precious exercise time with yoga and Pilates – toning and core strength training can wait until you are back in shape. To lose inches fast, you want to be on the bike, in the pool or simply pounding the pavement.

Call to put your child’s health first – immunise Parents are encouraged to take their children for health checks before the commencement of the academic year. These checks include general check-ups and vaccinations. According to a City of Cape Town statement, these immunisations are offered free of charge at all its health facilities. “I urge parents to ensure that their children receive these vaccinations, which are administered via an injection in their upper arm. Prevention is always better than cure,” says Mayoral Committee member for Health, Benedicta van Minnen. “We still have a few days left before the academic year starts, so [it’s] as good a time as any to get the vaccinations done for children who need to get these shots.” The National Childhood Immunisation
Schedule states that children are given the tetanus and reduced strength of diphtheria vaccine at the age of six and 12. City Health staffers can also provide advice on good nutrition. “We place a heavy emphasis on responsible behaviour, but also good nutrition. “Our staff can help parents with advice on finding a balance for children’s lunchboxed, which will positively aid their growth and development and keep them healthy,” Van Minnen explains. “Child obesity is a grave concern around the world, so we need to do everything possible to promote healthy eating habits and exercise.” City staff will also conduct awareness campaigns at schools and educare facilities throughout the year.

City reviews its janitorial programme
Local amateur photographer Gideon Nel took this photograph on Strand Beach when he and his family visited the beach on 23 December. Nel says the beach was crowded on the day. “It’s the first time in years that I have seen it this full at that time of the year, and we have not been to the beach since, as it became even busier in the days to follow.”
Summertime photos
Helderberg beaches were packed with sun seekers, residents and holidaymakers eager to take a summer splash over the festive period. Some locals used their cameras to capture the holiday fever and share their holiday photographs taken on our beaches during the holidays.
Various factors, including disagreements about recruitment from communities, has led to the City of Cape Town reviewing its janitorial programme. According to a council statement, the programme has proven ineffective in various communities across the metropole. This includes some Helderberg informal settlements. The programme, which was first rolled out from mid-2012 until last year, includes the daily cleaning of flush toilets, standpipes and surrounding areas; minor repairs to flush toilets; and reporting of all instances where more extensive repairs are needed. In informal settlements, toilets have been provided at a ratio of one toilet per 3,2 households. But a recent assessment has shown a number of factors have negatively impacted the project. These include ongoing disagreements in communities about recruitment, resulting in the failure to recruit any janitors; a lack of support from community leaders; excessive vandalism of facilities; threats to the safety of City staff

monitoring progress; and faults not being reported. “We have decided that resources used for the janitorial service in certain areas will be reallocated to the City’s maintenance and cleansing teams, resulting in quicker response times and more frequent cleansing around the toilets,” says Mayoral Committee member for Utility Services, Ernest Sonnenberg. The process commenced on Saturday 10 January, while the janitorial programme will still run in 104 areas. “The scaling back of this programme does not mean that these areas will not receive any maintenance and cleansing services,” Sonnenberg explains. “The janitorial service is an additional service, over and above the services already delivered by the City. The existing services will continue as before; merely additional janitorial services have been reduced.” According to the results of the assessment, 83% of the areas initially involved in the programme showed that it had been successful.
later in their lives. The group aims to get teenagers and adults together in one place to support each other and find a sense of belonging. The format of FACT is based on that of an AA session. The group will meet at the Methodist Church in Church Street, Strand at 19:00 on Wednesday 21 January.
