He also adds: “This radio station has built my psychological mind through challenges that I faced when I arrived.
DIY tip of the week Welcome to the Helderberg Gazette’s do it yourself feature which has tips and ideas which our DIY readers may find useful. This week, we highlight several ways to use a rubber band when taking on DIY tasks. So make sure to save all your rubber bands and keep them with your other workshop tools.
Do not want your door to lock? Loop a rubber band around the door handles on both sides of the door, thereby preventing the door from locking when it closes.
Use a rubber band to keep paint from dripping by placing it around the paint container and then using this as a place to keep your paint brush to let the paint drip back into the container, ensuring that you do not waste any paint or drip paint on the floor or carpet.

Washing hands can prevent diarrhoea Western Cape healthcare data indicates that there has been a rise in diarrhoea cases, particularly in children under five years old. The Western Cape Health Department has appealed to parents and caregivers to take special care of their children who are prone to this disease during the upcoming diarrhoea disease season (DD season). The DD season is between November and May when there is an increase in acute diarrhoea cases due to the warm summer months. Diarrhoeal disease is defined as loose or watery stools at least three times per day or more frequently than normal. Although most episodes of childhood diarrhoea are mild, acute
cases can lead to significant fluid loss and dehydration. This may result in death or it may have other severe consequences, if the body’s fluids are not replaced. Since the introduction of the hand-washing campaign in the Western Cape, the department has recorded a remarkable decrease in diarrhoeal disease hospital deaths in children under five years old. Hand-washing as a regular hygiene routine can play a significant role in the prevention of disease. Since 80% of germs are spread from our hands, it is vital to wash your hands in between activities where you may deal with germs.

Make your own cheap, safe pesticides There are many safe and effective ways to control pests in your home and garden without using harmful pesticides. Natural pest control is less expensive than buying and applying pesticides and is safer for your garden, family and pets. ) Chop, grind, or liquefy one garlic bulb and one small onion. Then add a teaspoon of powdered cayenne pepper and mix with one litre of water. Steep for one hour and then strain through a sieve or colander. Add one tablespoon of dish washing liquid to the strained liquid and mix well. Spray your plants thoroughly, including leaf undersides. Store the mixture for up to one week in a labelled, covered container in the refrigerator. ) Crush leaves from a tomato plant and soak
in water for a few days. Strain the mixture and put it in a spray bottle. This concoction is great for controlling grasshoppers and flies. Tomato leaves are poisonous, take care when preparing and handling. Do not use on food bearing plants. ) Bring four cups of water to a boil. Then add two tablespoons of basil. Remove from heat and cover until cool. Then strain the mixture and add in one teaspoon of dish washing liquid. This works well for aphids. ) Mix two tablespoons of salt with five litres of boiled water. Allow to cool to room temperature. Use for spider mites, caterpillars, cabbage worms and other chewing insects. Mix dish washing liquid with water and spray onto plants as a light insecticide that will not harm your plants.

The City of Cape Town’s Department of Economic Development has received a ward allocation from Subcouncil 8 to provide community members between the ages of 18 and 35 with the opportunity to receive code 8 driver’s licence training and testing in the second half of 2014. en wie weet hoeveel mense is deel van daardie families.

Caregiver academy launched The Livewell Group, which specialises in dementia and Alzheimer’s care, has established a first-of-its-kind training division to supply the health industry with top notch, professional care providers. It will offer accredited and industry-recognised qualifications at its facilities in Somerset West. An open day where visitors can learn more about the new academy will take place on 28 November and 3 December, from 11:00 – 14:00 at 41 Lourens Street, Somerset West. According to Livewell Academy managing director Winsie Oosthuizen, the Livewell Academy courses are ideal for job seekers looking to launch a career in the care industry. “Professional carers are very special people. They often work under difficult circumstances, but thrive on the joy they bring. It’s not for everyone, but if caring comes naturally to you, you should certainly consider signing up at Livewell Academy.” Livewell Academy will offer SETA-accredited training in the care of a frail or memory im-
paired person. In addition to specialist memory and frail care training programme, it offers professionally developed short courses on dementia, life skills, therapies, pharmacology, grooming, nutrition, housekeeping, basic computer skills, basic nursing procedures and basic first aid. The practical part of the training will take place at Livewell Suites. Anyone who has passed Grade 10, or the equivalent, and is at least 18 years old can apply to enrol. Applicants must have a passion for caring for elderly people and be set on furthering their career with related studies. Applicants must be able to speak Afrikaans and English, and willing to work 12-hour shifts. All applicants will undergo an assessment to determine their suitability and competency for the course. The first enrolment takes place from 3 November 2014 to 16 January 2015, with the course starting in February 2015. It runs for about five months. Bursary applications are welcome.

The European paper wasp is a medium-sized wasp (20 to 35 mm) with wavy yellow and black markings on the abdomen and orange antennae. The wasp builds papery nests in wall cavities, under roof eaves, and in any gaps they can find.
Plans to control ‘foreign’ wasps as they swarm the Cape The European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) and the German wasp or yellowjacket (Vespula germanica) have found the Cape metro and Boland area to be ideal habitats suited for their expansion. Given their invasive nature, concern has arisen that if these wasps are left uncontrolled, they may spread to the majority of towns in the Western Cape and other provinces where the climate is even more suited to their dominion. As per the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (NEMBA), both species are listed as Category 1b invasive species, which require control by means of an invasive species management programme. The City of Cape Town and the Stellenbosch Municipality have put in place dedicated teams who are trained in invasive wasp control and will therefore be equipped to address the spread of these invasive wasps. “I am confident that our qualified teams will manage the current situation effectively and prevent these wasps from spreading further across the metro,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Councillor Johan van der Merwe. “The wasps are currently most active in the east region of the city including areas such as Somerset West, Kuils River
and Kraaifontein.” According to international cases of invasion involving both species, these insects have the potential to create problems ranging from being a nuisance to serious economic impacts in the wine, deciduous fruit and beekeeping industries. It is known that the German wasp in particular is aggressive and there are several reported cases of them stinging workers harvesting grapes and other fruits. They can also present a hazard to residents and homeowners enjoying the outdoors who may unintentionally disturb a colony. They are known to attack and kill honeybees and infiltrate bee hives, which is detrimental to the honey industry. “We urge all residents to take note and to report any increase in the number of these wasps at their homes or businesses. In this way residents will be assisting the City in determining which areas to focus on and preventing the potential nuisance and impact that these wasps might have on our city.” Residents requiring assistance with the removal of these wasps can visit www.capetowninvasives.org.za/edrr/ target-list to report any nests that they have found. Further information about invasive species and their impact can be found on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ ctinvasives (with a Cape Town focus).
Early detection and treatment can prevent blindness in children There are currently 39 million blind people across the world, and this number is set to rise to 76 million by 2020 if there is no intervention soon. The good news is that 80% of all visual impairments can be avoided or cured and 50% of childhood blindness can be prevented by early detection and treatment. Look regularly and carefully at your child’s eye for abnormalities such as: ) A white pupil or white spot on the pupil; ) Not being able to fix on and follow a moving object such as a finger or toy; ) One, or both eyes being bigger or smaller than usual; ) Crossed eyes or one eye looking in another direction; ) Redness of the eye and around the eye and/or crustiness;
) Swelling or inflammation; ) Excessive watering; and ) Eyes protruding or sticking out. You can also prevent blindness in your child by observing their behaviour. Does your child: ) Cover or close one eye when trying to focus on something; ) Hold objects close or get very close to the TV, computer or blackboard; ) Have trouble reading or doing close-up work; ) Tilt or angle the head when trying to focus; ) Complain that things are difficult to see; ) Squint or frown when concentrating and/ or looking at things in the distance; Speak to a health care professional immediately if you suspect a problem or your child displays any of the symptoms listed above.

The Hottentots Holland Weightlifting Club (HHWC) in the Strand will be represented by eight lifters and a coach at the National Championships at the Bellville Technical High School on 10 and 11 November. These lifters fulfilled the qualifying criteria and will represent Western Province at the event. They are: Hendriquo Roux and Joshua Swartz (De Hoop Primary School), Dinesh Pandoo (Somerset West Primary), Chelsea Koopman (Gordon’s Bay Primary), Lamees Daniels (Hottentots Holland High School), Reinhardt Bernardo (Strand High School), Willem Pretorius and Zayanda Mjezu. Coach Jonathan Haman said it was a great honour for the club and lifters
to represent WP and added it is also a testament to their hard work and dedication to the sport. Since their selection all eight weightlifters have been training hard and Haman, who has been selected as one of the coaches for the WP team, said he is expecting some very good performances from all the WP lifters at the nationals. He added that the HHWC members attended WP training sessions over the last two weekends and looked set to register new personal bests, lifting in WP colours. The HHWC club has embarked on a long-term athlete development programme and is planning on producing top quality lifters for the future, aiming at the 2018 Youth Olympics and the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Wedloop op L’Avenir
Aveenash Pandoo, HHWC official and national coach, said the number of lifters from the club competing in their first nationals was a testament to the success of the programme. He said the lifters know exactly what to expect and are very disciplined and goal-driven. He added that management at the club and parents of the lifters wished all the lifters well for the nationals and believed they will win lots of medals for the province, the Helderberg and their club. Pandoo will be on duty at the national championships as a technical official for the National Weightlifting Federation, while another HHWC member, Mark du Plooy, will be head of all the loaders at the competition.
