The Macassar team from Masincedane danced and sang to entertain the members. The theme of their performance was the importance of condomising. The Macassar SmartCape facility.

SmartCape offers free computer services Macassar residents are urged to use the City of Cape Town’s SmartCape facility at the Macassar library.

The SmartCape facilities were initiated in 2002 with five facilities, but the phenomenal success of the pilot project led to a SmartCape corner being introduced in each of the more than 100 libraries across the city. The SmartCape facility provides computers and internet facilities. “Although the SmartCape facility is available across the city, uptake and usage is quite high in some areas in comparison to others. Our aim is to raise further awareness of this free service available to communities to help make progress possible by connecting our most vulnerable residents with opportunities,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Xanthea Limberg. For the period July 2013 to June 2014, user statistics have revealed that one of the areas of low SmartCape usage is Subcouncil 22, which includes the suburbs of Macassar, Eerste River and Mfuleni. A total of only 32 573 SmartCape sessions have been recorded for Subcouncil 22. These sessions are broken down into 72% by males

(23 502) and 28% by females (9 071). As is the norm across most Subcouncils, the bulk of the users were in the age group of 26 years and older, which made up 43% (13 997), followed by the 18 to 25-year-olds making up 31% or 10 153. Incidentally, 9% (3 009) of users fall into the youngest group of 12 years and under. The majority of users, 70% or 16 040, use SmartCape to access the internet and 13% make use of Microsoft Word. A smaller number of users make use of the facility for e-mail, internet chat relay, the typing tutor and other Microsoft packages. Registered users are allowed one session per day for a maximum of 45 minutes, unless otherwise arranged with the administrator. The time limit helps to manage the high demand for the facilities, especially after school. “Residents in the Macassar area are again reminded that the facility is available for their use. It is free and we would like to see residents making the most of the SmartCape facility. We can help to make progress possible for our residents by providing these facilities but we need them to seize the opportunities. This is the only way we can build a sustainable city and economy,” said Limberg.

Masincedane honours its own Local community health organisation Masincedane celebrated the work their counsellors and community care workers do with a special event on 12 December. During the event, held in the Somerset West town hall, the members were addressed by Professor Ashraf Kajee who spoke about the difficulties that community care workers face at work each day. He commended all Masincedane members

for the work they do and reminded them to also take care of themselves considering the kind of work they do. Masincedane is a non-profit organisation responsible for taking care of the HIV and TB patients in the Helderberg. The team includes: 22 counsellors, who are based at clinics and day hospitals including the Helderberg Hospital, and 54 community care workers.

Professor Ashraf Kajee addressed the members of Masincedane about how important the work that they do is and how much they are appreciated.

Dorothy Abrams from the Sir Lowry’s Pass team delivered a presentation about how quickly HIV and TB can spread through communities and shared stories from her own experiences working with patients who have these illnesses.

Port of Call cocktail

Bestanddele . Witbrooddeeg (beskikbaar by die meeste bakkerye by supermarkte) . Babatamaties (effe saggebraai) . 1 ui in dun ringe gesny en stadig sag gebraai . ’n Mengsel van Mozzarella, cheddar, feta of enige ander kaas . Biltong of gerookte beesvleis (dun gesny) .

Mmmm, braaivleis, slaai, vrugte. Niks groot of duur nie; net baie handig. Gevolgtrekking?

In addition, there will be 218 lifeguards on duty who will oversee the City’s 36 public swimming pools over the peak holiday season. “We want to emphasise that safety is a shared responsibility between the City and our beach goers and pool users. While the City does provide lifeguards in conjunction with our partners, this service does not exist to take the place of a parent or guardian’s supervision of children,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker. On peak days, the high numbers of people visiting beaches and pools make it very difficult for lifeguards to keep a watchful eye on all swimmers. The lifeguards are under constant pressure

to keep a keen eye out for anyone in distress. Parents need to be on high alert when their children are playing in or near the ocean, a river or a pool. Children can also get lost on crowded beaches and parents are urged to be particularly vigilant. Beach goers are urged to take heed the following safety tips: ) Swim only where there are lifeguards and where signs indicate that it is safe to do so. ) Make sure the lifeguards can see you when you are in the water. ) Always swim between the red and yellow flags. These indicate safe, supervised swimming areas. An area outside of these flags could have dangerous rip-currents and tides. ) Only swim in areas where other people are present. Swim in groups and advise friends or family when you go swimming. ) Do not swim when there are marine animals such as whales, dolphins and seals in the area or when a marine animal carcass has washed up onto the beach. ) If you find yourself in trouble, raise your arm and wave to attract the lifeguard’s

attention. Try not to panic, as this will make you tired. ) If you see someone in trouble in the sea, alert the lifeguards or find trained help. Do not put your own life in danger as well. Pool users are asked to take note of the following when using public pools: ) No alcohol, firearms or animals are allowed on the premises or in the pool. ) The use of soap and glass containers is prohibited. ) Ball games or frisbee games are not allowed in the pools. ) Underwater diving equipment, inflatable mattresses and tubes are not allowed in the pools. ) The playing of loud music and the preparation of food are not allowed on the premises. ) No running and pushing or rough play is allowed. ) Children under the age of seven must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. ) Children over the age of seven are not allowed in the baby pool. ) Any illnesses must be reported to staff before using the swimming pool. ) The superintendent’s instructions are to be obeyed at all times.

However, I want to challenge our clients to play a more constructive role in their own health and well-being by eliminating habits and behaviour that have a negative impact on their health, being proactive in getting tested regularly for HIV and TB and making an effort to adhere to their treatment regimens if they are diagnosed with a disease. Reducing the burden of disease is not a government problem – it is everyone’s problem”, she adds.

St Georges host 1 700 kids at Christmas party St Georges Rugby Club hosted more than 1 700 underprivileged children at their annual Christmas party held at the Gustrouw sports grounds on Saturday 6 December. This was the ninth year that St Georges RFC have invited disadvantaged children from Broadlands Park, Gustrouw, Casablanca, South End, Morkel’s Cottage and Erijaville areas to their Children’s Day (Christmas party) which is held annually in the first week of December. The children were provided with food and drinks and entertained with fun and games throughout the day. The City of Cape Town contributed towards the event through its come and play section and provided jumping castles, slides and other games but all the food, cold drinks and gifts were the responsibility of the club. The following sponsors/partners all contributed to the day and once again made the Christmas party the success that it was: City

of Cape Town, SA Home Loans, Strand Fire Station, Blue Downs Service Station, Strand Paint & Hardware, Tafelberg Furnishers, Jacobs Sand & Stone, Peninsula Beverages, Jimmy’s Trailers, Gordon High School, Pienaar Bros, Oxbridge College, Wayne’s Mechanical Services, Sebastian Williams and Golfers, Ricmatrade CC, Xantium Foods, Melvin’s Transport, Landrover Stellenbosch, Wynland Glass and Central Mini Market. Next year (2015) will be the tenth year anniversary of the children’s day, and St Georges Rugby Club will be hoping to accommodate at least 3 000 children from the surrounding areas at this annual event. The president, committee members and executive of St George’s RFC expressed their gratitude and appreciation to all involved in making the day a huge success. * The club also operates a soup kitchen throughout the year in the above mentioned areas and have come to know the plight and the conditions these children grow up in.
