YOU BOOZE YOU LOSE
NICOLE MCCAIN While celebrating the festive season, beach-goers should make sure to leave the booze at home. During last December and January, over 7 700 bottles of alcohol were confiscated on beaches throughout Cape Town. However, more than 3 000 of those bottles of alcohol came from Helderberg beaches,
said Richard Bosman, executive director of Safety and Security at the City of Cape Town. This adds up to 40% of all the liquor confiscated by the City’s law enforcement officers. In the week between Christmas and New Year, 650 bottles were confiscated at a value of almost R10 000, said Bosman. Alcohol is prohibited on beaches and at public swimming pools by law. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member
for Community Services, Councillor Tandeka Gqada, said: “This rule will be strictly enforced because the consumption of alcohol on beaches often leads to drowning incidents. Alcohol impairs your judgement, balance, coordination and reduces your body’s ability to stay warm. It is therefore extremely dangerous to drink alcohol before or while swimming, diving or boating.” According to Bosman, once alcohol is confiscated, it is kept for three months to allow
the owner to collect it. After that it is destroyed. According to Gqada, there were five drownings in the Helderberg last year, of which three occurred at the Strand and two at Harmony Park. Volunteer lifeguard Peter Helfrich says that drinking on the beach is one of the biggest challenges faced by lifeguards, and they see many cases of people swimming under the influence.

Haar kennis van organiese tuinmaak het sy in Augustus vanjaar tydens ’n tuinbou-kursus aangebied deur Soil for Life aangeleer.
Somerset-Wes-inwoner en plaaslike Soil for Lifekoördineerder, Vanita Drew deel in haar student se trots.

Gather each third into ball, wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate until firm. This should take about 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 180°C. On a floured work surface, roll one third of dough at a time out to around 5 mm thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out Christmas shapes, such as hearts, trees and angels. Cut a hole close to the top of each cookie with the end of a straw. Transfer the shapes to ungreased baking sheets, spacing 2 cm apart, and bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden around the edges. Transfer to a wire rack to cool, and then thread a ribbon through the hole at the top to allow them to hang on the tree. Source: blogs.babble.com

L’ford workers get early increase
NICOLE MCCAIN
Lourensford Estate workers have received an early Christmas present, after the farm management and workers reached an agreement to increase their wages. The workers striked last month during widespread protests in the agricultural sector, demanding an increase from the minimum wage. Lourensford farmworkers said they were earning R72,50 per day at the time of the strike, and wanted it increased to R250. Paul Mokwana, speaking on behalf of the farm workers, says an agreement has since been reached to increase the minimum wage by R10 a day, as well as pay an additional travelling allowance. “It was not the amount we were looking for, but it will help until the government decides in April.” The Department of Labour was due to reconsider the minimum wages. However, according to labour minister Mildred Oliphant, by law a new sectoral determination for a minimum wage could only take place 12 months after the last wage adjustment, which was March 2012. Phillip du Plessis, CEO at Lourensford Estate, confirmed that an increase had been negotiated, but would not confirm the amount. “It is difficult to give an amount, as the employees are paid on a sliding scale.”
With summer here, many children will be rushing to play outside, or go to the beach. However, every year children go missing over the festive season. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna, spokesperson for the Strand police, says the station deals with around ten cases of missing children during the year, but the number increases during December and January. “During the festive season some days you get five children in one day, most of them lost at the beach. Most of them are either found by parents at the police station or we transport them home.” Mafuna adds that they open a reporting point on Beach Road in Strand to deal with complaints like missing children over the festive season. According to Missing Children South Africa, a child goes missing every six hours, according to figures released by the South African Police Service Missing Persons Bureau. This adds up to a total of 1 460 children nationally every year. While Missing Children South Africa’s statistics shows 87% of them are found within the first week, there are almost 200 children that are not found
Police say almost 1 500 children are reported missing annually. every year. And even those children that are reunited with their families can be left with tragic stories, such as 6year-old Ashley Davids who went missing in September from Lwandle. A close family friend filed the report with the Lwandle police, as his moth-
er was ill and unable to. Lwandle police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama says the circumstances behind the child’s disappearance are still unclear. Two months later, Ashley was found wandering the streets of Cape Town, and taken to a place of safety.
Missing Children SA suggests parents try the following tips to keep children safe this summer: ) Do not wait 24 hours before reporting a child missing. ) Know where your child is at all times, whom they’re with and what they are wearing. ) Keep a photo of your child on you, so that they can be identified in an emergency. ) Teach children their full names and addresses, as
well as your name and your telephone number. ) Show your children the way to the nearest police station or clinic so they know how to find it if they get lost. ) Teach children to take the same route to and from places. If your child goes missing, you can start looking on the discussed route.
) Create an exclusive family password, and teach your children that when you send a person to pick them up, the person should know the password. If they don’t know the password, your child should not go with them. ) Give your children forms of identification, like an ID bracelet with your number on.
Armed robbery at U-Save in Nomzamo The Lwandle police is offering a reward for information on a robbery that took place at Usave Shoprite, Nomzamo last week. The robbery occurred at about 17:40 on Wednesday 12 December when eight armed men entered the store and demanded cash. According to Lwandle police spokesperson, Constable Mthokozisi Gama, the men first approached the security guard on duty, pointing a gun at him and forcing him to the ground. People with information can phone the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Marius Erasmus on 082 522 1208 or 021 845 2060.
The USave Shoprite was targeted by armed robbers last week.
This allowed the Lwandle police to contact his family. However, Ashley’s mother had passed away while he was missing, giving them no chance to say farewell. Social welfare is currently looking to place the child with extended family, or he will live in the place of safety permanently.

Which way do I go? Some Lwandle residents are confused as to exactly where they live, as the area is now riddled with misspelt street names. Vulindlela Street has been spelt Vulindela, Noxolo Street appears as Nxolo, Nonkqubela Street as Nonqubela and Michael Street as Micheal. Residents are worried that visitors will not find their way around if they have to follow the incorrectly spelt street names. Lwandle resident Mandisa December says she noticed the new names when driving home from work. “It’s a bit of a problem. I often spell the street names for people and now when they get here, they will have to go looking all over the location to find the street!” Councillor Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Roads and Stormwater for the City of Cape Town, says the City is aware of the mix-up, which was a “result of human error and incorrect names being supplied”. He assures residents that they won’t stay lost for much longer, as new stencils have already been ordered and the Department of Transport, Roads and Stormwater is awaiting their delivery. Once these arrive, the City will ensure the names are changed back to the correct spelling.

Newsmakers of the year Met die einde van 2012 in sig, het die Helderberg Gazette mense op straat gevra wat hul mees nuuswaardige gebeurtenis vir hierdie jaar was.
Some street names misspelt during the painting process.
“The Marikana miners’ strike was news for me,” says Mase Runeyi (20) from Makhaza. “The way police opened fire on those men were brutal. And, the animosity between our people saddens me.”
Mpumelelo Xelelo (39) from Lwandle says his biggest news event was on the political front when Julius Malema got suspended from the ANC Youth League. “As a comrade I am disgusted in the way that Malema bad-mouthed the ANC. This can affect the party very badly and gives competing parties the opportunity to counteract.”
“The accident on the N2 between Gordon’s Bay and Sir Lowry’s Pass which claimed the life of a 25-yearold woman was simply tragic,” says Shorty Morries (53) from Strand. “I use that road daily and that could’ve been me.” Musa Phanda (32) from Lansdown e says that his biggest news event for 2012 was the farm workers’ strike which took place in November. “I sympathise with those workers who work hard for a living in these tough economic times.”

Nel, Strand Santa Claus carriage drawn by a donkey? You clearly don’t know what a donkey looks like! Reader, S/West
Medical issue, not political Helderberg Gazette content, 11 December, refer. I read on your comments page that a reader feels aggrieved that there should be two waiting rooms separating patients with Aids and patients with TB. His/her complaint is that this violates their human rights. I hold the opposite view, because if I had Aids I would certainly avoid close contact with persons coughing and wheezing from TB! It could easily turn into a death sentence. Conversely, in line with his civic duty and common courtesy, the person with TB should not mind ensuring that he/she does not infect others. Surely in a situation like that there is no room for maudlin about the politically correct use of a single waiting room! So, don’t try to make a political issue out of a common sense medical issue. Best regards, and keep up the good work.
RIC WILSON, SOMERSET WEST
The Helderberg Gazette apologise for mistakenly referring to the Santa’s pony as a donkey.
Keep beaches clean Having started something earlier this year (likely not the only person), I refer to the article in the Helderberg Gazette of 6 March, titled ‘Who makes these rules?’. It is great to witness the opening of beaches and the relaxing of the rules. I would like to thank all the individuals who together took this decision and, more importantly, implemented it. It is now up to the dog owners to respect and uphold these rules. Take a packet with you so the dogs are not responsible for more litter than humans – a fact we are well aware of. To all, a very blessed Christmas and all you wish for in the New Year, Mayans willing of course. Thank you again.
