The Helderberg National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) teamed up with Surf South Africa, Autism Surf Project and Strand Life Saving to give about 20 autistic children the opportunity to surf. The children, from all over the Helderberg, were treated to a fun-filled day on Strand Beach where they surfed some waves with a little help. The event was sponsored by the National Lottery and the Department of Sports and Recreation. Here Adriaan Naude (10) speeds onto shore with lifeguard Josh van der Linde in tow.

Lucille is dankbaar vir plaaslike be-

Medication shortage to affect the Helderberg
The Western Cape Department of Health (WCDH) has announced a severe medication shortage in the province.
This shortage, which according to the Department is as a result of the failure of the National Department to manage pharmaceutical contracts, will unfortunately affect clinics in the Helderberg. The shortage can be expected to affect health facilities for the
Members of the Cape Town K9 Unit and Stellenbosch Crime Intelligence arrested a 19-year-old man for being in possession of abalone worth about R500 000. The suspect’s white Audi was seen on the N2 near Lwandle in the early hours of 12 November. A high-speed chase soon ensued. The team chased the car to Eerste Rivier before pulling it over and discovering 2 545 units of abalone in the boot. In an attempt to escape from the police, the suspect also drove into and damaged a police vehicle as well as a civilian vehicle.

The WCHD is also requesting patients to ensure that they utilise all existing medication in their possession before asking for a repeat prescription. Patients who experience any problems should contact the health facility closest to them or contact the WCHD on 021 483 8408.
next two months. The WCHD is working on distributing current stocks evenly throughout the province and is repacking certain medicines into smaller patient-ready pack sizes. The Department is also perusing alternative suppliers during the shortage. “I apologise for the inconvenience that will result during this time but earnestly request the full cooperation of all those af-
Child safety seats now mandatory who died as passengers in road crashes were recovered outside or under the vehicle. “The presence of the body outside the vehicle is a near-certain indicator that the child was not restrained or was improperly restrained, as ejection does not occur when an appropriate child restraint is used,” says Grant. “The presence of the body inside the vehicle, however, is not an exclusionary factor in determining if the child was restrained or not.” He says the analysis therefore erred on the side of caution by default.
The new amended National Road Traffic Act (NRTA) now requires infants (defined as 0 to three-yearolds) to be transported in appropriate child seats when travelling in a private car. The NRTA had previously not made any provision for the protection of children in this age category. Donald Grant, minister of Transport and Public Works, says an analysis conducted by Safely Home, using audited fatality data from the Forensic Pathology Services of the Western Cape Department of Health, showed that the majority (53,42%) of the bodies of young children

Hughes (22) is missing and was last seen in Disa Road, Gordon’s Bay on 8 August. Shaunette has dark brown, short, curly hair and weighs about 50 kg. She was wearing a hooded jacket, jeans and sneakers when she went missing. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts can contact Missing Children SA on 072 647 7464 or the Gordon’s Bay Police on 021 856 2677.
The data is indicative of a minimum of two small children being killed on Western Cape roads each month after being ejected from a vehicle in a road crash. Passengers ejected from a crash face a 75% chance of being killed due to ground impact injuries and collisions with other objects and vehicles. The fine for people who offend by not transporting children aged zero to three years in appropriate child seats must still be determined. “Children who are unrestrained, even on an adult’s lap, will be seriously injured or killed, even in a slight collision. “We therefore appeal to all motorists and parents to buckle young children in appropriate car seats, and protect them from the horrific injuries suffered by unrestrained kids.”

Tuesday 18 November 2014 GUY FAWKES-PRET: Suzan Euro-

Great do it yourself ideas for Christmas CASSY VAN EEDEN Christmas is just around the corner and the time has come to start preparing gifts for friends and loved ones. But it has been a difficult year financially for many people and buying extravagant Christmas gifts may not be an option for you. You can however make some truly special gifts, which may be more appreciated than something storebought. Here are some ideas to get you started using things you may have around the house. A coupon book: This is a great one for children to make for their parents. Cut out a few pieces of cardboard or paper to the size of a R100 note. Decorate each piece of paper or cardboard any way you wish, using glitter, colour pens, or whatever your heart desires. Then write something on each piece of paper that the recipient can cash in. For example, a coupon for doing the dishes, a foot rub, a hug or anything else you think the person would like. Staple the pieces of paper together on one side and you have a great gift for someone special. A memory jar: Use an empty jar that you have around the house. Decorate it any way you like. Write ‘2015’ on the jar using a permanent marker or glitterglue. Cut up a few small strips of paper to come with the jar. Every time the recipient has a good day or an exciting event in their lives, they can write it down and put it in the jar. Then on Christmas 2015 they can go
A great gift for anyone is a memory jar. Using and empty household jar you can create a gift that can be used all year long.
Using old t-shirts (or other stretchy fabric) you can make bracelets for Christmas gifts. These are perfect if you do not have much time to make something.

through the memories of the year. Pocket warmers: Use whatever material you have around the house from old socks to ruined tablecloths and cut out two heart shapes. Sew them together leaving a small hole open. Fill the heart bag with rice or barley. These hearts can then be warmed up in the microwave and placed in jacket pockets to keep icy hands warm on cold days. Snow globe: Use any empty jar that you may have around the house. Fill it with water and sprinkle a generous amount of glitter into the water. Stick a small toy such as a snowman or a santa with superglue onto the lid.
Then glue the lid onto the jar and make sure it is 100% sealed. Then turn the jar over and shake. Personalised mug: Buy a plain white mug (or any colour you like, but white is easiest) and use paint and permanent markers to decorate it. You can write the person’s name on it or a special quote. Cookie jar: Fill an empty glass jar with sweets or bake your own biscuits. Decorate the jar with ribbons, raffia or glitter. Fabric bracelets: Use old pieces of t-shirts and cut them into thin strips, about 50 centimetres long. Plait the strips until you have a braid long enough for a bracelet. Tie the two ends together.
A coupon book is quick and easy to make and may be far more appreciated than a store-bought gift.

Patch, the Helderberg Centre for Abuse, recently held its Small Change for Hope campaign. Helderberg College and Hottentots Holland High School participated in the campaign and together both schools raised enough small change to allow one child to receive the treatment needed, for an entire year, to deal with the trauma of having been sexually abused. The monthly cost for one child is R212 per month, and R2 544 per year. “A heartfelt thank you goes to both schools, PATCH could not survive without the help of the community and for this we are truly thankful,” said Amanda-Lea Jones, Corporate and Community Fundraiser for Patch. Hottentots Holland High School teacher and coordinator of the project, Annette Meyer (left) is seen with the money which the learners contributed towards the project.
The Strand Renewal Ministries will be having their annual Miss Dreamgirl beauty pageant on Saturday 6 December. The event will be held at Rusthof Secondary School and the funds raised through the event will go towards the building of their church. Girls aged between 15 and 21-years-old can enter the competition. Generous cash prizes are up for grabs – the winner will walk away with R3 000, R2 000 for second place and R1 000 for third place. Those interested in entering Miss Dreamgirl Beauty can contact Eltesha Hendricks on 021 850 4703/ 083 981 0587 or e-mail her at Eltesha.Hendricks@westerncape.gov.za.

Fix your toilet yourself Your toilet will not stop running. Calling a plumber, especially after hours, can be an expensive exercise.

Business safety this season As we head into the holidays, many business owners may appoint additional employees to support staff during the festive season. In recent weeks there have been a number of newspaper reports of robberies at businesses in big malls and in smaller complexes. “It is important that owners and employees discuss safety concerns and how to reduce the risk of robbery or theft,” says Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security Western Cape. Small retailers are especially prone to losses as a result of shoplifting, burglary and internal theft. Dale says these safety tips will help protect the business: ) Have two employees open and close the business in the morning and at night; criminals have been known to force staff inside and get them to open the safe or tills. ) Always arm the alarm system when the business is closed. ) Leave empty till drawers open overnight and at weekends. ) Do not keep high value items in the window as they are a temptation to smash-andgrab. ) Install safety glass as a deterrent for burglars. ) Carefully check bank notes and credit card details; be aware of the buyer’s body lan-
guage and be suspicious if they appear nervous. ) Shoplifters often work in teams; one will distract staff while the others take items or open tills. ) If someone tries to commit a robbery do not try to stop them. They are often desperate and dangerous people, and most carry weapons. ) If you have CCTV, set it to record 24 hours a day. ) Keep store rooms locked when not in use and install good quality security gates. ) Position CCTV cameras towards the door/counter and high-value goods. Install convex mirrors that allow employees to easily observe all corners and aisles. ) Use electronic tags that cannot be removed by a non-employee without damaging the merchandise. ) To protect against employee theft, screen all employees before hiring them - it is the best defence against internal theft. ) Install silent alarms and panic buttons to alert notify police and give them a better chance to catch perpetrators. ) Work with a security supplier who can offer a tailor-made solution to your security needs. Location, store layout, stock and customer profile make a business unique.
However, there are some tricks you can try yourself first that may save you time and money. The flapper: The constant running of water in your toilet happens when the flapper leaks through the hole at the bottom centre of the cistern. This means that either the chain is twisted, snagged or caught on the handle arm. The ideal chain length has some slack when the handle arm is at rest. Ensure the flapper chain is untangled and flush the toilet a few times to make sure the chain does not re-tangle. As an emergency measure, if the chain has broken, you can use a paperclip or cable tie to repair the chain. Running overflow tube: Another typical cause for constant running is when the cistern’s water is flowing over the top of the overflow tube, situated in the middle of the cistern. First check the water level and make sure that it is about four centimetres below the top
There is no need to call a plumber right away if your toilet will not stop running. You can try these easy steps yourself first and possible save yourself a lot of cash at the same time. of the overflow tube. If you discover that water is flowing over the tube, this means that the adjustable float is not working properly. You can readjust the float by increasing the length of the rod that connects the float to its arm. If this does not solve the problem then it is best to replace the float with a new one. Vaseline can save you more money than you think Vaseline, a by-product of petroleum jelly, is an inexpensive and versatile household product that has many uses you may not know about. Light bulbs: Have you ever unscrewed a light bulb and found yourself holding the glass while the metal base remains in the socket? It will not happen again if you remember to apply vaseline to the base of the bulb before screwing it into the fixture. This is an especially good idea for light bulbs used outdoors. Watermarks on wood: Watermark rings on your wooden furniture can be a sight for sore eyes. To make them disappear, apply vaseline to the area and let it rest overnight. In the morning, wipe the watermark away with the Vaseline. Chewing gum: Remove unsightly bubble gum from wood, such as under a table, by putting vaseline on the gum and rub it until it starts to disintegrate and then remove it. Tough bottle tops: If you are having a hard time unscrewing the lid off of a jar, nail polish bottle or glue, remember this tip for when you finally do get it open. Rub a little vaseline along the rim of the bottle.
This will prevent it from sticking next time. Soften chapped hands: Apply a liberal amount of vaseline to your hands just before you go to bed and by morning they will be soft and smooth.
Vaseline is a cheap do-it-all product that you can use almost anywhere in your home, from table tops to light bulbs.
