‘Government doesn’t work for us’
A small group of farmworkers at work at Lourensford Wine Estate yesterday (Monday).
NICOLE MCCAIN Farmworker protests at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West are on ice to allow for negotiations on wages to take place. The strikes, which occurred in various Boland towns, have prompted the Employment Condition Commission to meet tomorrow (Wednesday), to renegotiate the minimum wages paid to farm workers. The outcome will be announced on 4 December. The current minimum wage is R70 a day, which is not sufficient according to farm workers. Paul Mokwana, spokesperson of the Lourensford employees, who embarked on a
protest last Tuesday, said many of them struggle to pay rent, transport and school fees, and keep up with rising food prices. He said the Lourensford farmworkers currently earn R72,50 per day and are demanding that it be increased to R250. One of the employees, who asked to remain anonymous, says, “Our people work in the heat, and only for R72 – it is not worth it. And when it rains, we cannot work. Food is expensive and we have children at school.” Another worker added that changes need to come from government level. “The government doesn’t work for us. They need to come here and see.” Lourensford CEO, Phillip du Plessis, says that employees earning R70 are “on the lower
end of the scale and there is a large percentage of workers who earn more.” Across the province, workers have been negotiating for an increase to R150 a day and Cosatu had rejected an offer from farmers of R80 a day last Monday. Farmworkers receive one of the lowest minimum wages in any sector in the country, says Brigit Schwarz, spokesperson for Human Right Watch. In March, the Gazette reported that farm workers received an increase of 9%, which brought the minimum wage up to R70 per day. The next increase is due in March 2013 and would be according to the consumer price index plus 1,5%. This would mean an increase of around 7%. Lourensford was the only farm
in the Helderberg to experience strike action, although 16 towns in the province were affected. Du Plessis confirmed that negotiations were under way with the workers, and that there had been no further strikes at the farm. However, both Cosatu and Mokwana say if they do not receive R150 in negotiations, the strikes will continue.

SLP families home after fire The four families affected by the fire in Riemvasmaak in Sir Lowry’s Pass have rebuilt their homes and moved back into them. The Helderberg community has opened their hearts to the victims through donations of food, clothing, building material and labour. The fire, which was allegedly started by a candle in Julia Petersen’s house just before 21:00 last Saturday, destroyed the home she shares with eight others. Her 72-year-old mother, Maggie, was admitted to the Helderberg Hospital for burn wounds and was discharged the following day. Community leaders have on several occasions requested for electricity for the settlement, which was established when the City of Cape Town relocated families worst affected by flooding to the site in July. Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayco member Human Settlements says the planned incremental development area is an Eskom electricity supply area. “The human settlements directorate has asked Eskom to supply electricity, but this will be subject to Eskom’s approvals and timelines.”

Helderberg school dropouts a concern Helderberg high school principals are worried about the rate of dropouts at their schools. Gordon High, which has almost 1 250 pupils, had almost 70 leave by the end of September, says principal Bernard Simons. Macassar Secondary School principal Yusuf Abrahams, says that to date he has had 63 of his 770 pupils leave the school. “This is a lot, but there are usually more – around 90 to 100 every year.” Eric Titipane, principal of Khanyolwethu High school in Lwandle did not have the number of school leavers available, but says
the school does have a high number of pupils who drop out. Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for Western Cape MEC of Education, Donald Grant, says that no records are kept for pupils dropping out of high school. However, a retention rate is calculated for the entire province, taking into account how many pupils started grade 1 and finished grade 12. This is currently at 56%. All the principals cite socioeconomic reasons as a factor in pupils dropping out of school, and that pupils also often leave because they struggle academically.
Getting through exams Matric exams are well under way, and matriculants across the Helderberg are hoping for a little bit of extra luck to get them through the question papers. The exams kicked off on 22 October with English papers, and the matrics have since written maths, history and accounting, amongst other subjects. The exams are due to end on 28 November. Gordon High School principal, Bernard Simons, says the exams have gone smoothly thus far, and he is expecting good results. The Gazette spoke to matriculants at Gordon High, to hear what brings them good luck.
Bronwyn Fortuin says he doesn’t need a lucky charm. “You just have to study, that’s enough.” Devon Thomas says he always carries a lucky coin. “I have a Swedish Krona which is my good luck charm. I play golf, and I use it to mark my ball. It’s a bit superstitious, but it helps me.”
“We have a lot of dropouts in grade 10,” says Titipane. “Some of the pupils relocate, but in many cases it comes down to the livelihood of the families. Some just can’t afford to be in school, even though we’re a no fees school.” The principals also say that drugs, gangs and teenage pregnancy also play a role in pupils dropping out. The lack of a completed education will hamper pupils later in life, says Titipane. “The consequences are far reaching. We need literate adults.” According to Abrahams the solution lies with parents, and Titipane agrees, saying
Jy moet net hard genoeg leer.” Amy Savoury always wears a silver chain to bring her luck. “My boyfriend gave it to me. Iwearitforevery exam.”
ForMandilakheMvanestudying is his lucky charm. “If you study, it gives you confidence and that brings more luck than something material.”
that a culture of learning needs to be promoted at home. “There’s a disintegration of the family, and this leads to a lack of guidance for pupils.” Titipane also thinks the community need to have indabas and forums to encourage learning. Abrahams says that pupils who drop out very seldom return to school. Simons, however, says he welcomes pupils back into the school if they’ve dropped out. “We’ll let them back, depending on how much work they’ve missed. Many pupils return the following year, especially after pregnancies. All of us make mistakes.”

Indien u kan help kontak Sarah Daniels by 073 558 3026 of adoptaparentandchild@gmail.com.

Briewe
SMS-lyn - Broadlands Village: ’n kopseer CRIME IN BROADLANDS VILLAGE There are 28 drug houses in Broadlands Village and the security is pathetic. Residents in 14th Street have not slept in the past seven months because of break-ins and robberies. I have saved about five people; the last guy was stabbed twice in his lungs and side. He cannot even drive his car today. Two weeks ago a young man was robbed at gunpoint - his phone and R500 were taken. Where was the security? There were meetings held the whole week and I only saw two guards. Ek en my gesin moet elke aand
Genoeg is genoeg. As ’n Broadlands Villageinwoner is ek teleurgesteld in wat hier gebeur. Ons betaal ’n klomp geld waarvoor ons hard werk. Support against drugs. I support the City of Lights Projects.
Cindy

Bel Tanja Louw by 076 185 2362, Gareth Leibrant by 082 691 9292 of Chanté de Bruin by 076 689 3481.
Konsert by skool Die Playway Pre-primêre Skool in Somerset-Wes hou op 1 Desember ’n musiekaand.

An early Christmas for Tereo School Pupils of the Tereo Missionary School had an early Christmas treat recently. The Standard Bank Women’s Development network visited the Somerset West school and spoiled pupils with a lunch of hotdogs and cake. Each of the 46 pupils also received a colourful drawstring bag containing stationery and toiletries. A trolley of non-perishable food and paint were also donated. The network would like to thank all the businesses for supporting the initiative and making the occasion a special one for the children.
