Pensioenaris se kookpot ’n vars kookrevolusie
“
Gaan loer gerus in, of bel Kiewiets by 078 751 9381.
Emmers, plastiek kratte, of self ’n goedkoop katboks (R26 by Pick n Pay) kan gebruik word. As alternatief kan jy by plaaslike tuin-entoesiaste gaan aanklop en ’n paar wurms by hulle kry.

Help make a kid’s Christmas special The Halli Trust is planning two Christmas parties in November for about 380 children in poor communities. The trust is a non-profit organisation and needs assistance with some of the items that they would like to give to children at the
parties. There are also about 50 babies under the age of two for whom donations of baby toys would be welcomed. Heidi Naude, a trustee of the Halli Trust says many of the children need basic toiletries.
There will be about 120 boys and 90 girls between the ages of three and 15 and also a group of 16-19 year olds. Donations of toothpaste, soap, deodorant, facecloths, sporting items and toys can be given. Children will also be given juice
or cooldrink, chips, sweets, ice cream, hot dogs, burgers or pizza. The trust is also looking for a performer or singer to donate their time and perform at the parties. Contact Heidi on 082 339 6876 or 021 851 9591 if you can help.

Why are there no police patrols? People please. What are the police doing about the women who are being attacked when they walk home from In2Foods place? Why are the police not watching that area or patrolling? If it is common sense that this is happening, then why aren’t they doing something about it? It’s unacceptable.
These women are trying to make a living for themselves and their family and then they can’t even be safe when they go home at night. The company must pay for transport for their staff to take them to their doorstep if they are forced to work that late.

Good luck with your exams, matrics I would like to wish all the matrics in Macassar good luck for the coming final exams. If you stay focused you really can achieve the results you want. Study as hard as you can, this is your last opportunity to make sure that you pass your schooling career successfully. Don’t be influenced by other students around you who may be drinking or doing drugs instead of studying, you are responsible for your life, not them.
Parents, please be considerate of your children who are trying to study and of the children who live near you. Loud parties and braais and drinking interrupt their studying, and this is a very important time in their lives, don’t be the person to ruin it for them. Most of all, remember that luck favours those who prepare. Study hard and then you can have a nice long Summer holiday with good marks as your reward. Good luck!

Somerset West resident Allan Smith spotted this puff adder near the ablution facilities at Radloff Park last Monday. A professional was called in to remove and relocate the snake. Snake season is upon us and Helderberg residents should take special care at this time of the year, warns local snake removal specialist Wayne Furno.“Spring is always a good time for snakes to be out,” says Furno. The first heat experienced in spring is typically when snakes come out of their winter hibernation period. Helderberg residents have reported several puff adder sightings on Facebook, particularly in Radloff Park and near Beaumont Primary School. If you have been bitten by a snake, it is imperative that you seek emergency medical care immediately as snake bites can be fatal. Go to the nearest hospital or call an ambulance on 10177. If dogs are bitten, it is best to slowly walk them or carry them to your car, so as to slow down the spread of venom, according to Radloff Park Dog Walkers’ information officer Louise Spagnuolo. Get the animal to a vet as soon as possible. For snake removal phone Wayne Furno on 082 874 9811. PHOTO: ALLAN SMITH
Composting project yields impressive results The roll-out of composting containers for residents to use at their homes, as well as education on how to use them, resulted in the diversion of significant amounts of organic waste from landfill sites, and was met with enthusiasm from all areas where it was tested. As such, it is recommended that the project be considered for wider implementation in the city over the next two financial years. A feasibility study for a home composting programme was undertaken during 2013. Evidence suggests there are significant potential benefits to wide-scale composting, both environmental and social. According to recent statistics, an average total of 21 kg of household organic waste from kitchens and gardens per household enters the waste stream monthly. A total of 677 individual participants from four different areas took part in the study, and selected to be as representative as possible of the economic makeup of the city. In addition, two schools and one community organisation involved in food gardening were also selected to test the viability of collective composting. Participants were provided with home composting containers and educational material, and requested to measure the volumes of kitchen and soft garden organic waste diverted to their home composting containers dur-
ing the period from March to November 2013. The results of the study revealed an active rate of participation in the programme of 91%, showing a high level of interest in organic waste diversion programmes. In total, more than 38 tons of household organic waste was recorded as being diverted from landfill at an average of about 16 kg per household per month. This figure is based on the average of 41% participant feedback data reporting per month. In terms of community-based organic waste drop-off sites, a total of 13 kg (per composting container per month) of organic waste was diverted. In addition questionnaires revealed up to 90% of home composters surveyed (616 initial respondents) used to dispose of their organic waste into the wheelie bin, but by the final questionnaire 78% of the 239 respondents who responded were composting at home. “In a programme where buy-in from the public is so crucial, these statistics are very encouraging. As a result the City’s Department of Solid Waste Management is aiming to further explore how best to implement such a scheme. “The City looks forward to working together with residents to improve our environment and foster responsible waste-disposal habits,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Utility Services, Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg.

Potting magic for your garden Brighten up your patio, living area or around your pool with some container magic. Here are Stodels’ tips on how to grow healthy and happy container plants to create a stunning feature in your home. You will need the following when potting up a container: Your choice of container River sand to stop water from running through your pot Bone meal to stimulate root growth Potting soil and drainage chips
Aquasoil or Stockosorb Nitrosol Decorative stones Pot and tray How to plant in containers • Make enough drainage holes at the base of the container • Cover the bottom with a layer of small pebbles. The larger the container, the thicker the layer of pebbles • Add a layer of wet river sand • Cover with a layer of moist compost • The planting hole should be 16 cm wider than the diameter of the root area of the plant • Pour a little water into the hole
where the plant will be positioned • Spread the roots out evenly to avoid bending them when placing the plant in the hole • Add 60 mg (a handful of bone meal to the mix) • Cover the roots with soil • Add a sprinkling of Aquasoil or Stockosorb • Firm down the soil around the transplanted plant and water well. Remember: Choose plants that complement each other, the setting and the containers that they are in. And, make use of the wide range of colours, textures, foliage and scents.
