The art of baking
Xmas bear hug Christmas came early for preschoolers from the Helderberg when they were treated to a Christmas party on Saturday. The party was arranged by the Friendly Frog Preschool in Van der Stel and 20 children from the United Methodist Church Preschool in Nomzamo were invited to join in the festivities. The Halli Trust also came on board, ensuring that the children had a memorable morning of games, singing and dancing. Heidi Naude, founder of the Halli Trust and Halli, the mascot, seen here with the children, handed out gifts of sweets and teddy bears to their young guests after the entertainment. Have your say about coast
Nicola Hanekom from Somerset West was the lucky recipient of R25 000 in the Marcel’s Moments 25 Year Birthday Celebration competition that was concluded in September. “It is such an amazing experience to win the prize. As a student, we always loved going to Marcel’s, but my favourite moment was when my mom, sister and myself tried its frozen yoghurt for the first time,” says Hanekom before receiving the winner’s cheque.
The City of Cape Town requests members of the public to have their say about its proposed Coastal Management Programme. The City is the largest coastal metro in South Africa. Its coastline, stretching 307 km, is arguably its greatest socio-economic and environmental asset and it provides a critical support base to the residents of Cape Town. Interested parties have until 3 December to comment on the proposed programme. The City of Cape Town’s draft Coastal Management Programme has been devel-
oped, in part, to give effect to the Integrated Coastal Management Policy. The City’s Council adopted this policy in September 2014, which is a first for a South African municipality. This cornerstone policy seeks to mitigate the risks posed by climate change, whilst simultaneously optimising the socioeconomic and environmental potential that the coastline offers to residents of Cape Town. For more information, send an e-mail to darryl.colenbrander@capetown.gov.za or visit City of Cape Town’s website at www.capetown.gov.za.

No tolerance for women and child abuse Today (25 November) marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism of no violence against women and children. It is also International Day of no violence against women.
The international campaign is in its 13th year and runs until 10 December, which is International Human Rights Day. The 16 Days of No violence against women and children aims to address the high incidence of, and to eliminate violence against women and children. The Helderberg Gazette took to the streets and asked readers what they think of the campaign.
Alicia Mqikela (Asanda Village): As a woman
with children I hope that we will never be violated or abused. Abuse in any form is unacceptable and a terrible experience to have.
Momeleza
Mhlungwani
(Blackheath):
These bad things that happen to children are not good for them. They have the right to a good and safe life, and to be educated. Those committing these crimes against women and children are not in a healthy state of mind.
Marshall Arendse (Macassar): People who
hurt their children like that have no heart. Offenders go to jail and get out after a short period and then just go back to committing the same crimes. Stricter laws and longer jail sentences should definitely be applied. PHOTOS: TAMSYN JANTJIES
Natasha Stoffels (Macassar): People who
abuse women and children should be sentenced to jail for 10 years or more without parole. Their sentences are too short, they get out of jail and do the same thing again and again. A crime is a crime and people must be punished.

Helderberg Omgee assists recovering addicts CASSY VAN EEDEN Helderberg Omgee is a halfway house and wellness centre for victims of trauma and men who have completed drug rehabilitation. It is located in Pinkster Park on the corner of Mondeor Road and the N2 in Somerset West. “We are alarmed at the social and moral decay in the Helderberg and feel compelled to utilise our expertise and extensive professional networks to make a difference in
people’s lives,” says Piet Maré, manager of Helderberg Omgee. Maré says the organisation was established in 2010 due to the alarming number of cases in the Helderberg with addicts tending to relapse after treatment. Helderberg Omgee aims to ensure a higher percentage of long-term recovery among recovering addicts in the area. The centre gives men, and soon women, of all ages the opportunity to recover fully before being reintegrated into the community. Helderberg Omgee is open to anyone recovering from drug addic-
tion, alcohol addiction or trauma. The centre can accommodate up to 15 people at present but the board is hoping to expand their facilities, with the help of the community, to soon be able to accommodate 25 residents at a time. Residents spend anywhere between two months and a year at Helderberg Omgee, says Maré, but this depends on the needs of the individual and their progress. Helderberg Omgee focuses on equipping residents with the necessary skills they need so that they can avoid relapsing.
Helderberg Omgee provides drug counsellors and other professional services, as well as balanced meals, aftercare, logistical support, social and life skills development, recreational activities, spiritual growth and career guidance to its residents. The non-profit organisation (NPO) is also focused on developing new and innovative programmes that aim at reducing drug use in local communities. Because the organisation is a
NPO, it relies on the generosity of the public to be able to provide these essential services. Helderberg Omgee is always in need of appliances, building material, furniture, linen and curtains. They are also currently asking for donations of bicycles so that they can take residents on bicycle rides. If you are able to make any donations please contact 073 329 0578 or helderbergomgee1@gmail.com. You can also visit their website: www.helderbergomgee.co.za.
The Helderberg Omgee team includes: Susan Reuter (nursing sister) , Alec Acavalos (fundraising), Janice van der Merwe (secretary), Glenda Spenenberg, Louis Smith (vice-chairperson), Ettienne Barnard (chairperson) and George Kellerman (financial officer).
Festival to light up the town The annual Somerset West Festival of Lights takes place this year from 3 to 6 December in Somerset West Main Road. The official launch of the festival will be on Wednesday 3 December and will start at 19:00. The programme will begin with a parade and will also in-
clude a music show. The official switching on of the Christmas lights will take place in the evening. Selected crafters, food and entertainment will be provided throughout the festival. For more information, visit the Festival of Lights Facebook Page.

Swimming lessons for Gr 1s In the aftermath of the tragic death of a Gr 1 learner of Sir Lowry’s Primary School, the Gr 1s are now being given swimming lessons. Livenkosi Magobolo (7), drowned on 30 October when he and four friends, also Gr 1, went to swim in the Bos-en-Dal dam in the village after school. It is believed that Livenkosi and another boy fell off a boat, and that Livenkosi failed to resurface. Police divers found his body at about 23:00 that night after his father Bukhosekhi Kuhle had filed a missing person report at the Sir
Lowry’s Pass police when Livenkosi did not return from school that day. A local resident, Ruth Kraus, decided after that to arrange for the Gr 1s to go for swimming lessons to try and prevent another tragedy like this occuring. The 170 Gr 1s now receive free swimming lessons at the Strand municipal pool three times a week. Kraus also arranges transport for the children to be able to attend the lessons. She says that she hopes Sir Lowry’s Pass will one day have a community swimming pool.

Every cake is a masterpiece JAMEY GORDON Chantelle Gleed (32) from Somerset West has had a passion for baking ever since she could remember. As a little girl she would nag her mom every school holiday to help her bake chocolate cookies from a recipe she found in a children’s book. Now she is finally living her passion. Chantelle has been baking in her spare time for years, but it was when she fell ill in June last year and was hospitalised after her lung collapsed, that she decided to pursue her dream of being a professional baker and cake decorator. “It was an eye opener. I realised that life was too short not to live a life you really love,” says Chantelle. The avid, self-taught baker previously worked as a tour operator and later assisted her husband, who is a boat broker, with administrative duties. In February this year, Chantelle enrolled in a six-week baking and cake decorating course at La Petite Patisserie to upskill herself. Upon completion of the course she decided to do her own thing, and so, in April Chantelle’s Cake Creations was launched. Chantelle specialises in baking and decorating wedding and novelty cakes, and cupcakes for all occasions. She believes in using quality ingredients and that her cakes need to look good, but taste even better. According to Chantelle there is nothing worse than a dry cake that lacks in taste and she has done a lot of recipe testing to ensure that her
Avid baker and cake decorator Chantelle Gleed piping one of the cakes that will be on exhibition at the world-famous Cake and Bake Show at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 29 and 30 November. PHOTO: JAMEY GORDON cakes taste great but stay moist and fresh. “My husband and family are tired of eating cake already, but I’ll have cake every day and even for breakfast,” laughs Chantelle. She creates cakes from her home in Saint Emilion Street in all sizes and with a variety of fillings. Her chocolate ganache cake is a winner among many, but the ultimate favourite is still her red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. For Chantelle baking a cake can
take anything from three to four hours. It can then takes her between four to 10 hours to decorate the cake. Chantelle says the most time she has spent decorating a cake was a week. This particular cake was a twotiered Frozen-themed castle cake with three figurines. She reckons she becomes a “real pain” when it comes to paying attention to detail and spending time perfecting the detailing on a cake. She recalls making the face of a figurine for a cake 16 times before it was perfect. “It might sound ridiculous, but in the end this is what sets me apart from the rest.” For Chantelle the satisfaction that comes with seeing her clients’ faces light up when they see her creation, justifies having to sit face down for hours on end during the creation process. The most challenging cake Chantelle had to make is a massive Louis Vuitton handbag that could survive a flight to Johannesburg. She says the strangest request for a cake to date, was a naked torso cake. “Even though I’m modest and oldfashioned and suggested a few ideas to cover the naked torso, it’s not about what I want but what the client wants.” Chantelle will be exhibiting a selection of beautifully designed cakes and cupcakes at the Cake and Bake Show at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Cake and Bake Show is a world-famous event in the United Kingdom that has now been brought to South Africa on 29 and 30 November.

The Strand Police were overwhelmed when they received a cake from the Loreto Primary School last week. The cake, as well as a letter of appreciation, was given to the police to thank them for the service they render to the school. The principal, Vanessa Oertle, personally delivered the cake to the police station’s commander, Col.

Paul Steyn, a Gordon’s Bay resident who lost part of his right leg, walked from Wellington to the V&A Waterfront using only his crutches. The walk is aptly named the Clutch on Crutch Walk and is in support of the many amputees in rural areas across the country who have only their crutches and walk long distances, Steyn said. Steyn started the Paul Steyn Foundation in 2011 for disadvantaged people who cannot afford to pay for prosthesis. Through his foundation he raises funds and awareness for amputees. Early next year, Paul plans to walk from Durban to Cape Town and on this walk he will be visiting community projects, missions and schools to talk to them about the work he does. The foundation will also identify people in need of prosthetics along this route. For further information on the foundation, visit www.paulsteynfoundation.org.za or phone 021 828 1993.

Learner wins Maths award
Strand Moslem Primary school recently entered the Amesa Mathematics Competition for the first time. Although a limited number of learners were entered, one of the school’s Grade 5 learners, Aqeel Isaacs won an award for his outstanding achievement. According to the organisers, over 11 000 learners entered the competition nationwide. The question papers were of a very high standard. Aqeel is one of only a handful of learners in the Helderberg to receive an award. According to one of the school’s maths teachers, Riyaad Rhoda, the school intends to enter more of its learners in 2015 in the hope that more of them will receive the prestigious award. The competition provides learners with the opportunity to test their mathematical skills and also develop a love for the subject. Rhoda also wishes to encourage maths teachers from other previously disadvantaged schools to enter the competition in 2015. According to him this type of exposure will mean the world to learners and could erase the negative attitude towards maths in general.

Echo’s family relationships workshop for first-year students was recently held as part of their life skills programme. From left are: Welcome Masoka, Massa Matshayana, Kirsten De Reuck, Leila Falletisch (course presenter_, Bronwyn de Morney and Lincoln Barnabas.
Echo prepares students for the world of work
The EDP is presented over a three-year period. First year students are taught basic skills like time management while seniors are more focused on what to expect in the workplace. They are also trained in CV and interview skills as well as business etiquette. All these students are taken to the theatre, art museums and galleries regularly. A highlight is the annual Diversity Weekend where various topics such as gender and sexual orientation and religious beliefs are discussed.
The Echo Development Programme (EDP) has prepared many students for the working world. Thirty of the 33 students have been placed in positions in their chosen career. The three other students are currently studying towards their masters degrees. Des McLeod, director of the organisation, says it is important for students to stand out above many other candidates who will also apply for the same position.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among South African men. One in 23 SA men who reach the age of 74 will develop prostate cancer, while testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged between 15 and 39. More than 90% of men with testicular cancer survive the disease, while many men live with prostate cancer for the rest of their lives. According to The Cancer Association of
SA (Cansa), one in four South Africans will be affected by cancer through diagnosis of the disease, and more than 100 000 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Early prostate cancer signs to look out for: See a doctor regarding any of the following symptoms: ) Difficulty urinating or starting and stopping the urinary stream ) Need to urinate frequently ) Pain or burning when urinating ) Blood in urine ) Pain in the lower back and thighs Detecting testicular cancer: Aged between 15 and 40: examine testicles each month for lumps. Over 50: go for an annual prostate examination and a blood test.
Safety tips for the festive season The City of Cape Town is currently working to implement its Festive Season Readiness Plan. They are appealing to residents to be aware of the following tips to ensure a safe and incident-free festive season. ) Report all emergencies to the 107 Public Emergency Call Centre. Dial 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone. ) Only swim in designated bathing areas, which will be indicated by yellow and red flags positioned by lifeguards. Always obey lifeguards’ instructions. ) Pay close attention to the shark warning system of the shark spotters and always follow the instructions of the lifeguards on duty. ) Discard cigarette butts properly and put out braai fires or open flames to minimise the risk of runaway fires.
) In and around the home, switch off all electrical appliances after use and limit children’s access to matches and lighters. ) In summer there is a higher incidence of diarrhoeal disease. Washing your hands before preparing food and after toilet use, ensuring that food is prepared in hygienic conditions and kept refrigerated, as well as keeping flies away from prepared food, are some of the measures that should be taken to prevent diarrhoeal disease. ) Residents who will be away on holiday should ensure that they visit their local health facility to obtain their vital medication. Alternatively, their appointment cards can be taken with them so that the local primary health care clinic closest to their holiday destination can be accessed.

ONTWRIGTING VAN WATERVOORSIENING: BIZWENI (SOMERSET-WES) Dinsdag 2 Desember 2014

Christmas celebration made easy
It is that time of year again, when families begin planning their Christmas celebrations.
However, entertaining family and friends can be expensive and stressful as Christmas lunch can be one of the bigger expenses over the festive season. Helderberg Gazette shares a few money saving tips to make your Christmas lunch special: ) Plan ahead of time. Write out your menu for the meal from beginning to end, then make a list of each and every ingredient you will need. Cross out the ingredients you already have and this leaves you with a thorough grocery list. Having a pre-planned list will save you money buying ingredients you are not sure you will need or have. ) Buy a bit at a time. Start buying your ingredients whenever you see something on special or when you have the cash to do so. Stash it away so no one else in the house finds it. This means you will be less financially drained than if you shop a few days before Christmas.
. Place the leg in a baking dish and fill up to 2 cm with water. . Bake for 1½ hours. Baste every 20 minutes, but be careful not to burn it. . Add the mustard to the remaining glaze and pour over the cooked pork slices at the table. Perfect roast potatoes - R 15 (serves 4) Ingredients: . 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered - R 9 (R 10/kg) . 4 tablespoons (± 60 ml) olive oil (R 50 for 500 ml) . pinch of salt Method: Preheat your oven to 190°C and warm an oven-proof dish while you prepare the potatoes. . Place peeled potatoes in a saucepan and cover them with cold water. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes. . Drain the potatoes well in a colander, shaking them for a few seconds to fluff them up at the edges. . Carefully arrange the potatoes in the dish, baste them with hot oil.
crumbs, herbs, egg and seasoning, and mix well to bind the mixture together. . Loosely stuff the neck end of the chicken with half the stuffing, pushing it well up inside to make a neat shape. . Fold the flap of skin underneath and secure with a toothpick. . Put the lemon quarters in the cavity of the bird and tie the legs together with kitchen string. . Put the remaining stuffing in a small, lightly buttered dish and cook for the last 30 minutes of the cooking time. . Place the chicken, breast-side down, on a rack in a roasting tray. Pour about 250 ml water under the rack. This creates steam and helps to keep the bird moist. It will also collect the juices that drip down during cooking and can be used for making the gravy. . Roast for 30 minutes. . Remove the tray from the oven and carefully turn the chicken over so it is now breast-side up. Rub the remaining olive oil over the breast and season. . Reduce the oven tem-
Roast chicken is a cheaper meat dish for Christmas if you are not able to buy lamb or pork. Adding a twist with a lemon and herb stuffing will have mouths watering.
A roast pork leg is an ideal way to feed a group of people for a Christmas lunch or dinner. Using cheap ingredients you can make a beautifully glazed leg which you can then slice and serve. Roast vegetables are a quick and easy side dish for any Christmas meal.
Glazed pork leg - R 185 (feeds four) Ingredients: . 1 cooked pork leg - (R70 per kilogram) . 1 tin of apricot jam - (R 13 for 450 g) . 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon - (R 17 for 40 g) . ¾ cup of brown sugar - (R 6 for 500 g) . ½ cup of dry sherry - (R 28 for 750 ml) . 2 tablespoons wholegrain mustard - (R 30 for 156g) . ¼ cup cloves - (R 27 for 26g) Method: . Score a diamond pattern into the outside of the pork and stud cloves into the criss-cross junctions. . Sprinkle cinnamon all over. . Preheat the oven to 200 °C. . In a small saucepan, heat the jam with a few tablespoons of the sherry to thin it out. . Spread about half of this mix over the top of the pork leg and press the brown sugar over the glaze generously. Make sure that the sugar is pressed into all the gaps.
Sprinkle over some salt and roast for an hour, turning them every 20 minutes until crisp. Herb-stuffed chicken - R 108 (serves 4) Ingredients: . 1 large whole chicken - (± R60) . 1 lemon, cut into quarters - R6 . 25 g butter (R15 for 250g) . 2 tsp olive oil (R 50 for 500 ml) . 1 onion, finely chopped - R2 at R 7 p/kg) . 2 celery sticks, finely chopped - (R13 per bunch) . 100 g fresh white breadcrumbs - (make your own using stale bread) . 3 tsp mixed herbs - (R18 per 100 g) . 1 egg, beaten (R 11 for ½ dozen) . salt and freshly ground black pepper Method: . Preheat your oven to 220°C. . Make the stuffing by gently heating the butter and one tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the onion and celery for 10 minutes, until soft. . Remove from the heat and tip into a bowl. Stir in the bread-
perature to 150°C. . Roast the chicken for a further 90 minutes, basting it every 20 minutes with the juices in the tin until it is cooked through. . Tip the bird up slightly so any lemony juices inside the cavity run into the tray. . Remove the chicken, cover with foil and allow to stand for 10 – 15 minutes before carving. . Meanwhile, make the gravy by blending the flour with a little water in a jug to make a paste. . Gradually stir in the roasting juices, then pour into a saucepan. Add the stock and wine or apple juice, bring to the boil, stirring until smooth and thickened. . Season to taste, then pour into a gravy jug. Roasted mixed vegetables (R30 pre-packed or ±R100 if made up by yourself (serves 6) Ingredients: . You can either purchase a prepacked variety of roasting vegetables at most supermarkets at around R 30 or you can choose your own combination. . Celery - (R13 per bunch) . 1 onion - R2 (R 7 per kg)
Roast potatoes, when done right, are the perfect side dish to any Christmas meal. Potatoes are cheap and filling. . 2 sweet peppers of your choice - R20 (for a pack of two) . 1 kg carrots - R5 (per kilogram) . 1 butternut - R7 (R 11 per kilogram) . 1 head of broccoli - R20 (per punnet) . 1 head of cauliflower - R20 (per punnet) . 200g baby marrows (per punnet) . 2 tablespoon olive oil - R3 (R 50 for 500 ml) . Salt and pepper . Avoid using mushrooms and potatoes in the mixture as these re-
lease water into the dish. Cook these separately if you want to include them. Method: . Cut each vegetable into chunks. . In a glass oven-safe dish, place the vegetables that you want to be crispy at the bottom, such as onions, celery and peppers and then spread the rest of the vegetables on top of this. Sprinkle olive oil all over the vegetables and roast in your oven for about 30 minutes at 200°C. Toss the mixture once, halfway through cooking time.
