Award questioned NICOLE MCCAIN Constable Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for the Somerset West police station, was recently awarded the accolade of policewoman of the year in the Western Cape. But now allegations that the award was given to the wrong person are doing the rounds – and the police say that while they’ll investigate, numerous factors were considered in giving Jantjies this coveted honour. Gazette received an email to say that Jantjies had been nominated for her work at Tiny Bubbles crèche in Chris Nissan Park – which, the writer alleged, Jantjies claimed to have funded with her money. The project, started as a way to give back to the community on Madiba’s birthday, was a combined effort between the women of the Somerset West police, the local CPF and other non-profit organisations. They replaced the roof and donated food, stationery and mattresses. The principal of Tiny Bubbles, Sandra Manuels, says she only met Jantjies at the crèche once, but that Jantjies could have been the one who arranged for the police to visit her crèche. Colonel Mary Anne Williams says the award was not based on the Tiny Bubbles project solely, but on Jantjies’ overall performance. Elaborating, Williams says Jantjies is the Tiny Bubbles project coordinator, and was involved in the outreach from the start. “She never said she’d done it out of her own pocket. All the women at the station made donations.” Williams adds that her nomina-

tion came from the women of the Khayelitsha Cluster, and that Jantjies did not nominate herself. “The cluster compiled a report, as I did,” says Williams. Jantjies was judged in these reports, which assessed her day-today duties, her interaction with the media, and her interaction with the community. When asked what the criteria were for awarding the policewoman of the year award, provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut declined to answer. He acknowledges, though, that a complaint was received regarding Jantjies’ award. But, he says, the accolade was not awarded for her involvement at the Tiny Bubbles crèche, as the complaint suggested; elaborating, he adds that “when a candidate is presented with an award, many factors are considered during an internal process so that we can be assured that the most appropriate person is chosen”. “These same criteria were applied when awarding constable Jantjies.” But the police will look into it, he says. Williams says she is launching an investigation into the matter. A source at the station speculates that the complaint may have come from one of Jantjies’ colleagues who was jealous of the award. ) Jantjies was approached for comment but referred the Gazette to the police’s provincial media service.

Victoria’s dream NICOLE MCCAIN The Umnqophiso Pre-primary School in Lwandle, established in 1996, has occupied their current school building for almost ten years now, but each day is still a challenge, says school principal Victoria Mangqwengqwe. The 47-year-old mother of four has dedicated the last 15 years to changing the education landscape in her community by starting the first pre-primary school. “There were just crèches before, but nothing that focused on school readiness,” says Victoria. For the first three years, neither she nor her fellow teachers earned a salary, and they had to wait six years before they could have a building of their own. “It’s been a long, long journey,” she says. The Gazette talked to Victoria about why she still continues to educate young minds. What is your involvement in the community? I run the Umnqophiso Pre-primary School in Lwandle, which I start-

ed in 1996. We now have six classes, where we prepare children for primary school. We are a role model, and have received awards from the education department. I use this to help other schools in the areas with training and development, such as planning their classes. Our school also works with parents, to offer them support and encourage them to participate in their children’s education. We also make our classrooms available to a group of women who get together to sew, as well as run projects that empower young girls. What inspires you? I take my inspiration from the support of the parents. I saw a need for a pre-primary school in the community, and parents came forward with donations and support. I’m also motivated by the progress my students make. Some of the pupils who were in my very first classes are now at university. In fact, some of them are completing their training here at my school. Why did you choose to become a teacher? It wasn’t my first choice for a career. I wanted a career in science.

Victoria Mangqwengqwe’s dream is that, with the support of her community, Umnqophiso Pre-primary School will grow beyond the six classes of Grade R pupils she currently accommodates. Photo’s: NICOLE McCAIN Unfortunately, I didn’t have the finances for that, so I chose education instead. I felt that it’s important to uplift the standard of education, because it’s the mother of all careers. To make our country better, we have to educate our children. What challenges does you community face? The competition between the various schools can be quite a challenge. We, at Umnqophiso, try not to lose focus, and follow our goals. It’s about the children.

There is also the problem that many of the parents are young and still in school. They can’t cope and fully be part of their children’s education. We offer support to our parents, guiding them through assisting their children and explaining why their children’s education is important. Unemployment is also a challenge. Parents have to pay R100 per month in school fees, which many can’t afford. We often have to ask for donations or sponsorships to

Victoria Mangqwengqwe with her Grade R pupils at Umnqophiso Pre-primary School in Lwandle. help the parents. How would you like to see your community in the future? I would love to see my school growing. Even long after I’m gone! I want to see it fulfilling the dreams of the children. I’d also like to see the parents and community giving their long term support to the school and similar projects.

Colour our town beautiful . . . NICOLE MCCAIN The City of Cape Town is repainting the fencing on Main Road after a public outcry at their choice of colours. Councillor Tandeka Gqada, mayoral committee member of community services for the City, says that comments were received after an article printed in the Gazette on 5 June, prompting the change of heart. “Comments received were that the trial colours (i.e. the colours on the City’s official logo) were too bright and that the wooden railings were outdated and should be replaced with urban installations,” says Gqada. She added these comments allowed the city to identify a need for Somerset West to be modernised without compromising the historic values of the town, and that the wooden railings will be painted in the original dark green colour and any future upgrades will be considered in a holistic manner. The fence is being painted as part of an upgrade of traffic islands in Somerset West and will, where necessary, be repaired or replaced. As part of the upgrade, the planting of succulents is also planned. The Gazette approached residents for their thoughts on the colour choice for the fence PHOTOS: .Nicole McCain

Greg Snyman says he supports the painting of the fences. “I think it’s cool. I don’t know what all the fuss is about. At least they’re doing something and upgrading the town. Let them paint the fences, for goodness sake!”

“I love the present colours. It’s the same colours as our flag.” says Mvuysi Mkondweni. He adds that the bright colours help drivers. “Yellow is a good colour for drivers to see, like the line on the road.”

Liberty Kuda can’t understand why anyone would complain about the colour of the fencing. “But the colours are nice! They must carry on. Green, red and yellow blend well together. If people want it to be a different colour, they must suggest something better.”

Fatima Mncendi approves of the colour choice. “It’s fine. It’s bright and easy for people to see.” She thinks that those who are complaining are overreacting. “They don’t know what they want. They’re complaining for nothing.”

Lizzy Simundze thinks the colours brighten up the street. “It looks very nice. Why is everyone complaining? Maybe I’m wrong, but it looks nice to me.”

Abby Engelbrecht dislikes the new colour scheme. “When they started painting the fencing at the top of the road, I freaked out. The town looks a mess. I’m very happy for it to stay green and white, and they should repaint the ones in the bright colours.”

Network identifies goals

Three-year-old Asemahle Sofana tucks into the meal given to her mother, Thabisa. The Gift of the Givers Foundation made 2 500 meals for the event.

Meals, gifts for 2 500 NICOLE MCCAIN Residents of Lwandle received a little extra warmth when the Gift of the Givers Foundation visited the community last Tuesday. Simanyene High School was transformed as the foundation’s 18-wheeler truck filled the school’s yard and the crowd jostled at the gate to get inside. The gates eventually had to be locked to control the crowd. The volunteers prepared 2 500 warm meals for the community, as well as distributing blankets. “Everyone here today gets a warm meal and a blanket,” said Gawa Sayed, speaking on behalf of Gift of the Givers. The community filled the school hall, with thousands waiting for the steaming meal of chicken stew and rice. The elderly and disabled were given a food parcel, with 71-year-old

Rose Skepi and 90-year-old Tlaleng Mothebe receiving the first blankets and food parcels. The rest of the community received either a detergent or a hygiene parcel. In addition, pupils were given a small parcel of sweets and other treats. The event forms part of the Gift of the Giver’s Winter Warmth Project, which distributes meals to needy areas throughout the province. Sayed says she personally visits the areas beforehand to ensure the food is given to those who most need it. The project has been running for three years, and last year the foundation distributed 15 500 meals throughout the Western Cape, says Sayed.

The Helderberg Local Network of Care held their first workshop on 8 and 9 June. The network was started as part of the City of Cape Town’s initiative to be a city that cares, and is an umbrella organisation which allows community and charity organisations to work together, says chairperson Francis Lukas. There are 12 local networks of care, according to Councellor Beverley Cortje-Alcock, mayoral committee member of social development and early childhood development for the City of Cape Town. According to Cortje-Alcock, the local networks of care were started to get communities involved in preventing persons at risk from migrating onto the streets, as well as support rehabilitated people in being re-integrated into their communities. Lukas says the workshop helped the network to identify three objectives: to create a database of people living on the streets, along with the services they receive; to ensure that everyone gets the services they need and that there is no duplication and to focus on skills development and unemployment, as well as identifying community workers and encouraging them in their work. The network is made up of various non-profit organisations in the area, including Oasis, Hearts of Men and the Somerset West Night Shelter.

The workshop was attended by Francis Lukas (chairperson), Enrico Erasmus from Shalom Church, Ruben Dames (vice chairperson), Wayne Stammer from the Somerset West Night Shelter, Nicholas Petersen from the NGO House of Light, Phumza Ncwaba, Shaun Phillips from Hearts of Men, Gertruida Hendricks from Oasis and the workshop facilitator, Trevor Pedro.

The two-day workshop saw the Helderberg Local Network of Care identifying the aspects they plan to focus on. Here are (front from left) Gertruida Hendricks, project coordinator, Ruben Dames, vice chairperson, Phumza Ncwaba, Francis Lukas, chairperson; (back row) Heather Finch and Marlise Erasmus.

Christmas comes early The construction of a new primary school in Nomzamo is almost done, with the education department estimating the building will be finished this month. The school, with the proposed name of Christmas Tinto Primary School, will cater to around 800 pupils from the start of the third term on 16 July. The pupils will be moved from ACJ Pakade, after which renovations of the school building there will begin. Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for Western

Cape Education MEC Donald Grant, says the department will supply the school with the relevant learning materials, as well as furniture and equipment, after construction has been completed. She adds that the school will be staffed by 21 teachers, of whom 13 will come from ACJ Pakade Primary. The department will recruit the rest, including the new acting principal and deputy principal. Grant is reported to have said that, by 2013, 26 new schools will be built in the province to accommodate over 57 000 pupils.

Ek dink Carte Blanche moet begin ondersoek instel.

Why was Deepfreeze land resold? I am delighted to hear that the eviction of Deepfreeze people has been withdrawn, but my question is. Why was their land bought by others if Deepfreezing and Preserving (Edms) Bpk bought it for them in 1956? It sounds very misleading and confusing, because it was theirs in the first place, wasn’t it? Or was it also one of those issues when “coloured people” could not have anything for free. As I understand your article,: “die grond is in 1956 vir hul werkers gekoop”. Veels geluk aan die mense van Deepefreeze. Julle verdien dit. G. Meyer

My pa was baie spesiaal Ek is seker my vader, hadj Gasant Cassiem, word steeds regoor die Strand en Macassar onthou.

Marching for child safety The Strand saw children marching for their safety at the begining of the month, as part of Child Protection Week. Badisa Strand held a march on 1 June, where pupils from Rusthof and Dr J.G. Joubert primary schools marched through the streets of Rusthof area to make the community aware of child protection. The following day, Lwandle children took to the streets as part the awareness week, to call for the community to protect their rights. Pupils from Umnqophhiso, ACJ Pakade and Solomon Qatyana Primary Schools marched with the support of the Lwandle police, the department of social development, the ACVV and the NGO, Patch.

Macassar’s youngsters shine The Macassar Youth Rugby Club’s (MYRC) teams emerged unscathed from their matches against rugby clubs from Masiphumelele and Schotse Kloof earlier this month. This means that all the MYRC teams remain unbeaten this season – and spokesperson and coach Joseph Noble says the boys are determined to maintain this. On Youth Day, Saturday 16 June, the u.9 B team scored an impressive 50–0 win over Masiphumelele rugby Club in Noordhoek. Try scorers were Bradley Damon (two), Emile Anthony, Matthew Louw, Hershell Simons, Sherman Manuel, Rial Barends, Junior Mbata and Byron Klein (one try each). The u.9 A-team won their game 15–0. James Konstabel, Charles Christians and Antonio Mercuur scored a try each. MYRC’s u.11 team won their match 27–0. Try–scorers were Lance Hartnick, Jaden Pieterse, Antonio Haas (plus a conversion), Adriaan Lendor and Eathan Moses. The u.13 A-team won their game 27–10, with Markwin Jacobs scoring two tries and Darren Hendricks, Denavan Wenn and Vontonio Johnson scoring one try a piece. Darren Hendricks kicked one conversion. During MYRC’s matches against

The Macassar Youth Rugby Club’s successful u.11 A-team Schotse Kloof at Green Point on 9 June, the u.9s won their game 35–15. Try scorers were Karriem Booysen (three), Gavin Bok (two) and James Konstabel and Shermon Manual (one try each). The u.11s, meanwhile, claimed their game 12–0. Try scorers were Joshua van Heerden and Shirwin Smith, while Antonio Haas was successful with one conversion.

MYRC’s u.13 team drew 12–12. The try scorers were Brendan Pretorius and Werner Davids (one each), while Markwin Jakobs succeeded with one conversion. Joseph thanked Daniels Transport for transporting the teams to Noordhoek, and the parents who helped transporting the boys. For more information about the MYRC contact Joseph on 083 505 2854.
