Schoolboy killed in gang attack NICOLE MCCAIN
The death of a Grade 10 pupil of Simanyene High School in Nomzamo sparked a peaceful protest by pupils, teachers and community members who wanted to speak out against a spike in gang-related violence among teenagers in the area. The Grade 10 boy was stabbed in Nomzamo on Saturday 16 March, allegedly by a group of boys belonging to a gang in the area, says Lwandle police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama. He says the boy was stabbed in the back and chest, and police who attended the scene found him dead, lying in a pool of blood. Simanyene High then held a march on Thursday 21 March. Although the stabbing did not happen at school, the principal at Simanyene High, Monwabisi Matshoba, says the march was initiated by school management because the school “couldn’t just stand there while our children are dying”. Two suspects, aged 16 and 18, have been arrested on charges of murder. Both suspects appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 20 March, and the 16-year-old has been temporarily placed in a place of safety. The older suspect will remain in police custody until a new date of appearance is set by the court, says Gama. In November last year, the Gazette
reported on concerns raised by school principals over the increase in gangsterism among pupils. Eric Titipane, principal at Khanyolwethu High School, said at the time that there are two rival gangs at his school, and estimated that between 40 and 50 pupils are involved. Matshoba estimates about 40 pupils of Simanyene, most of them boys around the age of 16, are involved in gangs. According to Gama, the gangs appear to be territorial, making it difficult for youngsters to move from one area to another. “They won’t be able to go from Lwandle to Asanda Village or Nomzamo,” Gama explains. In an attempt to curb the gangsterism, the Lwandle police has held a series of public meetings, and also visited schools to educate pupils on the dangers involved in gangsterism. After the recent stabbing, the community set up a task team to tackle the problem. Xolani Dilifo, member of the task team, says they are not certain why gangs have taken off in the area. “We’ve identified 549 boys and 79 girls in 11 gangs. But we can’t get to the core of it. It could be drugs, girls or even outside influences from Khayelitsha or Gugulethu.” Dilifo says gangs flourish due to a lack of after-school activities. “We’re looking at projects to keep the youth busy, and we’re submitting a programme to the City of Cape Town for funding. We’re also in talks with MEC for Community Safety, Dan Plato.”

SAY NO TO ABUSE: The Macassar Community Policing Forum and Child Welfare gathered on the Kramat Road in Macassar on Thursday. The demonstration, held on Human Rights Day, was organised to create awareness among passing motorists of child abuse.
Mother in court for neglect A 28-year-old mother has appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on a charge of child neglect. The woman was arrested by the Lwandle police after community members alerted social workers to a four-year-old boy who had been left alone at home. According to concerned neighbours, the child had been living alone for some time and they often saw him playing alone outside without supervision. Social workers found the child playing outside alone and in a bad state of neglect, says Lwandle police spokesperson Constable Mthokozisi Gama.
Arrested woman ‘did not want to live’ NICOLE MCCAIN A Sir Lowry’s Pass family is struggling to make sense of the death of grandchild Bernadine Johannes (19), who committed suicide in a police vehicle on Sunday (17 March). According to her grandmother, Anna Johannes, Bernadine and her boyfriend fought late on Sunday night. Anna was called to the house Bernadine shared with him. On arrival, the boyfriend’s brother had been cut on the cheek. Somerset West police spokesperson Suzan Jantjies says the woman was arrested for riotous behaviour after stabbing two men with a broken piece of mirror, and then placed in a police vehicle. “When they arrived at the Somerset West police station the arresting officer noticed that the suspect had her shoe strings around her neck and was dead.” Anna says Bernadine had told her that she did not want to live, but she thought Bernadine was just upset and had been drinking.
The child is currently in foster care and will remain there until the case has been finalised. The woman appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 13 March and was released on R500 bail. Gama says, “Police maintain zero tolerance against individuals abandoning children alone. “The community are hereby requested to report such incidents to the police and social workers.” Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation can contact the Lwandle police station at 021 845 2094.

Easter – a very special time
HAVE YOUR SAY!
With Easter just around the corner, the Gazette spoke to a group of grade 2 pupils from Somerset West Primary about eggs, bunnies and all things Easter.
UPGRADING OF STRAND PAVILION (JETTY) PRECINCT
You are cordially invited to attend an open day where information will be shared about the City’s draft plans to upgrade the Strand pavilion (jetty) precinct. The open day takes place as follows: Date: Venue: Time:
Tuesday 26 March 2013 Function Room, Municipal Building, Strand 16:00 to 17:00 Plans available for inspection 17:00 to 17:30 Presentation by officials 17:30 to 18:00 Questions
As this is an important development for the Strand CBD, your presence and input would be highly appreciated.
Sebastian Forward says his family celebrates Easter for religious reasons. “We celebrate Easter because Jesus died on the cross for us. We eat lots of Easter eggs to celebrate.”
Dis lekker.” FOTO’S: NICOLE MCCAIN
ACHMAT EBRAHIM CITY MANAGER 54/2013
Cassidy Booyens says Easter eggs form a big part of her celebration. “We get Easter eggs because we celebrate by giving gifts. The Easter bunny hides my Easter eggs for me.”
Jason Greenbaum is an ardent believer in the Easter bunny. “Every time it’s Easter, we find some eggs. But my mom and my grandmother always have the same amount of money, so it can’t come from them. And I’ve seen the Easter bunny. He was yellow and his bottom was sticking out of a hole. He was stuck, but he popped through.”
“The best part of Easter is having fun,” says Taariq Adonis. “Like when we find Easter eggs in the garden or the house. I usually get about ten, and eat them all in one day.”

Reader SMSes Social grant queues ) It is sad that our government thinks nothing of our pensioners, some who can barely walk, to make them stand in long queues for their pension. The bank transfer was a better and safer option.
– Neither Neighbourhood Watch nor Helderberg Crime Watch (HCW) are politically orientated and at all times operate strictly within the confines of the law. To say that Neighbourhood Watch and HCW are not having an impact is a very misaligned statement and I can assure you that the community members involved in Neighbourhood Watch and the patrollers involved with HCW as a non-profit organisation do have an impact on crime. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, we can not attend to every incident of crime as it happens. We have to prioritise and focus on the more serious cases as they occur. We fulfil our role based purely on subscriptions received from our HCW subscribers as well as supplying a service to Neighbourhood Watches on patrol via our 24/7 staffed Control Room and the on-duty HCW manned vehicles. Only by increasing the HCW subscriber numbers will we be able to put more vehicles on the road to further assist in reducing crime in our community, and the cost involved is minimal. - Samantha Paris, Helderberg Crime Watch

Indien jy kan help, bel Josephs by 021 854 9117.

Better way to help homeless
Savemore Meat Market believes in quality products and excellent service from employees (from left) Ikraam Sauls, Cindy Visage, Ghairoe Gallie, Sydney Mataga, Tania Tizoro, Natasha Schritten and Omar Latief.
Real meat at Savemore While many South Africans have been rocked after hearing that their meat may contain other animal products, Helderberg residents can rest assured that they can purchase excellent quality meat on their very doorstep. Savemore Meat Market in Macassar is relaunching all their meat products and inviting locals to sample their products at an event on Saturday 30 March – with the promise their meat is 100% pure. “Our business is based on trust and transparency,” says owner Nezaam Sonday. “Our customers are able ask to see the fridges and how we do things.” Sonday says Savemore Meat Market, which also has a branch in Strand, adheres to strict hygiene standards and strives to maintain a cold chain, which ensuring their customers a longer shelf life on their meat. “We offer special discounts for bulk buyers, restaurants, shops and take-aways,”says Sonday. Sonday says he will never serve a customer something he is unwilling to eat. This philosophy has been part of the Muslim-owned and managed store since its opening in 2002, and all the meat is Halaal. Sonday says it’s this willingness to engage with the community that is the secret to his
business’ success. “We’re a community-based business and we’ve become a household name. We support local soup kitchens and religious institutions, as well as the local sports club.” The store also offers quality products and hands-on service, and according to Sonday, this is why many customers travel from as far as Stellenbosch, Somerset West and Strand to buy meat from Savemore Meat Market. Now, as a way to reassure his customers, Sonday will host Saturday’s event to re-launch their meat products with the focus on sausages and burgers. Held outside the store in Kabeljou Street, a meat technician and food technologist from spice supplier Freddy Hirsch will be on hand to braai and offer customers tasting samples. There will also be several competitions on the day, with prizes to be won. Savemore will also be giving away 2l cooldrinks to the first 150 customers with purchases over R100 on Saturday. For more information, contact Savemore in Macassar, on the corner of Kabeljou and Fish Streets, on 021 8572786 or info@savemore.co.za. Customers can also visit the Strand store at 16 Lower Gordon’s Bay Road or contact 021 853 8203.
Dawn Pogenpoel hands out pamphlets for the Give Responsibly campaign The City of Cape Town’s Give Responsibly campaign kicked off on Wednesday 20 March with an awareness drive at traffic lights in Somerset West. According to subcouncil 08 chairperson Stuart Pringle, the message behind the campaign is that “hand-outs given directly to street people sustain a deeply damaging lifestyle on the streets”. Pringle says, “Living on the streets is not a crime, but it is a dangerous and undignified lifestyle which is encouraged by people who, with the best of intentions, give directly to street people while the NGOs and churches struggle with limited budgets to re-integrate street people into the community.” Instead of giving directly to people living on the street, Helderberg residents can pur-
chase vouchers from Life Church and Helderberg Crime Watch, which will entitle the bearer to a meal and shower at the Somerset West night shelter, and a bed if there is capacity. Residents looking to donate can do so by contacting the Local Network of Care, an umbrella body for non-profit organisations in the area, or organisations working directly with street people. Contact the following to donate directly to a non-profit organisation: Local Network of Care: Francis Lukas at 0769328858. Somerset West night shelter: Jo Swart at 0820417328. Oasis Assessment Centre: Getruida Hendricks at 0714075096. Helderberg Street People’s Centre: Ian Greer at 0218516714.

Macassar and Beaumont unite The Macassar football club received a donation of over 60 pairs of soccer boots from the players of Young Bafana Beaumont Soccer Academy at Beaumont Primary.
The Macassar football club received a donation of over 60 pairs of soccer boots.
The donation was made after Beaumont coordinator Bernd Steinhage ran a drive to collect second-hand boots from his players. “After the official hand-over we played three matches against Macassar FC.” “The chairman of Macassar
FC said that they are delighted about the boots and that the club will hang on to them and only allow the dedicated players to make use of them,” said Steinhage. He added, “We look forward to working together with them in the future in order to raise funds and assist with materials and equipment where possible.” Anyone willing to assist with this initiative, is requested to contact Steinhage on 074 2683 628 or sned email to berndsteinhag@gmail.com.
