A start to an end of the bucket system ASHRAF BOOLEY Many communities in informal settlements in the Helderberg live in harsh conditions and still have inadequate sanitation. The City of Cape Town started its roll-out of portable flush toilets (PFTs) in Sir Lowry’s Pass yesterday, handing out over 460 PFTs to residents in informal areas that include Riemvasmaak and Rastakamp.

Charles Barbers from Rastakamp is happy about the portable flush toilet he has received for his home.

This is the start of an initiative aimed at eradicating the bucket system that is still found in many informal settlements in the Helderberg. The portable flush toilets consist of two removable containers which are able to flush and will be serviced three times a week. According to Ward 100 councillor Johan Middleton, recipients may use the portable flush toilets inside their homes. Many residents indicated that they intend to erect a separate structure next to their homes for its use. The PFTs have to be filled with 20 litres of water to facilitate flushing after it is has been used. The PFTs can be placed outside on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for Sannicare to clean. “Portable flush toilets will be provided to all those who accept them,” said councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayco member for Utility Services at the City of Cape Town. Marlene Lakay from Riemvasmaak in Sir Lowry’s Pass says she is very happy to get a PFT. “I’ve been living in Sir Lowry’s Pass for eight years and finally things will be much easier with the portable flush toilets in place,” says Lakay. “It’s indescribable. The new toilets will make a big difference in our lives and our environment. Sometimes we had to wake up at night when people came to clean the toilets,” says André October from Riemvasmaak. Not all residents of Sir Lowry’s Pass’ informal settlements received portable flush toilets yesterday. According to Middleton, more toilets will be rolled out in the area soon. “A total number of 562 PFTs will be rolled out to Rastakamp, including the other informal settlements within Sir Lowry’s Pass,” says Sonnenberg. According to Sonnenberg residents of Morkel’s Cottage will also receive portable flush

Residents of informal settlements in Sir Lowry’s Pass flocked to the local community hall where City officials handed out portable flush toilets. toilets today. Residents said they are currently making use of the 64 bucket toilets in the area. In Morkel’s Cottage, some residents feel that an upgrade is long overdue because bucket toilets pose a health risk to them. “It’s disgusting. At first, it wasn’t very dirty. Now that there are people cleaning the toilets, residents throw their waste all over the place,” says Monica Brocks, a resident of Morkel’s Cottage and who also works for Sannicare. According to Brocks, the bucket toilets also pose a safety hazard to children. “During the strike, Sannicare randomly

picked up people in the area to clean the toilets. At night, they dropped the buckets because they didn’t know how to clean it properly, leaving waste strewn all over the area.” Brocks said that when children went to play outside they would trip and fall over the bucket toilets. According to Sonnenberg, further PFT rollouts will start once a consultation has taken plavce with communities and after a beneficiary list has been compiled. The timing of the roll-outs depends on this, he said.

Hiking for health

A group of Strand residents joined the Ansar Al Masakin Foundation on a hike along the Skeleton Gorge hiking trail on Table Mountain on Saturday 25 May. Shabier Chotia, secretary and a founder of the foundation, says the organisation aims to produce healthy, contributing members of society through awareness programmes that are designed to improve their physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing.

Our children are not safe Altogether 482 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in the Helderberg from April 2012 to March 2013. This is according to Ada Buys, unit manager for Patch, the Helderberg’s centre for child sexual abuse. Statistics such as these are a shocking and stark reality in our country. It makes it imperative for all members of the community to play a role in caring for and protecting our country’s children. National Child Protection Week kicked off yesterday (27 May) and will continue until Sunday 2 June, raising awareness around children’s rights. Our constitution emphasises that children should be protected against abuse, neglect, degradation and maltreatment. The reality is, however, that the rights of many children in the country are being violated on a daily basis. Child Welfare SA Helderberg often comes across child neglect and abuse. Adelé Zeelie, social worker at Child Welfare SA, Helderberg, says child abuse often occurs when children are in foster care and also to those who drop out of school. In Lwandle child neglect and missing children are reported to the station on a regular basis, says Const Mthokosisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle police. It is the responsibility of the community to lend a hand in creating a safe environment for children. This should not only be done during National Child Protection Week, but everyday.

Is jou kind veilig ‘aanlyn’?

Helpful tips to protect your Facebook profile Here are some helpful tips that you can follow to ensure tight security on your online Facebook profile and away from prying eyes: 1. Control who can see your profile: Set your profile to “only my friends” under the privacy settings tab. Facebook allows all of your networks and all of your friends to be able to view your profile by default. As networks can contain thousands of people, personal information is revealed

to anyone if you leave this option at its default setting. 2. Think carefully about who you allow to become your friend: Once you have accepted someone as your friend, they will be able to access a lot of information about you that you have marked as viewable by your friends. 3. Show limited friends: You can choose to make people “limited friends” who only have access to a partial version of your profile. This can be useful if you have associates who you do not wish to give full friend status to

or who you feel uncomfortable sharing personal information with. 4. Limit access to your status updates and timeline: You may set your status to “off to Strand beach”, which may be useful information for sex offenders. 6. Be careful what you upload: If you are going to upload photographs, video or strong opinions, bear in mind that employers use search engines and social networking sites to check out potential and existing employees.

Angelo Elliot says social networks are addictive. “Limits on social networks must be set for children and teenagers.”

Ebon Botes sê dit is beter as ouers hul kinders se sosiale netwerke monitor.

Maureen Puma says she trusts that her children are using their own discretion when using social networks. “I haven’t encountered any problems yet.”

Lewer asseblief donasies van nuwe of tweedehandse vlootblou of grys truie by Boland Media by Mynhardtstraat 37, in die Gantssentrum, Strand af.

Keep our children safe

Child Protection Week is celebrated this week ( 27 May– 2 June) and our focus is once again turned towards our children. However, children – the most vulnerable members of our society – need to be loved and protected everyday of their young lives. The Helderberg has many welfare organisations for children that work continuously to help better the circumstances of children (the future adults of our society) and in this way uplifting our community. Many times the work of these organisations is hampered by a lack of funding, making it difficult to fulfil their role. Find out how you can help these organisations – perhaps volunteering your time, donating clothes or giving a monetary donation. It is also important to help protect children by reporting any form of child neglect or abuse – whether emotionally or physically. Let us join hands and love the children of the Helderberg by working together to keep them all safe.
