Many uses for bicarbonate of soda
Bicarbonate of soda – more commonly known as “bicarb” has more uses than you may know.
It is mainly used with baking powder and as a raising agent and is also commonly used to neutralise odours, as a cleaning agent and even as an effective and safe way to relieve indigestion and constipation. Here are some other uses for bicarbonate of soda that you may not know about: Fridge or freezer: To get rid of odours in your fridge, place an open container of bicarb into the fridge and it will absorb all bad smells. Stir the bicarb every two weeks and replace it every two months. Dustbins: To clean and neutralise dustbin odours, add one teaspoon of bicarb to the water
Plastic bottle rain gauge Making your own rain gauge makes keeping track of rainfall, or even a science project for your children, easy on the wallet. 1. Cut a clean and empty plastic cooldrink bottle in half. 2. Run a line of masking tape (or any other tape that you can write on) along the length of the base of the bottle. 3. Using a pen or marker, use a ruler to mark centimetres or even millimetres along the tape. 4. Turn the top part of the bottle upside down and place it into the soda bottle and attach it with tape or staples. 5. Place the rain gauge outside to catch the rain and then visit your gauge to see how much rain has fallen.

you use when cleaning your bin. Cat Litter: Bicarb is great for absorbing cat litter odours. Cover the bottom of the box with one part bicarbonate of soda and then add a layer of three parts cat litter. Drains: Unblock drains by adding four tablespoons of bicarb into them each week. Flush with hot water each time. Burnt pots and pans: To clean burnt pots and pans, soak them in three tablespoons of bicarb and hot water before washing. Brushes and combs: Clean brushes and combs by soaking them in a basin of water with one tablespoon of bicarb. A handy hint is to always use exactly the amount of bicarbonate of soda called for in a recipe and it is best not to substitute it with baking powder as the two react differently.
What you’ll need: • 1/2 cup baking soda • 1/2 cup cornstarch • Antibacterial essential oils such as teatree or lavender oil, cinnamon, rose, birch or as preferred. Method: Place the baking soda and cornstarch in a glass jar. Add the essential oil; stir and cover. Dampen a powder puff, cotton ball or sea sponge and dab into the mixture (or sprinkle the mixture on the sponge) and dab under your arms. – www.motherearthnews.com/naturalhealth/recipes-to-make-your-own-soap-lotion-and-more.aspx#axzz3EL6V2uPZ

Policing meeting identifies challenges This is according to a report presented by the Cluster Commander of the Khayelitsha Cluster, which includes Macassar, Lwandle, Somerset West, Strand and Gordon’s Bay police stations. The Cluster Commander Major General Johan Brand spoke at a meeting organised by the Western Cape Department of Community Safety, held in the New Macassar Hall on Saturday 20 September, to address the policing needs and priorities in the cluster. Brand also revealed that the top three causes for committing crime in the cluster are individual or public negligence, poor street lighting and unemployment. In a question-and-answer session with the Western Cape MEC for Community Safety Dan Plato and Brand at the meeting, members of community policing forums, security compa-

nies and the police had an opportunity to highlight what their needs and concerns were. Poor lighting in lower-income areas was raised by several people as something that actively allows criminal activity to take place but that it also puts police members and neighbourhood watches in danger when there is not sufficient lighting. Another issue that was raised at the meeting was the lack of resources that the cluster’s police stations struggle with. Several people mentioned that without computers, phones and vehicles, preventing crime is much harder. Cllr Benedicta van Minnen of ward 15, Subcouncil 22 and mayoral committee member for health, voiced her concerns about illegal shebeen activities and irresponsible drinking. Brand responded in saying that “we must publicly go and stop shebeens from operating”. Brand also said that concerns about poor lighting and lack of resources will be taken up with management.

Misdaadstatisieke Die SAPD leef permanent in ontkenning as hy dink hy gaan roof- en dwelmmisdade hokslaan in SA! Werkloosheid bly floreer, so verhoog misdaad verder! Die misdadigers raak al hoe meer mak en arrogant! Misdaad is buite beheer! F. De Jager, Strand Of what use are complaints toward the SAPS when they have evasive answers? It is not to their benefit to use common sense. Strandloper No transport at night for working overtime Referring to the letter, “Working conditions
questioned, Helderberg Gazette 23 September” it is alarming to see the IN2FOOD company’s response. They talk about how good they are towards their clients, but neglect to say that it is the employer’s responsibility to arrange transport for the employees, at the company’s expense, from 18:00. Companies think they are doing the employees a favour when in fact the employees are relieving the pressure due to the company’s bad planning. At this time of the year the clients’ demands are high, for which companies should plan ahead. Perhaps it is time for a management shift. Strandloper In2Foodsspokespersonresponsedoesnotanswer the simple grievances of affected employees. His management style is clearly not staff satisfaction orientated.

St Georges to play in Super League A in 2015 LYNDON JULIUS St Georges beat Kuils River 25-23 in the Super League A play-off match at City Park, Athlone on Wednesday 24 September to gain promotion to the Super League A next season.

This is the club’s highest accolade in the its rich 70year existence. The Lulu Boys went over the whitewash first through life-wire Western Province Disa scrumhalf, Harry Finger. The conversion by veteran flyhalf Morne Adams was unsuccessful, 5-0. A brilliant passage of play soon afterwards saw captain and veteran flank forward, Isadore Armien, go over for St. Georges’ second score. This time Adams succeeded with the conversion, 12-3. er, 22-6. Kuils River drew back a try through hooker, Ludwe Ntlokondola, but the conversion was wide, 2211. The momentum slowly shifted back in the favour of Kuils River in the last 15 minutes. Discipline, patience and numerous phases finally saw Kuils River’s
right wing Robin Goliath score, 2216. The conversion was wide. Adams then took the match away from Kuils River when he converted a penalty in the last minute, 25-16. Kuils River never gave up and managed one last score through Ashrill Consul. The conversion kick was over and the score changed to 25-23 just before the final whistle blew. “We have worked hard throughout the year, with very little comfort in comparison to our fellow counterparts in Super B. We stuck to our guns and stood by each other,” a battered, bruised but delighted Lulu captain, Isadore Armien, added. Armien has been playing for the club for 15 years, having played in all the leagues the club has competed in since unification in 1992. A remarkable feat for a player and leader of his calibre. He has also become the first captain in the club to achieve this.
