Waddle along for a penguin The fifth annual Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week will be taking place from 13 to 18 April, starting in Gansbaai. The waddlers will be setting off from Gansbaai towards Simon’s Town, while raising awareness about the plight of the endangered African penguin, which is only found along the Southern African coastline. These enigmatic birds face extinction in the wild as their numbers continue to decline dramatically.
Loss of food sources due to overfishing, climate change and habitat destruction are just some of the factors taking their toll. The 16 walkers, tackling the 120 km walk, will be walking from Bikini Beach in Strand on Friday 17 April. Their walk will start at 10:00 and anyone is welcome to join the walk. For further information about the Penguin Promises Waddle for a Week, visit www.penguinpromises.com or email Hayley McLellan on hayley.mclellan@aquarium.co.za.

Strand City Improvement District (CID) officers Rohann Nolte and Sonwabile Nobida show some of the dangerous weapons recently found hidden in storm water drains. The CID officers regularly inspect stormwater drains because criminals often use these places to hide stolen goods, dangerous weapons and drugs.
Dr Erika Viljoen

Ek en my broer gaan oor die naweek by ons ouma in Hanover Park kuier. FOTO’S: TAMSYN JANTJIES

Maak hindernisse waaroor of waaronder kinders moet klim.
Volgens sers.

Somerset West man to walk barefoot across Drakensberg Alfred Thorpe, a Somerset West resident, will be hiking the Drakensberg Grand Traverse X often described as the ‘mother of all berg hikes’ X from 25 April to 2 May.
Thorpe’s hike aims to raise awareness about breast cancer in women younger than 40 and to generate funds for the Helen Harder Cancer Foundation (HHF), of which he is the director. What makes Thorpe’s attempt so unique is that he will walk the entire 220 km of treacherous terrain completely barefoot. In 2014, running sensation Ryan Sandes partnered with fellow South African trail running giant and adventure racer, Ryno Griesel, to set a new running record for the challenging, unmarked route, achieving a finishing time of just under 43 hours – 17 hours less than the previous record. Last year Thorpe contacted Griesel, who provided him with their GPS coordinates. He and his team will not be running the track, but instead walking the DGT in a reverse from the traditional south to north route. They will commence from the southerly Bushman’s Neck border post, work north and finish at the Sentinel car park. While Thorpe and his co-hikers will not be driven by a time-keeping stopwatch, they will have to negotiate some very difficult terrain, including ascents and descents into rocky ravines, edging peaks and plenty of climbing. In fact, they will climb about the same height as Mount Everest over the course of their week on the trail. They will also cross alpine grasslands and wet marshlands along the way. Other hazards include negotiating potentially tricky weather conditions such as rain, heavy mists and a lack of oxygen at high altitudes (much of the hike is over 2 800 m above sea level). Only Thorpe will walk barefoot.

Alfred Thorpe will attempt to traverse the Drakensberg barefoot. Thorpe says part of his inspiration comes from the famously defiant words of Boer War icon, Susanna Smit, who famously spoke of crossing the Drakensberg barefoot rather than bowing to British rule. “Rest assured, it’s her strength of will and indomitable spirit that inspires me, rather than her anti-British sentiments,” Thorpe quips. “Her strong will and passion reminds me of the many young women our foundation supports.
Despite being diagnosed with potentially life threatening cancer, they soldier on and keep a positive attitude. Our foundation is named after a young woman just like that. Helen was a real fighter and a lover of life. She participated in the Cape Town Cycle Tour while undergoing a rigorous chemotherapy regime. She was full of laughter and joy. This is also why we link our awareness and fund-raising drive to sport related activities – it’s in Helen’s honour. She remains a true inspiration. “Few people realise that close to 10% of diagnosed breast cancer cases worldwide are in women under the age of 40. It is crucial that young women become more aware of these odds and do whatever they can to detect cancer early on, should they develop it. Monthly self-examinations are the starting point. Helen had no family history of breast cancer and lived a healthy lifestyle and yet she contracted the disease. Young women tend to feel it won’t happen to them, but it can. At the same time, we feel strongly that diagnosis is not a death sentence. Our message is one of hope and support.” Last year, Harder’s widower and HHF co-director, Alwyn Badenhorst, ran the Chicago Marathon and in 2013 he completed the Berlin Marathon as a means of raising awareness for the HHF. These two events form part of the so-called “Big Six” that also includes the London, Tokyo, Boston and New York Marathons. Funds generated by the Foundation are used to provide counselling, pamper-packages and specially made wigs to women undergoing chemotherapy. To assist Alfred in his epic barefoot attempt, visit www.helenharderfoundation.com/donate.html to donate online or contact Alfred at alfredthorpe@helenharderfoundation.co.za. Leopard killed on Clarence Drive, G’Bay DELIAH BRINKHUIS A two-year-old male leopard was found dead on Clarence Drive between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els on Saturday 14 March after allegedly being run over. Anita Meyer of the Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) says the leopard was not collared or directly monitored as part of the CLT’s programme, which was started in 2010 to establish how many leopards still roam the Boland mountains from the Groot Winterhoek Mountains near Porterville to the Overstrand coast in Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond. Women in action at the hood-camp.
Hood-camp a hit with the GB community Gordon’s Bay residents should be commended for their serious approach to becoming fit, and they have also proven that you don’t have to spend money to achieve your fitness goals. The City of Cape Town’s local hood-camp started with only 20 residents and has grown to over 80 participants in just six months. The City’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department has been hosting a weekly fitness boot camp, fondly known as the Gordon’s Bay hood-camp, at the local sports fields. “It is encouraging to note that this camp provides residents with an opportunity to get to know each other and interact through noncompetitive fun. This in turn helps to promote an active and healthy lifestyle and build unity in the community,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services

and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker. The programme includes various fitness activities such as a walking club, swimming, jogging, obstacle courses, beach walks, hiking and kayaking. The department strives to provide recreational spaces and programmes that uplift the community and provide a positive outlet for residents. Communities are encouraged to make maximum use of the recreational and fitness programmes available and to also encourage children to participate. This programme was first introduced in October last year and support has grown steadily over the past six months. The hood-camp takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Gordon’s Bay sports field from 18:30 until 19:30 and is free to participants of all ages.

FRESH Help fight gender violence against by wearing red lipstick or a red lips sticker in support of the Red My Lips campaign. Phone the Ukukhanya Centre on 021 850 0061 or visit the centre in the Michael’s Arcade, Somerset West from 08:00 – 16:00 from Monday to Thursday, and Fridays until 13:00 to buy stickers.
Easter fun at local libraries The City of Cape Town’s libraries will host a holiday programme for children from 1 to 10 April. The programme will focus on activities that children of all ages can participate in, including storytelling, arts and crafts, DVD shows, games and puzzles. “Libraries are places where children can explore, imagine and interact. For the next week they can look forward to a largely Easter-themed school holiday programme guaranteed to keep little hands busy and minds active,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Alderman Belinda Walker. The Easter-themed activities will include Easter egg hunts, card-making, and creating and decorating Easter bunny masks. “Although school is out for a few days, it doesn’t mean children have to stop learning. A visit to the library for some holiday entertainment gives them the opportunity to learn through play, participate in craft activities, and interact with their peers,” said Walker. The City’s Library and Information Services Department will be presenting some of these activities in partnership with the City’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to visit and take part in these activities as they are great fun and free of charge. For the complete programme and local library location details, residents can visit their libraries or the City’s library website www.capetown.gov.za/library.
Meeting moved The bipolar support group will meet on 9 April instead of the first Thursday of the month as usual. This is because of the upcoming Easter weekend. The meeting will be held at the Baptist Church on the corner of Hendriksz and Louw Street from 19:00 – 20:30. For more information phone Sue van der Spuy 082 333 8800.

Schools’ soccer a success Macassar Football Club’s first Primary Schools soccer tournament held at the Macassar sports grounds recently was a great success. Spokesperson for the club, Farrol Abrahams, said they were very pleased with the tournament. “It was a massive success for a first attempt and we got some really good and positive feedback. We are planning to include other schools in the Helderberg in the future. “Congratulations to all the winners, and hard luck to the runners-up. At the end of the day though, football was the winner. “A massive thank you to all the participating schools, players, parents and the teachers for all their hard work and sacrifice as well as to the neighbourhood watch that provided security, the club referees and all other club members who played their part in making the day a success.” Abrahams also gave a special word of thanks to Santos captain Tyren Arendse, who assisted at the presentation. Abrahams thanked sponsors Simsport International/Club 45 SA, the Friends of Macassar Football Club and those making regular donations to the junior division, which allowed the club to host this event. “This event will grow and grow and will be-
